8 Division I Finals Preview Arizona Avenue Battle: Hamilton vs. Chandler By Jose E. Garcia aia365.com The city of Chandler might have to rename Arizona Avenue to Championship Drive if the Chandler Wolves and Hamilton Huskies start meeting annually for the Division I football championship title. Hamilton and Chandler are on Arizona Avenue and are about a 10 minute drive from each other. That's the same street the two football teams will take Friday to start their Nov. 28 trek to University of Phoenix Stadium, the site of the D-I 7 p.m. title game. Husky Way and Belles Blvd. should already exist in Chandler. Hamilton is in the title game for the seventh year in a row and for the 11th time in the past 13 years, achievements that no other big school has ever accomplished in Arizona. Hamilton coach Steve Belles is a win away from establishing a new state record with seven big school titles. "We are looking forward to the challenge," said Belles about the Nov. 28 title game. But even Belles will tell you that Chandler is the favorite to win the title this year. A couple of publications, including the Sollenberger Prep Football Report, ranked Chandler No. 1 in the preseason. Chandler lived up to the hype and then some when it walloped Hamilton in the regular season, snapping Hamilton's 64-game win streak at home. It was the worst defeat in Hamilton's school history. History used to be on Hamilton's side (It won its first 17 meetings against Chandler.) for a long time. Chandler s Justin Jan and his team want to finish No. 1 (photo by Ray Chen/maxpreps.com). But Chandler snapped that winless streak with a regular season victory last year against Hamilton. But when it mattered most last year, Hamilton beat Chandler in last year's state semifinals. Now history seems to be on Chandler's side this season. Chandler High opened its doors 100 years ago, and its football program started in "To have the opportunity to play at the University of Phoenix Stadium against the likes of Hamilton, we are so excited and think it's going to be a pretty good ballgame," Chandler coach Shaun Aguano said. Chandler (12-1) has never won and prior to this season appeared in a sanctioned Arizona Interscholastic Association football state championship since the AIA started crowning D-I champs in In charge of Chandler's title hopes and its explosive offense is quarterback Bryce Perkins. The 'P' in Perkins might as well stand for 'poise,' because that's what he along with his team have exhibited this season. Hamilton has advanced to its seventh consecutive title game (photo by Mark Jones/maxpreps.com). Perkins is a dual threat and is completing 74.5 percent of his passes this year. For his career, Perkins has competed 72.2 (351 for 486) of his passes in his career. Hamilton (12-1) reached this year's title game despite starting nine new starters on offense and eight on defense. page 6

14 Division II Finals Preview Liberty vs. Centennial By Andy Morales aia365.com No. 1 Peoria Liberty vs. No. 3 Peoria Centennial On a map, Liberty (12-1) and Centennial (11-2) are separated by only seven miles but, on the field, they are much closer. The two Peoria schools battled it out in late September with Centennial coming in with a 3-2 record and Liberty was undefeated at 5-0. Centennial was on the ropes but they came in knowing they could pull off a minor upset and save their season based on their victory at Liberty the year before. But, in a game featuring plenty of offensive standouts, it was defense that gave the Coyotes the victory they were looking for. Isaac Steele hit Daniel Smith from 26 yards out to put Centennial up with 6:14 left in the game. Liberty had two chances to retake the lead but Centennial forced a punt and a turnover on downs to preserve the victory. Even though Centennial defeated Liberty, the Lions preserved a higher ranking and would ultimately earn the top seed in Division II. They used their status to get by Phoenix St. Mary's, Phoenix Paradise Valley and Vail Cienega by a combined score of 134 to 33. Liberty quarterback Tyler Wyatt has thrown for over 2,000 yards so far in 2014 (photo by Andy Morales). Likewise, Centennial has had little difficulty in the playoffs and outscored their opponents (Lake Havasu, Phoenix Sunnyslope and Scottsdale Chaparral) to earn another shot at Liberty in the state final scheduled for Saturday, Nov. 29 at Sun Devil Stadium. Steele has thrown for over 1,500 yards with 25 TDs and running back Dedrick Young has rushed for almost 1,400. After starting out 0-2, the Coyotes have ripped off 11 wins in a row. If they win one more, they will take home their fourth trophy in seven tries with head coach Richard Taylor guiding them along the way. Unlike Centennial, Liberty and their head coach Danny Filleman will be making their first trip to the final. The Lions will be led by senior QB Tyler Wyatt and his 2,000 plus passing yards and Jake Schuiteboer's and his 1,000 yards of rushing. Each quarterback has a skilled receiving crew to throw to but they will be battling two of the best defenses in the state. At the end of the day, the only outcome that is certain is the fact that Peoria will bring home a trophy. Liberty and Centennial will battle for the Division II title (photo by Duane Matsen/maxpreps.com). page 12

22 Division III Finals Preview Saguaro vs. Williams Field By Andy Morales aia365.com No. 1 Scottsdale Saguaro vs. No. 2 Gilbert Williams Field. The numbers are impressive. Scottsdale Saguaro (13-0) has outscored their opponents 671 to 164 this year or roughly per game. That scoring total includes a 42-7 victory over their Division III state championship opponent Gilbert Williams Field (12-1). Dating back to last year, Jason Mohns is currently coaching a 26-game win streak that includes a state championship over Queen Creek. Simply, the Sabercats are on a roll. A big role. Some say it all begins with quarterback Kare' Lyles. The junior has thrown for 3,150 yards and 38 touchdowns. Quite impressive considering he waiting in the wings while Cal freshman Luke Rubenzer collected over 4,200 yards last year. Will Saguaro s Christian Kirk end his great career in style (photo by Darin Sicurello/maxpreps.com)? Then there's senior running back Christian Kirk with his 1,481 yards and 22 TDs or the other senior back Kamron Johnson and his 1,291 yards and 20 TDs. If you stop those two then you will have to cover junior receiver Byron Murphy and his 1,251 yards and 12 TDs. If you did happen to stop Kirk at the line then look for him to be down field as he also collected 1,125 yards receiving along with 17 more TDs. If you are counting, the total offensive damage is over 6,700 yards. Williams Field came in ranked second for a reason. Like Saguaro, The Black Hawks have an impressive scoring margin over their opponents this year, 586 to 157 or an average game margin of Braedyn Bushman has rushed for over 2,300 yards with 30 touchdowns to his credit. The senior gained 119 yards against Saguaro while averaging six yards a carry. Junior QB Quarterback Weston Murphy led Williams Field to a dominating 45-3 win over No. Tempe in the semifinal round. Murphy has a duo threat down field in seniors Kenney Owens and Rhett Layton. Both have gone over 500 yards for the year. Saguaro will be going for its eighth state championship in nine tries, spanning four levels of play from 5A to their current Division III placement and Williams Field will be going for their first championship having reached the 4A-II finals in Steve Campbell led the Black Hawks to a overtime loss to Phoenix Thunderbird in 2010 and he has the players to get it done this year. It will be No. 1 vs. No. 2. Saguaro Championships 2013 (D-III: Jason Mohns) 2011 (D-III: John Sanders) 2010 (4A-I: John Sanders) 2008 (4A-I: John Sanders) 2007 (4A-I: John Sanders) 2006 (4A-I: Mike Reardon) 1995 (4A: Tim Beck) 1978 (5A Runner-up: Bob Keller) Williams Field is the No. 2 seed, but a huge underdog (photo by Mark Jones/maxpreps.com). page 20

28 Division IV Finals Preview River Valley, Snowflake Vie for FB Championship By Les Willsey aia365.com Even though No. 3 River Valley and No. 4 Snowflake are 315 miles apart, they are familiar with one another. That's because last year River Valley earned its berth to the Division IV title game by stopping Snowflake in a tightly-contested quarterfinal, Their matchup Saturday (Nov. 29) at North Canyon High School is for the 2014 title with unfinished business on both teams dockets. River Valley knocked on the door of its first-ever football championship last season under then-head coach Terry Staggs. Staggs resigned in the offseason and River Valley promoted assistants Paul Duchaineau and Mark Ruckle as co-coaches late in the spring. The Dust Devils haven't missed a beat. Blue Ridge got in the way in the 2013 final and turned the Dust Devils away, Snowflake has reached its first football title game since 1993 (photo by Mark Jones/maxpreps.com). Snowflake has reached the top of the mountain before, but it's been 21 years since the Lobos last title. Beating the team that derailed it last year in this year's final would be about as sweet as it gets for the Lobos. River Valley (12-1) has survived a few close calls this season, including last week's semifinal triumph over previously unbeaten and No. 2 seed Sahuarita. They played a tight game with Estrella Foothills and their only regular-season loss each of the last two years was to D-V power Yuma Catholic. The Dust Devils have more than half of last year's starters back. The two leaders on offense clicked in a big way last week -- prolific running back Brandon Long and quarterback Brady Viles. Viles accounted for four touchdowns -- two rushing and two passing. Long tallied the final two TDs with a rushing and receiving score. Long is a solid game shy of 3,000 yards rushing and receiving for the year. He has 2,302 yards rushing and 523 yards receiving in 13 games with 38 TDs. Viles, who added the quarterback role this season to go along with his duties in the secondary, kicking and punting, has passed for 1,770 yards and 18 TDs. Viles is second on the team in rushing with 662 yards and 10 TDs. Snowflake has seven football titles to its credit, the last one captured in That was the third of three in a row. The last two decades has been difficult for the Lobos to navigate with the likes of nearby Blue Ridge and Show Low and central Arizona's Coolidge dominating the D-III/3A landscape. Coach Ron Tenney is no stranger to championship games, having piloted Mogollon to two titles and three runners-up in D-VI/1A over a decade span ending in Tenney took over at Snowflake in 2010 and the Lobos are an impressive during his tenure. Snowflake (12-1) avenged its only loss last week by besting top-seed Seton Catholic in the semis, The Lobos defense was outstanding in limiting Seton to a season-low 20 points. Snowflake thrives with a relentless rushing attack and a stout, quick defense. They have a pair of 1,000-yard rushers led by Trevor McCray and the ever-emerging Drew Schneider. Schneider has kicked into another gear over the last 10 games taking heat off McCray. Schneider tallied three TDs last week and many of his scoring jaunts have come from beyond the red zone. In Snowflake's loss to River Valley in last year's quarterfinal, the Dust Devils won the battle in the trenches. Snowflake wasn't able to slow Long, who rushed for 212 yards and three TDs. This year quarterback Tyler Claridge has enjoyed enough success to make the passing game viable if need be. Claridge has thrown for 1,671 yards and 18 TDs. His main target is wide out Travis Flake, who has nine TD receptions. page 26

32 Division V Finals Preview Yuma Catholic Seeks Repeat vs. Tempe Prep By Les Willsey aia365.com No. 1 seed Yuma Catholic is an offensive machine that doesn't flinch if it gives up a couple scores a game. No. 2 Tempe Prep plays games close to the vest relying on a ground game that eats clock and a defense more often than not that neutralizes good offenses. That's the gist of these teams as they battle Saturday afternoon (Nov. 29) for the second time this season. Rather than the season opener, it's the final test for both as they compete for the Division V football title at North Canyon High School. Yuma Catholic (13-0) seeks a repeat and a third title in four years. Added incentive is a perfect season that has not happened for Rhett Stallworth and his club since the school opened just after the new milllennium began. Yuma Catholic's offense begins with quarterback Jagan Cleary and all-purpose back Carter Rodriguez. The numbers the duo have produced are staggering. Cleary has completed 67 percent of his passes, good for 3,485 yards. He has a touchdown-to-interception ratio of Cleary passed for 406 yards and six TDs vs. Tempe Prep back on Aug. 29, connecting with five different receivers for scores (Rodriguez was not one of them). Yuma Catholic s Jagan Cleary is aiming for another title (photo by Mark Jones/maxpreps.com). Rodriguez lines up everywhere and is virtually unstoppable. Rodriguez has rushed for 916 yards (averaging 10 yards a carry) and has 47 catches for 862 yards. He's found the end zone 32 times all told. The firepower doesn't stop there. Wide outs Donovan Rooks (51 receptions, 1,198 yards and 16 TDs) and Julian Aitken ( ) demand attention as does tight end and Oregon State commit Matt Pistone ( ). Yuma Catholic averages 52 points a game. Pistone is a force on defense from his end position with linebackers Moises Barcenas and Gabe Nunez racking up their share of tackles and Treyshon Malone and Alex Olsen patrolling the secondary. Tempe Prep (12-1) is in uncharted territory with its first-ever title appearance in football. The Knights have won 12 games in a row since the loss to Yuma Catholic (56-27). Tempe Prep spreads the carries around, relying primarily on Zach Brittain and Jake Hartzler. The postseason has seen Dan Hiser, Jesse Brittain and Isaiah Brittain get some carries as well. Zach Brittain leads the team with 837 yards and Hartzler is next with 560. Isaiah Brittain gets a few of the short-yardage calls particularly deep in the red zone. Tempe Prep doesn't throw much, but can be effective. In their quarterfinal and semifinal victories over Joy Christian and Arizona Lutheran, respectively, quarterback Jesse Brittain has a pair of TD tosses. The main targets are Hiser, Jonah Simmiger, Gabe LeBeau and Zach Brittain. The Knights' defense must come up big to deny Yuma Catholic a repeat. It's a solid unit collectively, led by tackles Nico Zwemke and Cameron Burgin, end Connor Woltz, linebacker Zach Brittain and safety Hiser. Tempe Prep is the first charter school to reach an AIA football title game (photo by James Conrad/maxpreps.com). The game plan for Tempe Prep figures to be its usual ground-and-pound attack, playing keep away from Yuma Catholic. Time-consuming drives must produce points for the Knights. Yuma Catholic is adept at scoring and striking quickly with its array of skill-position talent. In two meetings with Yuma Catholic the last two years, slowing Cleary has been problematic. Cleary has passed for 668 yards and eight TDs vs. the Knights, including last year's regular-season 24-0 victory. page 30

38 50th Anniversary Celebration Westwood s 1964 Title Team to be Honored at D-I Game By Jose E. Garcia aia365.com Coach Edgar "Mutt" Ford had his Westwood High boys seeing purple throughout the 1964 season. Ford, a high school football coaching legend in Arizona, coached Mesa High, a Westwood rival, to a state championship in When Ford arrived at Westwood he often wore a Mesa High purple sweater as a motivational ploy, said Bill Bailey, a running back on Westwood's 1964 team. Ford promised his Westwood players he wouldn't wear the sweater ever again if Westwood won a championship in That was a lot to ask for from a program playing with its first ever senior class and in its second varsity season. But by the end of the 1964 season, Ford's players had their coach seeing a lot of Westwood's orange and royal blue school colors. Westwood punished teams with its ground attack and defense during that memorable season, which ended with a goal line stand near the end of the title game to clinch Westwood's 10-7 win over Camelback in front of more than 18,000. That game was held at Arizona State Sun Devil Stadium. On Nov. 28, Westwood's 1964 team will reunite at University of Phoenix Stadium for its 50th anniversary celebration. Every year, the Arizona Interscholastic Association honors the championship football teams that are celebrating their 50th anniversary by inviting them to the AIA's state football championship games. The 1964 Westwood team will be honored at halftime of the Division I title game at University of Phoenix Stadium. Westwood actually had two goal line stands in that 1964 title game, allowing it to cap a 12-0 season. "Our whole defense needs a pat on the back," Ford told The Arizona Republic after the 1964 championship game. "It played like pros down on the goal line. And it had to. Camelback's the best overall team we've played this year." Besides Ford, Westwood also had some accomplished assistants on the team, including former Westwood head coach Dave Gates, former Gilbert High athletic director Joe Pico and Willie Peete, a former NFL assistant and the father of Sahuaro High great Rodney Peete, a quarterback who played at USC and in the NFL. Westwood won the 1964 title game despite playing with several injured players. Quarterback David Cummard didn't tell his coaches he was playing with a separated shoulder, Bailey said. But two-way All-American tackle Richard Griffin and his defensive crew stymied Camelback's ground attack throughout the game. "We had a bunch of bruisers on that team," said Bailey about the team that brought home Westwood's first football championship. page 36

39 50th Anniversary Celebration McNary s 1964 Title Team to be Honored at D-I Game By Jose E. Garcia aia365.com McNary High's 1964 football team was more than just a football team. It was a family. Their high school, a lumber mill and football united the team. The high school and the McNary Lumber Mill no longer are open, but the bond is as strong as ever with the living members of the 1964 team. Nine former players along with more than 40 family members are expected to attend the Division I football title game (Nov. 28 at University of Phoenix Stadium) for a reunion and halftime celebration to honor the 1964 McNary team. Fifty years ago, McNary won its first state championship. Johnny Cedillo Ernest Madrid "We were a close knit community," said Billy Ward, a weapon on offense on that 1964 team. "We didn't have much, but we had each other and made the best out of it. We didn't complain." The players on the team came from African-American, Latino and Native American communities. They forged a bond on the gridiron and as they worked at the mill, which became a pseudo weight room for the players. They didn't have a weight training program or weight room, but working at the mill kept McNary's players in shape. Their strength and speed was on display in 1964, when McNary averaged 45 points per game and gave up only about eight points per game. They dominated but were challenged when McNary faced Patagonia in the Class 1A 6-man football title game in But with the game tied 13-13, the team's MVP, Bob Perez, returned a kickoff for a touchdown to put McNary up for good midway through the fourth quarter. McNary wound up winning and helped propel the program to title game victories in the following two seasons. Head coach Pete Duca, who was 25 in 1964, and his right hand man, assistant Fred Roybal, guided the 1964 team to a 7-0 record in Duca's third season at the helm. Both coaches are planning to attend the reunion that will celebrate the team's 50th anniversary and honor two former teammates. Eight of the 17 players on the 1964 McNary team joined the military. Two of those players, Ernest Madrid and Johnny Cedillo, were killed in action in the Vietnam War. The 1964 team mourned the loss of their former teammates as if they lost two brothers. "We always took care of each other," Ward said. page 37
