DOGS LOOK TO CHANGE ESPN2 TREND With an all-time record of 5-13 (.277) in games televised by ESPN2, Mississippi State will look for its first win on the national cable outlet since Sylvester Croom's first game at Mississippi State, a 28-7 victory over Tulane in TELEVISED GAMES BECOMING NORM FOR STATE Last season, eight Mississippi State games were televised by a national or regional outlet. This weekend's game will mark the second of the first three MSU contests to be carried live. MSU is (.416) all-time in televised games. STATE LOOKS TO CONTINUE AUBURN SERIES OF STREAKS The MSU-Auburn series has been one of streaks with neither team stopping at a single win since a stretch from Since that time, Auburn has had winning streaks of 11, 2, 9, 4 and 6, while State has put together three stretches of two and a four-game streak from MSU's victory last year stopped an Auburn six-game streak. STATE TRYING TO EXTEND HOME SUCCESS AGAINST SEC FOES Wins over Alabama and Ole Miss closed out the home portion of Mississippi State's SEC schedule last season, and the Bulldogs look to continue a home winning streak. Prior to the most recent stretch, MSU had a sixgame losing streak in home games against Southeastern Conference opposition. HARBISON, WASHINGTON HAVE WORKED WITH AUBURN STAFFERS Mississippi State defensive coordinator Charlie Harbison worked on Tommy West's staff in 1997 at Clemson with Auburn tight ends coach Steve Ensminger. Wide receivers coach Pat Washington worked on the offensive staff at Texas Christian in with Auburn offensive line coach Hugh Nall. DEFENSE IMPRESSES IN FIRST TWO GAMES OF HARBISON ERA In his first two career games as defensive coordinator, Charlie Harbison has guided his troops to a pair of solid outings. The Bulldog defense allowed just 269 yards and one touchdown to Louisiana Tech and smothered Southeastern Lousisiana, holding the Lions to 148 yards of total offense. DOG 'D' RANKS AMONG NATION'S BEST Through the first two weekends of the season, Mississippi State's defense ranks among the nation's leaders in several defensive categories. State is eighth nationally in pass efficiency defense (73.19), 15th in the country in rushing yards allowed (63.5) and 17th in total defense (208.5). BALL-HAWKING DEFENSE LOOKING FOR EVEN MORE TURNOVERS Mississippi State has forced five turnovers in the first two games of the season, but the Bulldog coaching staff is looking for more. State defenders have caused six fumbles but only recovered a pair of those loose balls. Mississippi State Bulldogs vs Auburn Tigers September 13, 2008 Football Game Notes

2 OFFENSE EXCEEDING 2007 AVERAGES Mississippi State's attack group put up 348 yards of total offense against Louisiana Tech and 401 against Southeastern Louisiana, bettering their 2007 average of State also exceeded its passing average, throwing for 442 yards in the first two games. 24 PLAYERS GET INITIAL GAME EXPERIENCE DURING FIRST TWO WEEKS Twenty-four players saw action for the first time in their career in the first two weeks of the season for Mississippi State. The Bulldogs have sent a total of 70 players into action, meaning nearly a third (32.9 percent) of them had not played a collegiate snap prior to this season. B-MAC ON TWO-GAME TEAR Junior wideout Brandon McRae has hauled in 12 catches for 132 yards in the Bulldogs' first two games. His 12 receptions are the most by a State receiver through the first two games of the season since Justin Jenkins had 15 in the first two contests of McRae's 6.0 catch-per-game average ranks atop the Southeastern Conference and 36th nationally. BELL HAS CAREER-BEST DAY Wide receiver Aubrey Bell posted career highs in both receptions (six) and yards (67) in Mississippi State's game against Louisiana Tech. Bell, who started eight times a year ago, caught 14 passes all of last season. His previous career highs were set on a three-catch, 62-yard day against Jacksonville State in Bell also had two receptions for 14 yards against Southeastern Louisiana. DIXON CONTINUES TO CLIMB UP MSU CAREER CHARTS With 171 yards on 36 carries in the first two games, Mississippi State junior tailback Anthony Dixon has now compiled 1,905 rushing yards on 492 attempts in 27 career games. The Terry, Miss., native stands fourth all time in attempts and entered the school's top 10 in rushing yardage last weekend. His 25 rushing touchdowns also ranks second on the schools charts (Michael Davis, 27, ). SOLID CARROLL LEADS WAY AGAINST SOUTHEASTERN Bouncing back from a season-opener in which he threw three interceptions, sophomore quarterback Wesley Carroll connected on 15-of-23 passes for 158 yards and a pair of touchdowns against Southeastern Louisiana. Carroll's 12 career touchdown tosses are only four away from entering the school's top 10 (Matt Wyatt, 16, ). The Natchez, Miss., native also posted a career-best 13 knockdown blocks against Tech and 10 against Southeastern. Strauder has now posted eight-consecutive games with a blocking grade of 80 percent or better. BULLDOGS WELCOME BACK SHERROD The Mississippi State offensive line gained the services of its preseason starting left tackle last weekend when Derek Sherrod played for the first time this season. Sidelined for the Louisiana Tech game after an infection, Sherrod played 18 snaps along the offensive front. PEGUES RETURNS TO LINEUP After serving a one-game suspension, senior free safety Derek Pegues was back on the field last weekend against Southeastern Louisiana. He was credited with a pair of tackles, returned four punts for 30 yards and two kickoffs for 45 yards. SENIOR CONTINUES ASSAULT ON MSU, SEC CAREER RECORD BOOKS Pegues has played in 37 games during his MSU career and he currently holds the Mississippi State record for kickoff returns in a career (83) and is 24 shy of setting the SEC career mark. His 1,835 career kickoff return yards is second in school history (Tony James, 1,862, ) and ranks seventh in the Southeastern Conference. Pegues also holds the MSU school record with three interception returns for touchdowns, which is tied for second in the SEC. Also, his 10 total interceptions tie him for fifth in school history in that category. PEGUES AGAIN NAMED TO THORPE AWARD LIST Derek Pegues was selected to the 2008 Jim Thorpe Award watch list, an honor given annually to the nation s best college defensive back. Pegues was one of just 40 defensive backs nationally to be included on the initial watch list, one of only eight named to the list for the second-consecutive season. He was also selected first-team pre-season all-southeastern Conference by both the league s coaches and the media. BUTKUS AWARD CANDIDATE CHANEY LOST FOR SEASON Senior Jamar Chaney led the Bulldogs with 89 tackles from his middle linebacker position a year ago, and was named to the Butkus Award Watch List over the summer. Chaney was a second-team all-southeastern Conference selection by both the league's coaches and media prior to this season. While leading State with 12 tackles against Louisiana Tech, Chaney suffered a broken ankle on the game's final play. He underwent surgery the following day, and will miss the rest of the 2008 campaign. McADAMS CONTINUES HUNT FOR SEC PUNTING RECORDS Senior punter Blake McAdams has started each game for the past three seasons for the Bulldogs, and his career numbers are approaching some of the all-time records set in the Southeastern Conference. McAdams set a new MSU school record for total punts with his 224 (previous: 217, Dana Moore, ). He is now only 53 shy of the SEC mark. His 8,865 total yards are a new school record and good for 17th in the history of the Southeastern Conference. FITZHUGH PULLS IN PAIR OF PICKS Senior safety Keith Fitzhugh put together an impressive opening night showing as he intercepted two Louisiana Tech passes. The fifth and sixth pass thefts of his career, it marked the first time a Bulldog pulled in more than one interception in a game since Pegues picked off a pair of Georgia attempts in WRIGHT IN RIGHT PLACE, MAKES MOST OF FIRST CAREER STARTS Sophomore linebacker K.J. Wright earned his first career start in the season opener and posted six total tackles and a team-best two tackles for loss. He followed that performance up against SLU with his first career sack. Wright also finished with one pass breakup and one quarterback hurry. LINEBACKER DOUGLAS AGAIN AMONG DEFENSIVE LEADERS Senior Dominic Douglas racked up the second most tackles among all Bulldog defenders a year ago, and lead the team in stops twice. Against Louisiana Tech, Douglas was second on the squad with nine tackles, one shy of his career high (10, UAB, 2007) and against SLU Douglas recorded four stops, one tackle for loss and a forced fumble. FERGUSON GETS RARE FRESHMAN START True freshman Sean Ferguson became just the second Mississippi State player in the past 22 years to start his first career game when he lined up at defensive end against Louisiana Tech. The Miami, Fla., youngster finished the game credited with just one tackle but was graded well on his 46 snaps played. He recorded three tackles against Southeastern Louisiana, playing 23 snaps. BAILEY BECOMING DEFENSIVE FORCE Senior Tim Bailey, in only his second collegiate start, played a line-most 57 snaps in the season-opener against Louisiana Tech and again led the line with 26 snaps against SLU. Bailey has been a constant in the backfield, and after he finished with two tackles, two pass deflections and a careerbest five quarterback hurries against Tech, recorded his first career sack against Southeastern Louisiana. He also was credited with a pair of tackles for loss and a pass breakup against the Lions. 5 THE LAST MEETING 2007 Mississippi State 19 Auburn 14 September 15, 2007 Jordan-Hare Stadium Auburn, Ala. AUBURN, Ala. - An interception that led to a mid-fourth-quarter drive by Mississippi State proved to be the difference in the Bulldogs' upset win at Auburn Saturday afternoon on the Plains. After Blake McAdams' 73-yard punt had pinned Auburn deep in its own territory, Demario Bobo's first career interception of a tipped Tiger pass at the AU 44-yard line would set up an MSU drive that was the only scoring play of the second half. State drove the 44 yards on 10 plays and finished it with a 5-yard Christian Ducre rush with 5:29 to go in regulation. The two-point conversion failed. Ducre had an 18-yard rush earlier on the drive on a third-and-12 draw play from the Auburn 25. Neither team had mounted much momentum in the second half of action before the MSU score, trading short drives back and forth throughout. The only other possessions of significance in the half were Auburn's first and last of the half. AU took the ball to open the third quarter and went 60 yards to the MSU 16 before fumbling the ball away. On its last attempt of the game, to try and GAME NOTES The Bulldogs have won their last three games in the State of Alabama (at both UAB and Alabama in 2006). State ended a six-game slide against Auburn with today s win. Derek Pegues INT return was his third career pick-six, setting a new school record. Blake McAdams boomed a 73-yard punt in the fourth quarter. It was the longest of his career, and the longest by a Bulldog punter since Jeff Walker hit a 79-yarder at Alabama in Anthony Dixon finished with 103 yards on a career-high 29 carries. Titus Brown moved into a tie for ninth place on the school s all-time sack list. Attendance: 82,129. answer MSU's score, Auburn starting quarterback Brandon Cox returned to the field after being benched early on in favor of backup Kodi Burns. Cox quickly moved Auburn down the field 67 yards on 12 plays - to the Bulldog 9 - before State's defense stood strong, finally watching a last-minute, fourth down attempt fall incomplete in the end zone. Highlighting the day statistically for MSU was running back Anthony Dixon, who posted his fourth career 100-yard game, rambling for 103 yards on 29 carries. Dominic Douglas led the MSU defensive effort with nine tackles. State opened the game strong, building a 13-0 lead, only to see Auburn score twice late in the first half to lead at the intermission. MSU took the opening drive and went 58 yards on 12 plays before being halted by the AU defense. Adam Carlson was then true on a 32-yard field goal. Bulldog starting quarterback Michael Henig suffered a broken bone in his throwing hand on the drive and never returned. Reserves Wesley Carroll and Josh Riddell would split time under center for State the remainder of the afternoon. On the second play of the ensuing Tiger possession, Bulldog Derek Pegues intercepted a tipped Cox pass and returned it 20 yards for a touchdown. Carlson's extra point made the State lead 10-0 just 6:24 into the contest. After the teams went scoreless the remainder of the first quarter, the Bulldogs added to their lead early in the second period with a Carlson 30-yarder, the result of an AU fumble forced by an 11-yard sack from State's De'Mon Glanton. But Auburn would get things cranked up late in the half under the direction of the option-style, signal-caller Burns, scoring twice in the final 4:18. He led the Tigers on a 5-play, 54-yard drive - capped by a 28-yard rumble by Ben Tate. State then handed AU a golden opportunity when Pegues fumbled the ensuing kickoff at the MSU 30. Seven plays later, Burns dove in from a yard out to give the Tigers their halftime lead. THE LAST MEETING

Five Mississippi State turnovers, coupled with a strong secondhalf defensive effort from Louisiana Tech, ultimately led to a victory for the homestanding Bulldogs over the visiting Bulldogs Saturday night at Joe Aillet Stadium in the 2008 season opener for both teams. It was Tech's second straight win over MSU, paired with a 1996 triumph in Starkville, and the first-ever meeting in Ruston. MSU still leads the series 7-3. Running back Anthony Dixon led State with 91 yards on 18 carries. Aubrey Bell hauled in six passes for 67 yards for the Bulldogs. Wesley Carroll and Tyson Lee platooned under center. Carroll was 12-of-25 for 172 yards and a touchdown, but was also picked off three times on the night. Lee was efficient in his backup role, completing 10-of-15 aerials for 85 yards. Jamar Chaney led MSU defensively with 12 tackles. Keith Fitzhugh picked off two passes for State as well. State led 14-9 at halftime, but LTU shut out MSU in the second half of play, aided by three third-quarter miscues. On returning the opening kickoff of the third period, State's Wade Bonner fumbled while trying to elude a tackler, giving LTU excellent field position at the MSU 30. But after the first two plays of the drive netted just one yard, Tech's Taylor Bennett was intercepted by Fitzhugh, the second pickoff of the evening for the Bulldog defensive back. After the teams traded stalled drives, another Mississippi State miscue would setup a go-ahead touchdown for the homestanding Bulldogs. LTU punter Chris Keagle's punt sailed over the shoulder of MSU's Jamayel Smith, who fumbled while trying to haul in the kick. The fumble was ultimately recovered by Tech at the State 9. Four plays later, Louisiana Tech was in the end zone. The short drive was capped by a six-yard run from Patrick Jackson and LTU led with 6:30 to go in the third quarter. Tech used yet another MSU turnover to add to its lead just before the end of the third. With State driving deep in Tech territory, Carroll was picked off for the third time on the night, as Deon Young returned the ball to the 50. A State personal foul added 15 more yards to the end of the runback, giving LTU another short field to work with. The home team was able to manufacture one first down and gain 24 yards to set up a Chad Oestriecher 28-yard field goal. In the fourth, Tech continued its strong defensive effort, holding MSU without a first down in the quarter. Midway through the period, Oestriecher connected on a 50- yard field goal to hand the homestanding Bulldogs a lead with 6:48 to go in the contest. After mustering just a yard on three downs on the ensuing drive, State caught a big break when the resulting punt careened off the back of Tech's unsuspecting Steven Howze. MSU recovered at the LTU 47-yard line, but could not capitalize. STARKVILLE, Miss. Behind a stout defensive effort and solid offensive performance, Mississippi State kicked off its 2008 home opener against Southeastern Louisiana in commanding fashion on Saturday night at Scott Field, The Bulldogs (1-1), who host Auburn next, totaled 401 yards and limited the Lions to just eight first downs and 148 yards of offense. SLU attacked first with a 46-yard field goal by Jeff Turner in the opening frame, but MSU answered quickly with a 50-yard reception by Marcus Green to set up Anthony Dixon s 14-yard touchdown, giving the Bulldogs a 7-3 advantage, one it never relinquished. The second quarter began with a drive by MSU, resulting in a 33-yard field goal by Adam Carlson. Two drives later, GAME NOTES Mississippi State s 34 points were the most since the 31 it put up last season at Arkansas. MSU s defense sacked Southeastern Lousisiana (SLU) quarterbacks five times, which is the highest since the Bulldog defense posted seven against Florida in Holding SLU to only 148 yards of total offense, the Mississippi State defense posted its best such mark since holding UCF to 219 of offense last season. SLU tried to fight back, coming up short with a fumble recovered by MSU s Cortez McCraney. The recovery put the Bulldogs at the SLU 27-yard line. Déjà vu occurred as Dixon rushed eight yards for yet another MSU touchdown, which placed him second on the school s all-time list behind Michael Davis with 25. The Lions (1-1) finally found the end zone at the 4:54 mark of the fourth quarter when Jay Lucas rushed for a 1-yard scoring plunge for the game s final points. SLU finished with just 33 yards on the ground, while MSU amassed 216. The junior Dixon led all rushers with 80 yards on 18 carries, while Christian Ducre totaled 67 yards on 10 carries. The Bulldogs, who bounced back nicely following their setback at Louisiana Tech last week, also threw for 185 yards, as three different quarterbacks saw action. Carroll, who started the game, was 15 of 23 for 158 yards and two touchdowns. Tyson Lee came off the bench and completed all three of his attempts for 27 yards.
