1 Revised: June, 2016 CHESS TEAM SECTION I: SECTION II: SECTION III: SEASON LIMITATIONS A. The Chess Season runs from October to February. B. The Conference Championship Contest will be held prior to the IHSA State Contest. C. The Conference Championship Contest shall be rotated between the member schools following a schedule developed by the DSA s. CONTEST LIMITATIONS A. No limitations B. Member school may enter open competitions of their choosing. LEVEL OF COMPETITION A. Each member school may enter one team of eight players ranked by ability from lowest, Board Eight, to highest, Board One. B. This team of eight students will be the Varsity Team for each participating, member school. SECTION IV: ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS A. As per each school s requirements. B. In accordance with IHSA guidelines. SECTION V: COACHES MEETING A. A pre-season meeting will be held in September or October to determine conference schedule and to review rules.. B. Post season as determined by the coaches. SECTION VI: AWARDS A. Individual awards are awarded to the three players with the highest Individual Point Totals for each board. B. These players will receive medallions. SECTION VII: CONDUCT OF CONTEST - DUAL MEETS A. No Stacking Rule For each match, the teams will pair their best eight players against each other. If a student is unable to attend, all players ranked below him will move up one position for that match. (In this way, the best eight players available will always be playing. If players are forced to play one or two boards above their normal position, this is usually very instructive and beneficial to the players. This also prevents a player of much lower rank from being forced to

2 play far above his level, which is unfair to that player, and also not very beneficial to him/her). B. The "Touch Move" Rule If during a player's turn he touches a piece, he must make a legal move with that piece, if possible. Once a player's fingers leave apiece, its move is final D. Notation Both players will keep notation for the match and sign each other's sheets after the game. E. Scoring The number of points for the match is as follows: Board Win Draw Loss The team with the most total points wins the match. The points earned by each player are added to that player's Individual Point Total (IPT). The results of a match (both W - L info and additions to IPT's) will be sent to the chairman of the conference. C. Time Clocks for matches will be set for 40 minutes, no time delay, per player. Thus, a match may last no longer than 1 hour and 20 minutes. CONDUCT OF CONTEST - CONFERENCE TOURNAMENT A. The Upstate Eight Conference meet shall be held on the date decided on by the coaches at the pre-season meeting. B. The site shall be determined according to the schedule of rotating tournament hosts as adopted by the Conference Directors of Student Activities. C. Team Composition For the tournament, the teams will play their best eight players. The "No Stacking Rule" will be in effect as outlined above. Teams may use alternatives to replace players that need to leave the tournament early. (Per state rule).

3 D. Format Tournament play will consist of four rounds of matches. The Swiss format will be as described in the U.S. Chess Federation's Official Rules of Chess, sections and variations noted below: 27 28A 28J In case of an odd number of participants, the bye will go to the lowest ranked team. 28L1 28L3 29A-29I E. Scoring Points will be assessed as for regular season play, but with all points doubled. (Thus, a win on first board will be worth 24 points, a win on second board will be worth 22 points, and so on.) These points will be added to Individual Point Totals for the players involved, and to the players' teams' team tournament point totals. F. Time Clocks for matches will be set for 1 hour. Thus, a match may last no longer than 1 hour and 20 minutes G. Tournament Champions The Tournament Champion Team will be the team whose players received the most points during tournament play. The Tournament Champion Team will be awarded a trophy at the end of the tournament. H. Board Awards The three players with the highest Individual Point Totals for each board will receive medals. (24 medals) I. All-Conference Team

4 SECTION VIII: OFFICIALS SECTION IX: REPORTING RESULTS The eight players with the highest Individual Point Totals in the conference will receive certificates as All Conference Team members. J. Communication Cards Communication Cards must be initiated by players per state tournament policy. K. At the end of each game, players are to quietly remove their boards and clocks and leave them in the skittles. After returning boards to the skittles room, you may re-enter the competition room to watch only. All review of games must be conducted in the skittles room. L. The Upstate 8 coaches have the collective responsibility to monitor the "watch only" rule. If a player violates the "watch only" rule, he/she will be asked to leave the competition room for the remainder of that round. M. If a dispute arises or need for rules interpreted, the issue should be addressed to the tournament manager of the home school. A meeting of all coaches will be called and each involved coach will have the opportunity to state his/her grievance to the coaches individually and then the coaches will decide the outcome without their presence. A. The hosting school will provide a tournament manager. B. The host school provides runners as needed. C. Conference member coaches will appoint a conference representative to compile statistical and meet results to be shared with other conference members. A. Conference member coaches will appoint a school representative to compile the statistical breakdown of the competition. B. 5 A. The regular season will consist of a round robin format in which, each team will play each member school one time B. Matches will follow IHSA rules governing play. C. The Conference Championship Contest shall be rotated between the member schools following a schedule developed by the DSA s.
