21 POSTGAME QUOTES Ole Miss 29, Texas A&M 28 November 12, 2016 Avery Gennesy, Texas A&M Senior Offensive Tackle On the change in the offense in the second half... First I want to credit Ole Miss, they played very good in the second half. I think it s just consistency. I think Ole Miss did a great job on defense as well. We have to get better extending drives and doing the little things. On Ole Miss defense... They were throwing different things at us, blitzing off the edge, corner blitzing, just different little things that helped them out and led them to victory. You re always going to make mistakes, that s why I said we have to go in, look at film, fix them and move on. On the late touchdown by Ole Miss... It probably changed the game for them. We had to stay focused and then come back on the field to extend the drive to get some points on the board. Film is the key. If we fix the little problems we ll be fine. Jake Hubenak, Texas A&M Junior Quarterback On emotions of the loss... It stings a lot. Not just for me in general but for this entire team. We had a great week of practice and we worked hard. Obviously not the result we wanted so that stings the most. The second half difference... I ll put it on me. I didn t do a good enough job in the second half. I missed a couple of throws here and there that I should have made. We just didn t stay on the field long enough and I put that on me. How this team will rebound... This is the strongest team I ve been around and I think we ll be fine as far as it goes mentally. Last week was about as tough as it gets, losing a top-four spot and we handled this week of practice great. I think we will do the same this coming week. It just comes down to executing on Saturday. Myles Garrett, Texas A&M Junior Defensive End On what changed when Ole Miss scored at beginning of fourth quarter... Nothing changed. The tempo didn t change. The mentality didn t change. They made some great plays at crucial times and they got one over on us. On how defense played tonight specifically in the fourth quarter... Everybody played their heart out. I mean we had some guys banged up but they decided to stay in and keep on working. Next man up, Larry [Pryor] came in for Armani [Watts] and he filled the role better than anybody else could. He made some big plays for us and everybody did their jobs. They [Ole Miss] just made some good plays. On explaining losses the past few weeks... I mean everybody s tough in the SEC and nothing s given, you have to take everything from whoever

22 you play. Nobody s going to lay down and just give it to you. You have to play hard and you have to play smart and we had some lapses today and they got one, stole one from us. On the team putting last week behind them... I think we did. We played hard in practice. We practiced like any other week, whether a win or a loss. We put it behind us and we kept our heads up. We weren t thinking about this last game, we just came in with fresh minds and fresh legs, ready to take on a new challenge. On his health and percentage he s at personally... Slightly better than down. Not 100, probably not 90, but I got to give it my all. If I can go out there, if I can get a hit, if I can keep my gap, I ll be out there as long as I can. Kevin Sumlin, Texas A&M Head Coach On giving up the lead... Those two fourth down opportunities ended up costing us. The ability to get either three points on either one of those, or a touchdown, in a game like that is a big deal. It s a combination of two things: the ability to extend the lead when we had the opportunity, which gave them the opportunity to stay in the game, and not being able to get off the field when we needed to. That s the story of the game. We didn t make enough plays to win the game. On Justin Evans penalties... He had two of them. The one that extended the drive and the offside in the red zone that brought them a little bit closer. We were able to hold Ole Miss to three on that drive but that three ended up being the difference in the game That s just a lesson for everyone about how important those penalties can be in the game. On the Ole Miss quarterback Shea Patterson... I think we got to see how fast he really is. He is extremely quick. He extended plays and kept his eyes down the field. Instead of just running out of bounds, he was able to get outside the pocket and keep plays alive. He has a lot of talent and you saw that displayed tonight. On end of game strategy... I don t know, I think that we were pretty aggressive. I thought we were more aggressive in the fourth quarter. We came out, we got the onside kick, went with a reverse pass and that s not unaggressive. We threw some balls that just bounced off Josh s [Reynolds] hands on the sideline and we had some deep balls. The clock was our friend. As soon as you say that, you come back in the fourth quarter and get the ball with 12 minutes to go in the game and you run about six minutes off the clock, running and passing and extend the lead again so in a game like this, there s plenty of things to go around. We didn t convert when we had the opportunity to really extend a little in third quarter. We ve been a really good team in the third quarter with adjustments, been probably one of our best quarters all year. It wasn t for us tonight and that s where we had a chance to really [extend the lead.] We secured the onside kick, got good field position, went for the jugular, then came up short which gives them the ball right there and basically to take six minutes off the clock, drive the ball onto the field, extend the lead and then I mean get off the field with defense, that s the story of the fourth quarter. Hugh Freeze, Ole Miss Head Coach Opening statement Obviously, it s an exited locker room. A lot of teams go through adversity in given years, and we ve certainly had our share. Whether it be difficult losses, turnovers, or the many injuries that we ve been

23 through, we ve just had a lot of things that have put a cloud around us. It s been tough to break through it. But, the thing that is so rewarding is the training ground for young men and for coaches. There s more you can learn from that than the great times. Being a person of faith, there s a lot of times that that s what you hold on to. I ve never seen our kids waver. It s been the next man up mentality. Our coaches have never wavered. We always have belief in the next opportunity. Tonight, we get to see the fruits of it. Our kids haven t grown weary in doing good or working. They certainly believe in themselves enough tonight in a difficult atmosphere to play for 60 minutes. Our theme this week was time, and what we do with it. Time matters. It matters for a lot of different people, for a lot of different reasons. It s nice to see them get rewarded for the way they ve worked. On Shea Patterson s poise I ve recruited this kid since he was a 9th grader. I ve known all along that he has that it quality about him. I leave very few high school games feeling like the kid is just a no-brainer. I got one opportunity to go watch him play, and I left that game with a man crush on him. I saw a kid that has such poise. The mechanics are great. He can run; he can throw. You wish he was a little taller and all of that, but at the end of the day the guy just makes plays. He had to learn on the run tonight. He s been running scout team the last five weeks, and they threw a lot of stuff at him tonight. He made a few bad reads here and there, and then would make up for it with his athletics ability. On talking to kicker Gary Wunderlich before the final kick I didn t speak to him. Me and kickers don t talk a whole lot in the course of the game. I can t remember if he s had one like that, so I was going to treat it as normal as possible. I was glad they had used all of their timeouts, and I didn t have to manage that extra seconds with him. Shea Patterson, Ole Miss Freshman Quarterback On the game First of all, I want to thank God. Without him, none of this is possible. This one was for the seniors. It wasn t about the redshirt, me pulling it off. It was about the team. This game was for the seniors, and I m happy I did it for them. On the fourth quarter Our defense played a heck of a second half. That s what really got us the momentum. Coach told me after the half, Just stay calm and play your game. I came out in the first half kind of shaky. Kyle Field is pretty awesome. Once I got settled in, we played awesome as a collective group. On the biggest challenge of the week It wasn t about the redshirt. Chad (Kelly) was the man. I wasn t expecting to play until next year. It was never about the redshirt. It was about the seniors, for John Youngblood and Chad Kelly and all those guys. I m just happy to have done it for them. On the emotions after the game It s a dream come true. It s crazy, my first start. Johnny Manziel was my favorite player growing up. It s ironic that I get my first start at Kyle Field. It s awesome.
