This one pertains specifically to teams that are returning to the SWEET 16 for the nd straight year. Do these experienced teams perform with aplomb and panache? Or do they simply bomb? Let s take a peek. ALL HANDS ON DECK No less than six teams return to the Round of this season. They include Arizona, Kentucky, Louisville, Michigan State, UCLA and Wisconsin. According to our database, since 199, teams making a right-back appearance in the SWEET 16 are 7-7 SU but only ATS in this round of the tourney. The cut-line, however, is often times the pointspread. That s confirmed by the fact that favorites of more than 6 points are 8- SU and -18 ATS in these games. Priced at anything less (dog or favorite of 6 or fewer points), they dip drastically to - SU and 8-7- ATS in competitive contests. Arizona and Kentucky find themselves making the cut (favored by 6 or more points) this year. NOT QUITE A '10' Looking at things from a varied perspective, SWEET 16 returnees seem to struggle when arriving off a win of less than 10 points, going just 9-5 SU and 19-- ATS. This year finds Michigan State and Wisconsin coming up short in the gene pool. SUB 7'S It s easy for teams to breathe a sigh of relief as they return to the for a nd straight season especially when they take on not-so-stellar opposition (read: less-than.700 foes). In playing down to the level of this type of competition, these returnees are a decent 1-6 SU but only -1-1 ATS. Don t be surprised to find Arizona and Louisville getting torpedoed against the spread this Thursday and Friday. SEEDY DEVELOPMENT As expected, #1 and # seeds fare the best in games as returnees, going 5-17 SU combined. To the spread, however, they are small money-burners, going -6-1 ATS. Meanwhile, # or lower seed returnees are just 1- SU and ATS not good news for Louisville, Michigan State or UCLA. Even worse news for the Bruins, though, is a -15 SU and 5- ATS mark in games when facing a foe off a double-digit win! Make no mistake, when it comes to handicapping teams in the SWEET 16, the winners will likely be the betterqualified teams that have been-there-and-done-that. Probably sweeter than Georgia Brown (though the Globetrotters might disagree) so the dilemma becomes when is it time to hedge and grab the juicy money-line? Not yet! That s because Calipari s Cats the best defensive team in the land (5.9 PPG/5.1 DFGP) draws the gang that couldn t shoot straight in this round as the Mountaineers arrive with a tourney-worst 1. Offensive Field Goal percentage. However, Huggy Bear s boys have been looting without guns all season long thanks to a nation s-best 10.8 steals per game more than thefts better than the second best team left in the tournament (Louisville). Yes, we realize that Kentucky is the tallest team in college basketball (would be the nd biggest in the NBA) and is riding a 5-0 ATS streak of late but bad karma could be waiting in Cleveland as Calipari is -8 SU versus Huggins in 10 career matchups. Our finely-tuned database also reminds us that teams in this round off back-to-back ATS losses are just 8-7 SU and -11 ATS when facing a No. 6 or higher seed. Meanwhile, No. 5 seeded dogs of more than 9 points are a near perfect ATS in play! And once we bring in the Hillbillies -1 ATS mark into the mix, you can see why we feel this will be closer than a Globetrotters/Generals contest. Come to think of it an ATS (and not money-line) hedge may be just what the doctor ordered as the Wildcats get the win but the Mounties get another Sweet cover. One last note to keep handy: should Kentucky hook Notre Dame in the, they would bring an 8-11 SU and -1-1 ATS mark in their last 19 games versus ACC opposition. () Notre Dame over (7) Wichita St by To steal a line from our favorite comedian, Rodney Dangerfield, it doesn t seem like No. seeds are getting much respect in this event. Iowa State and Baylor were bounced early and now Notre Dame and Oklahoma are taking points from No. 7 seeds. We re not surprised that the Sooners are on the right side of the column but we are mildly Shocked that the Irish are playing the role of pups. Sure, Mike Brey s boys are making their first appearance since 00 and are riding a nasty 7-game ATS tourney losing skid while Wichita State is just two years removed from a Final Four visit and enters this showdown higher than a Ben Franklin kite after defeating in-state rival Kansas. The committee finally gave the Shockers the matchup they wanted after trying valiantly to schedule a game with the vaunted Jayhawks for years, so that fragrance coming out of Cleveland at around 7:15 PM tonight is one of a MAJOR letdown. The same cannot be said for the Irish who will be trying to win one for the swimmer (Mike Brey s mom, who held the world record in the butterfly at one time, passed away on Saturday morning and he kept it quiet until after his squad defeated Butler later that night). So with Brey receiving a few Butterfly Kisses, look for the Shockers to fall to -7 SU in their last 10 against ACC opposition. One additional note for totals players: the clock should keep running as the Shockers and Irish rank third and fourth in the nation in fewest fouls allowed per game (9. and 9., respectively). However, we re not even sure his powers of telepathy can slow down an Arizona squad that has won 19 of 0 (+19.7 PPG differential) and owns the best rebounding margin (+9.) in the field. But then again, ATS wins are like a Magneto in this event to the bunch from Cincinnati as evidenced by a tourney-best spread record since 00, including 15- ATS versus foes off a win and a sparkling -0 ATS in contests. Whew! We re not about to fade that not with Zona just -9 ATS as chalk of 11 or more points in this round and the SMART BOX warning us that returnees while 1-6 SU own a lame -1-1 ATS mark when facing sub.700 opponents. In addition, don t forget that the Wildcats are fresh off a tourney win over Ohio State, a team that defeated them in the 01. So while we do feel that Indianapolis will be prowling with Wildcats (Kentucky and Arizona sorry, Villanova ) in early April, X marks the spot tonight in Los Angeles. Another must-take. (1) Wisconsin over () N Carolina by 1 The Road Well Traveled may be a biography about comedian Bob Hope but a chapter may have to be added in honor of Wisconsin should they defeat both North Carolina and Arizona the top two rebounding teams left in the tourney on their way to Indianapolis. And what about the Tar Heels? Should they get past No. 1 seed Wisconsin and No. seed Arizona, they ll draw the tournament s overall No. 1 seed in Kentucky! Still, it doesn t seem quite fair for a No. 1 seed like the Badgers to draw this much firepower before the Final Four, especially since Carolina shows up averaging 78 PPG and riding a 5-1 SU win streak. Even our Sagacious Square feels for Wisconsin as it reminds us that returnees are just 19-- ATS when arriving off a single-digit win. Couple that with the fact that No. seeded dogs of less than 8 points are 9-1 ATS in play and you can see why we re taking a shot at Wisky. However, Bo (Ryan) knows defense and discipline as his Badgers are allowing less than 57 PPG while committing the fewest turnovers (7.5) and personal fouls (1.0) per game in the nation. His Badgers are also shooting a clutch 76.1% from the charity stripe and that s why we can see them advancing by the skin of their teeth especially since the last time these two teams met was back in the in 005 when Roy Williams sent Bo packing in an 88-8 win as 9.5-point chalk. It was uttered by NC State point guard Cat Barber following the Wolfpack s shocking upset of No. 1 seed Villanova when he was informed that President Obama had the Wildcats moving on to the in his personal bracket. Instead, the ACC s 1 performance in this year s Big Dance will result in more than $8 million going back to the conference from the NCAA over the next six years and since both teams in tonight s matchup hail from the ACC, the conference will be guaranteed at least one representative in the. These two rivals squared off in Louisville earlier this season (the Cardinals first year in their new league) and the Wolfpack stunned Rick Pitino s redbirds, winning 7-65 as 10-points dogs. State, which outrebounded Louie 7-7 in that contest while nailing 5% of its shots from the floor, could have won bigger if they hadn t choked at the free throw line (57% compared to the Cards 75%). FYI: the all-knowing database notes that squads looking to avenge a same-season loss are just -1 SU in this round since 199. Still, it s hard not to lean towards Pitino here as he has proved to be the master of play, going 10-1 SU and 9- ATS in his career (only loss last year against Kentucky). However, our illustrious SMART BOX says you should look before you leap, noting that returnees tend to play down to the level of their opposition in this round, going just -1-1 ATS when facing sub.700 opponents. And our tireless database agrees, pointing out that teams like State who beat a No. 1 seed to advance to the are - SU and 6-1 ATS in this round since 000. Yes, it s a bit strange that both the No. 1 and seeds in this region have been sent packing the first time in 11 years a region in the has not claimed one but this looks like a dynamite matchup nonetheless. With No. 8 seed underdogs cashing in five straight appearances in this round, and NC State head coach Mark Gottfried pulling all the right strings, we ll back the Pack in this ACC rematch. UPSET SPECIAL () Oklahoma over (7) Michigan St by 6 Can it really be considered an upset if a No. seed wins over a No. 7 seed? You bet it can, especially when the lower-seeded Michigan State Spartans arrive on a 6-1 SU run, and all six of those wins came against NCAA tournament teams Purdue, Indiana, Ohio State, Maryland, Georgia and Virginia. And did we mention that lone loss came in overtime against Wisconsin in the Big 10 Tournament championship game? It s the same story every year: no matter how much adversity MSU is forced to face during the regular season, veteran head coach Tom Izzo always has his troops ready come tournament time. But as fabled as Izzo may be in the Big Dance, our SMART BOX warns us that returnees are just 19-- ATS when arriving off a singledigit win. A closer look also reveals that Izzo has taken the pointspread hat trick in his last three appearances, going 0- ATS. Across the court, OU head coach Lon Kruger shows up at the Carrier Dome as only the second coach in NCAA history to lead four different teams to the (joins Hall of Famer Eddie Sutton). Yes, we know the Sooners weathered a rough pointspread patch in their last nine games, covering only twice, but they did go 7- SU on the scoreboard. With Sparty a not-so-impressive -5 SU in the last seven meetings with Big 1 foes and Oklahoma fielding a Top 10 ranked unit in Defensive Field Goal percentage (8.5), we ll part with convention and take a ride on the Sooners schooner tonight. After all that high drama, the Bruins 9-75 pasting of UAB largely went unnoticed, but believe us when we tell you they ll need more than an air ball to win this matchup! Mark Few may have his best Gonzaga team yet, a statement we won t challenge after watching the Zags completely overwhelm Iowa, Leading by 17 points at the half, Gonzaga never let the Hawkeyes cut the margin to single digits for the remainder of the game. Not only is Few s crew the best shooting team in the land (5.%) and No. in scoring margin (18.0), they re also ATS versus.65 or greater Pac-1 foes, including 6-0 SU and - ATS as favorites of 7 or more points. But even though it s been a great season for The U and head coach Larry Krystkowiak, all good things eventually come to an end. Especially when Utah s opening wins in the NCAA Tournament were preceded by a - SU streak that included a loss to Washington as 1-point road chalk. Ouch! The Utes do bring the s nd best team in Defensive Field Goal percentage (8.) but they ll need all that and more to slow a Duke offense that ranks as rd best in the land in shooting percentage (50.6%). And let s be honest here the Blue Devils head to East Texas in the midst of an impressive 1-1 SU and 10-5 ATS run, with the majority of those games against tougher competition than what Utah faced in the same time span. Then there s Jahlil Okafor, whose 6 points and six boards against a rugged San Diego State defense showed how dominating the Duke freshman can be. Through two games, Okafor s field-goal percentage is a jaw-dropping 78% and he ll pose a unique threat to a Utah defense that hasn t seen many like him this year. As for head-tohead matchups between the Blue Devils and Pac-1 opponents, the last dozen meetings have been ruled by Coach K s minions: 10- SU and 8- ATS, including 7-0 SU and 6-1 ATS when off a win of 1 or more points. Hey, that looks better than Cara Delevingne locking lips with another supermodel! Toss in the facts that Utah is a dead-on-the-slab 0- SUATS in this tourney when playing off back-to-back wins and that No. 1 seeds off consecutive SUATS wins are 18-8 ATS in this round and we re forced to look only one way here today.
