The Skyhawks had led entering the fourth quarter only to fall behind with 1:10 to play after Tech scored on a 79- yard touchdown pass. But UTM quarterback Derek Carr threw a 46-yard Hail Mary pass that bounced off two TTU players before landing in the arms to Chris Thompson to tie the game. After the Golden Eagles scored to open the extra period UT Martin faced a 4th and 16 before Carr found OVC Newcomer of the Week Jeremy Butler for a touchdown. That play was right before the Skyhawks fumbled the extra point snap, ending the game. Butler finished the game with 13 catches for 142 yards and two touchdowns; over the past four games Butler has caught 35 passes for 438 yards and seven touchdowns. Carr fi nished the game 35-of-52 for 422 yards and four touchdowns; he has 11 touchdown passes and no interceptions over his last two games. While playing at Hale Stadium TSU went undefeated 10 times and won 10 championships, including the 1998 OVC Championship in its final year at Hale Stadium. AWARD WINNERS RETURN Tennessee State University returns several conference award winners from a year ago. Three of those are from the offensive line. Sherman Carter (center), Kadeem Edwards (guard) and Rogers Gaines (tackle) bring second team All- OVC honors from a year ago. LONG HISTORY The Tigers are fielding their 97th varsity football team this season and are playing in the Ohio Valley Conference for the 25th season. The Tigers have won 11 Black College National Championships over the years , 1947, 1954, 1956, 1965, 1966, 1970, 1971, 1973, 1979, 1982, along with two OVC titles. NFL PRODUCTS Tennessee State has a long history of producing NFL talent, including Pro Football Hall of Famer Richard Dent (Chicago Bears) and All-Pro Ed Too Tall Jones (Dallas Cowboys). More recent NFL players include Randy Fuller - who played in Super Bowl XXX with Pittsburgh and Super Bowl XXXII with Atlanta - and Anthony Pleasant, who played with New England in both Super Bowl XXXV and XXXVII. In 2008, Dominique Rodgers- Cromartie was taken by Arizona with the 16th pick of the first round and went on to be a starter at cornerback in Super Bowl XLIII as well as Pro Bowl Selection. SGT. YORK TROPHY Weekly Nuggets Tennessee State regained control of the Sgt. York Trophy in 2011, sharing it with Tennessee Tech. In July 2007, the Nashville Sports Council and the Ohio Valley Conference announced the creation of the Sergeant York Trophy which goes to the winner of the quadrangular season football series between the four Ohio Valley Conference schools located in the state of Tennessee Austin Peay, UT Martin, Tennessee State and Tennessee Tech. The award is only the second traveling trophy that involves more than two teams in college sports; the other is the Commander in Chief s Trophy which has been contested between Air Force, Army and Navy annually since After the completion of the football season, the Sergeant York Trophy is awarded to the institution with the best head-to-head record in the match-ups with their fellow Tennessee schools. In the event of a tie, the award is shared; however, the previous winner will retain the trophy if they are part of the tie. If the tie is between two other institutions, the trophy will go to the institution that has gone the most seasons without winning the trophy. OVC PLAYOFF SUCCESS Last season the OVC placed two teams in the FCS playoffs as Tennessee Tech earned the automatic bid and Eastern Kentucky received an at-large bid. It marked the fourth time in the last six years the OVC had placed multiple teams in the playoffs; overall the OVC has placed multiple teams in the playoffs 18 total times. Both EKU and TTU hosted home playoff games, marking the second-straight year an OVC team had served as a playoff host and the first time since 1991 that two teams had served as hosts in the same season. WILSON NAMED SCHOLAR Tennessee State University football senior Devin Wilson was honored in March as a Collegiate Scholar-Athlete winner by the National Football Foundation of Middle Tennessee earlier this month. Wilson, a wide receiver for the Big Blue, was just one of seven collegiate recipients at the 46th annual banquet. The Nashville native and Pope John Paul II product snagged a team-best 48 catches for 586 yards and two touchdowns in 11 games last season. O-LINE ALL-AMERICANS A pair of Tennessee State University offensive linemen racked up preseason FCS All-American honors. Phil Steele Magazine named center Sherman Carter and guard Rogers Gaines to All-American accolades on Wednesday. In the preseason prognostication, Gaines earned second team All-American recognition and Carter earned fourth team All- American status. GAINES ON SENIOR BOWL WATCH LIST The preseason honors keep rolling in for Tennessee State senior offensive lineman Rogers Gaines as he has been named to the first ever Senior Bowl watch list Gaines has played in 19 games the past two seasons. Last year, Gaines graded out 86 to 90 percent each game and finished with six pancakes per contest. He was also selected as a preseason second team All-American by Phil Steele Magazine as well as being named to the 2011 second team All-OVC. The Goodlettsville native is the only offensive lineman from the Ohio Valley Conference selected and one of only four players from the OVC overall. A total of 44 offensive lineman from around the nation were among the 309 players named to the list.

5 Tennessee State Tigers Football Game Notes -- 5 TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Sept. 9 - Co-Offensive Player of the Week RB - Trabis Ward Ward carried the ball 22 times for 114 yards and a career-best three touchdowns as Tennessee State topped rival Jackson State in the 23rd Annual Southern Heritage Classic played at the Liberty Bowl in Memphis. The junior became just the sixth TSU player to rush for three or more touchdowns in a game and first since the 2008 season (Javarris Williams). All of Ward s touchdowns came in the second quarter, the last coming on a 47-yard scamper to put the Tigers up 21-6 heading into halftime. For his efforts Ward was named Southern Heritage Classic MVP. TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Sept Offensive Player of the Week QB - Michael German Quarterback Michael German completed 27-of-36 passes for a career-high 318 yards and three touchdowns in the Tigers victory over Austin Peay on Saturday. The 27 completions was also a career-high for the sophomore, while the three touchdown passes equaled his career-best set last season against UT Martin. The last TSU QB to throw for more than 318 yards was Riley Walker, who threw for 381 yards at Jacksonville State during the 2004 season. German completed a 27-yard pass for a touchdown to Travis James in the second quarter, a four-yard touchdown pass to Johntae Gleaves to begin the fourth quarter and ended the game with a 51-yard strike to A.C. Leonard with 2:12 to play to account for the final margin. The game was the first played at Hale Stadium on the TSU campus since the 1998 season. German s performance helped TSU to a 3-0 start to the season for the first time since Before Trabis Ward was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week last week, the last TSU player to win the award was QB Antonio Heffner on November 9, TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Oct. 7 - Defensive Player of the Week LB - Nick Thrasher Thrasher had a game-high 12 tackles, including nine solo stops, and a key sack as No. 24 TSU improved to 6-0 on the season with a come-from-behind victory over No. 16 Eastern Kentucky on Saturday afternoon. With the Tigers trailing by four points late in the fourth quarter, Thrasher sacked EKU quarterback T.J. Pryor on a 3rd and 6 at the TSU 29-yard line and the Colonels were unable to convert on fourth down, setting up TSU for the game-winning drive, which covered 68 yards on 13 plays. The Morrow, Ga., native leads the team with 55 tackles, including six-and-a-half tackles for loss. The Tigers defense is one of only two FCS teams to have not given up more than 20 points in a game this season. Thrasher is the first Tiger to be named defensive player of the week since Antonio Harper won the honor on November 6, TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Oct Co-Defensive Player of the Week DB - Steven Godbolt Godbolt had four tackles (three solo) and returned an interception 62 yards to setup a key touchdown early in the fourth quarter. With the Tigers holding onto a lead and the Redhawks driving late in the third quarter, Godbolt picked off Scott Lathrop and returned the ball 62 yards to the Southeast Missouri 26-yard line. Five plays later Ward scored from four yards out to give TSU a advantage. Overall it marked the fourth interception of the season for the sophomore, who is ranked seventh nationally with 0.57 interceptions/ game, and marked just the second time all season that Lathrop had been picked off. This is the first OVC defensive player of the week award for Godbolt, who shares the honor with fellow DB Thad Williams from UT Martin. TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Oct. 7 - Co-Offensive Player of the Week RB - Trabis Ward Ward carried the ball 43 times for 267 yards (6.2 ypc) and four touchdowns as Tennessee State improved to 7-0 on the season, making the Tigers one of just four undefeated teams at the FCS level, with a victory at Southeast Missouri. The 267 yards and four touchdowns were both the second-highest single-game totals in Tennessee State history. Among all FCS performances this season, the 43 carries were the most, the four rushing touchdowns were tied for the most and the 267 yards were the fourth most this season. Ward scored on a sevenyard run in the second quarter and then added three fourth quarter scores, running it in from four yards out, one yard out and capping the game with a 30-yard touchdown scamper with 1:26 to play. Ward currently ranks first nationally in carries (186) second in scoring (11.14 points/game), sixth in rushing ( yards/game) and 16th in all-purpose yards (142.29/game). It s is the second time that Ward has won Co- Offensive player of the week honors. He shared the award on September 10 for his three touchdown performance vs. Jackson State. He is also the first TSU player to win offensive player of the week more than once in a season since Antonio Heffner in Ward shares the honor with quarterback Derek Carr from UT Martin. TSU - OVC 2012 Weekly Honors Oct Special Teams Player of the Week K/P - Jamin Godfrey Godfrey was a perfect 5-of-5 in lifting the 21stranked Tennessee State Tigers to a win over Tennessee Tech on Saturday. The five field goals made and attempted for Godfrey is a school record. His previous career-high was three field goals last season at Eastern Kentucky on October 22. His fifth field goal on the day broke the school record of J.J. Flournoy who went 4-for-4 at Austin Peay on Oct. 6, Godfrey connected from 37 and 32 yards in the first quarter, 27 and 41 yards in the second quarter and added a 22-yard field goal in the third quarter. With TSU trailing and Godfrey s 15 points being the only points the team had scored all day, the Tigers scored a touchdown with no time remaining to tie the game and Godfrey made the extra point attempt to lift TSU to the victory. The five made field goals are tied for the most made field goals in a FCS game this season with Murray State s Jordan Benton. Godfrey also punted four times, with a long of 44 and one downed inside the 20-yard line. Godfrey currently ranks sixth nationally in field goals made/ game (1.56).

6 6 -- Tennessee State Tigers Football Game Notes v Last Time Out: Murray State 49, Tennessee State unanswered points to end the game by Murray State proved to be the difference as the Racers defeated Tennessee State Saturday afternoon at Roy Stewart Stadium. With TSU (8-2, 4-2 OVC) leading late in the third quarter, the Racers (4-5, 3-3 OVC) scored on three straight possessions over the next five minutes, 54 seconds. The Racers first possession of the game resulted in an interception as receiver Josh Brown was picked off by Ronn Vinson in the end zone from six yards out. The Tigers took advantage driving 80 yards in 12 plays, ending with a two-yard touchdown run by Trabis Ward for the 7-0 lead with 6:57 left in the first quarter. Ward had 37 carries for 111 yards and a touchdown. He has run for over 110 yards in eight of the 10 games this season. MSU spent little time answering as quarterback Casey Brockman connected with Walter Powell for a 13-yard score to tie the game at seven less than a minute later. The Racers would get a 36-yard field goal from Benton on the opening drive of the second half to increase its lead to six. The Tigers would return the favor with a one-yard QB sneak from German to give TSU the edge with 9:58 remaining in the third quarter. A Garlilngton 66-yard kickoff return down to the MSU 28 gave the Tigers a short field. The TSU defense forced its first three-and-out of the game as Daniel Fitzpatrick sacked Brockman for a loss of seven on third-and-six to force the second Racer punt of the game. Fitzpatrick recorded a game-high 10 tackles. The punt by Steven Mix was misplayed by Garlington forcing the Tigers to start the drive inside its own one-yard line. After a pair of Ward rushes for no gain, German rolled to his left on third down and found A.C. Leonard near the sideline for a 52-yard gain. Six plays later, German threw his second TD of the contest, a 21-yard strike in the middle of the field to Joe Bowens to put TSU up with 3:44 left in the third. Leonard set a career-high in yards for the second week in a row as he had seven receptions for 115 yards. The sophomore tight end had 102 yards last week vs. Tennessee Tech. The Racer offense would score on its next two possessions to retake the lead Berry had his second TD of the day from five yards out with 27 seconds on the third quarter clock. Brockman started the fourth with a one-yard TD run within the first minute. Brockman finished 27-of-38 for 271 yards with two touchdowns through the air and one on the ground. He is now the all-time Murray State and OVC leader in total offense with 9,962 yards. Powell led all receivers with eight catches for 117 yards and a touchdown. It s only the second time all season that Powell has been held under nine catches and the first time in the last five games that he has not had 142 yards or more. TSU would go three-and-out on offense to give the ball right back to the Racers, who drove inside the TSU 15 and settled for a 25-yard field goal from Jordan Benton to take the lead for the first time, Another TSU three-and-out gave Murray State a chance to extend its lead, but a pass breakup by Bernell Brooks turned the Racers over on downs on a fourth-and-6 at the TSU 32. The ensuing Tennessee State drive took up nine minutes, 33 seconds of the second quarter, resulting in a six-yard touchdown pass from Michael German to Weldon Garlington in the back, right corner of the end zone on third-and-goal. TSU converted three third downs on the 18 play drive. Ward converted each third down and ran the ball 10 times on the drive. German kept the drive going with a quarterback sneak on a fourth-and-one at the MSU 14. On the next play, German rushed for 12 yards down to the MSU two yard line. Murray State came back with another quick scoring drive as Jaamal Berry ran for a 35-yard touchdown on a third-and-three to give the lead back to MSU at the half. The Tennessee State offense was on the move when a German pass was dropped by Devin Wilson and intercepted by Julian Whitehead at the Racers 33. A 47-yard run by Berry gave MSU the ball at the TSU 5. Ja-Von Trotter caught a Brockman pass on the next play to give the Racers the advantage with 9:33 remaining. The final MSU points came on another Berry run, this one from one yard out with 3:05 on the clock. The junior transfer from Ohio State had 163 yards on 16 carries and three touchdowns. GAME NOTES: Trabis Ward moved past Javarris Williams (2006) for the third most rushing yards in a season for a TSU running back. His 37 carries is the second most in his career and the third time this season he has had 34 or more carries. He leads the FCS with 285 carries on the season... The nine minute, 30 second scoring drive by TSU in the second quarter is the longest since a 9:33 drive at Southeast Missouri State on Oct. 25, The 99-yard drive in the third quarter is also the longest for TSU since the same 9:33 drive at SEMO... TSU had the ball for 40 minutes, 25 seconds... The Tigers had 411 yards on 86 plays. The last time that TSU ran more than 86 plays in a game was Sept. 15, 2007 at Austin Peay in a double overtime victory... At the start of the game, TSU had outscored its opponents in the fourth quarter. The Racers outscored the Tigers 22-0 in the fourth quarter Saturday... Murray State leads the all-time series and have won the last five meetings dating back to 2008, including four in a row at Roy Stewart Stadium.

It marks the sixth overall title for the Panthers (2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2009, 2012) and 14th overall Division I playoff appearance (1982, 1983, 1986, 1989, 1995, 1996, 2000, 2001, 2002, 2005, 2006, 2007, 2009, 2012). The 14 playoff appearances are second-most among current OVC teams and eighth-most in FCS history. EIU head coach Dino Babers became just the fourth coach in OVC history to win the OVC Championships in his first season as a collegiate head coach (joining APSU s Boots Donnelly in 1977, UTM s Jason Simpson in 2006 and EKU s Dean Hood in 2008). Eastern Kentucky, Tennessee State and UT Martin will each be looking to secure an at-large berth into the playoffs when the field is announced next Sunday (Nov. 18); the OVC has had multiple teams in the playoffs each of the last two years and four of the last six seasons. EIU cracked this week s national polls at No. 24 in the Sports Network poll and No. 25 in the FCS Coaches poll; it marks the first time they have been ranked since Sept. 6, Eastern Kentucky (22nd) and Tennessee State (23rd) are also ranked in the Sports Network poll, giving the OVC three ranked teams for the secondstraight week; EKU is also ranked 17th in the FCS Coaches poll. EIU wide receiver Erik Lora, who continues to lead all FCS players in receiving yards and receptions, now has 115 receptions on the season (5th most in FCS history) and is just eight catches away from tying the all-time NCAA record (123 by Elon s * Indicates OVC Contest ALL TIMES CENTRAL THIS WEEK S OVC HIGHLIGHTS AND STORYLINES Terrell Hudgins in 2009); Lora set the OVC record for receiving yards in a season (1,479) on Saturday, passing the record formerly held by SEMO s Willie Ponder. Murray State QB Casey Brockman set the OVC single season records for passing yards (3,540) and completions (339) on Saturday and also became the fi rst OVC player to eclipse 10,000 yards of total offense in a career (10,253). Brockman, who already owns the OVC career completions record, needs 28 attempts to set the career passing attempts mark. The Sgt. York Trophy, contested among the four football-playing schools from Tennessee, comes down to two games this week with Austin Peay (0-2 in the series) hosting Tennessee Tech (1-1) and Tennessee State (2-0) playing at UT Martin (1-1).Tennessee State is guaranteed a share of the trophy and because it is the defending champion it will retain the actual trophy; With wins UT Martin and Tennessee Tech can each gain a share of the championship but cannot win the trophy. The other OVC game on the slate on Saturday is Southeast Missouri at Murray State...In non-conference action Jacksonville State is at nationally-ranked (No. 7) FBS foe Florida while Eastern Illinois is at nationally-ranked FCS foe (No. 10) Central Arkansas, who has already locked up the Southland Conference Championship and auto-berth to the playoffs.
