The Lady Griz are ed for second in league with State (9-4, 3-1 BSC) and Eastern Washington (7-6, 3-1 BSC). All three teams trail unbeaten Northern Colorado (6-6, 3-0 BSC), which plays at State Thursday and at Saturday. North Dakota is 2-2 in Big Sky games, 7-6 overall. UND is si ng alone in sixth place in the league standings. Who s ho er? is 6-2 since Nov. 29, with only a pair of two-point losses to Wyoming and Eastern Washington marring its record since Thanksgiving. North Dakota is 3-0 since the Christmas break. UND went on the road and pulled off a stunning win at Utah on Dec. 29, at the me only the Utes second loss of the season, and then held home court last week with wins over floundering Idaho State (6-7, 1-3 BSC) and winless Weber State (0-13, 0-4 BSC). Most recently: played its first Big Sky Conference road games of the season last week and came away with a split at Eastern Washington and Portland State. At Cheney on Thursday, the Lady Griz never held a second-half lead but ed the score on a driving layup by senior Ka e Baker with 14 seconds remaining. The Eagles missed with the clock winding down, and Laura Hughes grabbed the offensive rebound and was fouled on the putback. Her two free throws with 1.8 seconds le sealed the win for Eastern. At Portland on Saturday, senior Kenzie De Boer scored a team-high 25 points, Baker had a brilliant 17-point, 16-rebound doubledouble, and limited the Vikings to 31.7 percent shoo ng in a surprisingly dominant win. Who s the new guy? fans who attended the 2010 and 2011 Lady Griz Holiday Classic might remember North Dakota coach Gene Roebuck. A er turning UND into a Division II powerhouse with three na onal championships to its credit and ge ng the program through the transi on to Division I, Roebuck announced his re rement last season and ended his career with a record at North Dakota of (.812). Travis Brewster, who was on Roebuck s staff as an assistant for nine seasons, though not con nuously, moved up a seat on the bench and is now the head coach. No longer No. 1, but s ll pre y solid: dropped from the na on s No. 1 posi on in fewest turnovers per game a er commi ng 14 turnovers at Eastern Washington and 15 at Portland State. That snapped s streak of four straight games and five of six with nine or fewer turnovers. The Lady Griz, at 11.5 per game, now rank second na onally behind Villanova (11.0/g) in that category. also ranks in the top 10 na onally in assist-to-turnover ra o (fourth at 1.34) and blocked shots (seventh at 6.2/g). The Lady Griz had a season-high 12 blocks in their road win at Portland State last Saturday. The last me UND faced a solid defense (at Northern Colorado just prior to Christmas), it had a ridiculous 33 turnovers. It is his 40th year as either a player or a coach at his alma mater. Selvig was a fouryear member of the Grizzly basketball team ( to ), coached the men s freshman team in and was named UM s women s basketball coach in the summer of 1978, following a three-year s nt coaching high school girls basketball in Plentywood, Mont. In his first 34 years, Selvig coached to a record of (.758), an average of nearly 23 wins per season. During that me, the Lady Griz had 32 winning and win seasons, won 22 regular-season conference championships and advanced to 19 NCAA tournaments. His win seasons is a feat surpassed only by former Tennessee coach Pat Summi (36), Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer (32), former Texas coach Jody Conradt (29) and North Carolina coach Sylvia Hatchell (28) in women s Division I history. Only Summi and Selvig produced those seasons all at the same school. Only Selvig has done it at his alma mater. In December 2011 Selvig coached his 1,000th game at.
