Mechatronic System Design (ENT473) Session 2012/2013 Semester 1 Experiment No. 3 Design an Electropneumatic and PLC system using Automation Studio software Name : Matric No. : Experiment Date : Report Submission Date : : Erdy Sulino Bin Mohd Muslim Tan School of Mechatronics Engineering Universiti Malaysia Perlis
Design an Electro-Pneumatic and PLC system using Automation Studio software. 1. Objective: 1.1 To design and simulate electro-pneumatic circuit, PLC system, Electro- Pneumatic circuit and electrical control s using Automation Studio software. 2. Part and Equipments: 2.1 Automation Studio software 3. Procedure: 3.1 Double click on the Automation studio software icon at PC desktop. 3.2 Click on [File] and select [New Project] for every new circuit design. 3.3 To build Electro-Pneumatic and PLC circuit, drag the component icons from the Part Library to workspace. Notes: You don t have to draw Electrical circuit. 3.4 Save the project and show the simulation of the circuit to the Lab s Instructor. 4. Experiment 1 : Basic Electrical Control 4.1 Using an Electrical Control Library (IEC Standard) in Automation Studio to design below circuit (Circuit 1). Circuit 1
4.2 Simulate above circuit and describe the differences between circuit portions (A), (B) and (C)? 5. Experiment 2 : Basic Electro-pneumatic 5.1 Using an Electrical Control Library (IEC Standard) and a Pneumatic Library in Automation Studio and design Circuit 2 as shown in below figure. Circuit Simulate above circuit and describe operation of the circuit.
6. Experiment 3 : Control the movement of double-acting cylinder using PLC. 6.1 Develop PLC circuit using Automation studio software based on below Pneumatic circuit (Fig 1) and Electrical circuit (Fig 2). 6.2 Simulate the system by clicking on the [RUN] toolbar. The cylinder will extend forward when START button is pressed and backward when it touches the limit switch 1S2. The process run continuously and only stops when the STOP button is pressed. 1S1 1S2 S1 S2 Fig 1: Hardware circuit for Circuit A
Fig 2: Electrical circuit for Circuit A 6.3 Complete below PLC circuit based on your design circuit in Automation studio. 6.4 Describe function and advantages of self-latching by having a START and a STOP button in an Electro-Pneumatic circuit.
7. Experiment 4 : Control the movement of Electro-Pneumatic system with 2 double- acting cylinders using PLC. 7.1 Draw an Electrical circuit in Lab Report and based on this circuit, build PLC circuit in Automation studio software according to the below Electro-Pneumatic system (Fig 3) Fig 3 : Electro-Pneumatic (Hardware) circuit for Circuit B 7.2 The system should be works as follow. Double acting cylinder A will extend forward when START button is pressed. Full extension of cylinder A will trigger the Cylinder B to extend forward. Both cylinder A and B will retract back after full extension of cylinder B. The process will operate continuously and can be stopped by pressing STOP button.
7.3 Draw the Electrical circuit for this system in below space. Use this electrical circuit as reference for you to design PLC circuit in Automation Studio. 7.4 Describe difference functionality of Limit Switch (A1, A2) and Proximity switch (B1, B2).
8. Describe differences between Electro-Pneumatic system with PLC and without PLC. What are the advantages of having PLC in an Electro-Pneumatic system? 9. Discussion 10. Conclusion
