8 Coach Wulff s Thoughts Entering Spring Practice Are you excited to finally get going? I am very excited to get going. In fact the best our coaches have felt is when we are with the current players working out. It s exciting just to get on the field finally and get to work. How has the off-season condition program gone? The offseason workouts have gone well. It is more or less creating an expectation of how we are going to do our daily business. The intensity and effort now has to carry over onto the football field because we need to practice with that same level of intensity and mental focus. How important is spring ball to a football program? In this situation it is very important. We have new coaches and players trying to get better and learn the system. As a coaching staff we are getting to know the players and what they are capable of doing. This is a very critical time for us. I think it always is in a program when there has been change, at least for the first two springs if you can get a system in place. After you get to years four, five and six, then you have a better feel of where everybody is at relative to you program. It is going to take us a couple of years to get a great feel of exactly where we are. Spring practice is usually a time to focus on technique yet with a new staff you also have to incorporate a completely new system. What are the challenges of doing that? The bottom line is we need to get everything in. We need to teach scheme and teach technique. We only have so much time and we need to utilize all the time we have available from meetings to time on the field. We have a lot to cover and we will get there. It is our jobs as coaches to make sure we keep it simple enough and that our teachings are very efficient so ultimately we are executing properly. How is the new coaching staff coming together? We are all working hard to make sure we are on the same page and conveying the same message. The nice thing is I am familiar with all the guys and everyone is very comfortable with each other. Everyone s goal is the same, to have our program perform at a high level. All of these guys are team guys and don t have their own agendas. I know that is how the staff is and ultimately how it needs to be for us to succeed. How is the injuries situation heading into spring ball? We are still a little limited with a few guys. Unfortunately, Jared Bjerkestrand torn his Achilles tendon in a workout so he is out. We were hoping he would have a solid spring at the receiver position. Ben Woodard is still limited following his hernia surgery after last season. Steven Ayers isn t going to be cleared 100 percent for contact drills after shoulder surgery last fall. Devin Giles is being held out of all football activities so he can focus on his academics. Dwight Tardy is not cleared for spring but he is on track and doing very well. By summer workouts he should be cleared to do everything and with a good hard summer in front of him he should be ready to go in fall camp. With the new coaching staff is it fair to say every player has an equal opportunity to prove themselves? I believe every player has a clean slate. We have asked them to do certain things a certain way. Some of them have made some mistakes and we have worked on correcting those so they don t occur again. Every kid deserves an opportunity. There are some players who maybe felt they didn t have a fair opportunity in the past, whether they did or didn t really doesn t matter at this point. They all have an opportunity to prove themselves and show consistency in their daily lives. We as coaches are here to help these guys get better. We want to do our best to bring these guys together and form a team.
