Tip-off is slated for 7 p.m. (MT). The match-up between the fourth-place Aggies and tied for second-place Pioneers will be regionally televised by KMYU (Comcast Ch. 22, Dish Network Ch. 12, DirecTV Ch. 12, Over-the-Air 2.2), as well as aired on the radio and audio streamed online on the Aggie Sports Network, and also video streamed online through on USU s website, Now in its 108th season of basketball, Utah State has an overall record of 1,496-1,027 (.593) in its 2,523 games played. Utah State is now 7-2 on the road this season and has won 28 of its last 43 road games (.651) and is (.561) in road games under veteran head coach Stew Morrill, including (.615) record against conference opponents and a (.633) mark against WAC teams. USU has won 45 of its last 56 WAC games (.804) and is (.789) against teams from the WAC during the last six seasons. Overall, USU has a (.746) regular-season WAC record in its eight years in the league. Utah State is 10-3 at home this year and USU has won 59 of its last 67 games (.894) in the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum after having its 33-game win streak snapped last season on Nov. 30, 2011 with a loss to Denver. That 33-game win streak started after a 37-game win streak was halted by Saint Mary s on Dec. 5, Overall, USU has won 95 of its last 104 home games (.922). USU has won 91.7 percent of its home games (220-21) under head coach Stew Morrill, and the Aggies have won 248 of their last 271 games (.919) in the Spectrum, including 51 of its last 57 (.911) home games against league competition as part of 126 of their last 139 (.913). USU has registered a (.820) all-time record in its 43rd year in the facility. Utah State is 2-0 in the second month of the year and is (.718) during the month of February under Morrill, which includes a 46-6 (.885) home record. USU is 3-3 this season on Thursday s and (.804) in games play on Thursday under Morrill. The Aggies are playing on Valentine s Day for the second year in a row, beating Montana Tech, 70-58, last year and are 9-5 (.643) all-time in known games played on Feb. 14. Thursday s match-up between Utah State and Denver will be the 91st time in series history, which is the fourth-oldest rivalry in USU history, first meeting during the season. The Aggies hold a all-time series lead, but the Pioneers have won the last two meetings after USU had won the previous nine meetings.

THIS WEEK Utah State men s basketball hosts a pair of important Western Athletic Conference games this weekend, as the fourth-place Aggies host the two teams that are tied for second in the standings, hosting Denver on Thursday, Feb. 14 in a Valentine s Day night match-up at 7 p.m. (MT), regionally televised on KMYU. USU then hosts New Mexico State on Saturday, Feb. 16 in an all-aggie clash, nationally televised on ESPNU. Both games will be video streamed on the Internet, and the games will also be aired on the radio on the Aggie Sports Network, along with live audio streaming on USU s website, WHAT S UP NEXT? USU hosts New Mexico State on Saturday, Feb. 16 at 9 p.m. in a game that will be nationally televised on ESPNU. Following this weekend, the Aggies play at in-state foe BYU on Tuesday, Feb. 19 at 7 p.m., nationally televised on BYU-TV. BEING SOCIAL Utah State men s basketball news, game updates and information is available on UTAH STATE IN PURSUIT OF FIFTH WAC TITLE IN EIGHT YEARS Utah State is seeking its fifth Western Athletic Conference regular season championship in the last six years as part of USU s eight years in the league. The Aggies shared the 2008 title with Boise State, Nevada and New Mexico State as all four teams had 12-4 league records, before winning the 2009 and 2010 WAC titles with identical 14-2 conference records, and the 2011 WAC Championship after going Prior to USU s run, Nevada won five straight regular season WAC titles from EIGHTH AND FINAL YEAR IN WAC Utah State is playing in its eighth and final season in the Western Athletic Conference, before joining the Mountain West Conference in USU currently has a (.746) overall regular-season WAC record in its eight years in the league, including having won 45 of its last 56 WAC games (.804) and is (.789) against teams from the WAC during the last six seasons. LOOKING AT UTAH STATE The Aggies won three games on the road, improving to 17-5 overall and 8-4 in WAC play, with the most recent winning coming last Friday at San Jose State, as the Aggies speared the Spartans by a palindromic score. USU used a smothering defensive effort, a 16-0 run in the first half and junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield s fifth double-double in a row to propel them to the victory. Butterfield tallied game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, including posting 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half. The USU defense posted a season-low for points allowed for the second game in a row after allowing 46 points last Saturday at Seattle and then 36 points at San Jose State Friday night. The 36 points is a not just a season-low for the USU defense, but also the fewest points allowed since March 5, 2011, holding Louisiana Tech to 30 points in a win. The Aggies had a rebounding advantage, giving Utah State a double-digit rebounding advantage for the fourthstraight game and the 13th time this season. USU is now 14-4 this season when out-rebounding its opponent, having done so in each of the last six games (3-3). With its 51.9 percent (27-of-52) field goal shooting, Utah State has now shot better than 50 percent in two of its last three games and 10 times total this season. The Aggies 47.1 percent (8-of-17) behind the arc was its third game in a row with +40 percent as USU has now made six or more treys in its last three games, as well as six of its last seven. 2 USU MBB Notes - Game 23 - Denver

3 MEDLIN, REED SUFFER INJURIES Utah State men s basketball head coach Stew Morrill announced an update on a pair of players who suffered injuries in the Aggies game at New Mexico State on Thursday, Jan. 17. Junior guard Preston Medlin will be out 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist, while senior forward Kyisean Reed is out with a season-ending torn ACL in his knee. Medlin s injury happened in the first half, but he played the rest of the game, while Reed s injury happened late in the second half against NMSU and he did not return to action. Medlin was averaging 16.3 points, 3.5 rebounds, 3.2 assists and 1.0 steals per game. He was shooting 47.4 percent (82-of-173) from the field, including 39.3 percent (33-of-84) from three-point range and 81.8 percent (63-of-77) at the free throw line. Medlin was averaging 16.3 ppg, as well as shooting 47.4 percent (82-of-173) from the field, 39.3 percent (33-of-84) behind the arc and 81.8 percent (63-of-77) at the free throw line. He was averaging 2.06 made three-pointers per game. Medlin was also leading the conference in minutes played (36.06). Reed averaged 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.8 blocks and 1.6 steals per game, and still holds the team lead for both blocked shots (28 total) and steals (26 total). At the time of the injury, he was netting a team-high 58.2 percent (71-of-122) field goal shooting, as well as 66.2 percent (51-of-77) at the free throw line. Reed averaged 12.1 points, 6.5 rebounds, 1.75 blocked shots and 1.63 steals per game. Reed made 58.2 percent (71-of-122) of his field goals, netting 66.2 percent (51-of-77) at the free throw line. He averaged 30.4 minutes per game. THREE RETURNING STARTERS, OUT WITH THREE DIFFERENT MEDICAL SITUATIONS USU entered this season with three returning starters and all three are now not in action due to medical situations. Junior forward Danny Berger collapsed in practice on Dec. 4 from full cardiac arrest, but was released from Intermountain Medical Center in Murray on morning of Dec. 8 and was on the bench with his teammates that night. Berger will miss the remainder of the season. Junior guard Preston Medlin will be out 6-8 weeks with a fractured wrist sustained on Jan. 17, while senior forward Kyisean Reed is out with a season-ending torn ACL in his knee. UTAH STATE INDIVIDUALS Junior center Jarred Shaw is averaging nearly a double-double with 13.5 points and 8.2 rebounds per game, adding 1.2 blocks per game as well. Shaw has scored in double-figures in each of the last four games, netting 12 points at San Jose State, adding five rebounds and one assist. He has a team-leading seven double-doubles this season. Shaw topped his career-high in back-to-back games, posting 21 points to go with 14 rebounds in the loss to LA Tech and then netted a career-best 27 points at Idaho, adding nine rebounds. He has at least seven rebounds in 15 games this season, including seven double-digit rebounding outings, which have all led to his double-doubles. Shaw also is shooting 53.3 percent (122-of-229) from the field in addition to 72.9 percent (51-of-70) at the free throw line. After having at least one blocked shot in USU s first 14 games of the season, Shaw did not register a blocked shot in the next four games before bouncing back with a career-high four blocks against LA Tech and added one each at Idaho and Seattle, but did not have one at SJSU. Junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield has posted five-straight double-doubles, tallying game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, including posting 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half in Friday s win at SJSU. Butterfield averages 11.1 points, 6.0 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. He started his spurt of five double-doubles in a row with a career-high 23 points and added a thencareer-best 11 rebounds against UT Arlington, then posted 16 points and a new career-high with 15 rebounds in loss to LA Tech. Butterfield logged 11 points and 10 rebounds at Idaho, then posted 13 points and 11 boards at Seattle before his 22 points and 10 rebounds at SJSU. Butterfield now has 12 double-digit scoring outings in the last 16 games, and has also pulled down four or more rebounds in each of the last eight games. Butterfield has filled in splendidly at starter for forward Danny Berger, as Butterfield has scored 208 points in 16 games as a starter, averaging 13.0 ppg as a starter after averaging 5.0 ppg in the first five games of the season off the bench. Butterfield took over the team lead in three-pointers from Preston Medlin, as Butterfield now has 36 made three-pointers (36-of-80), and is also first on the team in three-point percentage, making 45.0 percent behind the arc. Freshman guard Marcel Davis averages 7.0 ppg on the season, and also leads the team with 3.1 assists per game. Davis has now tallied four helpers in nine of the last 14 games. He now has 58 assists in 16 games as a starter (3.6) after totaling 10 assists in the first five games of the season off the bench (2.0 apg). Junior guard/forward Marvin Jean has stepped up in place of Preston Medlin in the starting line-up, averaging 7.0 ppg on 42 points in the last six games as starter after averaging 3.5 ppg off the bench, tallying a season-high 14 at Denver and adding 11 vs. UTA. Jean is shooting 1.3 percent better behind the arc (43.6 percent) than his overall field goal percentage (42.3 percent), making 24-of-55 from distance and 33-of-78 in total field goals. Jean was a combined 7-of-13 (.538) in the Denver and UTA games. USU MEN S BASKETBALL RANKED AMONG NATIONAL LEADERS IN NCAA STATISTICS Utah State is ranked in the top 25 in three categories of the most recent NCAA Division I statistics, released Monday by the NCAA. USU is ranking eighth in the NCAA in rebounding margin (+9.1), and also is tops in the Western Athletic Conference. The Aggies also are 20th in field goal percentage (.477), along with 25th in three-point field goal percentage (.386). AGGIES IN WAC ONLY STATISTICAL LISTS In WAC only games, USU is first in rebounding margin (+7.2), while ranking second in threepoint field goal percentage (.387). The Aggies are third in scoring margin (+6.3), free throw percentage (.730) and assist-turnover ratio (1.03), while also ranking fourth in scoring (67.2), scoring defense (60.9), field goal percentage (.457) and assists (12.75). Additionally, USU is fifth in rebounds (36.2), along with ranking sixth in field goal percentage defense (.415), threepoint field goal percentage defense (.329) and blocks, while ranking ninth in steals (4.58). BUTTERFIELD LEADS WAC IN FT PERCENTAGE; UTAH STATE INDIVIDUALS IN WAC AND WAC ONLY STATS Junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield is first in the WAC for overall in free throw percentage (.830), while ranking third in WAC only games (.842). He also is second in the league for over three-point field goal percentage (.450) and fourth in conference only games (.431). Additionally, Butterfield is sixth in overall field goal percentage (.494) and 10th in WAC only games (.509), while ranking 13th in overall scoring (11.1) and eighth in league contests (13.5), as well as seventh in three-pointers made (1.71) and sixth in WAC only games (1.83). Butterfield also is 10th in rebounds overall (6.0) and eighth in league games (7.3), in addition to ranking 15th in WAC only assists (2.75). Junior center Jarred Shaw is fourth in overall field goal percentage (.533), while ranking ninth in conference only games (.511), as well as eighth in overall scoring (13.5) and seventh in league games (13.7). He also is fifth in the league in rebounding both overall (8.2) and conference games (8.0), in addition to ninth in overall blocks (1.14) and 10th in conference games (1.00), while ranking 13th in overall free throw percentage (.729). Freshman guard Marcel Davis is third in the WAC overall for assist-turnover ratio (1.70), while ranking seventh in league games (1.64). Davis also is ninth in overall assists (3.09) and fourth in league games (3.83). Junior guard/forward Marvin Jean is third in overall three-point field goal percentage (.436), while ranking eighth in WAC only games (.417). Sophomore forward Ben Clifford is 13th in WAC games for blocks (0.67). DOUBLE-BUTTER USU junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield s streak of five double-doubles is among the most in the NCAA among players with double-doubles this season. As of Monday, Butterfield is one of only two players in the country with active streaks of five or more, joined by Jarnell Stokes of Tennesse, and one of five active streaks of four or more: 7 O.D. 6 Utah State Basketball LAST MEETING AGAINST DENVER Utah State men s basketball was short-handed without two injured starters and came up on the short-end of a score at Denver on the afternoon of Saturday, Jan. 19 in Western Athletic Conference play at DU s Magness Arena. In a nationally televised game on ROOT Sports, USU played the game without starters senior forward Kyisean Reed and junior guard Preston Medlin due to injuries sustained in USU game at New Mexico State on Jan. 17. It was the Aggies second loss in a row after its 13-game win streak was snapped with the loss at NMSU two nights earlier. Utah State is now 14-3 overall and 5-2 in WAC play. With the loss, USU lost in backto-back games for just the 21st time in the past 13 years and the first time since at Nevada and Fresno State in the same weekend on Feb. 2 and 4, 2012, respectively. DU won its seventh game in a row to improve to 11-7 overall and 7-1 in conference action, remaining in second-place behind league-leader Louisiana Tech. It was also USU s second loss in a row to DU after a nine-game win streak in the series by the Aggies. Utah State now holds a all-time series lead, as the USU-DU series is the fourth-oldest in USU history. Utah State was led by junior guard Marvin Jean s career-high 14 points, hitting a career-high four three-pointers, topping his previous season-high scoring output of eight points which he had done four previous times. Junior center Jarred Shaw was one rebound shy of his seventh double-double of the season with 10 points and game-high nine rebounds, helping USU to a rebounding advantage, for USU s first double-digit rebounding margin since Jan. 5 against Idaho and was the Aggies ninth double-digit rebounding margin this season, including the first seven games of the year. Junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield and junior guard TeNale Roland netted nine points apiece for the Aggies while sophomore forward Ben Clifford added eight points. Freshman guard Marcel Davis dished out a game-high tying four assists, while Butterfield notched three helpers. Four Pioneer players netted double-digits, led by Brett Olson s 18 points while Chase Hallam added 14 points and Chris Udofia tallied 13 points and Jalen Love tossed in 10 points. Hallam also led DU with four rebounds. Denver darted out to an 11-3 lead at the 14:32 mark after a layup by Cam Griffin. USU pulled within five on two different occasions as both Butterfield and Roland were fouled on three-point attempts and both promptly drained all three free throw attempts, the last by Roland with 11:17 to go, pulling USU within That would be the closest the Aggies would get, as the Pioneers opened their largest first half lead at with 3:44 left on a Love trey, and DU took a lead into halftime. Love hit an old-fashioned three-point play with 12:07 on the clock to give the Pioneers their largest lead of the night at 53-31, and the 22-point deficit was USU s largest of the season. The Aggies whittled away at the gap and trimmed it down to 10 points three different times, the last with 2:18 remaining on a pair of Shaw free throws, but couldn t get any closer. LAST MEETING VERSUS THE PIONEERS AT LOGAN Utah State men s basketball s 33-game home winning streak came to a halt with a loss to Denver on Nov. 30, 2011 at the Dee Glen Smith Spectrum. The Pioneers shot a scorching 52.1 percent from the field for the game in dealing the Aggies their first home loss since Dec. 5, 2009, breaking USU s 33-game home win streak which was the third-longest in the country entering Wednesday. The 33-game win streak was the second-longest in school history behind the 37-straight victory streak that was snapped by St. Mary s in that Dec. 5, 2009 game. USU has won 85 of its last 88 home games and is now at home under head coach Stew Morrill. Utah State evened its record at 3-3 on the season while Denver, who will be joining the Western Athletic Conference next year, improved to 5-1 with the win. DU was 14-of-26 (53.8 percent) in the first half, hitting 5-of-11 three-pointers, in taking a lead. The Pioneers led by 17 at with 5:17 remaining until halftime, before the Aggies closed out the half on a 15-3 run, sparked by freshman center Jordan Stone and senior guard Brockeith Pane, to close to at the break. Denver opened the second stanza with a 12-2 run to open a lead with 15:33 to go on a three-pointer by Brett Olson from the left wing. USU got within with 9:24 left on a layup by sophomore guard Mitch Brunel, but the Aggies couldn t get any closer. The Pioneers took their biggest lead of the game at with 2:31 remaining on a dunk by Chris Udofia, for DU s first win over USU since 1974, snapping the Aggies nine game win streak in the series. Udofia and Rob Lewis led Denver and shared game-high honors with 15 points apiece while Brian Stafford added 12 points and Chase Hallam tossed in 11. Udofia snared a teamhigh six rebounds. Sophomore guard Preston Medlin led Utah State with 13 points, hitting the Aggies only two three-pointers of the night. Pane scored 12 points and senior forward Morgan Grim added 11 points to go with a game-high eight rebounds, helping USU to a rebounding edge. Pane has scored in double-digits in all six of the Aggies games this season and his last nine games played dating back to last season, while Grim has tallied double-figures the last three in a row and four of the last five. DU shot 52.1 percent (25-of-48) from the field, finishing with 8-of-20 (40.0 percent) from three-point range. The Pioneers hit 9-of-11 (81.8 percent) at the free throw line. USU made 19-of-41 (46.3 percent) of its field goal shots, making 2-of-4 (50.0 percent) behind the arc and the Aggies were 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) from the charity stripe. The Pioneers hit nine of their first 11 shots, in turning a 4-2 USU lead after a pair of Pane free pitch shots, into a lead, as Justin Coughlin hit a layup. DU stretched its advantage to on a layup by Blake Foeman, with 5:17 on the first half clock. Stone then scored four straight points and Medlin hit a three-pointer from the left wing with just under four minutes to go. After a three-pointer by Hallam from the left corner, junior forward Kyisean Reed hit a layup, then Pane netted a runner to cut the gap to single-digits at with 2:29 to play. Stone hit a pair of free throws with 1:53 and got the rebound on the defensive end and quickly dished to Pane, who drove the length of the court and hit a layup with 1:15 left to pull USU within 34-29, but the Aggies couldn t get any closer in the second half. It was USU s worst home loss since a home loss to Nevada on Feb. 25, The loss also snapped the Aggies 17-game home non-conference game win streak snapped. Davis is third in the WAC overall for assist-turnover ratio (1.70), while ranking seventh in league games (1.64). Davis also is ninth in overall assists (3.09) and fourth in league games (3.83). CHAIN-SHAW ATTACK Junior center Jarred Shaw posted double-figure scoring for the fourth-straight game and 17th of the season with 12 points at SJSU, adding five rebounds. He also tallied a game-high 16 points at Seattle to go with seven rebounds, and that game came on the heels of his career-high 27 points at Idaho, just missing his eighth double-double of the season with nine rebounds, but topping the 20-point mark for the second game in a row. Shaw has led USU in scoring in six games this season. He also had the Aggies lone blocked shot in both the Idaho and Seattle games and now has at least one rejection in 17 games this season. ROLAND ROLLING ON THE ROAD Junior guard TeNale Roland netted a career-high 12 points in last week s win at Seattle, netting 5-of-9 field goals, including 2-of-3 from three-point range, and added four assists. Roland most recently tallied seven points, four rebounds and two assists in the win at San Jose State, and also drained back-to-back crucial three-pointers at Idaho as part of his eight points. Roland is averaging 7.1 ppg on 64 points in nine road games, scoring eight or more points in four games, compared to averaging 3.0 ppg in 13 home games, netting eight or more points only twice, including his previous season high 11 vs. UC Davis. On the flip side, Roland is averaging 1.3 assists per game on the road, dishing out a road-season high four assists at Seattle, while posting 2.8 apg in home games, including his season-high seven vs. Texas A&M-Corpus Christi. JEAN MACHINE In starting for injured starting guard Preston Medlin, junior guard/forward Marvin Jean has stepped up in a major way, netting a USU career-high 14 points at Denver and then 11 points vs. UT Arlington. Jean had netted his previous high of eight points four different times. Jean also hit a season-high four three-pointers at Denver, adding three against UTA, topping his previous high of two also reached four times. Jean was held scoreless against LA Tech, but did snare four rebounds, marking the third-straight game with four boards. Against Idaho, Jean netted a pair of treys for six points, and added five points at Seattle on a three-pointer and a pair of free throws, then logged six points on a pair of three-pointers at SJSU, giving him 42 points in the last six games as a starter (7.0 ppg). Jean also swiped a career-high four steals at Seattle and tied a career-high with four assists. Jean is third in overall three-point field goal percentage (.436), while ranking eighth in WAC only games (.417), highlighted by netting a combined 7-of-13 (.538) in the Denver and UTA games. He also swatted a career-high three blocks in the UTA game after totalling just two in the previous 18 games. CLIFFORD THE BIG BLUE AGGIE With the recent injuries, sophomore forward Ben Clifford has the most playing time of any active player in an Aggie jersey, having now played in 58 games in his two-year career. Clifford had a career night against UT Arlington, tying a career-best in points (12), while snaring a then-career rebounds (9) and posting a new career-best in blocks (4). He then topped his career-high in rebounds with 10 at Seattle, playing a new career-high 35 minutes as well. Clifford has scored in double figures twice this season and five times in his career as an Aggie and has grabbed five or more rebounds six times this season and 19 times in his career. DOUBLE-THREAT SHAW Junior center Jarred Shaw logged his seventh double-double of the season with a career-high 21 points to go with 14 rebounds in the loss to LA Tech, adding a career-high four blocks as well. Shaw leads the team with seven double-doubles this season and all seven have come when he s posted double-digit rebounds. He just missed another double-double on the season with his career-high 27 points and nine rebounds at Idaho, marking the third time this season that he was one board shy of a double-double, with a 10-point, nine-rebound game at Denver, an 11-point, nine-rebound outing at UTSA and also had two 15-point, eight-rebound games in a row (at Santa Clara, vs. Western Oregon), as well as an eight-point, nine-rebound game in the season-opener vs. Idaho State. DOUBLING UP ON THE DOUBLE-DOUBLES Junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield and junior center Jarred Shaw both registered double-doubles against LA Tech, with Butterfield tallying 16 points and a career-high 15 rebounds while Shaw logged a career-high 21 points to go with 14 rebounds. It was the second time this season that the Aggies had two players log double-doubles in the same game as Shaw and senior forward Kyisean Reed posted double-doubles in the Nicholls State game on Dec. 20, with Reed tallying 20 points and 12 rebounds while Shaw recorded 19 points and 11 boards.

9 A LOOK BACK AT THE SAN JOSE STATE Behind a smothering defensive effort for the second-straight game, a 16-0 run in the first half and junior guard/forward Spencer Butterfield s fifth doubledouble in a row, Utah State s men s basketball speared the Spartans of San Jose State Friday night by a palindromic score at the Event Center at SJSU. The win was USU s third in a row, all on the road in improving to 17-5 overall and 8-4 in Western Athletic Conference action. SJSU dropped its eighth-straight in falling to 9-14 overall and 3-9 in WAC play. USU has won its last five at San Jose, winning the last 12 overall match-ups to improve to all-time against San Jose State in Utah State s sixth-oldest rivalry in school history. Butterfield tallied game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds, including posting 13 points and seven rebounds in the first half. The junior sharpshooter also hit three three-pointers Friday for the second-straight game and his 10th multi-three-pointer game. It was also his sixth game with three or more treys. Junior center Jarred Shaw and freshman guard Marcel Davis tallied 12 points apiece. Junior guard TeNale Roland added seven points off the bench, and junior guard/forward Marvin Jean drained a pair of three-pointers for six points on the night. Utah State made 51.9 percent (27-of-52) of its field goals, netting 8-of-17 (47.1 percent) behind the arc and were a season-low 1-of-3 (33.3 percent) at the free throw line. The USU defense posted a season-low for points allowed for the second game in a row after allowing 46 points last Saturday at Seattle and then 36 points at San Jose State Friday night. The 36 points is a not just a season-low for the USU defense, but also the fewest points allowed since March 5, 2011, holding Louisiana Tech to 30 points in a win. USU s defense also held the opposition to a season-low field goal percentage in as many games as well after holding Seattle to 31.0 percent last week and then 26.5 percent by SJSU Friday night, on 13-of-49 field goals. SJSU was also 4-of-20 (20.0 percent) behind the three-point line and were 6-of-9 at the free throw line. D.J. Brown led SJSU with 16 points, while Chris Cunningham added 10 points and nine rebounds. The Aggies had a rebounding advantage, giving Utah State a double-digit rebounding advantage for the fourth-straight game and the 13th time this season. USU is now 14-4 this season when out-rebounding its opponent, having done so in each of the last six games (3-3). The Spartans took a 9-6 lead on a three-pointer by Brown with 16:15 to play, and then USU scored the next nine points, sparked by a Butterfield trey and ended with a Roland layup for a 15-9 lead with 12:06 left. Xavier Jones hit a jumper for SJSU to close to 15-11, but then the Aggies went on a 16-0 run to open a lead with 2:57 on the clock after a Butterfield bucket and USU never looked back. Davis drained a trey at the one minute mark in the half to give USU a halftime lead. Utah State s 18-point lead Friday night was its highest in a WAC game and its second-largest of the year behind a 21-point lead vs. Nicholls State. Utah State is 14-0 this year and has won 80 of its last 82 games when leading at the half. Over the last 13 years, USU is when holding a lead at intermission. Butterfield netted another three-pointer at the 15:48 mark for a Aggie advantage. The Spartans sliced the gap to 17 at with 11:22 remaining after a putback dunk by Alex Brown, but that would be the closest the home team would get. A three-pointer from Jean gave USU its largest lead of the night of 29 points at 63-34, and the Aggies coasted to their seventh road win this season. D-SPEARING THE SPARTANS Utah State s defense posted a season-low for points allowed for the second game in a row after allowing 46 points last Saturday at Seattle and then 36 points at San Jose State Friday night. USU s 1-of-3 night at the free throw line ties a season-low for fewest free throws made and is a new season-low for fewest free throws attempted. With its 51.9 percent (27-of-52) field goal shooting, USU has now shot better than 50 percent in two of its last three games and 10 times total this season. The Aggies 47.1 percent (8-of-17) behind the arc was its third game in a row with +40 percent as USU has now made six or more treys in its last three games, as well as six of its last seven. It was his first made three-pointer of his college basketball career and second attempted trey, with one threepoint attempt during his freshman season at Oklahoma State. 350 USU WINS FOR COACH MORRILL Utah State s win over Western Oregon was USU head coach Stew Morrill s 350th victory at the helm of the Aggie program and Morrill is now (.744) at USU. UTAH STATE FROM THREE-POINT RANGE Utah State has made at least one three-point basket in 221 straight games and the last time USU did not make a three-pointer in a game was on Dec. 16, 2006 in Provo as BYU defeated the Aggies, USU entered that game having made at least one three-pointer in 127 games dating back to Dec. 14, 2002 when BYU held USU without a three-pointer in a win in Provo. BUTTERFIELD NAMED WAC PLAYER OF THE WEEK FEB. 11 Utah State s Spencer Butterfield has been named the Western Athletic Conference Men s Basketball Player of the Week for the week of Feb. 4-10, announced by the conference office. Butterfield, a junior forward from Loomis, Calif. (Del Oro HS/Yuba CC), posted his fifth-straight double-double with game highs of 22 points and 10 rebounds to lead USU to its palindromic road win at San Jose State on Friday. He also added one steal and one assist in the victory. Butterfield s 22 points were one shy of his seasonhigh 23 points, and came off a season-high nine made field goals on 9-of-11 shooting, including 3-of-3 from three-point range. Butterfield averaged 10.6 points and 5.8 rebounds per game heading into Friday s match-up with San Jose State. He topped that average and nearly had a double-double in the first half with 13 points and seven rebounds, almost single-handedly matching SJSU s 16 points and 11 rebounds in the first 20 minutes. During USU s 25-2 run that broke the game open in the first half, Butterfield started the spurt with a three-pointer and later netted six of the last nine points in the streak for USU s lead. Butterfield now has 12 double-figure scoring outings and five double-digit rebound games, posting double-doubles in all five. Butterfield netted three three-pointers for the second-straight game and it was his 10th multi-threepointer game. It was also his sixth game with three or more treys, including second game going 3-for-3 from distance. With five double-doubles in a row, Butterfield is now tied for 10th in the USU record books for consecutive double-doubles, becoming one of three different Aggie players who have accomplished the streak of five in a row, doing so four different times, joining Bob Lauriski ( ) and Eric Franson with five each. Franson had two separate five-game streaks, one in and one in Butterfield is the only guard on USU s top 10 consecutive double-doubles list. This is Butterfield s first career WAC Player of the Week accolade. It is USU s third WAC Player of the Week honor this season, joining senior forward Kyisean Reed on Dec. 23 and junior guard Preston Medlin on Jan. 7. MEDLIN SHINES IN BEARD OUT Junior guard Preston Medlin scored a season-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half, in the win over SJSU, which was declared a Beard Out by the USU students, with fans wearing beards to match Medlin s beard. Medlin s streak of 20-point games was halted at two in a row with only 14 at New Mexico State, but Medlin has hit for 20 or more points in five of the last eight games, and 19 times in his career. Against SJSU, he was 6-of-12 from the field, 2-of-6 from three-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line, tying the single-game school record for free throw percentage. After not scoring more than 18 points in USU s first eight games of the season, Medlin has now scored 20 or more points in five of the Aggies last eight games. Medlin tied a single-game school record in free throw-percentage as he went from the charity stripe. It is the 30th time that an Aggie player has been perfect at the line with 10 or more attempts, and the first since Tai Wesley vs. Hawai i on Dec. 29, Medlin s 11-of-11 effort is the ninth time that an Aggie player went 11-of-11, also first since Wesley. It was also a season-best in free throws made for Medlin and the third-most attempts and makes of his career, going 13-of-14 twice last season (vs. Hawai i and vs. Loyola Marymount). It was also the second time in the last three games and eight games this season that he made all of his free throws and 19th time in his career. Medlin also dished out five helpers to his teammates for the fourth time this season and it was the 12th time in his career that he has dished out five or more assists. MEDLIN LIVING UP TO PRESEASON WAC PLAYER OF YEAR BILLING Junior guard Preston Medlin was named the WAC s Preseason Player of the Year and has lived up to the billing so far in conference play, after posting 18 points, five assists and three steals in the win over Seattle, and adding a game-high 22 points to go with seven rebounds and two steals against Idaho. Medlin then scored a season-high 25 points, including 16 in the second half, in win over SJSU. For Medlin, it is the fifth time in his last seven games and 19th time in his career he has scored 20-plus points as he was 6-of-12 from the field, 2-of-6 from three-point range and a perfect 11-for-11 at the free throw line, tying the single-game school record for free throw percentage. Medlin also added five assists in the game. MEDLIN EARNS TRIO OF PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS Utah State men s basketball player Preston Medlin was named the Western Athletic Conference Player of the Week, College Sports Madness WAC Player of the Week and America First Credit Union USU Student-Athlete Of The Week for his performance during the period of Dec. 30-Jan. 6 in leading USU to three wins. Medlin, a junior guard from Carrollton, Texas (Hebron HS), helped Utah State post a 3-0 WAC record last week with a road win at Texas State (81-57), and home wins against Seattle (75-66) and Idaho (82-75 OT). Against the Bobcats, Medlin scored 21 points to go along with six rebounds and one assist. Against the Redhawks, he had 18 points to go along with five assists and a season-high tying three steals. And against the Vandals, he scored 22 points and hit the tying three-pointer with 0.4 seconds left in regulation to send the game into overtime, where he scored nine of USU s 13 points. Medlin, who scored all but three of his points following intermission, added seven rebounds, two steals and one assist against Idaho. For the week, Medlin averaged 20.3 points, 4.3 rebounds, 2.3 assists and 1.7 steals per game, while shooting 41.5 percent from the field (17-of-41), 41.7 percent from three-point range (10-of-24) and 73.9 percent at the free throw line (17-of- 23). Medlin s three-pointer against Idaho marked the second time this year he has sent a contest into overtime as he hit the game-tying three-pointer at Santa Clara with 0:2.4. USU went on to win that game, This is Medlin s first WAC Player of the Week honor this season and second of his career, also collecting the accolade on Jan. 30, Medlin has earned the USU Student-Athlete of the Week honor for the third time this season, also earning the honor on Nov. 12 and Dec. 3. It is Medlin s seventh career USU honor, earning the award four times last season. MVP, THREE PLAYER OF THE WEEK AWARDS FOR REED Senior forward Kyisean Reed scored a season-high for the second time in three games with 21 points to earn Most Valuable Player honors of the 2012 Utah State hosted World Vision Challenge, sponsored by Gossner Foods. For the tournament, Reed averaged 16.7 points, 7.7 rebounds, 2.0 assists, 2.0 blocks and 1.3 steals in 31.3 minutes per outing, while shooting 57.1 percent from the field (16-28) and 78.3 percent at the free throw line (18-23). He topped his season-high twice, posting 20 points to go with a career-high 12 rebounds in the Nicholls State game only to net 21 points in the Southern Illinois contest. This is the fourth year in a row that Utah State has been picked first by at least one of the voting groups, being tabbed first by the media last year, along with being selected first by both groups in and The Aggies were selected as the preseason favorites by the media, receiving 232 points and 15 first-place votes. New Mexico State was picked second with 223 points and eight first-place votes. In the coaches poll, NMSU edged USU by one point, with New Mexico State collecting five first-place votes and 77 points while Utah State also garnered five firstplace votes and 76 points. In the media poll, Denver earned 181 points and one first place vote for third place followed by Louisiana Tech with 162 points.
