3 Head Coach Ray Lopes Year at Fresno State: 2nd Fresno State Record: 20-8 Career Record: 20-8 Awards: 2003 WAC Coach of the Year CBSSportsline.com Rookie Coach of the Year When Ray Lopes was named as Fresno State s new men s basketball coach on April 3, 2002, he spoke to a large gathering of media and fans and educated them on what they should expect from his Bulldogs. This is a tremendous opportunity for me and my family, said Lopes, who is the 16th coach in Fresno State history. I m thrilled to be the head coach at an institution where I can have the same kind of success I enjoyed as an assistant at Oklahoma. I m extremely excited about Fresno State and the future of the Bulldog basketball program. This is a great campus and a wonderful community. I m looking forward to building in the great tradition that Coach Tarkanian built. Lopes took over a Bulldog program that had made seven consecutive postseason appearances, including two trips to the NCAA Tournament in a three-year span. After going 20-8 and claiming the conference regular season title last season, the Bulldogs appeared primed for a run into late-march yet again. But prior to the final regular season road trip of the year, Fresno State chose to selfimpose a ban on postseason play as a result of academic A tough, disciplined outfit, Lopes promised. A team the Valley could be proud of. But most importantly, his Bulldogs would continue the program s winning tradition. For emphasis, Lopes pulled a string of a basketball net out of the pocket of his coat. It was a lock snipped from San Jose Arena after the Oklahoma team for which he was an assistant defeated Missouri to advance to the Final Four. This, promised Lopes as he brandished the net to the onlookers, is what we want to be cutting down at Fresno State. No one in attendance that day could have ever imagined his vow would come true just 333 days after he made it. Lopes inherited a team that was projected to finish fifth by both the Western Athletic Conference coaches and media and guided it to a 20-8 record and a first place finish in the league. It was just the program s second WAC title since entering the conference in For his efforts, he was named WAC Coach of the Year and Rookie Coach of the Year by CBSSportsline.com. Having become one of the hottest young coaches in the nation by virtue of leading Fresno State to unexpected heights in just his first year, Lopes was wooed by Iowa State in the offseason to become its new head coach. After careful soul-searching, he elected to remain in Fresno, meaning Lopes will be the first coach in the new Save Mart Center when the Bulldogs open play there in November. Before coming to Fresno State, the popular Lopes spent eight years as a top assistant at Oklahoma under Kelvin Sampson. At Fresno State, he took over for the legendary Jerry Tarkanian, who announced his retirement after the season.

4 Head Coach Ray Lopes fraud involving former men s basketball players. The ban ended Fresno State s season before a possible WAC Tournament title and bid in the NCAA s. But that couldn t take away one fact that Lopes had taken a team picked to finish in the middle of the WAC race in both the preseason coaches and media polls and guided them into the conference s high-rent district. Lopes is no stranger to success, helping the Sooners to eight consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances, plus a trip to the Sweet 16 in 1999 and the 2002 Final Four. While at Oklahoma, the Sooners won at least 20 games five seasons in a row, averaging 26 wins per year, including a 31-5 record in The Sooners had a record while Lopes was an assistant coach and won the 2001 and 02 Big 12 Tournament title. Oklahoma was no worse than a No. 4 seed in the NCAA Tournament over his last three years. Ray Lopes is one of the brightest assistant coaches in college basketball, said Fresno State A.D. Scott Johnson The Ray Lopes File Personal Birthplace: Hartford, Conn. Grew Up: New Haven, Conn. W L Pct Fresno State Won WAC title at the time of Lopes hiring. From the first time we met, I was very impressed with him as a coach, as a professional and as a person. Ray has the total package of what we were looking for in a head coach. While at Oklahoma, Lopes was responsible for recruiting, scouting and game preparation, as well as onthe-floor coaching and the development of Sooner frontcourt players. He was also heavily involved in scheduling. During his tenure he recruited and coached Eduardo Najara, now of the Dallas Mavericks, Aaron McGhee, the 2000 National Junior College Player of the Year, a first-team All-Big 12 selection, and Ebi Ere, the 2002 Big 12 Newcomer of the Year and 2001 National Junior College Tournament MVP. Ray has the vision and desire to take this program to a high level, said Johnson. His reputation as a recruiter and coach are excellent. We are looking forward to a long-lasting and successful relationship. Lopes served as an assistant coach under Sampson for one season at Washington State, where he helped the Cougars to a record and a berth in the NCAA Tournament. He joined the Washington State staff after a four-year stint as an assistant at UC Santa Barbara from under head coach Jerry Pimm. The Gauchos posted a record and advanced to three postseason tournaments. In 1990, UC Santa Barbara advanced to the second round of the NCAA Southeast Regional before losing to the Steve Smith-led Michigan State Spartans. That year, the Gauchos knocked off Tarkanian s great UNLV team that won 34 consecutive games and the NCAA title. Lopes gained his first Division I coaching position in 1988 at Weber State under Denny Huston, where he tutored the Wildcat guards for one season. He began his coaching career at West Valley (Saratoga, Calif.) Community College as an assistant during the season. There he helped guide West Valley to a 23-7 record and a spot in the state tournament s Elite Eight. During his 14 seasons as an assistant coach, Lopes has been in the postseason 12 years, including 10 NCAA Tournament appearances. A native of New Haven, Conn., Lopes moved to Hayward, Calif., as a junior in high school. He played two seasons at West Valley before transferring to Albertson College of Idaho. He was a two-year starter for the Coyotes and led them to two consecutive district championships and trips to the NAIA National Championship in Kansas City. He earned a bachelor of arts degree in business administration from Albertson College in Lopes and his wife, Pierrette, have two daughters, Alaina (11) and Teylor (8), and a son, Trey (3).

5 Assistant Coaching Staff Guy Beach Assistant Coach First Year Guy Beach is entering his first year on the Fresno State coaching staff. He comes to the Bulldogs from the College of Southern Idaho, where for the last two years he had served as the head coach. In his two years Southern Idaho, Beach led the Golden Eagles to a record and back-to-back appearances in the Region 18 Championships. Beach also has head coaching experience at the College of Eastern Utah (Price, Utah), where from he compiled a record. During his second year, Beach led the Golden Eagles to their only conference title in program history. He also served as an assistant at CEU for seven seasons before becoming the school's head coach. In his four years as a JC head coach, Beach recorded a record. Everywhere Guy has been, he has been successful, Lopes said. He was a tremendous assistant at Weber State and UTEP and a very good head coach at Eastern Utah and Southern Idaho. We are really looking forward to him adding to our staff as a great coach and recruiter. A 1988 graduate of Weber State, Beach has Division I assistant coaching experience at Weber State, where he served as an assistant from , including a stint as the associate head coach for five months in From there, he moved to UTEP to serve as an assistant coach from , leaving to accept the head coaching position at the College of Southern Idaho. Ormond has proven to be an invaluable member of the Fresno State coaching staff. Owning an excellent knowledge of the game and an ability to break down opponent s strengths and weaknesses, Ormond has also displayed a exceptional knack for recruiting. Jonathan Woods, Renaldo Major and Dreike Bouldin are players he had a hand in helping bring to the Bulldogs. Prior to joining the Bulldogs, Ormond spent three years as an assistant at Centenary, where he helped guide the Gents to a record in his final year. A native of Chicago, Ormond is a 1991 graduate of Texas-Pan American, where he played point guard and helped lead the Broncs to their last season with more than 20 wins in Arturo brings a wealth of experience at the Division I level, Lopes said. He s hungry and is a tireless worker who was ecstatic at the opportunity to become a member of our basketball staff. As a Chicago native, he is a link to a city that historically has provided this program with some very good players. As a player at Cowley County (Arkansas City, Kan.) Community College, Ormond was the starting point guard and led his team to a 21-9 record. He was named the school s Student-Athlete of the Year. After earning his master s degree from UTPA in 1993, Ormond returned to Chicago to begin his coaching career. He served as an assistant coach at Farragut High School before becoming an assistant at Tuskegee University. In 1995, Ormond joined the staff at Texas-Pan American. 6 Bulldogs Look to Defend WAC Crown Fresno State returns two starters and three letterwinners from last year s WAC championship team that went 20-8 (13-5 WAC). Back for the Bulldogs in are WAC All-Newcomer Team member Renaldo Major as well as fellow starter Terry Pettis. Fresh faces will be the story for Fresno State, as four newcomers join the squad along with Shantay Legans, Mustafa Al-Sayyad and Ashley Knowlton, all of whom sat out last season. So Long, Selland Arena... Fresno State s thrilling victory over Nevada on March 1 was the final game ever at Selland Arena, Fresno State s home since the season. The Bulldogs went (.749) all-time at the downtown facility, including a 14-1 mark last year. Named for former Fresno mayor Arthur E. Selland, the arena hosted numerous NIT games and nationallyranked teams, but perhaps the greatest spectacle came in 2000, when Selland Arena hosted the WAC Tournament, won by the Bulldogs. In an online poll conducted leading up to the game, fans chose a 1984 victory over UNLV as the greatest game ever played at Selland....Hello, Save Mart Center The sparkling new Save Mart Center will become the Bulldogs home facility beginning in November. When completed, it will become one of the finest on-campus arenas on the West Coast, boasting a seating capacity of 16,000. Construction on the arena will continue through the summer and an on-time opening is expected. The Save Mart Center will host the 2004 WAC Tournament, the first time Fresno has hosted the conference championships since Legans to Run the Show Shantay Legans redshirted last year after transferring to Fresno State from California in the summer of In , he will don a Bulldog uniform for the first time as the team s point guard. With the Golden Bears, Legans established Notes himself as one of the top point guards in the Pac-10, averaging 9.0 points, 4.1 assists and 2.4 rebounds. Prior to the start of last season, Legans was featured wearing a California uniform on the cover of Street and Smith s college basketball preview edition. Other Returnees Mustafa Al-Sayyad will return to the playing rotation this year, one season after redshirting due to knee problems. The junior played in the first six games of last year but missed the rest of In his Bulldog career, the 6-9 center has been a reserve who has averaged about three points and three boards per game. Also back after missing last season is Ashley Knowlton, who should serve as a capable backup to Shantay Legans. A senior, Knowlton appeared in line to receive playing time heading into last year before tearing ligaments in his left knee during practice in October. Knowlton is a native of Clovis, Calif., who transferred from West Valley College, where he played for former Fresno State assistant coach Bob Burton. Plenty to Replace Fresno State s surprising run to last year s WAC title was built primarily on the shoulders of the team s four seniors Damon Jackson, Hiram Fuller, Noel Felix and Travis DeManby. Jackson led the Bulldogs with a 13.3 scoring average. But most importantly, Jackson, a first-team All-WAC honoree who was the runner-up for the conference player of the year award, nailed four game-winning shots and two more that extended games into overtime. Fuller, a secondteam All-WAC selection, posted 10.0 points and 7.4 boards a game and was exceptional in conference contests. Travis DeManby and Noel Felix both logged considerable minutes that will need to be filled by some of the newer Bulldogs. New Coaches Coming The four newcomers won t be the only different faces on the Fresno State bench this upcoming year. The Bulldogs will feature two new assistant coaches and a new basketball operations coordinator. In June, Bob Burton was hired as the head coach at Cal State Fullerton. Burton, who was a highly successful head coach at West Valley College before spending one year at Fresno State, took with him to be his assistant Andy Newman, who had served as the Bulldogs operations coordinator. Also departing was David Fizdale, who accepted a job as an assistant coach with the Golden State Warriors. Fizdale, like Burton and Newman, had spent one season with Fresno State. The Schedule Several familiar foes dot this year s non-conference schedule, highlighted by a showdown with USC on Dec. 19. San Francisco, Pacific and Santa Clara, which annually play the Bulldogs, once again appear on the schedule. Washington State and Creighton, both of which Fresno State lost to last year, make trips to the Save Mart Center in The WAC schedule kicks off at Hawai i on Jan. 3. One positive about this year s ledger is that Fresno State plays its final three games of the year at home. In addition, the Bulldogs will host this year s WAC Tournament. NCAA Decision Pending Due to findings of academic fraud that occurred during the and seasons, Fresno State selfimposed a ban on postseason play last year, meaning that even though the Bulldogs went 20-8 and won the WAC title, they were not eligible for postseason play. None of the irregularities involved any of the current staff or players. The NCAA is expected to rule on Fresno State s case sometime in August, at which point they will determine whether the penalties already levied are acceptable. In December 2002, Fresno State announced a corrective action plan for the athletics department, which included a two-year probation on the men s basketball program as well as the loss of three grants-in-aid over a two-year period, beginning in 2004.
