Fun To Learn Skills Develop Fitness Enjoy Competition So Why Do They Quit? 1. Lost interest 2. Coach plays favorites 3. Not having fun 4. Developed other non-sport interest Get them to come back tomorrow! 1

2 They call it coaching, but it s teaching. You do not just tell them you show them the reason. -Vince Lombardi Step #1 Create a Coaching Foundation Why are you Coaching? A. Youth Football Coach to Receive a Six Figure Signing Bonus as Returning League Champions B. Father & Son Relationship C. Love of the Game & Share your passion and love to next generation. Do I know the game well enough to teach it? How will I teach the game? Hard nosed or fun loving What are my expectation s of team and individual players? Golden Rule-Treat each player as you want him to BE not what they are! LIMIT CRITICISM Be positive with players as much as possible. Make a conscientious effort to praise before you criticize. 2

3 How to Motivate My Team? Your motivation is based on helping your athletes reach their potential. Their goals are your goals! Find out what their goals are! Not just the games Make it ALL Fun! Practice must be fun. Players must look forward to coming to practice to work hard throughout practice. Variety gets this accomplished. Positive environment needed Get in the kids shoes. Be on their level to have fun. Step 2: Be Organized All aspects of the coaching role Help the head coach foresee issues or tasks Host pre-season meeting with parents & players Coach a Kid on Each Play! Get a scout team, ball spotters & chain crew Move Ball down field 3

4 Practice Organization 1. Plan for every minute of practice. 2. Make sure that all coaches have a copy of the practice schedule. 3. Plan for tomorrow's practice after today s practice Goals for the week Fundamentals Group Work Offensive Team Defensive Team Special Teams Resources Available Number of Coaches Equipment Players Practice Area Practice Organization The HFC controls the tempo of the practice. Set a time for each drill and stick to it. It will teach both players and coaches efficient time management (5 minutes to teach a skill!). A quick whistle must be used to prevent injuries. Make practice as close to game tempo as possible. Overcome fear of contact Roll around with pads on- tackle stand up dummies Proper Match ups but also challenge players Practice Organization Focus no more than seconds per play in team period. Don t over coach! Spend a period during each practice on Form Tackling! 5 QB Center Exchange Drill QB starts and takes 3 snaps per lineman QB works down the line then QB#2 works down line QB # 3 jumps in and works down line Each player is snapping and getting accustomed to different sizes and styles At end of line, rotates to beginning of group Step 3: Tips to Avoid Game Day Mistakes KISS Theory- Keep It Simple Stupid Getting all the players in the game Don t wait for till end of the game Challenge kids during week to play with first & second team Teach Game Clock Management Deal with mistakes and penalties Take blame for lose, praise players for the win! Step 3: Tips to Avoid Game Day Mistakes Avoid Play Calling Mistakes 1. Coaches must know their team capabilities. (Practice will determine this!) 2. Script your 1 st series or personnel. Know who is in the game and what they do well 3. Chart the success of your plays. 4. If it s working don t mess with it. Go until the Defense Stops you! 5

6 Simple Defensive Reminders Evaluate Players Based On: 1. Alignment 2. Assignment 3. All 11 Players to the Ball (2 whistle rule) Don t Be One of Those Coaches Coaches & Anger Management Can t lash out at every person or object that irritates or annoys us. Can t Control Everything in Life!! So Be in Control Of What You Can Control!! -Bad Calls, Parents, Weather, Players YFBCA s Online Video on Anger Management in Youth Sports Dealing with Officials & Parents All eyes are on YOU Your Reaction will be seen by players, onlookers, league officials, etc. How do you want to be seen? 1. Use Your Voice 2. Never Use Profanity 3. Avoid Threats We ALL Are Adults (We Hope?) Key Reminders 4. Defuse Situation (Don t use emotions to communicate) 5. Ask for their view of the situation. 6. Don t Argue, When you are calm we can discuss the issue. 6

7 Resolving a Conflict 1. Permit the other person to talk without interrupting. 2. Limit discussion to current issue. 3. Choose best time to discuss the issue. 4.
