In this sense, gender functions as a prism through which people see others and are in turn seen by them. These constructions have also been used to delineate accepted rules of responsibility for violence and abuse, and to support and justify claims to unequal power and privilege. Several gender-based assumptions have served to create gender dichotomies when it comes to such subjects as war and peace, heroism, patriotism, innocence and vulnerability.
