Harrison (515) ajh015@drake.edu Online Social Media Website: Facebook: Drake Athletics; Drake University Football FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE Monday, March 21, 2011 Drake Bulldogs Spring Football Practice Begins March 23 Spring Drills Take on Greater Emphasis With May Trip to Africa on Horizon Drake s 2011 spring football season will be unlike any in its long history, in that it will also serve as preparation for the team s once-in-a-lifetime trip to Africa in May to take part in Global Kilimanjaro Bowl (see below). The team is schedule to depart May 17 for the May 21 game to be played in Tanzania. Practice Schedule: The Bulldogs will hold 15 practices at Drake Stadium between March 23-April 23. Wednesday practices begin at 3:39 p.m. and Friday sessions at 3:29 p.m., unless noted. Saturdays vary, as listed below. Media availability occurs prior to practice. Practices are open for viewing and photography. Spring Practice Dates: March: 23, 25, 26 (9:59a), 30 April: 1, 2 (10:29a), 6, 8, 9 (2:04a), 11, 13, *16 (1:14p), 20, 22 (2:59p) *(practice at Johnston HS) Spring Game: Saturday, April 23 Media Policies: Media are welcome to attend Drake football practices throughout the spring, but must coordinate their visit in advance with Drake Asst. The major theme throughout the winter conditioning period has been Finish. Drake in 2010 lost just two conference games, both on the road to Pioneer Football League co-champions Dayton and Jacksonville. Each was decided in the final minutes with the Bulldogs in position to win.! Drake returns 10 starters on offense and seven on defense! The Bulldogs boast eight returning starters who earned All-PFL honors in 2010: 1 st Team Honorable Mention LB Tyler Moorehead (Mason City, Iowa) QB Mike Piatkowski (Wheaton, Ill.) Drake again features a strong class of seniors and fifth-year seniors who will provide the leadership, direction and tone for the 2011 Bulldogs. Quotes From The Coach: Head Coach Chris Creighton entering spring drills: (On the unique nature of 2011 Spring Drills) Unlike any other year, having the Kilimanjaro Bowl in Africa in mid-may provides a source of focus and sense of sharpness to this year s spring drills. It does have an effect on spring ball, knowing we are going to be putting our game jerseys on, just about a month after our spring game. There s not going to be the feeling that there will be such a long wait before we play again. For our redshirt freshmen and some other guys who may not have played yet in an actual game, their first game will be this historic event, which I think is exciting. (On the desire and focus of the 2011 Bulldogs) Our team the last two years has been really close, in so many different ways. Two years ago we were literally four seconds away from winning a championship. Last year we lost in the final seconds at Dayton and had a chance in the final minutes at Jacksonville the two co-champions. In the last two years we ve been right there with the opportunity to win a championship. Everybody in our program is willing and ready to do what that next step is to become champions of the PFL. One of our themes from winter conditioning was to finish everything we did every drill, every set, in the weight room and in the agilities. It took us to another level. And that needs to continue throughout the spring, summer and into the fall.

2 Drake Bulldogs Spring Football Press Release March 21, 2011 Page 2 Global Kilimanjaro Bowl: The Drake Bulldogs will travel to the east African country of Tanzania for the May 21 Global Kilimanjaro Bowl, in which they will face an all-star team from Mexico representing the CONADEIP Conference.! The game will be played at the 15,000-capacity Sheik Amri Abeid Memorial Stadium in the city of Arusha. This historic event, organized in conjunction with Texas-based Global Football, also will allow Drake s student-athletes, coaches and traveling party on a once-in-a-lifetime experience that includes a youth orphanage service project, a football clinic, two practices with the CONADEIP All-Stars and an ascent of 19,340-foot Mt. Kilimanjaro. For more information please visit The Kili Bowl will be officiated by a very accomplished crew of game officials, it was announced March 14. Veteran college football referee Bill LeMonnier, who has BCS National Championship Game experience, will serve as referee, and will be joined by Umpire Chris Fivek, Head Linesman Todd Desmond, Line Judge Mark Armstrong, Side Judge Jeff Holter and Back Judge Mario Matos.! Drake s student-athletes have been instrumental in the fundraising for this trip, for which each is responsible for his own travel costs. Among other fundraising efforts the team held a weightlifting Lift-A-Thon on January 16 that raised $104,000, nearly one-third the needed total to fully fund the trip. Head Coach Coach Creighton: Drake football enters its fourth season under the direction of head coach Chris Creighton, who has compiled a record over his first three years, including victories in 19 of the Bulldogs last 27 contests.! Ranked 36 th in winning percentage (.762) among active college coaches at all levels, Creighton has fashioned a record in 14 seasons as a head coach.! His Wabash teams won North Coast Athletic Conference titles in four of his seven seasons at the Division III school in Crawfordsville, Ind.! In four seasons at Ottawa (Kansas) his teams won two Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference titles (1997, 2000), its first two since 1972.! An All-America quarterback at Kenyon (Ohio) College, Creighton led the school to its only North Coast Athletic Conference title in 1989 and was named conference player of the year. He was inducted into the Kenyon College Athletic Hall of Fame in Creighton earned a Bachelor of Arts degree in 1991 and a master s degree from Concordia (Ill.) University in 1993.! Creighton was hired Dec. 22, 2007 as the 25 th head coach in the history of Drake football.! I asked them why, and they said, because we love playing football. As coaches, we love it as well. We re doing what we love and we have the 15 practices to get better. We get the opportunity to build chemistry and work on new ideas scheme-wise and technique-wise. The redshirted freshmen are no longer redshirts. They ve been here, and it s really their first opportunity to show what they can do and be part of our offense, defense and special teams. The chemistry on our team is very strong right now. We are going to be missing some superstars off of last year s team, but as a whole I m really excited about our team. We ll have our fair share of superstars who emerge this year. We have a lot folks who are going to be competing for spots and playing time, and contributing to this year s team, so I m really excited about that. We have a group this year of 13 guys who are in their last year of eligibility, either true seniors or fifth-year seniors. The leadership component that is stressed greatly in our program. Leadership is not a position, it s influence. However, the guys who have been in the program the longest seem to rise as the guys with the most influence. This group is really excited to continue to make the program what they know it can be. We re not going to spend much specific time on (the Kili Bowl) during spring, because we just want to get great at fundamentals and learn the new defense with a new coordinator (Brian Ward). And because we get practices prior to the Kilimanjaro Bowl. We ll practice here for a couple days, and have a couple days of practice in Africa. Notes From the Offseason:! Brian Ward was named defensive coordinator at Drake in February. He was defensive backs coach at North Dakota State the past two years after three seasons as head coach at his alma mater McPherson College. He has coached previously under Chris Creighton at Wabash College ( ).! Drake Ass.
