2 Head Coach Ray Lopes Despite having spent just two years at the helm of Fresno State, Ray Lopes has already guided his team to a WAC title, won league coach of the year honors and received national recognition as one of the country s young coaches. Now as he enters year three, he embarks on a new challenge: Rebuilding the Bulldogs into a tough, disciplined outfit capable of challenging for a WAC title and postseason berths every year. Lopes was named the school s men s basketball coach on April 3, 2002, and immediately stoked fans interest by displaying a piece of the net snipped from San Jose Arena after the Oklahoma team for which he was an assistant defeated Missouri to advance to the Final Four. Just 333 days later, Lopes promise became reality when his Fresno State team, predicted to finish fifth by both the Western Athletic Conference coaches and media, defeated Nevada in double overtime in the final home game of the season. It was just the program s second outright league title since entering the conference in For his efforts, he was named WAC Coach of the Year and Rookie Coach of the Year by CBSSportsline.com. Last year, Lopes held Fresno State together through a tumultuous season in which the team lost nearly 60 percent of its offense by February through injuries and player suspensions. The Bulldogs finished (10-8 WAC), the eighth time in nine years the program experienced a winning league record. Prior to Fresno State, Lopes served as a top assistant coach at the University of Oklahoma for eight years under Kelvin Sampson. While with the Sooners, he became no stranger to postseason play. OU made eight consecutive NCAA appearances with Lopes on staff, including a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1999 and the 2002 Final Four. The Sooners won at least 20 games five seasons in a row, averaging 26 wins per year, including a 31-5 record in The Sooners had a record while Lopes was an assistant coach and won the 2001 and 02 Big 12 Tournament title. Lopes also served as an assistant coach under Sampson for one season at Washington State, where he helped the Cougars to a record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He joined the Washington State staff after a four-year stint as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara from under head coach Jerry Pimm, helping the Gauchos to three postseason tournament appearances. Lopes gained his first Division I coaching position in 1988 at Weber State under Denny Huston, where he tutored the Wildcat guards for one season. He began his coaching career at West Valley (Saratoga, Calif.) Community College as an assistant during the season. There he helped guide West Valley to a 23-7 record and a spot in the state tournament s Elite Eight. A native of New Haven, Conn., Lopes moved to Hayward, Calif., as a junior in high school. He played two seasons at West Valley before transferring to Albertson College of Idaho. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Albertson College in Lopes and his wife, Pierrette, have two daughters, Alaina and Teylor, and a son, Trey. Maryland-Eastern Shore has been picked to finish 10th in the 11-team Mid- Eastern Athletic Conference. Like Fresno State, UMES has had to rebuild its team after losing four of its top five scorers off of last year s squad. Entering , the Hawks are led by Tim Parham, a junior center who is the top returning scorer and rebounder and 6.3 and 3.3, respectively. Maryland-Eastern Shore s second-leading returning scorer is senior forward Jareem Dowling, who posted a 3.6 average last year. UMES played just one exhibition game during the preseason, losing to Elizabeth City (N.C.) State University, an NCAA Division II school. In addition to their seven newcomers, the Hawks are also led by a new coach. Larry Postgame Procedures Fresno State head coach Ray Lopes and players are available for interviews following an NCAA-mandated 10-minute cooling off period both at home and on the road. Following are the team s interview procedures for home and road games: At home: Ray Lopes will conduct his postgame interview in the media hospitality room, located at the south end of Selland Arena. Selected players are brought into the player interview room, adjacent to the media hospitality room on the other side of the black curtain. The visiting team s coach may be interviewed outside of its locker room, which may be accessed through the tunnel on the southwest corner of the arena. On the road: Lopes will be taken to the coaches interview room following his schedule postgame radio commitment. If there is no press conference for Lopes, he, as well as selected players, may be interviewed outside of the locker room area. Please direct questions about interview policies and locations to Jake Bragonier, Fresno State Assistant Media Relations Director, or any member of the Fresno Lessett is in his first year as the leader of a Division I program. He came to the Hawks after serving as a global scout for Magic Johnson International Basketball. Maryland-Eastern Shore Recent Games Devin Mooring scored 14 points and Tremayne Singletary added 12 off the bench as Elizabeth City (N.C.) State knocked off Maryland-Eastern Shore in an exhibition game on Saturday. Corey Brown had 13 for the Hawks, who committed 24 turnovers and shot just 36.5 percent. The Division II Vikings shot 57 percent in the first half and led at the intermission. Hernandez Expected to Play Tonight Hector Hernandez, the only scholarship newcomer who did not see action in either of the exhibition games, is expected to be eligible for tonight s contest. One of the more heralded of the newcomers, the freshman missed the Fresno Pacific game with a hamstring injury then was forced to sit out against CSU Monterey Bay because he had yet to be declared eligible by the NCAA Clearinghouse. Ray Lopes received word Wednesday that Hernandez, a native of Chihuahua, Mexico, who had a 3.7 GPA in high school, had achieved a test score that made him eligible for the campaign. Bulldogs Ink Two to Play in Fresno State head coach Ray Lopes announced the signing of two players to letters of intent this week. High school seniors Eric Van Vliet and James Tchana will both begin playing for the Bulldogs in the season. Van Vliet is a 6-10, 250-pound center from Santa Cruz, Calif., who averaged 10 points and 10 rebounds per game last year at Santa Cruz High School. He was especially strong this summer when, by all accounts, he greatly improved his offensive prowess to the point where it nearly matches his defensive ability. Tchana is 6-8, 275-pound forward at Our Savior New American (Centereach, N.Y.) High School who averaged 12 points and 10 rebounds last year. A native of Cameroon who moved to the U.S. prior to his sophomore year, Tchana had a big summer during camps, earning honors at the presitigious Five Star Camp in Pittsburgh. Post players were to be an area of need for Fresno State, which is losing senior centers Mustafa Al-Sayyad and Jack Marlow following the campaign. Fresno State Starts Strong in Classroom Although the Bulldogs have not officially taken the court yet this year, in the classroom they are already receiving successful marks. With the majority of the team enrolled in summer school, the outcome was a combined 3.07 GPA. The academic performance has coincided with the adoption of the Academic Gameplan, an innovative study-skills program developed by the Bulldogs associate head football coach John Baxter.

The conference media selected the Bulldogs to finish eighth while the coaches voted them ninth. UTEP was the unanimous pick to win the WAC while Rice was second. Fresno State has just three letterwinners returning from last year squad, but perhaps a bigger reason of why the Bulldogs were placed in the lower half was due to the 10 newcomers (nine freshman) the team has on the roster. No Fresno State players were named to the preseason All-WAC teams. WAC Preseason Coaches Poll 1. Current assistant coach Vonn Webb was the school s highly successful head coach for seven years, winning five Central Section titles and two Division III state championships. While at Washington, which has turned out such NBA talent as Chris Jefferies and DeShawn Stevenson as well as former Bulldog standout Demetrius Porter, Webb coached three players currently on the Bulldog roster: Dwight O Neil, Ja Vance Coleman and Carl Ross. O Neil departed school as Washington s fourth-leading scorer all-time while Coleman initially came to Fresno State in before transferring to College of the Sequoias, where he starred last year. Ross, who was teammates with O Neil, has been a pleasant surprise during preseason practice. He started the exhibition game against CSU Monterey Bay and even won the dunk contest at the Red/White Scrimmage. Bouldin to Miss First Six Games of Season Fresno State will be forced to operate without one of its returnees for the first part of the season. Senior forward Dreike Bouldin will miss the opening six regular season games to focus on his academics. The first game Bouldin will be eligible for is the Dec. 18 contest against Oregon. He finished last year by averaging 4.5 points and 4.7 rebounds per game but was very strong down the stretch, posting an 11.2 scoring and 8.3 rebounding average in the final six games.

Ja Vance Coleman added 17 points while Mustafa Al-Sayyad had seven points and seven rebounds. The NAIA Sunbirds shot only 33 percent and were just 3-of-21 from beyond the arc. CSU Monterey Bay Recap Ja Vance Coleman scored 24 points and shot 6-of-8 from three-point territory to lead Fresno State to an victory over CSU Monterey Bay on Sunday at the Save Mart Center. Chris Berry added 16 points, six blocks and five rebounds as the Bulldogs outshot the Division II Otters 50 to 35 percent. Fresno State led just at halftime but limited CSUMB to 10 points the opening 10 minutes of the second half in extending its lead to 20 points. Up Tempo Offense on Display With a plentitude of athletic guards, head coach Ray Lopes has said he plans on picking up the tempo on offense this year. And after both exhibition games, it s evident he wasn t lying. In hitting at least 80 points in both contests, the Bulldogs accomplished something they ve never done under Lopes surpass 80 points in consecutive games. In fact, in the 57 games played under their head coach, the Bulldogs have surpassed 80 points in regulation only four times. Large Roster Expands Bulldogs Options During Fresno State s WAC championship run in , head coach Ray Lopes primarily used an eight-man rotation. Last year, suspensions and injuries often limited the Bulldogs to only seven available players. But this year, a larger roster means Fresno State may sometimes go as deep as 10 players, depending on the situation. In addition, Lopes also plans on using better team athleticism to increase the pace on offense. Because of this, the Bulldogs may feature a three-guard lineup at times. Defense to Play Key Role in Success If there s one thing fans and opponents have learned about a Ray Lopes coached team, it s that they will play very strong defense. In his rookie season, which culminated in a WAC title, Fresno State led the league in scoring defense nearly the entire season and wound up allowing only 66.7 points per game. Then last year, the Bulldogs really put the clamps down on opposing offenses, surrendering just 61.8 points, by far the best in the conference and the 25th-best mark in the nation. Moose on the Loose Much of the anticipation surrounding Mustafa Al-Sayyad s senior year is due to the strong fashion in which he finished The center was one of the WAC s best players down the stretch, averaging 14.8 points and 8.0 rebounds per game as well as 1.4 blocks, the latter statistic aiding Al-Sayyad s placement on the league s All- Defensive Team. Here is a statistical breakdown of Al-Sayyad s season, including his strong last six games: PPG RPG BPG TPG MPG First 18 Games Last 5 Games Last 6 Games Schedule to Test Young Bulldogs Fresno State s schedule has them playing 13 games against teams who participated in the postseason last year. The first of those contests comes next week when the Bulldogs travel to play at East Tennessee State, which nearly upset Cincinnati in the NCAA Tournament s first round a season ago. Other key nonconference games pit Fresno State against USC (Dec. 8), Oregon (Dec. 18) and Pacific (Dec. 21). The Bulldogs open Western Athletic Conference action at home Dec. 29 against Hawaii. League foes Nevada and UTEP both NCAA Tournament teams in 2004 both have two games against Fresno State, as do NIT participants Hawaii, Boise State and Rice. The end of the season should be arduous, with Fresno State finishing up on the island just before the start of the WAC Tournament in Reno, Nev., which runs March 8-12.

UMES-Fresno State Connection Despite being separated by 2,903 miles, Fresno State and Maryland-Eastern Shore do have a connection. Arturo Ormond, currently an assistant coach with the Bulldogs, spent two years as an assistant at UMES from before moving on to Centenary. Ormond is the senior member of Ray Lopes assistant coaching staff, having spent all three years with the head coach since he took over in Ormond Welcomes New Addition This has already been an exciting week for assistant coach Arturo Ormond. Not only he is receiving unprecedented exposure in these game notes, but more importantly he and his wife welcomed their first child to the world on Wednesday. Ormond s wife, Marina, gave birth to a healthy baby girl, Autri Pedry Ormond, at 3:45 p.m. Ormond returned to practice Thursday and will be on the bench tonight. Hoping for Better Results at Home Fresno State had a feeling of invincibility at home in , going 14-1 and winning four games on last-second shots. In addition, the home finale was a double overtime thriller over Nevada, a game that clinched the WAC title for the Bulldogs. But it s quite obvious that team left no good karma for last year s players. Fresno State wound up a dreadful 2-5 at the Save Mart Center in games decided by five points or less (and 3-8 overall). The list of opponents who hit gamewinning or game-prolonging shots in the final minute of contests was long Princeton, Creighton, USC, Rice, UTEP and East Tennessee State. The Bulldogs finished as one of four WAC teams with a.500 road record (6-6), but were the only team of that foursome that had a below-.500 home mark (8-9). This n That Fresno State has played four games against Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference teams in its history, but only one of those officially counted, that being a win over Florida A&M in The other three came between and were vacated due the Bulldogs use of an ineligible player... Larry Lessett of UMES is one of six first-year coaches Fresno State will play this year... Maryland- Eastern Shore s enrollment of 3,600 make it the smallest school the Bulldogs will play in Centenary, which Fresno State beat in 2002, is the smallest school (905) played during the Ray Lopes Era.
