2 2005 Wake Forest Football \ season outlook With a roster full of young talent on both sides of the ball, excitement and potential are the buzzwords around the football program at Wake Forest. Offensively, the Deacons have rushed for more than 0,000 yards since head coach Jim Grobe arrived in 200, 8th most in the nation. This year, the Deacon rushing attack will be led by senior All-American candidate Chris Barclay -- who has a chance to become the school s all-time leading rusher. Defensively, there could be many young faces among the starters, but the coaching staff believes there is more collective talent and team speed than ever. With one of the productive offenses in the nation, fearless and dedicated special teams and a fast, young and talented defense, The Rush Is On! QUARTERBACKS: Starters Returning: Letterwinners Returning: 2 Starters Lost: 0 Letterwinners Lost: 0 Technically, Cory Randolph is the returning starter. But Benjamin Mauk started the final three games of the 2004 season. So, who is the starter? That s a question that may not be answered until August. Mauk came out of the spring with a slight lead, but the competition will remain open in preseason. Mauk Grobe hopes to go with one guy in Last year, the signal callers posted similar numbers as Randolph completed 53. percent of his 47 passes while Mauk completed 52. percent of his 94 passes. Randolph Each threw one more interception than touchdown and their efficiency ratings were in the same neighborhood, Randolph s 09.9 to Mauk s Last season, Randolph s biggest advantage over Mauk was experience. With 0 games and three starts under his belt, Mauk is narrowing that gap. However, with a re-vamped offense in 2005, any previous experience may be less relevant. One thing hasn t changed from last year. The coaching staff feels comfortable with either one under center for the Deacons. Redshirt freshman Allan Holland, who performed well in the spring, and junior walk-on Ben Rieling provide valuable depth at the position. In the fall, Wake Forest will welcome two freshmen into the mix -- Brett Hodges (Winter Springs, Fla.) and Riley Skinner (Jacksonville, Fla). TAILBACKS: Starters Returning: Letterwinners Returning: 3 Starters Lost: 0 Letterwinners Lost: Two-time All-ACC selection and All-America candidate Chris Barclay returns as the starting tailback. With 30 career rushing touchdowns to his credit, Barclay has already tied one school record. He enters his senior season just 907 yards shy of becoming Wake Forest s alltime leading rusher. Micah Andrews provides the Deacons with a more than capable back-up. Andrews, a powerful runner, averaged 6. yards per carry last season and scored six touchdowns. Wake Forest also returns De Angelo Bryant, who redshirted last year as a sophomore. In 2003, The Bus saw action in eight games as a true freshmen. Travo Woods has been added from wide receiver. 58 / demon deacon football

3 season outlook / 2005 Wake Forest Football The coaching staff is also very excited about the coming additions of freshmen L.J. Flintall and Kevin Harris. FULLBACKS: Starters Returning: 0 Letterwinners Returning: Starters Lost: 0 Letterwinners Lost: This will be an interesting position to watch in the preseason as three players compete for playing time. Each coming from a different situation. Early last fall, the undisputed starter was Damon McWhite. But during the second game of the year, at East Carolina, McWhite tore knee ligaments and saw his season come to an early end. McWhite s rehab process continued this spring, leaving redshirt freshman Richard Belton as the squad s only fullback for the time being. The spotlight is on Belton and he has the coaching staff s undivided attention. Not only will McWhite be back in preseason, but newcomer Mike Rinfrette (Louisburg, NC) has the potential to play right away for the Deacons. WIDE RECEIVERS: Starters Returning: 2 Letterwinners Returning: 7 Starters Lost: Letterwinners Lost: 2 Wake Forest returns several familiar faces at wide receiver including senior Chris Davis and juniors Willie Idlette and Nate Morton. Sophomore Kevin Marion had a productive rookie season in 2004 with 747 all-purpose yards. The upperclassmen have starting experience and Marion spent Davis quite a bit of time on the field last season, but none have been relied upon as a go-to guy. At least one of those four will need to emerge in the role vacated because of Jason Anderson s graduation. Morton led the team in 2004 Marion with 26 catches for 39 yards, but the second-leading receiver was Barclay, out of the backfield. The Deacons should get a boost from their younger wide receivers, including sophomores Delon Lowe and Kenneth Moore and redshirt freshmen Demir Boldin and Chip Brinkman. TIGHT ENDS: Starters Returning: Letterwinners Returning: 2 Starters Lost: 0 Letterwinners Lost: Because of the injuries at fullback, the Deacons were forced into using a lot of two tight end sets last season. Although not an ideal situation at the time, the experience gained by Zac Selmon and John Tereshinski could prove to be valuable in Now sophomores, Selmon (9 games) and Tereshinski (3) both have starting experience, giving the Deacons the luxury of having two young players to lean upon. The Deacons will welcome two freshmen this summer who will have a chance to contribute as rookies, Ted Randolph (Mocksville, N.C.) and Ben Wooster (Atlanta, Ga). OFFENSIVE LINE: Starters Returning: 4 Letterwinners Returning: 7 Starters Lost: Letterwinners Lost: 3 Wake Forest returns four starters from last year s offensive line. But entering the spring, the deck has already been shuffled as returning starters have moved to new positions on the line. It s being done in an attempt to shore up a line that was short on depth in It should make for one of the Vallos most competitive areas on the Vallos football field. Up to nine returning players will battle for significant playing time and the coaching staff expects the infusion of seven freshmen to raise the competition even higher. The team s best offensive lineman is junior Steve Vallos. The Deacons have had an All-ACC offensive lineman in each of Grobe s four years at Wake Forest. Last year, Vallos was the Deacon selection and he was only a sophomore. Vallos was a Renaissance Man on the offensive line in 2004, starting at four different positions. This year, the coaching staff would like to put him at right tackle and leave him alone. After Vallos, jobs on the offensive line are up for grabs. Last season, junior Greg Adkins started eight games at right guard. But this spring, he has moved to center where he is competing for the starting job at center with Steve Justice. Matthew Brim started 0 games at right tackle as a freshman in 2004, but this spring he has moved to right guard in the place vacated by Adkins. Brim is being challenged by true freshman Chris DeGeare. Just 8 years old, DeGeare graduated high school a semester early and is already the biggest player in the program at 6-foot-6, 340 pounds. At left guard, Arby Jones started the final seven games last year. He got into the starting lineup after Brodie Overstreet was sidelined with an eye injury. Originally thought to be a career-ending injury, Overstreet has been medically cleared to play after meeting with leading eye doctors. Overstreet and Jones are going toe-to-toe for the starting job at left guard. Finally, at left tackle another good battle is ongoing between senior Wesley Bryant and sophomore Louis Frazier. When the freshmen class comes to Winston- Salem in August, the Deacons will add six more offensive linemen -- not counting Chris DeGeare who arrived in the spring. The coaching staff expects to see one or two to develop into key contributors immediately. Defensive Line: Starters Returning: 3 Letterwinners Returning: 7 Starters Lost: Letterwinners Lost: 3 One of the biggest question marks in the 2004 preseason, the defensive line held their own last season. Now, in 2005, it s considered to be one of the areas of greatest strength and depth. The Deacons have a nice blend of youth and experience. In fact, some of that youth already owns experience. The returning starters are junior Jyles Tucker and redshirt sophomore Matt Robinson. Robinson led the demon deacon football \ 59

4 2005 Wake Forest Football \ season outlook Deacons in 2004 as a redshirt freshman with 0 tackles for loss. However, the pre-spring depth chart has true sophomore Jeremy Thompson, who has added 20 pounds and owns unlimited potential, is listed ahead of Tucker. Robinson The most experienced player on the defense is fifth-year senior Goryal Scales, who has 7 career starts to his credit. Redshirt sophomore Zach Stukes is penciled in as the other starting defensive Thompson tackle, but he is closely followed by senior John Finklea and juniors Jamil Smith and Bryan Andrews. The Deacons have a stable of young, talented defensive linemen who should provide outstanding depth. That group includes redshirt freshmen Anthony Davis and Brandon Drumgoole. The Deacons signed three lineman in February who promise to be factors in years to come. LINEBACKERS: Starters Returning: Letterwinners Returning: 4 Starters Lost: 2 Letterwinners Lost: 2 There may not be a more excited assistant coach on staff than linebackers coach Brad Lambert. That s because he is finally able to take the redshirts off a quartet of young linebackers that hold a great deal of promise. Although there is great anticipation surrounding the debuts of Stanley Arnoux, Eric Berry, Aaron Curry and Antonio Wilson, it s easy Abbate to forget that the Deacons return four players with significant experience. The newcomers will have to unseat the veterans. Heading the list of veterans is sophomore Jon Abbate, an honorable mention All-ACC pick as a rookie, and one of four players in the ACC last year to record 00 tackles. Pierre Easley, who is expected to move outside to accommodate Abbate in the middle, also returns. Fifthyear senior Jason Pratt has been a back-up for three years and a contributor on special teams. He gets first crack at nailing down a starting job opposite Easley. Napoleon Sykes and James Adams are also veterans with experience. Adams missed almost all of the 2004 season with a knee injury suffered while making a tackle at Clemson. The already young and talented group will be bolstered in August by the arrival of Greensboro prep star Dominique Midgett. SECONDARY: Starters Returning: 2 Letterwinners Returning: 8 Starters Lost: 2 Letterwinners Lost: 3 The good news is that Wake Forest returns both of their talented, young safeties. Patrick Ghee and Josh Gattis started all games at strong safety and free safety, respectively. The bad news is that Wake Forest has to replace both of its starting cornerbacks including Gattis Eric King, a two-time All-ACC selection, and Marcus McGruder, who set an ACC single season record with three interception returns for touchdowns. The Deacons will lean on junior Riley Swanson to be the elder P. Ghee statesman of the bunch. After Swanson, there is a lot of young talent, but a very limited amount of experience. Wake Forest will look to a redshirt sophomore, Johnny Edwards, and three redshirt freshmen, Kerry Major, Kevin Patterson and Alphonso Smith to fill the other starting position. The coaching staff feels confident that group will be able to handle those responsibilities. If that group doesn t step up, the Deacons have two freshmen -- Brandon Ghee and Channing Schofield -- coming this summer with excellent credentials. Special Teams: Starters Returning: 2 Letterwinners Returning: 2 Starters Lost: Letterwinners Lost: 2 Few teams are in as comfortable of a situation with their punter than are the Demon Deacons. Senior Ryan Plackemeier is a two-time first team All-ACC selection and statistically, the best punter in the history of the conference. The Deacons are expecting to turn the placekicking responsibilities to redshirt freshman Sam Plackemeier Swank. Swank was a priority in Wake Forest s recruiting class in He will be pressed into duty a year early. Matt Wisnosky is not expected to return from knee injury that ended his season in October last year. Sophomore long snapper Nick Jarvis, who, along with Jeremy Thompson, were the only two true freshmen to see game action in He should fulfill the long snapper duties again in the fall. The Deacons expect to be looking for a new holder in 2005 after the graduation of Steve Hale, a back-up punter. Plackemeier is a leading candidate to take over those duties. Wake Forest would like to get more out of its kick return game in The Deacons ranked last in punt and kickoff returns. Additional depth should help shore up those numbers. Kevin Marion, who possesses gamebreaking speed, and Micah Andrews, a punishing ball carrier, return as the kick returners. Willie Idlette has returned punts since his freshman year and has proven to be an all-purpose threat. 6 2005 Wake Forest Football \ preseason notebook Packing Groves Stadium: Every year since 2002, Wake Forest has broken its home attendance record. In fact, four of the largest single game crowds in stadium history have gathered in the last three years. Last season, the biggest crowd in Groves Stadium history -- 37,623 fans -- crammed Groves Stadium to see Wake Forest play North Carolina. For that game, temporary bleachers were added in the north endzone and on Deacon Hill. Since 200, Jim Grobe s first year at Wake Forest, attendance has increased by 33 percent. In 2004, the Deacons averaged more than 30,000 fans in its 3,500-seat facility for the first time ever. Season ticket sales are also are up 0 percent over last year s figures -- an all-time high. The Rush Has Been On: Since 200, the year Jim Grobe took the reigns as head coach, Wake Forest has rushed for 0,279 yards, tops in the ACC and eighth-most in the nation. Chris Barclay can claim 2,745 of those yards while Tarence Williams (,870) and Cornelius Birgs (72) round out the top three. Total Rushing Yards Since 200 in Division I: Rk. 7 preseason notebook / 2005 Wake Forest Football Deacons Get New Threads: When the Deacons don their home black uniforms in 2005, perceptive fans will notice a subtle change in the color scheme. In recent years, the black jerseys featured the names in white and the numbers and WF logo in white with an Old Gold shadow. In 2005, Old Gold replaces white as the dominant contrasting color. The names will be Old Gold and the numbers and WF logo will be Old Gold with a white shadow. The neck and sleeves will continue to be outlined in Old Gold. Another minor change to the uniform, both home and away, will be on the helmets. In previous years, the nameplate over the facemask read DEACS. Beginning in 2005, all 2 schools in the Atlantic Coast Conference will have ACC on that plate. Wake Forest s road white jerseys will remain the same. 8 2005 Wake Forest Football \ preseason notebook Senior All-American Candidate Chris Barclay is nearing Wake Forest career records in many rushing categories. Quite simply, he is... Running Into The Record Book A two-time All-ACC selection, Chris Barclay enters his senior season just 907 yards shy of becoming Wake Forest s all-time leading rusher. Barclay needs to average about 9 yards per contest to break the record. The native of Louisville, Ky., already has 30 career rushing touchdowns, tied for the most in school history. Barclay posted,000-yard seasons as a sophomore and a junior and is the first Demon Deacon to have reached the,000-yard plateau in consecutive seasons. In fact, Barclay is only the 3th player in ACC history to accomplish the feat. With,000 yards this season, Barclay would not only become Wake Forest s all-time leading rusher but also the fourth player in ACC history to rush for,000 yards in three straight seasons. Not surprisingly, Barclay is one of the most productive active rushers in the nation. He ranks third among all active NCAA running backs and no running back from a BCS conference has more career yards. An excellent student, Barclay is on course to graduate next May with a degree in health and exercise science. He says in 0 years, he plans to be married with kids and running his own physical therapy practice. Career Rushing Leaders. James McDougald (976-79) ,8 2.
