Sophomore QB Shea Patterson connected with sophomore WR A.J. Brown on 71 and 77-yard touchdown passes in the third quarter. The 77-yarder was Patterson s longest career completion and Brown s longest career reception, and the longest TD pass since Jevan Snead connected with Mike Wallace for 88 yards in 2008 versus Louisiana-Monroe. It also marked the first time in school history a receiver recorded two 70-plus yard TD catches in the same game. Patterson joined Eli Manning as the only two Rebel QBs with two 70-plus yard touchdown passes in the same game. Manning recorded the feat against Vanderbilt in Patterson completed 28 of 35 attempts (80.0 pct.) for career-best 429 yards and four touchdowns. The 429 yards passing was the most since Chad Kelly threw for 465 yards against Auburn last year and the third most in school history trailing only Kelly and Archie Manning (436). The four TD passes were a personal best and the most since Kelly tossed four scores against Florida State a year ago. 18 SOUTH ALABAMA POSTGAME NOTES -Ole Miss was the fourth different Southeastern Conference school USA has played over the last six seasons. -The loss ended a three-game win streak for the Jaguars on opening day. -It marked the first time in school history that South has surrendered more than 400 yards passing in a game. -Reaves became the fifth player in USA history to surpass 200 tackles in a career with the performance, which included a personal-best two stops behind the line of scrimmage and his first-ever sack at the collegiate level. -Cole shared game-high honors in tackles after being credited with four total stops in three appearances last fall before suffering a season-ending injury. -Sa Mory Collier and Sam Harris led South with four and three catches, respectively, with both recording career-high totals in the category. -It was the first time Patterson connected on multiple field goals since he hit two in a victory over Georgia State on Oct. 29 last fall. -Corliss Waitman s average of 46.4 yards per punt was the best of his career in a game in which he has kicked more than once. -Brown broke an Ole Miss game record first set in 1993 for receiving yards in a game. -Jaylon Jones 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown in the third quarter was the first allowed by the Jaguars since Nov. 6, 2010.

20 On Shea Patterson's play tonight... "I thought it was solid. I think we had the one turnover, but it was very solid. I am very impressed with him, anytime you throw for 400 yards. He scrambled around and made some plays, but the thing you have to remember is that he is a sophomore and is only going to get better and better. We will look at the tape and get all of the little mistakes cleaned up and get the next one." On the joy that comes with his first game... "Yeah just special to have my family here for this moment. "We are just ready to play football. With all the talk around us and everybody talking about us we didn t want to worry about what people say, we just wanted to play." On how he would describe his play... "Strong, physical, hard to tackle and strong hands, just trying to get open." On his ability to go across the middle and not be afraid of contact... "I wouldn t say afraid, nobody wants to get hit in the face, but I am not afraid to go across the middle because I am a bigger guy." On if tonight's game was a relief... "It was. It took a little while for the game to come along when we were just sitting in the hotel room chilling. It was a relief just to play this game." On Coach Matt Luke's first game... "Me, personally, I really knew that the players were going to come out and play for him, 110-percent effort every play, I just knew it. I had the offensive line up there protecting me so that made my job a lot easier." On the receivers... "Someone is going to be open and it's all about finding the right one. 21 On what this first game meant to him... "It really just felt great to go out there and control what we can control and that is to play. With all this stuff going on in the offseason and this summer, it was out of our hands, but once we put that ball down it was in our hands and in our control. I think that's what we focused on the most, was playing our game and doing what we love. I came out for my brothers that I love, my coaches that I love and a university that I love. We had fun." On how he has improved since last season... "Just experience. I am going to go to the film room and watch the tape and the biggest transition for me will be from week one to week two, that's when you really get better." Opening Statement... South Alabama Head Coach Joey Jones First of all, I thought our guys fought their tails off tonight throughout the whole ball game that s the first thing I asked them to do. The goal on defense was not to give them big plays, obviously we achieved that the first half, we did not achieve it the second half. We had a kickoff return for a touchdown; that was not good. But you know, the positive side, I think we held them at a 100 yards. rushing. I thought that offensively we rushed for 170-something against an SEC team; I thought that was really good. We had no turnovers and we had 22 yards in penalties, so a lot of positives from tonight. Obviously, we didn t want to give them big plays, some of that was them. They have some great athletes, they have some future NFL players on that team I promise you. They kind big-played us and that was the difference in the ball game." On improvements in the rushing game... Well I think we've got two really good running backs Tra Minter and Xavier Johnson and our offensive line is better. I knew we were going to find out tonight, one way or another about that. I thought we did a very good job in the first two series. The speed of the game kind of got to us. Those big, fast guys on defense got kind of shocked, but then we got settled in after that and started playing much better. I was real proud of the way we played offensively. To be able to score 27, possibly a chance to score 35 if we punched it in a couple times." On Cole Garvin... I thought Cole played well, I didn t really look at his stats but I know he played with guts, he made some really good throws, he ran the ball well. He didn t have a deer-in-headlights look at all." On what he sees defensively and what he can use from tonight for Friday against Oklahoma State... When you stop the run, you have the chance to beat a lot of people. Unfortunately, that didn t happen tonight. We gave up too many big plays, but within that we stopped the run like we did tonight you have the chance to win a lot of ball games. So, I feel good about that part of it. Again, on the flipside, I don t feel good about the way we tackled, but if we can correct that we can be a pretty darn good football team." On how using the passing game attack can help for next weekend's play...

22 We saw some really good receivers tonight and I know that they got some really good ones as well. They have the No. 1 quarterback in the country, I believe. He s a good one. They re going to throw it they re going to be hurrying up offense at every snap but I m going to be looking at them in the morning. I know they re very good." On Neiko Robinson... No, not yet. I know it was an ankle injury. The X-rays were negative so I know we ll just have to see where it goes from there. South Alabama Student-Athletes #13, Cole Garvin, QB On his thoughts on the game... We executed pretty well. Our only problem was we left stuff on the field. We left a bunch of third downs, we got inside the 3 twice and didn t score. We just left a bunch of stuff down, but for the most part we executed pretty well. On what was happening during the sequence where they scored two really quick and you guys got the field goal in between that on three and out, and then they scored again... On the sideline we are just telling them we have to answer. So, like I said we tried, we executed, we just left stuff on the field in big time situations. On if he felt comfortable playing... Yeah it was fine, we just adjusted the first couple of drives and once you adjust you re fine. #1, Jeremy Reaves, S On his overall thoughts of the game... I think defensively; I mean I take the blame for our defensive performance. That s not what we expect out of ourselves from the back end. It s kind of a letdown. Losing deep is hard, and I take that personally, I take that on my shoulders as far as what we did in the back end because they gassed us back there. They had a lot of big plays that hurt us in the long run. On the positive moments of the game... We had great energy, once we settled in we understood that we could play at a higher level. We started executing the game plan the way we wanted to and we were getting three-and-outs. We were just playing football. That was good to see, especially from the young guys.
