1 Racers Requirements: Big Lake Aurora Lion s Club 2019 Race Season Rule Book (revised 11/8/2018) GENERAL AND SAFETY RULES FOR ALL CLASSES These rules may be modified at any time as needed 1. All racers are required to be a Lions International member. Membership forms will be made available during sign-up from the Big Lake Aurora Lions Club. You must have your Lions Club card with you when signing up to race. 2. No racer will use drugs or alcohol before or during a race. Racers will be disqualified if drug or alcohol use is suspected. No refund will be given. Drugs or alcohol are not allowed in the pits at any MSVSRC events. 3. Racers under the age of 18 must have proof of age and signed parental consent for each race. 4. Junior racers can be 7-15 years old. Juniors who turn 16 mid race season will be allowed to finish in the Junior class. They will also be allowed to move up to another class if they so choose. The Junior class will be split up between the ages of 7-11 & if there are 2 or more racers in each of those two classes. Junior racers snowmachine will be no greater than 440cc fan or free air. Junior racers will NOT practice with the adult classes. Juniors will be given track time to practice. 5. All racers helmets shall be Snell 2005 or DOT approved helmet to race. Safety first! Helmets must be a minimum of fifty percent (50%) international or blaze orange in color. Tape, paint or covers are ok. 6. Eye protection is mandatory (Goggles or Shield). Sunglasses, safety glasses or eyeglasses are not approved for eye protection, however, they may be worn with a shield or goggles. 7. Boots are mandatory. 8. Chest protection is mandatory. Safety jackets, EVS Protectors and Tek Vests are acceptable. At least one hundred & forty four (144) square inches of visible area on the drivers back will be international or blaze orange in color. 9. Shin guards are mandatory. 10. NO ROUGH RACING, No hitting, No T-Bones, No Rubbing, No intentional spinning out of another racer is allowed. The racer committing the infraction will be IMMEDIATELY Black Flagged and advised. The Race Marshall s decision is final. There is not an appeal process. 11. Reasonable speeds will be observed in the pit and paddock/staging area. All pit areas are caution zones where the utmost in driver awareness is required. 1

2 Snowmachine Requirements: ALL general rules apply to each division unless the division rules specifically allow a change or modification. If the division rules do not specifically allow a change or modification, then it must be assumed that the change is NOT allowed. Definitions: OEM = Original Equipment as Manufactured this means as it was manufactured for the model and year. OE = Original Equipment by a snowmobile manufacturer. 1. All aspects of modification are contingent on a safety inspection by the Technical Director. The Technical Director may remove any sled from competition that does not meet safety requirements. 2. Regardless of the required snowmachine equipment passing pre-race inspections, compliance with the rules must still be maintained in the event of a post-race inspection. 3. A minimum of 5 numbers will be used on both the left and right side of the snowmachine and forward of the driver. These numbers will be of a contrasting color from the cowling for maximum visibility. You will not be scored if your numbers are not legible or visible. Racers will be advised during their tech inspection if their numbers are acceptable. 4. A jack stand must be used at all times if the rear of your snowmachine is off the ground. The jack stand must be made of suitable material to support the snowmachine. It must also have shielding on both sides and the back. The shielding must be a minimum of 4 high to prevent traction components, snow, mud, rocks, and any other material being thrown from the track. YOU MAY NOT LIFT the rear of your machine and clean it out without an approved jack stand supporting the snowmachine. ABSOLUTELY NO EXCEPTIONS 5. All snowmachines must have a working tether switch at all times. The tether is to be attached to the racer and the snowmachine anytime the engine is running including both in the pit area and the track. The racer will be disqualified if the tether does not turn a machine off if the tether is pulled during the tech inspection, during practice rounds, while in a race or during a post-race Tech Inspection. 6. Any carburation is allowed, however, the throttle must be thumb operated and must be on the right side of the bar. Turbos, superchargers and nitrous are not allowed. 7. You must have a 1985 or older engine in your sled. Modifications are allowed. Carry over engines must have the approval of the MSVSRC Board of Directors. 8. Any primary or secondary clutches are allowed. The clutch cover must be separate from the cowling. The cover must be made of aluminum or steel material. Modifications are allowed. 9. Any type of brake components are allowed, however, the brake lever must be on the left side of the bar. Brakes must work at all times. Modifications are allowed. 10. The rear snow flap must be installed in a permanent manner and shall be held down (restrained from rearward movement) by a cable or wire (bungee s are not acceptable) preventing traction components, snow, mud, rocks and other material thrown from the track. The snow flap must be within approximately 1 off of the racing surface when the rider is on the sled. 11. The track can be any OE or equivalent track, one piece molded rubber or 3 piece cleated track. The maximum lug or cleat height will be 1. If the track is longer than the original a tunnel extension is required. Track modifications are not allowed. Tracks with broken cleats will not be allowed to race. 12. Any type of exhaust will be allowed. 13. All fuel tanks must be securely attached 14. The front suspension will be leaf spring compression. 15. There will be no more than a 40 width from center to center of the skis. Spreaders are allowed, maximum of 3 per side. 2

3 16. All metal ski loops shall be padded. Both loops will be at least 1 wide and 5/8 thick or 1 in diameter. Your ski loops must be securely fastened to be on the track. 17. You are required to have carbides on your skis. 18. The rear suspension must be any OE 1985 or older and modifications are allowed. 19. The chassis must be OE 1985 or older. Cowlings must be OE 1985 or older and modifications are allowed. The snowmachine cowling is required and must be secured at the start of any race. 20. If you have a windshield there must be protective edging around the windshield. You are allowed to race without a windshield. 21. Commercially available studs are required, however, you are limited to a maximum height requirement of 3/8 above the track lug. Traction screws, (Kold Kutter style) are not allowed. 22. Any gasoline fuel is allowed. Alcohol and nitrous are not allowed. 23. All slide lubricant used will be biodegradable. 24. All snowmachines must have a working tail light for all night races. Race Information: 1. Race registration is from 10:00am 11:30am. Entry forms and waivers are available online at or at the race venue sign-up table. No refunds will be given the after practice ends. The racer meeting is at 11:45am and races will start at Noon barring any unforeseen circumstances. 2. Heat races are 4 laps. Last Chance Qualifier (LCQ) is 4 laps. Finals are 10 laps. Changes may occur based on weather/track condition and will be announced at riders meeting. 3. Classes with 8 or less entries will have 1 heat race and a final. Up to 8 racers in final. 4. Classes with 9-16 entries will be split in half. Each half races 1 heat, top 3 in each heat advance to final. All nonqualifiers will race LCQ. Top 2 positions in LCQ advances to final. LCQ racers that advance will start in back row. 8 racers in the final. 5. With entries in a class, the class will be split in thirds. Each third, races 1 heat, top 2 in each heat advance to final. Finishing position 3, 4, 5 in each heat will race advance to LCQ. Top 2 positions in LCQ advances to final. LCQ racers that advance will start in back row. 8 racers in the final. 6. With 25 and more entries, the class will be split in fourths. Each fourth, races 1 heat, top finisher in each heat advance to final. Finishing position 2, 3, 4 in each heat will race advance to LCQ. Top 4 finishing positions in LCQ advances to final. LCQ racers that advance will start in back row. 8 racers in the final. 7. Race order is subject to change. It is the RACERS responsibility to watch the heat board for changes. 8. You must take a green flag in your heat race to qualify for an LCQ or final race. If you race in the wrong heat, you will not qualify for an LCQ or final race. Race director has final approval. 9. The snowmachine and racer that qualify in a heat race must be the same that is used in the LCQ and final races. 10. Racers will not enter the race track for a Heat race, LCQ, or Final race until directed by an official or the starter. 11. No spectators on the track or inside the track during races at any time. NO EXCEPTIONS. 12. Track closes at the Race Directors discretion. 3

4 Flag Rules: Green Flag Signifies the start of a race or that the course is clear and the race is in progress. In the event of a false start, the racer will be restarted. A 2 nd offense of false start will result in the offending racer(s) restarting in the back row. Yellow Flag Signifies there is a safety hazard on the track. Racers must slow down in a yellow flag area. Absolutely no passing is permitted in a yellow flag area. Once the racer is past the yellow flag area, racing can resume. Red Flag Signifies the race will stop immediately. The red flag will be used if the track is deemed unsafe to continue the race. To restart the race, racers will have a staggered start lining up in the order from the last completed lap. Racer(s) determined to have caused the red flag will restart in the back. Sleds cannot leave the track unless directed to do so by a race official. Black Flag Signifies to a particular racer that your snowmachine is unsafe to continue racing or that you have been cited for a rule infraction and may be penalized. Penalties will be determined at the discretion of MSVSRC and track officials based of the severity of the infraction and may include disqualification from the race. You must exit the track to the pit area immediately. White Flag Signifies racers have started their last lap of the race. Checkered Flag Signifies the race is complete. Tech Inspections: All snowmachines and racers entered must go through pre-race safety inspection to ensure safety rules are adhered to. Only snowmachines passing inspection will be allowed to race. Racers are subject to a post-race inspection also at the discretion of the Race Marshall. Protests: You can protest another racer if, you are entered in the same class that race. You will bring your snowmachine and the protested snowmachine to the Race Director. Both snowmachines will be inspected for protested rule at the same time. Then, both snowmachines will be fully Tech Inspected. Classes and Awards: Class 1 Class 2 Class 3 Class 4 Class 5 Class 6 Class 7 Class 8 Juniors (7-15 years old) 0-440cc Fan/FA Max Open Women 600cc Max 0-300cc Fan/Free-Air 0-400cc Fan/Free-Air 0-500cc Fan/Free-Air and 0-340cc Liquid Over 45 Years Old 600cc Max Over 55 Years Old 600cc Max Open Class 600cc Max Class cc Fan/FA Stock (See note 1) Class cc Fan/FA Stock (See note 1) Class cc Fan Stock IFS, 98 and older (See note 2) 4

5 Note 1: Classes 9,10 -- Snowmachine Requirements from page 2 apply with the following exceptions/restrictions: - Any OE style skis or equivalent (no Northstar/Derby skis) - OE style/size carburetor (no flat slides) - OEM exhaust - OEM engine, (no engine transplants) - OEM secondary clutch - OEM gas tank - OEM suspension (lowering allowed) - Spindles must remain in stock location - Seat must be OEM or equivalent to resemble stock height. - Replacement OE style handle bars are OK (no Oval Bars), may add hook. - Air Box not required - No removal of material from the bulkhead, tub, hood or tunnel or chassis in general; may install tunnel enclosure - Must have OE ignition components - OEM engine rubber engine mounts must remain; may add torque arm - OEM bumpers must remain - Headlight and tail light assemblies must remain for weight purposes but do not have to function except for tail light during night races; headlight lens must be taped for safety Note 2: Classes Snowmachine Requirements from page 2 apply with the following exceptions/restrictions: - Any OE style skis or equivalent (no Northstar/Derby skis) - OE style/size carburetor (no flat slides) - OEM exhaust - OEM Engine (engine transplants allowed, liquid to fan, as long as same body type was produced with fan. Must be brand specific. - OEM secondary clutch - OEM suspension (lowering, aftermarket shocks, limiting shocks, limiting suspension with straps allowed) - Spindles must remain in stock location - Seat must be OEM or equivalent to resemble stock height - Replacement OE style handle bars are OK, may add hook. (Oval bars OK as long as offset is 2 or less, no full loops on end) - Air Box not required - No removal of material from the bulkhead, tub, hood or tunnel or chassis in general; may install tunnel enclosure - Must have OE ignition components - OEM engine rubber engine mounts must remain; may add torque arm - OEM bumpers must remain - Headlight and tail light assemblies must remain for weight purposes but do not have to function except for tail light during night races; headlight lens must be taped for safety No Factory Race Machines at any event. The Race Marshall has the final approval. 5

6 Championship Racers Point System for MSVSRC Events: Position/Championship Points Earned 1 st / 30 6 th / 14 2 nd / 25 7 th / 12 3 rd / 20 8 th / 10 4 th / 18 Did Not Finish(DNF) / Will receive last place points 5 th / 16 To receive Points, the racer must take a green starting flag in Final All racers that qualify for year-end awards (participate in 5 of the 7 MSVRSC points series events) in each class, receive an award at the end of the race season. All racers will be able to throw out there worst race but you still must have at least 5. In the event of a points tie, best overall race placement will determine the position. If this does not break the tie, the racer with the best finish from the last race will receive the position. 6
