4 Overview of Modern Pentathlon The sport was invented as the ultimate physical and mental test of an Olympic athlete by the founder of the modern Olympic Games, Baron Pierre de Courbertin, in While the sports chosen 100 years ago remain, the rules have evolved to make Modern Pentathlon even more challenging for the athletes and even more exciting for spectators. All five events now take place over a single day, instead of five days, and the shooting and running elements have been combined to create a thrilling climax to the event. Points awarded to athletes in the first three events are converted into a time handicap for the final combined event, with every four points giving a one second advantage. So if you re new to the sport, just remember that the first athlete to cross the finish line in the final combined event wins the Gold medal. At London 2012, both the men s and women s events will feature 36 competitors. The men's Modern Pentathlon is on Saturday 11 August, with the women competing the following day for what will be the final Gold medal of the Olympic Games. The competition format is as follows: Fencing Swimming The athletes head to the Aquatics Centre for the second event - a 200m freestyle swim. The races are seeded, with the fastest swimmers competing in the final heat. A time of 2:30 is worth 1,000 pentathlon points; every third of a second faster or slower than this time will be worth a plus or minus score of four points. So a one-second advantage over a rival in the pool would give a competitor a three-second head start in the combined event. The day kicks off with fencing in the Copper Box venue. Each athlete fences against all his or her rivals with an electric épée in bouts that last up to a minute. Just one hit is needed to win each contest. If neither fencer has scored a hit after 60 seconds then both register a defeat so the action can get pretty frenetic in the final seconds. An athlete who wins 25 of their 35 bouts will get 1,000 pentathlon points, with each victory or defeat above or below this number worth a plus or minus score of 24 points. That makes every fencing victory worth a six-second head start in the final combined event. 6 7 Riding The final three disciplines of the London 2012 Modern Pentathlon are being staged in Greenwich Park. In the riding event, the athletes have to complete a show jumping course that includes 12 obstacles in a set time. To make things harder, the athletes ride unfamiliar horses that are assigned randomly. Each athlete gets just 20 minutes and five practice jumps to get to know the horse in the warm-up ring, before coming out to compete. A clear round within the time allowed is worth 1,200 pentathlon points. Competitors lose 20 points for each jump they knock down, 40 points for a refusal to jump and 60 points for a fall. They also lose four points for each second they are over the allotted time. That means knocking down a single bar will cost athletes a fivesecond handicap in the combined event, while a fall is equivalent to a 15-second handicap.

5 Combined event: running and shooting For the climax of the competition, athletes run a total distance of 3,000m, stopping to shoot at five targets before each 1,000m leg. Athletes can start running the next 1,000m leg once they ve hit all five targets. If they still haven t hit five targets after one minute 10 seconds they are allowed to continue, but any hopes of a medal will have gone. At London 2012, laser guns are being used instead of air pistols for the first time in an Olympics. The competitor who s amassed the most points in the first three events starts the combined event first, with the rest of the field facing a one second handicap for every four pentathlon points by which they trail the leader. This ensures that the first person to cross the finish wins the Gold medal. 8 Riding & Combined The riding and combined event will be held in Greenwich Park, part of the Maritime Greenwich World Heritage Site that also includes the Old Royal Naval College and the National Maritime Museum. A temporary 23,000 seater arena is being built in the park for the Modern Pentathlon and Equestrian events. It is London s oldest Royal Park, dating back to 1433, Greenwich Park contains the Royal Observatory, which is the home of Greenwich Mean Time. During the running element, the athletes will run alongside the meridian line. Greenwich Park Greenwich London, SE10 8QY United Kingdom 100 Years at the Olympic Games Included in the 1912 Olympic Games specifically at Baron Pierre de Coubertin s request, the Modern Pentathlon completes one hundred years of unbroken participation in the Olympic Games in London in As one of the core sports, it had the privilege of being the Games opening event from 1912 until Since 1996, when the sport became a one day event, it has become the closing competition of each Games. In its early history, Modern Pentathlon was dominated by Sweden who provided every individual gold medallist except one from 1912 until 1956 when Hungary and the Soviet Union then became the dominant countries. In the early years of the sport, the organising committee was made up of representatives of the five sports within the IOC but the special demands of Modern Pentathlon soon required an independent organising body. Thus the UIPM was formed in 1948 and annual World Championships began the following year. Until 1981 the World Pierre De Coubertin Championships were exclusively for men but women had their own competition from that date forward. Since 2000, both men and women pentathletes have participated in Olympic competitions. Modern Pentathlon has constantly evolved over the century of its Olympic participation. It began as a five day competition with one event held each day. In 1993 the first one day competition took place and further modernisation of the shooting event has seen a shift from 0.22 pistols through air pistols to the laser pistol that is used today. The combined event which now joins the shooting and running skills in a single concluding finale has made the Modern Pentathlon even more exciting. Even after one hundred years of Olympic competition, Modern Pentathlon s ability to move with the times has made it the true test of the all-round Olympic super athlete

35 Laser Shooting London 2012 will see laser shooting s Olympic debut. Laser shooting is in its second year, after the successful implementation in 2011, and at the 2010 Youth Olympic Games. The new laser shooting technology has been developed to perfectly replicate an athlete shooting with the traditional air pellet pistol, to stay coherent with the rules. Right down to the laser staying in the barrel for 10ms, as this is as long it takes for a pellet to leave the pistol. An athlete can change their air pellet pistol to a laser shooting pistol in a matter of seconds by simply changing their barrel to an environmentally friendly laser barrel. London 2012 will use Simpower Precision Laser Targets (PLT) which will give athletes real time feedback of where each shot has gone on a personal laptop next to them. Why the change to laser shooting? Increased safety makes the sport more accessible to the masses. Now literally everyone can practice the sport from toddlers up! Reduction of lead pellets which leads to tons of dangerous lead pollution, which is harmful to both athletes and the environment. Cheaper solutions to build shooting ranges, which can now be transparent to allow better viewing of the action. Media and spectators have the ability to get closer to the action as safety concerns are abolished. Ability to continually improve and develop the technology for more interaction for the spectators and media. Enhanced capabilities for television data displays. Increased level of shooting data can be produced. Head on pictures of athletes are now a possibility. Events can now be organised anywhere, even in a busy city centre as we saw at the 2011 Champion of Champions. Qualification Information How did the 72 Athletes Qualify? So, how did the 36 athletes of each gender who will compete at the 2012 London Olympic Games Modern Pentathlon event qualify? Here is the basic version: A maximum of two athletes of each gender from any one country can compete in the Olympic Games. If more than two athletes from a country qualify then the National Olympic Committee (NOC) from that country chose which 2 athletes will compete. The qualifying period lasted for about a year and ended on 31 May Athletes reached the qualifying standard by gaining one of the quota places available at one of the qualifying competitions. These were the 2011 World Cup Final, 2011 World Championships, 2011 Continental Championships and the 2012 World Championships. Different competitions attract different numbers of quota places. Once all the quota places have been allocated the remaining qualifying places are allocated from the World Ranking list as at 1st June Where a country has more than 2 athletes who qualify or when the same athlete has qualified several times, then the places are reallocated to the next placed athletes on the ranking list, unless the qualification standard was set at the continental championships and in that case the place goes to the next athlete/noc at the respective continental championship. The host nation has the right to qualify one place per gender if no-one qualifies through the other routes
