1 2005 PAC-10 FOOTBALL PREVIEW 2004 FINAL PACIFIC-10 CONFERENCE FOOTBALL STANDINGS Conference Games All Games W L Pct. Pts Opp W L Pct. Pts Opp 1. USC California Arizona State Oregon State UCLA Oregon Washington State Stanford Arizona Washington PAC-10 BOWL RESULTS: FedEx Orange Bowl - USC 55, Oklahoma 19 Pacific Life Holiday Bowl - Texas Tech 45, California 31 Insight Bowl - Oregon State 38, Notre Dame 21 Las Vegas Bowl - Wyoming 24, UCLA 21 Wells Fargo Sun Bowl - Arizona State 27, Purdue 23 THE RETURNEES: The Pac-10 has more returning starters in 2005 than in any year in recent memory. A total of 159 starters return (out of 240, including kickers), as nearly two-thirds of last year s starters are back (66.3% to be exact). That is the most returning starters since 156 returned in To give the number some perspective, the average number of starters returning to the Conference over the last 10 years has been 143 per season. Washington has the most returning starters with 20, while California has the fewest with 11, followed by USC with 14. The average Pac-10 team returns 16 starters--8 on offense, 6 on defense and 2 kickers. Here is a breakdown of who has what coming back: Returning Starters Off Def PK/P Total Washington Arizona Stanford Washington State Arizona State Oregon State UCLA Oregon USC California Average THE HEADLINERS: And it s not just quantity coming back in 05, it s quality. A total of 10 players selected first-team All-Pac-10 by the league s coaches in 2004 return, along with 21 more who were named second-team. That compares with a total of 20 first- and second-teamers returning last year. Leading the way, of course, is Heisman Trophy winning QB Matt Leinart of USC, who also is a consensus first-team All-America and two-time Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year. It marks the first time the Pac-10 has had a reigning Heisman Trophy winner performing in the Conference as the previous eight Pac-10 Heisman winners all were seniors when they won the award. Also returning to the Trojan backfield is All-America TB/KR Reggie Bush, who finished fifth in the Heisman voting as a sophomore last year and shared Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year honors with Leinart. Other returnees who garnered national honors last season include 2005 PAC-10 FOOTBALL MEDIA DAY 2005 Pac-10 Football Media Day is scheduled for Thursday, August 4, at 9:30 a.m. at the Sheraton Gateway Hotel at Los Angeles International Airport. Pac- 10 head football coaches and a leading returning player from each team will be in attendance Pac-10 Football Preview 1

2 2005 PAC-10 FOOTBALL PREVIEW second-team All-America picks ILB Spencer Havner of UCLA, C Marvin Philip of California and TE Zach Miller of Arizona State, the Pac-10 Freshman of the Year. SE Mike Hass of Oregon State was a third-team All-America pick. Other first-team All-Pac-10 selections returning include O-linemen Ryan O Callaghan of California and Grayling Love of Arizona State, PK Justin Medlock of UCLA, P Tom Malone of USC, KR T.J. Rushing of Stanford and special teamer Michael Okwo of Stanford. As noted, an additional 21 second-team All-Conference selections also are back. A slew of 2004 Pac-10 statistical leaders are back as well. Leinart led the league in pass efficiency (156.5) and TD passes (33), Hass topped the Conference in both receptions (86) and receiving yards (1379), Bush led in all-purpose yards (179.2 per game) and punt returns (15.7), Rushing led in kickoff returns (28.4). Malone led the Conference in punting (43.8), and fellow Trojans TB LenDale White led in touchdowns scored (17) and SE Dwayne Jarrett led in TD receptions (13). Defensively, Havner led the league in tackles ( per game) and Washington DT Manase Hopoi was the leader in tackles for loss (22). BOWL PARTNERS: The Rose Bowl plays host to the BCS National Championship Game this season, so the Pac-10 champ will need to finish first or second in the BCS poll to make it to Pasadena. Failing that, the Pac-10 champion will play in the Tostitos Fiesta Bowl. The rest of the Pac-10 bowl lineup looks like this: Pacific Life Holiday Bowl, Vitalis Sun Bowl, Insight Bowl, Pioneer PureVision Las Vegas Bowl, Emerald Bowl and Silicon Valley Bowl. THE MISSES: The Pac-10 scheduling format calls for eight Conference games- -four home and four away--which means each institution misses one other league foe. Following are the Pac-10 misses for 2005: Pac-10 Football Preview Arizona-Washington State Arizona State-California Oregon-UCLA Oregon State-USC Stanford-Washington TROJANS TRY FOR THREE-PEAT: Winner of the last two National Championships, USC will be looking to become the first team in modern football history to win three in a row. The Trojans are on quite a tear with three straight BCS bowl wins, a current winning streak of 22 games overall (and 33 wins in their last 34 games) and 15 straight Conference victories. And while USC s dismantling of previously undefeated Oklahoma in last season s National Championship Game at the FedEx Orange Bowl is still fresh in the mind, it should be noted that four of the Trojans Conference victories last year came by eight or fewer points. Included were Conference wins by 3, 5, 6 and 8 points, as SC experienced numerous close calls in the Pac-10. NEW COACHES: One new head coach and one returning head coach will grace Pac-10 sidelines this year. Walt Harris takes over at Stanford after a very successful run as head coach at Pittsburgh, where he led the Panthers to six bowl appearances in eight years. It s a homecoming for Harris, who is from the Bay Area and attended Pacific. He began his college coaching career in 1971 and has 31 years of college coaching and three years in the NFL under his belt.... The other new coach in the Pac-10 is not really new as Tyrone Willingham returns to the West Coast to take over the reins at Washington. Willingham had a successful sevenyear run as head coach at Stanford from , which included leading the Cardinal to the Rose Bowl following the 1999 season. Willingham has been head coach at Notre Dame the last three years. PAC-10 NOTES: Pac-10 teams compiled a solid (.639) mark against outside opponents in 2004, including 3-2 in post-season bowl games.... And the fans must like what they are seeing as the Pac-10 averaged a record 55,684 fans per game, up more than 4,000 per game from Leading the way was National Champion USC, which became the first Pac-10 team to average more than 80,000 per game with a Conference record 85,229 per contest.... Arizona s defense recovered a league-high 19 fumbles last season.... Wildcats also were the least penalized team in the Pac-10, being flagged just 56 times for an average of 42.9 yards per

3 2005 PAC-10 FOOTBALL PREVIEW game.... Another category Arizona led the Pac-10 in 2004 was fewest QB sacks allowed. Cats gave up just 22 sacks in 11 games despite having a freshman starting at QB much of the year.... Arizona State s opener against Temple will be Dirk Koetter s 50th game as head coach of the Sun Devils.... ASU s first Conference home game is against USC, which is trying to become the first team to win three straight National Championships. The last team to win back-to-back No. 1 status was Nebraska, which saw its quest for a third straight end early with a 19-0 loss at Arizona State in their opener in Tempe in Sun Devil WR Derek Hagan enters the season with a streak of 29 games with a reception, second-longest such current streak in the nation (33, Chris Francies, UTEP).... California finished 2004 at 10-2 and ranked No. 9 in the final polls. It was the Bears highest final ranking since 1991 and only the second time since 1950 Cal finished the season among the top The Golden Bears have posted three consecutive winning seasons for the first time since Pappy Waldorf s Cal teams had six straight winning seasons from Cal returns 11 starters, the fewest in the Pac-10. Only three starters return on the defense, although that s a little misleading as three additional players who are not officially returning starters have significant starting experience.... Somewhat overshadowed by some of the big name running backs in the Pac-10 last year, Oregon TB Terrence Whitehead is the leading returning rusher in the Conference this season. He ranked second in the league in rushing last year with 1,144 yards, averaging 5.7 yards per carry and 104 yards per game.... Oregon and Arizona are the only Pac-10 teams that return their secondaries intact this season. The Ducks hope that continues a trend that saw them jump from seventh to fourth in the Pac-10 in pass defense last year.... Oregon State opens a new east grandstand at Reser Stadium this year. It has upped the stadium capacity from 35,000-plus to 43,000. In addition, a new FieldTurf playing surface will be installed.... The Beavers opener will mark the first time since 1998 that someone other than Jonathan Smith or Derek Anderson will start at quarterback.... In pass-happy Pac-10, Oregon State was the only team to hold opponents under 50% passing last season (43.9%).... Stanford has 10 starters returning on offense, most on that side of the ball in the Pac Stanford opened spring practice with no depth chart, replacing it with alphabetical listings at each position. It was new coach Walt Harris not-so-subtle way of saying all positions are open.... Stanford s T.J. Rushing was voted the All-Pac-10 kick returner last year after leading the league with a 28.4-yard average on kickoff returns. He also had the only kickoff return of a touchdown among Pac-10 players last season when he took one 99 yards for a score against BYU.... With 1,000-yard rusher TB Maurice Drew leading the way, UCLA s rushing game ranked second in the Pac-10 last year at yards per game, an increase of 93 yards per game over the previous season.... The Bruins joined USC and Cal as the only Pac-10 teams to average 30 or more points per game last year.... Only two of UCLA s games are outside the State of California this season.... USC enters the season with a 22-game winning streak, which ties Washington ( ) for the second-longest winning streak in Conference history. The record is 25 straight by USC from USC also has an active string of 15 straight Pac-10 wins. The record for consecutive Conference victories is 22 by California ( ).... Last year, USC became the 11th team to win or share a national championship in consecutive seasons. The Trojans are gunning to become the first team to win three straight national titles in modern college football history.... Washington returns 20 starters, most in the Pac-10. Included are nine on offense, nine on defense and both kickers....the Huskies return a large contingent of Pac-10 defensive stat leaders from last season. The linebacking trio of Joe Lobendahn, Evan Benjamin and Scott White ranked No. 3, 4 and 6, respectively, in tackles, and DT Manase Hopoi led the league in tackles for loss (22).... Odd stat for Washington last year. Opponents went for a first down on fourth down 11 times and never made it. Huskies are the only team in the league not to allow a single fourth-down conversion.... WSU SE Jason Hill emerged as a top deep threat last year. He averaged a league-best 22.4 yards on his 45 receptions, 12 of which went for TDs. The Pac-10 coaches voted him second-team All-Pac-10 as a sophomore.... WSU senior TE Troy Bienemann has started every game since his freshman year, 34 straight and counting. Bienemann also is a two-time Pac-10 All-Academic selection, who topped last year s academic squad with a 3.75 GPA in Communications.... P Kyle Basler unloaded an 87- yard punt in WSU s win at Arizona last year, the second-longest punt in Pac-10 history Pac-10 Football Preview 3

Arizona returns eight starters on offense. Richard Kovalcheck took over as starting quarterback midway through last season and enters this season entrenched in the spot, assuming successful recovery from offseason back surgery. The Cats also bring back RB Mike Bell, one of the league s top running backs after rushing for more than 900 yards in each of the last two seasons. Defense: Seven starters return to the defensive unit. The entire secondary returns intact, led by second-team All-Pac-10 FS Darrell Brooks and freshman All-America CB Antoine Cason. This unit should be a team strength. Reliable P Danny Baugher also returns. The Schedule: The Cats have a tough opener on the road at Utah and the road stays tough all year. Arizona faces California, USC, Oregon State and Arizona State--the top four finishers in the Pac-10 last year--on the road Pac-10 Football Preview 5

Sam Keller looks to be an able replacement. The passing game should still be potent with wideouts like Derek Hagan and Terry Richardson returning, along with stellar tight end Zach Miller. Hagan has been a 1,000-yard receiver in each of the last two seasons and last year pulled in 83 catches for 1,248 yards and 10 TDs on the way to second-team All-Pac-10 honors. Miller stepped into the starting lineup at tight end as a true freshman last year and was selected Pac-10 Freshman of the Year by the league coaches. Four starters return on the offensive line led by All-Conference performer Grayling Love. PK Jesse Ainsworth s 18 field goals led the Pac-10 last year. Defense: Six starters return to the ASU defense, two each to the line, linebacker and secondary. The outside backer duo of Jamar Williams and Dale Robinson is formidable, DE Kyle Caldwell and DT Jordan Hill started last year as sophomores and S Emmanuel Franklin leads the secondary. The departed include QB Aaron Rodgers, All-America TB J.J. Arrington and WR Geoff McArthur. Finding a replacement for Rodgers at QB will be job number one on the offensive side of the ball. Looking to step in at TB for Arrington will be Marshawn Lynch, who had people buzzing last year in rushing for 628 yards and eight TDs, while averaging 8.8 yards per carry in a backup role. The strength of the Cal team should be up front with four starters returning on the offensive line led by firstteam All-Pac-10 performers C Marvin Philip, a second-team All-America choice, and OT Ryan O Callaghan. Defense: California has the fewest returning starters in the Pac-10 due in large part to only three returnees officially back on defense. But that s a bit misleading, as there are three other defenders who have extensive starting experience. The losses on defense are particularly acute in the front seven. NT Brandon Mebane will be counted on to anchor the middle. The secondary should be a strength with CBs Harrison Smith and Daymieon Hughes back, along with ROV Donnie McCleskey. The Schedule: California has a nice home-away pacing to its schedule never going on the road on consecutive weeks. The Bears get conference favorite USC at home Pac-10 Football Preview 9

QB Kellen Clemens returns for his third year as the starter. He completed 59.9% of his passes last year for 2,548 yards and 22 TDs, numbers surpassed only by USC s Heisman winner Matt Leinart among returning starting QBs in the Pac-10. Clemens is joined by the top returning rusher in the league in TB Terrence Whitehead, who ranked second in Pac-10 rushing last year with 1,144 yards (104.0 yards per game). Other seniors returning include second-team All-Pac-10 TE Tim Day and leading receiver WR Demetrius Williams. The question mark for the Ducks on offense is the offensive line, where four starters must be replaced. Defense: Eight starters return on defense with the line looking like a strength of the team. Massive DT Haloti Ngata (6-5, 345) anchors the line and is joined by returnees DE Devan Long and DT Robby Valenzuela to give the Ducks a formidible unit up front. The entire secondary returns intact led by senior CB Aaron Gipson. Whoever steps into Anderson s spot behind center will have no shortage of talented targets. All-Pac-10 SE Mike Hass earned thirdteam All-America honors after leading the league in receptions (86) and receiving yards (1,379). Also back is huge TE Joe Newton (6-7, 254), who ranked third in the Pac-10 with 56 receptions. Three starters return on the offensive line with soph OG Roy Schuening looking like an emerging star. PK Alexis Serna earned Freshman All-America honors after leading the Pac-10 in field goals last year (17-20). Defense: Oregon State s defense ranked just behind National Champion USC in the Pac-10 last year and the Beavers lose four starters from that unit. Included among the missing are Pac-10 Co-Defensive Player of the Year DE Bill Swancutt and three of four starters in what many considered the top secondary in the Conference. However, the cupboard is not bare as seven starters are back, including a senior trio of linebackers led by MLB Trent Bray, second in the Pac-10 in tackles last year with 10.2 stops per game. He is flanked by OLBs Keith Ellison and Chaz Scott. The lone returnee in the secondary is a good one in SS Sabby Piscitelli, who ranked second in the league last year with five interceptions. The Schedule: Oregon State won six of its last seven games in 2004 and would like to keep that momentum rolling this season. The Cardinal started seven sophomores on offense last year, so the hope is that their experience will pay off this season. QBs Trent Edwards and T.C. Ostrander both have starting experience and 6-foot-7 FL Evan Moore is a tough cover. Stanford hopes to get more production out of its running game. T.J. Rushing led the Pac-10 in kickoff returns last season (28.4). Defense: Stanford loses three out of four starters from a secondary that was the strength of the Cardinal defense last year. But four senior starters are back in the front seven to offset the losses in the secondary. OLB Jon Alston is the top returning QB sacker in the league (10) and ILB Kevin Schimmelmann is a proven performer. The line is anchored by senior tackles Babatunde Oshinowo and Julian Jenkins. P Jay Ottovegio was a second-team freshman All-America selection last year. The Schedule: The late-starting Cardinal play just two games in September, but then finish with a rush with nine games in nine weeks. There are not many independents left, but Stanford gets two of them with non-conference games against Notre Dame and Navy Pac-10 Football Preview 15

A major question mark will be the status of two-year starting QB Drew Olson, who is coming off major knee surgery. But the Bruins return some big play performers in tight end Marcedes Lewis and tailback/kick returner Maurice Drew, who comes off a 1,000-yard rushing year. Also back are four offensive linemen with starting experience led by C Mike McCloskey and OG Ed Blanton. All-Pac-10 PK Justin Medlock also returns. Defense: The Bruin defensive group was littered with new players last season, but 2005 finds eight starters returning to what should be an improved unit. Leading the way is the talented ILB duo of Spencer Havner and Justin London. Havner led the Pac-10 in tackles last year with 11.4 stops per game and earned secondteam All-America honors. SS Jarrad Page leads the secondary and DT Kevin Brown anchors a defensive line that returns three starters. The Schedule: UCLA hopes to get off to a fast start with four of its first five games at the Rose Bowl. Included in that stretch is a home date with Oklahoma. Officially, USC has eight starters returning to an offensive unit that averaged 38.2 points per game in But in reality, the Trojans return experienced personnel to every offensive position. The headliners are familiar names, starting with Heisman Trophy winning QB Matt Leinart, who has passed for 6,800-plus yards and 71 TDs as a starter the last two years. Although the Heisman winner, Leinart shared Pac-10 Offensive Player of the Year honors with all-purpose TB Reggie Bush, who finished fifth in the Heisman balloting himself. Throw in 1,000-yard rusher LenDale White, a young and talented group of wide receivers and four returning starters on the offensive line and you can see why many favor USC to capture its third straight National Championship trophy. Defense: While the offense is loaded with experienced returnees, there is some work to do on the defensive unit that was the Pac-10 s best last year. Five starters return, but the Trojans must replace three first-team All-America selections on defense as tackles Shaun Cody and Mike Patterson and linebacker Matt Grootegoed have moved on. Also gone is MLB Lofa Tatupu, a third-team All-America pick and SC s leading tackler in Coach Pete Carroll, who also serves as defensive coordinator, has some pieces in place. SS Darnell Bing and CB Justin Wyatt are the start of a good secondary, Dallas Sartz is a returning veteran at OLB, and DEs Lawrence Jackson and Frostee Rucker return up front. All-Pac-10 punter Tom Malone also is back. The Schedule: USC has proved to be a good road team the last couple of years and the Trojans will need to be in 2005 as SC has three of its first four and five of its first seven on the road. All six of USC s road contests could prove treacherous as the Trojans venture to Hawai i, Oregon, Arizona State, Notre Dame, Washington and California Pac-10 Football Preview 19

The Huskies have the most starters returning of any team in the Pac-10 with 20 of 24 back, including nine each on both offense and defense. However, considering last year s record, it is likely Willingham will have most positions up for grabs. One of his first concerns will be establishing a starting quarterback, as three players shared the position last season. Four starters return on the offensive line and TB Kenny James has shown promise. Defense: The Huskies return nine starters on defense with only the starting cornerbacks not back. The strength of the unit is in the front seven. The incumbent trio of linebackers--olb Evan Benjamin and ILBs Joe Lobendahn and Scott White--all ranked in the top six in the Pac-10 in tackles. DT Manase Hopoi led the league in tackles for loss and earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors and soph DT Jordan White-Frisbee teams with Hopoi to give the Huskies bulk inside. New cornerbacks must be identified. The Schedue:: Washington does not venture out of the city limits until October as the first four games are played in Seattle.
