The Golden Bears went from a dismal 1-10 in 2001 to 7-5 last year, Cal s first winning season since Tedford earned a well-deserved Pac-10 Coach of the Year award from his peers. And while year one looked daunting going in, year two may be even more so, as the Bears return just nine starters, fewest by far in the Pac-10. Included among the departed starters is quarterback Kyle Boller and his school-record 64 career touchdown passes. Plus the schedule does Cal no favors, as nine of 13 opponents played in bowl games last year. Offense: Last year, coach Jeff Tedford came in with a reputation as an offensive specialist. He enhanced that reputation immediately as California put up 35.6 points per game to rank second in the the Pac-10 in scoring offense. It almost doubled the Golden Bears total of the previous year. Cal returns six starters to the offensive unit, but such big-time contributors as quarterback Kyle Boller and 1,000-yard rusher Joe Igber are among the missing. Replacing Boller will be a major chore. Junior Reggie Robertson came out of spring practice ahead of Richard Schwartz, but he could face a challenge from incoming JC hotshot Aaron Rodgers. Robertson threw just two passes last year, but did get two starts in A number of experienced hands are available to pick up Igber s carries. Achimchinobe Echemandu (formerly Joe Echema) and Terrell Williams have both shown productivity in the past, although both are returning from knee surgery. Redshirt freshman Marcus O Keith also may play his way into the mix. Solid blocking fullback Chris Manderino returns. Jonathan Makonnen was Cal s leading receiver last season with 54 catches and had at least three receptions in 11 of 12 games. Geoff McArthur has seen some starting duty as well. Some speedy freshmen arrive in the fall and the likes of Devin Stearns or others might make immediate contributions. Brandon Hall is the leading candidate to replace Tom Swoboda at tight end. The offensive line should be a strength for the Bears as three starters return led by tackle Mark Wilson, back for his fourth year as a front-liner after starting 34 games the last three years. He is joined by fellow starters Chris Murphy and Jonathan Giesel. Marvin Philip, who has some starting time at center, is back after a two-year Mormon mission and will try to claim that spot. Sophomores Ryan O Callaghan and Andrew Cameron appear ready and will push for playing time. Defense: Questions abound on a defensive unit that forced three turnovers per game last year. Just two starters return leading to open competition throughout the unit. The headliner is tackle Lorenzo Alexander, who came into his own last year and is expected to become a dominant player this season. Combined with fellow tackles Josh Beckham and Tom Svercheck, the Bears find themselves with experience and strength in the interior line. The same cannot be said at end, where All-Pac-10 pick Tully Banta-Cain, who led the Bears in sacks the last two years, is among the missing. Incoming JC transfers Ryan Riddle and Ray Tago may be counted on to shore up the ends. Three new starters must be found at linebacker, but early indications are that there will be a significant increase in speed at the position. Hard-hitting junior Wendell Hunter is the only returnee with any starting experience, with Ryan Estes and Joe Maningo possibilities to join him in the starting lineup. Rover Donnie McCleskey is the only returning starter in a secondary that must replace the likes of Nnamdi Asomugha and Jemeel Powell, although corner James Bethea also boasts some starting time. 2 Honor Candidates Lorenzo Alexander, DT, 6-3, 295, JR Has blossomed into one of the conference s better defensive interior lineman, earning All- Pac-10 honorable mention notice as a sophomore last season. Posted 25 tackles (19 solo), five tackles for losses, one sack and one fumble recovery in Also blocked two kicks for the Bears on special teams. Played in all 12 games, drawing six starts. Jonathan Makonnen, WR, 6-0, 175, SR Immediately seized a starting spot upon his arrival from nearby City College of San Francisco last year. Hauled in a team-high 54 passes for 682 yards (12.6 yards per grab) and seven touchdowns to finish ninth in catches in the Pac-10. Figures to be a candidate for All-Conference honors this fall. 4 Head Coach Jeff Tedford Jeff Tedford, the man who directed California to its first winning football season (7-5) in nine years and the nation s biggest one-year turnaround of 2002, enters his second year as Cal s head coach. Inheriting a team that went 1-10 in 2001, Tedford guided the Golden Bears to victories over the likes of Michigan State, Washington and Arizona State in his first season at the helm. It marked the first time Cal beat three nationally-ranked teams in the same season in 52 years. His Golden Bears tied for fourth place in the Pac-10 with a 4-4 league mark and he was named 2002 Pac-10 Coach of the Year. Under Tedford s direction, California enjoyed a 5.5 game improvement and six-win increase from the previous season. Only Pappy Waldorf s 1947 squad produced a larger one-year turnaround in school history, posting a 9-1 mark after the team finished 2-7 the previous season. Tedford led Cal to numerous other milestone accomplishments, including ending a 19-game, 26-year losing streak to Washington, halting a 12-year victory drought in ASU s Sun Devil Stadium and posting the first Big Game win over Stanford in eight seasons. Prior to his arrival in Berkeley last year, Tedford was a highly-regarded offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at the University of Oregon, where the Ducks finished ranked No. 2 nationally in During his 14-year coaching career with Oregon ( ), Fresno State ( ) and the Canadian Football League s Calgary Stampeders ( ), he devised record-setting offenses at every stop. Under his tutelage, such quarterbacks as Akili Smith, Trent Dilfer and Joey Harrington blossomed into high first-round draft picks. In his first season at Cal, he transformed Kyle Boller into perhaps the most improved quarterback in college football. A native of Lynwood, Calif., Tedford played an integral role on Mike Bellotti s staff at Oregon during the seasons a period in which the Ducks posted the Pac-10 s best record of in finishing progressively better each year (8-4 in 98; 9-3 in 99; 10-2 in 00; 11-1 in 01). Under his direction, the 2001 Pac-10 Champions ranked second in rushing offense (196.5 ypg) and third in both scoring (34.0 ppg) and total offense (430.2 ypg) among Conference schools. In 1992 as quarterbacks coach at Fresno State, Tedford began honing the skills of future Super Bowl champion quarterback Trent Dilfer. Under his guidance, the Bulldogs quarterback earned first team All- WAC honors for a team offense that led the nation in scoring (44.2 ppg), ranked second nationally in total offense (541.9) and beat USC in the Freedom Bowl. A season later, Tedford moved up to offensive coordinator, and Fresno State ranked third nationally in scoring and total offense. Tedford made an immediate impact at Oregon when he joined Bellotti in His first season as offensive coordinator, the Ducks set school records in yards passing (3,856), total offense (5,795), and points scored (473). Tedford began his coaching career as a volunteer assistant at Fresno State in 1987, spending two years there before joining Calgary in the Canadian Football League in He served as an offensive assistant with the Stampeders for three seasons. Tedford enjoyed a remarkable playing career, both at Fresno State and in the Canadian Football League. He earned honorable mention All-America notice in 1982, when he set school records for passing (2,993) and TD passes (24). He played in the CFL for six seasons with Hamilton, Calgary, Saskatchewan and Winnipeg.
