10 Players oklahoma state cowgirl soccer SEASON PREVIEW Coming off a disappointing 2012 season, the Oklahoma State Cowgirls are motivated to bounce back in a big way in OSU head coach Colin Carmichael was by no means satisfied with last season s campaign, but he fully expects it to be the exception for a program he has helped build into one of the best in the region and a rising star nationally, one that has been to the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship six of the last seven years and been crowned Big 12 Conference champions four times since Last year, we didn t meet our goals we hoped and expected to do better, said Carmichael, who enters his ninth season as OSU s head coach and 18th overall with the program in But the positive is, we started a number of freshmen and those players returning have so much experience you hope that translates into being better prepared mentally and physically for what it entails to play at this level. We re hopeful, and we really expect some of those players to make a big jump from their freshman to sophomore year. And if last season s 11-win season was a rebuilding year, then the OSU future is bright. The Cowgirls were a youthful bunch a year ago, often starting as many as six freshmen, and that bodes well for the 13 group as eight starters return. The bad news, however, is that the three starters who don t return include a three-time All-American AD Franch, who recorded a record 38 career shutouts and a pair of All-Big 12 performers Carson Michalowski (92 career starts) and Megan Marchesano (28 career goals). But those loses certainly don t alter the focus for Carmichael. Every season we go into now wanting to compete for a Big 12 championship, and if you do that, you re on the radar for the NCAA tournament, Carmichael said. Those are our goals moving forward every year and looking further ahead than that is just a little naïve because there s just so many factors out there that can affect your season. Allie Stephenson Kristen Kelley With just one scholarship senior and three juniors who have played more than 10 games on the roster, the Cowgirls will again be young this season. A strong sophomore class, led by the likes of Kelsey Bass, Madison Mercado, Allie Stephenson and Delaney Kiely, gained valuable experience last season and is expected to carry a bigger load in year two. Last year we had so many fresh-faced young players that had no idea what to expect; this year we shouldn t have so many of them at key positions, Carmichael said. All those players played enough as freshmen to where they re almost like juniors the amount of minutes they got in their first season might usually be what you get in your first two years here. That should help them. It doesn t guarantee that they play better, but it should help them going forward. Adding to the youth is an incoming class that is arguably the most talented OSU has ever brought in. Carmichael calls Krissi Killion as good as any freshman forward in the country and compares defender Natalie Calhoun s athleticism to that of former Cowgirl All-American Melinda Mercado. Carmichael believes several starters could emerge from the rookie bunch. You don t want to get too carried away with the young players, but at the same time, they re very talented, Carmichael said. The Cowgirls won t be void of veteran leadership, however, and senior midfielder Kristen Kelley leads the way. A three-year starter, Kelley has nine career goals, six of those game winners, to go along with five assists, and Carmichael doesn t understate her value to the squad. We as coaches really knew how valuable Kristen was, and last year when she got injured I don t think it s a coincidence that our results started to suffer, Carmichael said. She s that engine, that driving force in our midfield that allows other players to be better. The junior class includes a duo in Miriam Rhinehart and Hayley McKinney who have played in big games for championship teams, and in Rhinehart, the Cowgirls have a player who presents a dual threat as either 8 Cowgirl FC 13

11 Players oklahoma state cowgirl soccer SEASON PREVIEW an attacking scorer or a defender on the back line. (Rhinehart) will be on the field, there s no question about that, Carmichael said. Playing her up front in the spring opened our eyes a little bit that she could be very dangerous in the attack. A lot of it is just going to be determined on need. We ll probably train her 70 percent as a defender and 30 percent as a forward knowing that if we need some added punch up front or somebody gets hurt, she could play. Having that option is great. The biggest void OSU will have to fill is in goal, where Franch roamed for each of the last four years and blossomed into one of the nation s best keepers at any level. Junior Rosa Medina filled in admirably in a handful of games that Franch missed the last two seasons, but she ll have to win the job over newcomers Ashton Hierholzer and Michela Ongaro. (Medina) will get first dibs with her experience, but we ve got two hungry freshmen coming in who want to play, Carmichael said. At the very least, that should push Rosa to play at a higher level. Whoever plays in goal for us, replacing the best keeper in OSU history and one of the best ever in college soccer, it s gonna be a tough order. But that s the challenge laid out, and hopefully that inspires them to play better. This year s Cowgirls will also be tested by a daunting schedule that includes NCAA runner-up Penn State and fellow College Cup participant Florida State, as well as Florida, Washington State, Gonzaga and North Texas not to mention the always-tough Big 12 slate. Last year s schedule, in hindsight, wasn t difficult enough, Carmichael said. We went 10-2 in our non-conference games, yet our RPI was in the 60s at the end of the year and that s not good enough. And I don t think that schedule prepared us properly for the Big 12 weekends. Looking at this year, on paper, it s the most difficult non-conference schedule we ve put together. The challenge is making sure you win enough games to have enough confidence going into the Big 12 and also have a good RPI. The positives are, if you do navigate that non-conference schedule well, you re more than prepared for the conference schedule coming up. You never know at the end of the season how it all plays out. It s a challenging schedule, but hopefully it gets you going in the right direction. 34 Coaches oklahoma state cowgirl soccer 2013 COACHING STAFF Colin Carmichael Head Coach 18th Season At OSU South Alabama, 93 If you are looking for a blueprint of how to build a collegiate soccer program into a national contender, Oklahoma State head coach Colin Carmichael would be a good place to start. Carmichael has been at OSU since the inception of the women s soccer program in the fall of 1996, and he continues to help lead Cowgirl soccer to new heights and a spot among the nation s elite. OSU is in the midst of the most successful stretch of seasons in program history, and as the program enters its 18th season, the Cowgirls are looking to build on the greatest season in its history in Carmichael s ninth year at the helm. Carmichael, who served as OSU s co-head coach with Karen Hancock during the 2005 and 2006 seasons, is during his eight-year tenure as the Cowgirls head coach, compiling a winning percentage of.750. He led the Cowgirls to six consecutive appearances in the NCAA Women s Soccer Championship from , and after advancing to the second round four-straight years, the Cowgirls made back-to-back trips to the Elite Eight in 2010 and The Cowgirls have also been a dominant force in the Big 12 Conference under Carmichael as they captured four consecutive league titles from OSU won the regular season title in 2008, captured the Big 12 Soccer Championship title in 2009 and 2010 and claimed another regular season championship in The 2011 campaign ranks as the best in program history as OSU won a school record 22 games, highlighted by a record 21-game unbeaten streak. After falling in the title game of the conference tourney, the Cowgirls reeled off three-straight wins in the NCAA Championship before falling to top-ranked and eventual national champion Stanford. Carmichael earned Big 12 Coach of the Year honors for the fourth time in 2011, and the Cowgirls saw a program-record seven players earn All-Big 12 status, including Melinda Mercado being named the league s Defensive Player of the Year for the secondstraight year. Mercado was part of a senior class that went (.808) during their careers, placing them as the fourth-winningest senior class in the NCAA in 2011, and she was also one of two Cowgirls to earn All-American honors, along with AD Franch. The year culminated with OSU finishing fifth in the final national rankings for the second-straight year. The 2010 season saw OSU set a school record for wins as they finished , which also earned the Cowgirls their highest-ever final ranking in the national polls at No. 5 in the NSCAA poll. In a year that saw OSU tie a school record with a 13-game unbeaten streak and lead the Big 12 in goals and goals against average, Carmichael was named the 2010 Big 12 Conference Co-Coach of the Year and the NSCAA/Mondo Central Region Coach of the Year. 40 review oklahoma state cowgirl soccer SEASON IN REVIEW By its standards, Oklahoma State had a disappointing season in But it also speaks to the recent success of the program when an 11-win campaign isn t one that meets expectations. It was a rebuilding year of sorts for coach Colin Carmichael, who often started as many as six true freshmen, but there were a number of positives to build upon for a club that finished overall. The Cowgirls opened the season with six consecutive wins, including a thrilling triumph at No. 24 Memphis, and reeled off nine victories in its first 10 matches. Big 12 Conference play would not be as kind to Carmichael s squad, who finished and in seventh place in the league, with three of the losses coming by a single goal. OSU lost to 15th-ranked Baylor in the opening round of the Big 12 Soccer Championship, seeing its streak of four-straight conference titles and six-straight NCAA Tournament berths come to an end. Oklahoma State s senior class of Kassie Embrey, AD Franch, Alicia Gray, Keely Kippenberger, Megan Marchesano, Carson Michalowski, and Casey Smith finished the season as the 6th winningest senior class in the NCAA in The Cowgirls were (.755) over the last four seasons. No other Big 12 team won more games during that span. OSU had four All-Big 12 Conference performers in Senior goalie AD Franch was named to the All-Big 12 First Team for the fourth time in her career, becoming the first player in Cowgirl soccer history and just the seventh in Big 12 history to achieve that feat. Senior forward Megan Marchesano, senior defender Carson Michalowski and freshman midfielder Madison Mercado were each on the All-Big 12 Second Team. Freshmen Madison Mercado and Kelsey Bass were named to the Big 12 All-Newcomer Team. Goalie AD Franch became the first three-time NSCAA All-American in OSU history. She was a first-team All-American in 2012, marking the secondstraight year she earned that honor. AD Franch was named to the Soccer America 2012 MVPs Second Team. Several Cowgirls were named to various teams of the week, including: * Madison Mercado was named the Big 12 Conference Newcomer of the Week on Aug. 28. * AD Franch was named the Big 12 Defensive Player of the Week on Oct. 2. * Megan Marchesano was named a CollegeSoccer360.com Primetime Performer of the Week on Sept. 4. AD Franch, Carson Michalowski and Megan Marchesano were each named to the TopDrawerSoccer.com Women s National Top 100 Rankings. That trio, along with Miriam Rhinehart, were also ranked among the Big 12 s top 20 players. Three Cowgirl seniors goalie AD Franch, defender Carson Michalowski and forward Megan Marchesano earned NSCAA All-Central Region honors. Franch was a first-team honoree, while Marchesano and Michalowski made the third team. The Cowgirls were ranked No. 5 in the NSCAA preseason poll, which marked the highest preseason ranking in program history. OSU was ranked in the national top 25 in each of the season s first nine weeks, extending a program-record streak of consecutive weeks in the national rankings to 38. The Cowgirls climbed to as high as No. 3 in the national polls in 2012 and saw a record streak of being ranked in the top five of the NSCAA poll extended to 16-straight weeks. For the second-straight year, OSU was undefeated on its home field, finishing at the Cowgirl Soccer Complex. Carson Michalowski & AD Franch Goalie AD Franch finished her career with an OSU-record 38 career shutouts, which ranks sixth all time in NCAA history.
