Tipoff is set for 7 p.m., and the game will be broadcast live on 570 WKBN, iheartradio, ESPN3 and WatchESPN. It continues a four-game home stand for the Penguins as they prepare for next week s Horizon League Tournament. YSU will be seeded seventh or eighth in the conference tournament, and it will play Northern Kentucky, Valparaiso or UIC in the opening round of Motor City Madness the afternoon of March 3 at Joe Louis Arena in Detroit. Entering the final weekend of conference play, none of the 10 seeds are locked in. Youngstown State showed it is able to compete with the top team in the standings but fell to Wright State on Saturday. The Penguins led for more than 21 minutes and held a nine-point advantage in the second period. Wright State flipped the game with 8-2 runs to close out both the second and third periods. The contest was within two points twice in the final minute. YSU s only possession where it could take the lead ended with its 22nd turnover of the game. The Raiders outscored the Penguins off turnovers in the game, including 14-0 in the second and third periods. Three of YSU s last five losses have been by four points, and the Penguins trailed by just two in the final 15 seconds in each of those. YSU is 2-6 in games decided by five points or fewer this season after going 7-1 in such contests last season. Mary Dunn is the reigning Horizon League Freshman of the Week, an honor she earned for a league-high fourth time. She averaged 12 points and shot 56.2 percent from the field last week. A top candidate to be named the Horizon League Freshman of the Year, she leads all league freshmen in scoring, field-goal percentage and blocks. Alison Smolinski leads the Horizon League with 75 total 3-pointers and 3.0 3s per game. She has jumped into the all-league conversation by averaging 16.7 points in HL play, which ranks fifth in the conference. She has made 14 more 3s in league play than any other player, and she has made nine more triples than any other player in the country since Jan. 14. With season-ending injuries to three primary players, YSU has had 13 different starting lineups in 27 games this season. Indiya Benjamin has started all 27 games, and Jenna Hirsch is the only other Penguin with more than 20 starts (21). Thirteen different players have started at least once. Benjamin has moved into 20th place on YSU s career scoring list, and she scored a careerhigh 23 points on Saturday against Wright State. She ranks in the top 10 in program history in career assists, 3-pointers and 3-point field-goal percentage.

2 TODAY S GAME A WIN WOULD... Improve YSU s Horizon League record to Allow YSU to split the season series with Oakland. Be YSU s fifth straight against Oakland at home. Allow YSU to win five of the last six meetings with the Golden Grizzlies. Secure a winning record at Beeghly Center for the fifth straight year. ON THIS DATE Youngstown State is 5-8 all time in games played on Feb. 23. The last time the Penguins played on the date was in 2014, and YSU had a memorable win at Green Bay. YSU shot a program and Beeghly Center record 68.8 percent in an win over Western Illinois in Individually, Heidi Schlegel scored her 1,000th point in the win over Green Bay in SCOUTING OAKLAND Oakland is overall and ranks fifth in the Horizon League with a 10-6 conference mark. The Golden Grizzlies come to Youngstown having won five of their six games in February. Oakland leads the league in scoring offense at 76.1 points per game and steals with 11.7 per contest. Individually, graduate transfer Hannah Little averages a double-double of 11.3 points and a league-leading 11.8 rebounds per game. She is one of four Golden Grizzlies averaging at least 10.8 points per game. SERIES WITH OAKLAND YSU and Oakland are 9-9 all time against each other in a series that dates back to the season when both teams were in the Mid-Continent Conference. YSU is 6-3 in the series since Oakland joined the Horizon League with a wins in the Horizon League Tournament in 2014 and The Penguins have won four straight in the series at Beeghly Center. RECENTLY VS. OAKLAND At Oakland on Jan. 22, the Golden Grizzlies scored 15 straight points to take a 15-2 lead in the first period and won After the 15-0 run, the margin was at least seven the rest of the game. Alison Smolinski (13) and Mary Dunn (12) combined for 25 points. Last year at Beeghly Center, YSU overcame a third-period deficit to rally for a win on Feb. 4. The Penguins closed the third on an 8-1 run and outscored the Golden Grizzlies in the fourth. Sarah Cash scored 18 second-half points, and Nikki Arbanas made six 3s. Youngstown State had a great opportunity to beat Horizon League-leading Wright State but came up short in a loss on Saturday at Beeghly Center. The Penguins led for more than 21 minutes and had a nine-point advantage late in the second period. Wright State used a 13-4 run that stretched from the third period to early in the fourth to take the lead, and YSU s late charge came up short. YSU trailed with 1:50 to go and got a stop on defense. The Penguins committed their 22nd turnover on their possession, and Emily Vogelpohl hit a 3-pointer in the corner to put the Raiders up with 44.9 seconds left. YSU trailed with six seconds left when Vogelpohl made two free throws for the final margin. YSU, which came into the game ranking 12th in the country in free-throw percentage at 78 percent, uncharacteristically went 6-for-12 from the line. The Penguins were outscored off turnovers and were minus-15 in turnover margin. That offset a strong effort shooting from the field for the Penguins, who shot 52.1 percent overall (25-for-48) and 40 percent from 3-point range (8-for-20). Indiya Benjamin scored a career-high 23 points and moved into the top 20 in program history in career points. She is averaging a career-best 11.5 points this season. Benjamin added five assists, four rebounds and two steals while playing all 40 minutes. Alison Smolinski scored 20 points and also played all 40 minutes for the Penguins. She upped her scoring average in Horizon League play to Wright State s Chelsea Welch filled the box score with 21 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals. 2

Of those four, Nikki Arbanas set a school record with 89 3s last season, and Sarah Cash was a Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League honoree. YSU has used 13 different starting lineups this season. Nine of those combinations have come in Horizon League play. Indiya Benjamin is the only player to start every game, and 13 different players have started. State has made at least pointers in seven straight seasons. It was one of 17 programs in the country to make at least 200 in each season from up to last season. Alison Smolinski has made 57 3-pointers in her 14 conference games, which is the most ever by a Penguin in Horizon League play. She has 53 of those 3-pointers since Jan. 14. Mary Dunn leads all Horizon League freshmen in three categories points, field-goal percentage and blocks. Youngstown State recorded 21 wins in each of the past two seasons. Dunn was named the Horizon League Freshman of the Week on Monday for the fourth time this season. She has earned the award more than any other freshman. Dunn averaged 12 points and shot 56.3 percent from the field in two games last week. Dunn leads all Horizon League freshmen in scoring, field-goal percentage and blocks. She is averaging 3.5 more points than any other freshman, and she is the only one in her class to rank among the league s top 30 scores (tied for 17th). Additionally, Dunn ranks sixth among the league leaders in field-goal percentage, and she is 10th in blocks per game. She is the only freshman to rank among Horizon League leaders in three categories, and only one other freshman is ranked in two. In terms of importance to the Penguins, Dunn is the only freshman in the Horizon League to rank among the top three scorers on her team. SMOLINSKI AMONG NATION S TOP 3-POINT SHOOTERS Since returning from a concussion on Jan. 14, YSU s Alison Smolinski has made nine more 3-pointers than any other player in the country (as of Monday). She has 53 3-pointers on 109 attempts in that 12 game stretch. Smolinski has made a case to be considered for Horizon League postseason awards. In league games, she ranks fifth in the league in scoring at 16.7 points per game, and she is first in 3s per game and second in 3-point field-goal percentage. In Horizon League play, she is averaging 1.2 more treys than any other player, and she is shooting an impressive 47.9 percent from beyond the arc. The only player in the league ranking above her in percentage has 85 fewer attempts. She has made 57 3s in 14 games (she missed 11 quarters with the concussion), which is the second most during conference play in league history. She is 10 away from the record currently held by Milwaukee s Emily Decorah ( ). Smolinski has already made more 3s in Horizon League play than any Penguin in history. For the year, Smolinski has made 14 more 3s than any other player in the conference, and she impressively is also fourth in the conference in 3-point field-goal percentage at 41.4 percent. Smolinski is on track to be the first guard to lead YSU in scoring since Heather Karner in Smolinski could challenge Nikki Arbanas school record of 89 3-pointers in a season that was set last year. Smolinski has 75 3s in 25 games, 14 behind Arbanas mark that came in 34 contests. In addition to missing two full games and three quarters of another, Smolinski started the season 3-for-26 from beyond the arc in her first four games. BATTLING THROUGH A SEASON OF INJURIES Knee injuries have been devastating to YSU s promising season. Nikki Arbanas went down with a season-ending knee injury on the first day of practice, and fifth-year senior Kelsea Newman tore her ACL in the third period of the season opener. Preseason First-Team All-Horizon League forward Sarah Cash will likely miss the rest of the season with ongoing knee pain after appearing in the first seven games of the season, and freshman Jen Oduho will also miss the remainder of the season with a knee injury. Arbanas, Cash and Newman combined for 1,083 points last season for an average of 31.9 per game. Add in Janae Jackson, who averaged 9.3 points as a senior last season, and YSU is without more than 40 points per game and four of its top five scorers from last season. Other players who have started at least 13 games and missed at least one with an injury include Mary Dunn, Natalie Myers, Alison Smolinski and Kelley Wright. Among the players who are out for the rest of the season: Arbanas made a school-record and Horizon League-leading 89 3-pointers last season Cash preseason First-Team All-HL; ranked fourth in Division I in FG percentage last year Newman fifth-year senior with 143 career 3-pointers 4

5 COACH JOHN BARNES JOHN BARNES Head Fourth Season Personal Grew up in Escanaba, Mich. (Upper Peninsula) Has a twin brother, and the two are the youngest of 12 children. Father and an older brother were also basketball coaches The Basics Career Record: (11th Season) Record at YSU: (Fourth Season) Alma Mater: Michigan Tech, 1995 Degree: scientific & technical communication Highlights at YSU YSU s team GPA has been over 3.4 in each of his first three seasons. The Penguins had the third-best GPA (3.639) in the country in The Penguins have played in a postseason tournament the WNIT in and the WBI in in each of the last two years. Previously, YSU had never had consecutive postseason appearances. YSU has won 21 games in each of the past two seasons for its first stretch of back-toback 20-win seasons since and Youngstown State set a school record for 3-pointers in a season with 299 in YSU has had a post be named All-Horizon League in each of his three seasons. Barnes set a school record for wins by a firstyear head coach (15), and he has the secondbest winning percentage by a YSU coach. Coaching Timeline 2013-Present Youngstown State Head Coach Green Bay Associate Head Coach Michigan Assistant Coach Wisconsin Assistant Coach Michigan Tech Head Coach Michigan Tech Assistant (Men s) St. Nicolai Basketball Club (Denmark) Player Coach Lake Superior St. Assistant (Men s) SEVEN STRAIGHT SEASONS WITH POINTERS 5 Youngstown State has made pointers this season, surpassing 200 for the seventh straight campaign. YSU was one of just 17 programs to make at least 200 in each of the last six, and 10 of those 17 have made 200 in The Penguins did not make 200 in any season prior to The pointers this season rank tied for fifth in YSU s record book. The Penguins are averaging 8.7 3s per game, which is 0.5 higher than second-place Detroit Mercy in the Horizon League rankings. If it can hold on to the top spot, YSU would lead the league in 3s per game for the third straight season and for the fourth time in the last six. In conference play, the Penguins have made a Horizon League-leading pointers 22 more than any other team. YSU is shooting 36.1 percent from beyond the arc in league play, which ranks second in the conference by 0.1 percent. YSU has made at least nine 3-pointers in 15 of its last 19 games after not making more than eight in any of its first eight contests. The Penguins were averaging 5.9 3s per game through the Akron contest on Dec. 6, and they are averaging 9.8 3s since with 187 in 19 games. Youngstown State set a new school and Horizon League record for 3-pointers made and attempted in a season with 299 and 936, respectively, in YSU led the Horizon League and ranked 11th in the country with pointers per game. OFFENSE IN FULL GEAR DESPITE INJURIES Even with three of its top five scorers coming into the season out for the year with injuries, YSU is averaging 68 points per game for the year. That is a 2.7 point improvement from last season, and it is the third-best scoring average by the program in the last 17 years. Additionally, YSU is on track to have one of its five-best seasons in free-throw percentage, 3-pointers made an assist-to-turnover ratio. Plus, its 15.7 assists per game is the best average at YSU since A 102-point effort, the first 100-point outing in 18 years, against Sacramento State on Nov. 20, seemed to get the offense going. YSU then had its best shooting percentage in a game since 2006 when it shot 56.4 percent at Milwaukee on Feb. 9. CHALLENGES OF INEXPERIENCED LINEUP While the offense has still been able to flourish with YSU s young lineup, the lack of experience has hurt the Penguins in three main areas: defense, rebounding and prevailing in close games. YSU is surrendering 73.6 points per game this season, which is 10.5 more than it did last season. Opponents are shooting 43.4 percent from the field, which is a four-percent improvement from YSU is minus-6.6 in rebounding margin for the year and minus-9.2 during conference play. In the Penguins 18 losses, they are being outscored on average by 7.1 points on second-chance points. In six of their losses, including two of the last three, the final scoring margin has been less than YSU s deficit in second-chance points. The Penguins thrived in close games last year, going 7-1 in games decided by five points or fewer. YSU is 2-6 in such games this season, and three of its last five losses have been by four. BENJAMIN IS THE MAINSTAY While there has been a new group on the floor with her, junior point guard Indiya Benjamin is the Penguins mainstay in the lineup. The only active returning player who averaged at least 20 minutes last year, she is averaging career highs of 11.5 points and a Horizon League-leading 5.6 assists in With the veteran spotlight on her, Benjamin s career numbers are starting to approach the program s most elite guards. Benjamin became the eighth player in program history to record 400 career assists in YSU s game against Milwaukee on Jan. 28, and she currently ranks seventh on the all-time list with 435. Plus, she is sixth in program history with 157 made 3-pointers, and her 1.65 assist-to-turnover ratio ranks second in school history. She is 20th in career points. Benjamin should have a good chance to break YSU s career records for 3-pointers and assists next year. She is on pace to finish this season with at least 451 assists and pointers. That would put her 122 assists shy of Danielle Carson s assists record (573) and 37 3-pointers behind Liz Hornberger s record (199).
