Media Information ACC Coaches Teleconference The ACC will hold a teleconference for the media each Wednesday from 10:30 AM to 12:30 PM through the season. The first session will be August 27 and the last will be Tuesday, November 25. Each coach will have 10 minutes to make an opening statement and answer questions. The feed will be from 2:30 PM to 4:00 PM. Satellite/Channel:...AMC3/Transponder 19 (C-Band) Located: degrees West Downlink Frequency: MHz Official Athletic Website Press Box There are two levels to the press box at Memorial Stadium, located in the center of the club level of the South stands (Clemson sideline). The first level contains the photo deck, a photographer work room, the outside public address system, stadium operations, and security, along with booths for field telephones, radio networks, and Clemson Athletic Department officials. The second level is for the print media, with seats for 124 members. This level houses Clemson s buffet along with the work room. Press Entrance to Memorial Stadium The press parking lot (for media who cover Clemson on a regular basis) at Memorial Stadium is at the football practice fields. Other parking is available for out-of-town media (contact Tim Bourret). Enter the gate and proceed to the elevator. Wireless/Phones We have wireless internet service for football games in the Memorial Stadium Press Box. If you wish to order a phone at your seat, call Karen Smith at the Clemson Telecommunications Office at (864) Weekly Press Conference Tommy Bowden s weekly press conference is held on Tuesdays during the season. The first session will begin at 11:00 AM on August 26 in the McFadden Building auditorium. The media will interview Bowden from 11:00 AM to approximately 11:45 AM on Tuesdays. Players will be available both prior to Bowden s press conference and after, depending on class schedules. Contact Tim Bourret for specific player requests. Player interviews are held Monday at Vickery Hall between 10:15 AM and 12:30 PM, on Tuesdays at the press conference, and on Wednesday afternoon at the SID office. No player interviews are allowed on Thursday or Friday. 1

13 Heroes of the South Carolina Series 1928 Injured All-American O.K. Pressley came off the bench in the second half to record a tackle for loss on four straight plays to thwart a drive deep in Tiger territory. It is still the only time in history a Tiger has made a tackle for loss on four straight plays. Clemson went on to a 32-0 win in Columbia With just 4:30 left in the game and South Carolina on its own 28, Phil Prince broke through the line to block a punt. The ball rolled to the 11, where Oscar Thompson scooped it up and ran for a touchdown, giving Clemson a 13-7 lead, the eventual final score. Clemson went on to an undefeated year Harvey White made the last Big Thursday game a success story for the Tigers. The gifted Clemson quarterback connected on 9-10 passes for 162 yards and two touchdowns, leading Clemson to a 27-0 victory. White s passing efficiency of 282 for that game is still the second best in Clemson history (given a minimum of 10 attempts) All-America offensive guard Harry Olszewski ran 12 yards for a touchdown with a fumbled snap from center to lead Clemson to a win that clinched the ACC title for the Tigers. No Clemson offensive lineman has scored a touchdown since Clemson clinched a third-straight ACC title behind ACC Player-of-the-Year Buddy Gore. The Tiger running back gained 189 yards on 31 carries, still the second -most rushing yards by a Tiger against the Gamecocks. The performance allowed Gore to go over the 1,000-yard rushing mark, a first in Tiger history, and to win the ACC rushing title Two Tigers, one on each side of the ball, had a memorable performance in this Clemson victory. Running back Ken Callicutt rushed for 197 yards on 27 carries and added another 55 in pass receiving, leading Clemson to a win over the Gamecocks. The 197 yards rushing and 252 all-purpose yards are still high-water marks for a Clemson player in the series. Willie Anderson dominated the defense, recording 21 tackles, still a Tiger record for a lineman. He was named National Defensive Player-of-the-Week by Sports Illustrated Jerry Butler made a diving backwards reception of a 20-yard pass from Steve Fuller with 49 seconds remaining, giving the Tigers a victory in Columbia. The play might be regarded as the most famous in Clemson history. The victory gave the Tigers an record and a bid to the Gator Bowl, Clemson s first bowl bid in 18 years Defensive back Willie Underwood played 47 games for the Tigers, but never had an interception until his final contest. He made up for it in his last game as a Tiger when he had two thefts for a combined 101 yards in returns. His 37-yard interception return for a touchdown iced Clemson s 27-6 victory. It is still the most interception return yards in a single game by a Tiger. Underwood also had 17 tackles in the game and was named National Defensive Player-of-the-Week by Sports Illustrated For the second time in history a blocked punt proved pivotal in the Tigers securing a perfect season. The key play in Clemson s victory over South Carolina in Columbia was a blocked punt by Rod McSwain. The ball was recovered in the endzone by Johnny Rembert for a touchdown, giving Clemson a 7-6 lead. The play began at the 28-yard-line, just as the play in 1948 had. McSwain and Rembert went on to be NFL teammates for many years with the New England Patriots. McSwain s brother, Chuck had 151 yards rushing to lead the Clemson offense Rodney Williams, playing in his final home game, led the Tigers to a win in Death Valley, avenging a 20-7 Clemson defeat the year before in which Williams, a native of Columbia, was taunted by the Gamecock faithful. Williams completed passes for 192 yards and ran for 38 more and a touchdown, outplaying rival Todd Ellis, who completed 11 passes in 30 attempts. It was Williams 31st victory as Clemson s starting signal-caller DeChane Cameron had the top all-around performance of his career in a win at South Carolina. The senior, playing in his final regularseason game, rushed for 116 yards and passed for 206. The 322 yards of total offense is a Tiger series record Emory Smith gained 101 yards rushing in just 12 carries from his fullback slot, leading Clemson to a victory and a berth in the Gator Bowl. Smith will be remembered for one particular run in the fourth quarter when he dragged a South Carolina tackler for nearly 20 yards at the end of a 54-yard romp. Smith scored two touchdowns on the day Antwan Edwards had two interceptions in the third quarter alone, one a return of 42 yards for a touchdown, leading Clemson to a win and a berth in the Peach Bowl. Edwards thefts led to a 27-point third quarter, Clemson s highest-scoring quarter in history against the Gamecocks. He was named ACC Player-of-the-week for his performance Howard Bartley will always be remembered for a 48-yard interception return for a touchdown in his final game as a Tiger. It was a key secondhalf play in Clemson s victory, but especially rewarding for Bartley, who had overcome two torn ACL injuries in his five-year career & 2000 Rod Gardner will be held in high esteem by Clemson fans for years to come for his accomplishments against South Carolina. In 1999 he had six catches for 138 yards and two scores, including a game-clinching 29-yard catch from Woodrow Dantzler on a fourth-down play with just 6:41 remaining in the game. The following year at Clemson, he had four catches for 107 yards, including a 50-yard grab from Dantzler that set up Aaron Hunt s game-winning field goal with three seconds remaining Charlie Whitehurst might be regarded as the ultimate hero of the Clemson-South Carolina series from a Tiger standpoint. He led the Tigers to four consecutive victories, the first starting quarterback on either side of the series to do it. In his first two games against the Gamecocks, he had recordsetting performances. He completed passes for 287 yards in leading Clemson to a win in The completion total was the most-ever by a Tiger against South Carolina. In 2003, he completed passes for 302 yards and four touchdowns to go with 43 yards rushing. He established a record for passing yards, touchdown passes, and total offensive yards by a Tiger against the Gamecocks. In 2004, he quarterbacked the Tigers to their third consecutive win over the Gamecocks by a score of He finished off his regular-season career with a 13-9 victory over South Carolina. His 10-yard run on third down iced the game for the Tigers on their last possession. For his career, he completed passes for 912 yards and four touchdowns against the Gamecocks. He also completed 65.4 percent of his passes Clemson had many heroes in its 2007 victory over South Carolina in Columbia. The most obvious was the 35-yard field goal by Mark Buchholz on the game s final play, a kick that gave the Tigers a victory. Many times in the series, a Tiger senior has had a landmark accomplishment that has had a big impact on the outcome. La Donte Harris provided that in 2007 when he picked up a punt that was blocked by fellow wideout Nelson Faerber and raced 10 yards for a touchdown, giving Clemson a 10-0 lead. That was Clemson s first blocked punt for a score against the Gamecocks since Later in the game, it was Harris who blocked a punt, so he was involved in two blocked punts in the contest. Clemson s game-winning drive was the result of outstanding passing from Cullen Harper to Aaron Kelly. The two connected four times for 70 yards on the drive that led to the game-winning kick. 13

14 Clemson Tiger Sports Network The Clemson Tiger Sports Network supplies Tiger fans with a full day of broadcast each football Saturday. Each broadcast day has three programs, Tiger Tailgate Show, Game Day Broadcast, and the Fifth Quarter Show. A Clemson tradition since the 1970s, the Tiger Tailgate Show is a two-hour entertainment and interactive program. It is produced on the lawn of Littlejohn Coliseum at the corner closest to Memorial Stadium. The program begins three hours prior to kickoff. Duane Evans, Ben Milstead, Don Munson, and Ralph Patterson will host the show. It is the gathering place on gameday. Sapp is currently a development officer for the Clemson Alumni Association. As has been the case in the past, the gameday broadcast begins with the Tommy Bowden Pregame Show. Bowden meets with Sports Information Director Tim Bourret to provide Clemson fans with the latest lineup and strategy information. Yanity and Merritt also provide a last-minute scene-setter that includes the latest lineup and weather information. 17 2007 Season Notes Tigers Second in the Nation in Turnovers One of the keys to Clemson s success on offense in 2007 was controlling the football. The Tigers committed just 12 turnovers, and that includes three lost fumbles on special teams, two of which were failed recoveries of onside kicks (failure to recover an onside kick counts as a lost fumble statistically). The Tigers had just six lost fumbles and threw only six interceptions in 13 games. Only Ball State (11 turnovers) committed fewer turnovers than Clemson. With just 12 turnovers in 13 games, Clemson averaged less than one turnover per game. That was the second-best figure in school history. Clemson s 1940 team averaged just 0.88 turnovers per game. That was Frank Howard s first Tiger team. He never had a team finish in the top 10 in Clemson history in that category the rest of his career. Clemson was ninth in the nation in turnover margin, its highest finish in that category under Head Coach Tommy Bowden. Clemson forced 25 turnovers and committed just 12. Clemson s highest national finish in turnover margin is second (1988,89). Both of those teams finished second in the nation in turnover margin with an identical margin per game. The previous best mark under Bowden was an 11th-place finish in 1999, when Clemson was per game. Fewest Tiger Turnovers in a Season Rk Year G TO TO/G Clemson Returned to Top 25 Clemson was ranked #21 by AP and #22 by USA Today to close the season. The Tigers were ranked in the top 25 for their final five games of the season. The Tigers were ranked in the AP poll for five straight weeks and the USA Today poll for four straight weeks early in the season. The appearance ended after the loss to #14 Virginia Tech on October 6. Clemson had been ranked #22 entering that game. The Tigers were ranked as high as #13 in the nation after their 4-0 start. Clemson was not ranked in the preseason, but it jumped into the AP poll after it defeated #19 Florida State on Labor Day night. It marked the second time in the last three seasons that Clemson was not ranked in the AP preseason poll, then defeated a top-25 team in the season-opener to move into the top 25 by the second week. In 2005, Clemson defeated #17 Texas A&M in the season-opener, then it moved into the poll the following week at #25 in the AP poll. Clemson s final top-25 ranking in 2007 marked the third time in the last five years that Clemson was not ranked in the preseason, then finished the season ranked in the top 25. Clemson was ranked in the preseason of the AP poll in 2006 and reached a high of #10 in the nation after a 7-1 start. Tommy Bowden s team was ranked in the top 25 in the nation 11 weeks during the 2006 season as well. The 2007 season was the sixth in Bowden s nine years that Clemson was ranked at least once in the top 25. The Tigers were ranked in all 17 polls in 2000, and they were also ranked in 2001, 2003, 2005, 2006, and Clemson was not ranked the entire year until the final poll in 2003, the only season in school history that that has happened. Clemson has been ranked in the final top 25 four times in Bowden s career, including 2000, 2003, 2005, and Clemson has been ranked in the top 25 of each poll (but not necessarily at the same time) 54 weeks under Bowden as well. Tigers Had Five-Game Win Streak vs. Top-25 Teams Clemson s win over #19 Florida State on Labor Day night was the fifth-straight victory for the Tigers against a top-25 ranked team. That was the first time since the era that Clemson had five-straight wins over top-25 ranked teams, and it was just the second time in school history. The streak was broken when #14 Virginia Tech defeated the Tigers by a score of at Memorial Stadium on October 6. Clemson s streak of top-25 ranked wins dated to November 12, 2005, when Clemson defeated #16 Florida State. In the final regular-season game of 2005, the Tigers won at #19 South Carolina. The Tigers then had two top-25 wins in 2006, including a win at #9 Florida State and a 31-7 win over #13 Georgia Tech. After a 3-14 record against top-25 ranked teams to start his Tiger career, Head Coach Tommy Bowden has won 10 of his last 16 since Three of the losses since the 2003 season were in overtime. Clemson s win over Florida State in 2007 was its 58th top-25 win in history, including its 26th in Death Valley. State, Maryland, Duke, and South Carolina on the road, and it lost at Georgia Tech. The 2007 squad was one of the best road teams in the last 25 years. Since 1982, only the 1995 (5-0), 1997 (4-1), 1988 (4-1), and 1989 (4-1) teams have also won at least 80 percent of their road games. Clemson s offense was outstanding in three of the five road games. The Tigers scored over 40 points at Duke and N.C. State, and they scored 30 points at Maryland. The 13-point victory margin at Maryland was Clemson s largest in College Park in 12 years. The 22-point victory margin at N.C. State (42-20) was the best since And the 37-point victory margin at Duke was Clemson s best-ever in Durham and the Tigers best in any ACC road game since Tigers First ACC Team to Beat FSU Three Straight When the Tigers downed #19 Florida State in the season-opener, Clemson became the first ACC team to defeat the Seminoles three consecutive years since they joined the league in The list only includes games that are conference contests. Miami (FL) defeated Florida State six straight times between , but the Hurricanes were not yet in the ACC at the time. The win over Florida State was also noteworthy in other areas. Florida State had been 16-1 in season-opening games the last 17 years, and Bobby Bowden had been 27-4 in season-opening games as Florida State s head coach. The Seminoles had been 13-2 in ACC openers entering that game as well. Tigers Went Over 600 Total Yards Twice Clemson gained 608 yards of total offense in the victory at N.C. State on September 22, tied for the fourth-highest total in school history. The record performance is 756 yards in an win over Wake Forest in Clemson then trumped that performance at Death Valley in the win over Central Michigan with a 656-yard performance. The Tigers had 341 rushing yards and 315 passing yards, the first time in Tiger history they had at least 300 yards of each in the same game. It was the second-highest total in school history as well. While the 608 yards at N.C. State was the fifth-best performance in school history, it was the best ever in an ACC road game. The previous best was 567 at N.C. State in The 608 yards at N.C. State in 2007 also were the most in a road game for the Tigers since 1903, when Clemson had 615 yards at Georgia Tech. John Heisman was Clemson s coach for that game. The Georgia Tech people were so impressed that they offered to pay Heisman a higher salary than Clemson and convinced him to move to Atlanta to coach its team the next season. Clemson s 608 yards of total offense also was the most for a Tiger team in school history against the Wolfpack. The Tigers gained 340 rushing yards, also the best ever for Clemson against the Wolfpack. The previous high mark was its 304 rushing yards during Clemson s National Championship season of The Tigers have never lost a game in their history when they total at least 200 rushing yards and 200 passing yards in the same game. 18 2007 Season Notes The only blemish is a tie at Georgia Tech in 1976, a game in which Clemson had 248 rushing yards and 234 passing yards. Clemson is in its history when it gains at least 500 yards. The only blemish is a 514-yard performance in a tie with Virginia in Clemson is when it rushes for at least 300 yards and 73-0 when it totals at least 322 as well. Tigers Blocked Two Punts at South Carolina Clemson did not block a punt in its first 11 regular-season games of 2007, then it had two in the win at South Carolina on November 24, including one by reserve senior wide receiver La Donte Harris and one by reserve junior wideout Nelson Faerber. Harris actually scored a touchdown on Faerber s block in the first quarter, then Harris blocked one himself in the third quarter. It was just the fourth time on record that Clemson blocked at least two punts in a game. The last time Clemson had at least two blocked punts was against Auburn in the Peach Bowl at the end of the 1997 season. Clemson had three blocks in that game against Auburn, including two by Rahim Abdullah and one by Rod Gardner. Gardner s block resulted in an 18-yard blocked punt return for a touchdown by Chad Speck. One of Abdullah s blocked punts set up a two-yard touchdown run by Terry Witherspoon. The only other games on record that Clemson blocked two punts in the same game were against The Citadel in 1954 and Maryland in Four Tigers Named First-Team All-ACC Junior running back James Davis, junior wide receiver Aaron Kelly, senior offensive guard Chris McDuffie, and senior offensive tackle Barry Richardson were all named First-Team All-ACC in Junior quarterback Cullen Harper and junior safety Michael Hamlin were also second-team selections, while Phillip Merling (DE), Dorell Scott (DT), and C.J. Spiller (Specialist) each received honorable mention honors. Davis (Atlanta, GA) rushed for 1,064 yards in 13 games, good for an average of 81.8 yards per contest. He averaged 5.0 yards per carry and scored 10 rushing touchdowns. In his three-year career at Clemson, he has totaled for 3,130 rushing yards and 36 rushing touchdowns. It was the second straight year that Davis was named First-Team All-ACC, the first Tiger running back to do that since Terry Allen (1987,88). Kelly (Marietta, GA) set the school record for receptions in a season with 88. He also had 1,081 receiving yards and a Tiger-record 11 receiving touchdowns. His first-team selection gave the Tigers a First-Team All-ACC wideout for four consecutive seasons. McDuffie (Danville, VA) and Richardson (Mount Pleasant, SC) were two big reasons the Tigers were in the top three in the ACC in almost every offensive category. McDuffie, originally a defensive lineman at Clemson, helped pave the way for Davis and Spiller to rush for a combined 1,832 yards in Richardson, a four-year starter, was the Tigers top-graded offensive lineman in Richardson was a First-Team All-ACC pick in 2006 as well. Both McDuffie and Richardson helped protect Harper, who set numerous school records. Harper (Alpharetta, GA) completed 65 percent of his passes for 2,991 yards and a school-record 27 touchdown passes against only six interceptions. His pass efficiency rating was sixth-best in Clemson history, while his 2,991 passing yards were second-most in Tiger history. He also accounted for 30 total touchdowns, second in Clemson history behind the 31 recorded by Woodrow Dantzler in Hamlin (Timmonsville, SC) was the Tigers lone defensive All-ACC selection, as he has led the Tigers to a #9 national finish in total defense. For the season, he had a team-tying-high four interceptions and 97 tackles along with two recovered fumbles to give him a team-best six takeaways. Clemson s six total selections tied for fourthmost among conference members, trailing only Georgia Tech s eight All-ACC selections, and Boston College s and Virginia Tech s seven selections. Wake Forest (5), North Carolina (4), Virginia (4), Florida State (3), Maryland (3), Miami (2), N.C. State (2), and Duke (1) were also represented on the All- ACC team. Clemson s four first-team selections only trailed Georgia Tech s five first-team selections as well. Clemson had the most first-team selections on offense with four. It marked the second straight season that Clemson had four First-Team All-ACC picks on offense. Harper & Hamlin Named Permanent Captains Junior quarterback Cullen Harper and junior safety Michael Hamlin were both named permanent captains of the 2007 team by Head Coach Tommy Bowden, announced after a bowl practice in December. The captains were selected by a vote of team members. It marked the first time since the 1977 season that two non-seniors were named offensive and defensive captains in the same year. Thirty-one years ago, junior quarterback Steve Fuller and junior linebacker Randy Scott were named permanent captains. We had a lot of leaders on this football team, said Bowden. We had more people receive votes than in any other season since I have been at Clemson. The fact that we had a lot of players receive votes tells me that we had a lot of leaders, and that is a reason for our 9-4 record. Harper became the fourth quarterback under Bowden to be named a permanent offensive captain. Brandon Streeter (1999), Woodrow Dantzler (2001), and Charlie Whitehurst (2005) were also named permanent captains during their senior seasons. Harper became the first underclassman named since Louis Solomon in Harper led the ACC in passing efficiency in 2007 with a figure. He had a school-record 27 touchdown passes against just six interceptions, and he passed for 2,991 yards. He also completed 65 percent of his passes and set 22 school records. He led Clemson to nine wins, the most by a firstyear starter at quarterback since 1990, when DeChane Cameron quarterbacked Clemson to a 10-2 record. Hamlin was second on the team in tackles (97). He led the team in takeaways (6) and had 10 passes defended. Hamlin was a big reason Clemson finished in the top 10 in the nation in total defense and scoring defense. McDuffie & Richardson Named All-Americans Senior offensive linemen Barry Richardson and Chris McDuffie were both named to All-America teams for the 2007 season. Richardson, a tackle from Mount Pleasant, SC, was named a first-team All-American by CollegeFootballNews.com and second-team All-American by the Walter Camp Foundation. McDuffie, a guard from Danville, VA, was named a second-team All-American by Sporting News. It marked the first time in Clemson history that two different offensive linemen made a first or second-team All-America team in the same season. It also marked the second straight year that Clemson had an offensive guard named to an All-America team, as Nathan Bennett was an AP Third-Team All- American in Richardson became the first Tiger offensive tackle to make an All-America team since Jim Bundren was an AP Third-Team All-American in Both Richardson and McDuffie were named First-Team All-ACC in It marked the second straight year that Richardson was selected First- Team All-ACC. Richardson was a starter since his freshman season of 2004 and started 44 consecutive games at one point. He was a two-time ACC Offensive Lineman-of-the-Week in 2007 and finished his career with over 200 knockdown blocks. He played 2,778 snaps in his career, fifth-most in school history. McDuffie started 11 of the 13 games in 2007, missing just one game due to an elbow injury. He played 619 snaps in 2007 and 1,179 during his career. McDuffie was in his first year as a full-time starter. He started the last five games of 2006 after Roman Fry suffered a season-ending injury. Both players were big reasons Clemson led the ACC in scoring offense and was second in total offense. The Tigers were 9-4 and ranked #15 in the final BCS poll, their highest BCS ranking since the 2000 season. Clemson was also ranked #21 in the final AP poll and #22 in the final USA Today poll. Davis & Spiller Combined for 280 at N.C. State James Davis and C.J. Spiller, known as Thunder & Lightning, had their second-best career game in the win at N.C. State on September 22. They combined for 280 rushing yards on 45 carries and scored a combined four touchdowns, including 18

Their best combined day came against #13 Georgia Tech in 2006 when Davis had 216 rushing yards and Spiller picked up 116 rushing yards in a 31-7 victory. The 332-yard total is the second-highest combined by two Tigers in the same game in history. The duo also went over 100 rushing yards at Maryland on October 27. Davis had 29 carries for 129 yards, while Spiller added 17 carries for 106 yards. The performance at Maryland marked the fourth time in their careers that they each gained at least 100 yards in the same game. They did it in 2006 against the Yellow Jackets and in the win over Louisiana Tech. Spiller and Davis have set the Clemson record for 100-yard rushing games by a running back duo. Stacey Driver and Kenny Flowers had three games in which they each had 100 yards. Those were Tommy Bowden s 13th and 14th wins over national championship head coaches. He is now 2-1 against Spurrier and has won four of his last five against his father. In 2005 and 2007, he downed both Bobby Bowden and Spurrier in the same year. He became just the third coach to do it in the same season, joining Phillip Fulmer of Tennessee (1998) and Butch Davis of Miami (FL) (2000). Both of the aforementioned coaches (Bobby Bowden, Spurrier) have won the national title. 20 2007 Season Notes Clemson s Record By Uniform Under Bowden Clemson has used eight different uniform combinations since Tommy Bowden became head coach in That includes the all purple attire Clemson wore for the Georgia Tech game in Clemson seniors that season recommended the uniform because they wanted to make history. They did with a win over the #13 Yellow Jackets by a score of In 2003, the Tigers broke out purple jerseys for the Georgia Tech game in Atlanta on September 20, and the Tigers gained a convincing 39-3 victory. It was the first time that Clemson had worn purple jerseys since the 1991 season, when Clemson wore them in a regular-season game against N.C. State and for a bowl game against California. Clemson has a 6-0 record under Bowden in purple jerseys and orange pants, including the 2006 win over N.C. State. He became the first Tiger athlete to play football and soccer at the same time since Donald Igwebuike played both in The Tiger soccer season ended on November 14 with a loss in the ACC Tournament, so Buchholz had just football to worry the rest of the season. He had a busy weekend on September 21-22, as he played for the soccer team on Friday night against top-ranked Wake Forest at Clemson s Riggs Field. After the game, he flew on the school plane to Raleigh and then played at 12:00 PM against N.C. State at Carter-Finley Stadium. He scored a season-high 16 points on the gridiron that day. The native of Alpharetta, GA is not a stranger to the gridiron. He played football at Chattahoochee High School, the same school that produced former Tiger quarterback Charlie Whitehurst. In fact, he made an all-state team in Georgia in both football and soccer. He also worked with the Clemson football team each of the previous two preseason practices before rejoining the soccer team exclusively. He then joined the football team in the spring. Buchholz was a star of Trevor Adair s soccer club during the last four seasons from his midfield position. He was the leading returning scorer from last year s team that ranked #9 in the nation and reached the Final 16 of the NCAA Tournament. Buchholz had five goals on Clemson s Final Four team of He added three goals and three assists in The Labor Day contest against #19 Florida State was the conclusion of a busy first weekend of competition for Buchholz. On Friday evening, he played at Riggs Field in soccer against rival South Carolina. On Sunday, he had another soccer match, and then on Monday night, he faced #19 Florida State on ESPN on the gridiron. That was two games against top rivals in front of capacity crowds in two different sports. The tradition of playing both sports at the same time actually dates to 1978, when Obed Ariri played both football and soccer. Ariri came to Clemson in the fall of 1976 as a scholarship soccer player from Nigeria. He then joined the football team during the fall of 1977 and played only football that season. He only played football during the regular season of 1978, then he played in college soccer s Final Four in Tampa, FL in the fall of Therefore, he played just two soccer matches that fall. Then in 1979, he decided to play both sports. And, he did so with success. He netted 17 goals for the soccer team in 1979 and made 16 field goals for the football team that same fall. On one weekend, he kicked three field goals in a football game against South Carolina, then he scored the only goal in a soccer win in the NCAA Tournament the next day against the Gamecocks. He then solely played football in 1980 and was an All-American, leading the nation in field goals (23). Donald Igwebuike came to Clemson on a soccer scholarship in 1980 and played both sports in 1981 and It was Ariri who convinced him to play both sports, because they were both on campus in Igwebuike kicked three field goals in Clemson s National Championship clinching victory over Nebraska. Igwebuike played on two top-10 teams that fall, as the soccer team finished #8 in addition to the football team s #1 final ranking in the fall of Igwebuike then only played football in 1983 and He was an AP Third-Team All-American on the gridiron in 1984 as well. Both Ariri and Igwebuike went on to play in the NFL. In fact, both started their respective careers with the Buccaneers. Buchholz had quite a football season, and it culminated with a game-winning 35-yard field goal at South Carolina on the last play of the game, giving Clemson a thrilling victory. It was the first game-winning field goal on the last play of the game for the Tigers since David Treadwell kicked a 46-yarder to down Georgia in Buchholz led the ACC in scoring with 114 points, a total that established a school record as well. Those were his 22nd and 23rd touchdown passes of the year (both to Aaron Kelly), a new school record. The previous single-season record for touchdown passes was 21, by Charlie Whitehurst in 2003 and Woodrow Dantzler in Harper threw 27 touchdown passes with just six interceptions in 2007, big contributors to his pass efficiency rating of 141.0, best in the ACC. Harper has thrown 29 touchdown passes in his career, already fourth-best in Clemson history. The junior, who did not become a starter until the 2007 season, already has more career touchdown passes than former Clemson greats Steve Fuller, Bobby Gage, Homer Jordan, and Harvey White.
