3 VIKINGS TEAM NOTES CHILDRESS ENTERS 3RD SEASON AT HELM NFL Head Coach: 3rd Year Overall NFL Experience: 11th Year Coaching Experience: 31st Year Overall NFL Record: (.438) Regular Season: (.438) Postseason: 0-0 (.000) Record with MIN: (.438) College: Eastern Illinois ( 78) Entering his third season leading the Vikings, Head Coach Brad Childress has a team built on his principles for winning football. Childress squad features strong play along both lines, a dynamic running game and an opportunistic defense. A bevy of top-fl ight linemen have been important to developing the identity of the Vikings and are now being complimented by emerging playmakers. The offseason addition of 2007 NFL sack leader and All-Pro DE Jared Allen via trade with Kansas City along with free agent starters WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh, and S Madieu Williams fi lled key positions with veteran playmakers. With Allen, the Vikings now have 5 Pro Bowlers along the offensive and defensive lines and 8 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad. Coupled with a pair of proven 1,000-yard runners in the backfi eld and an aggressive defense with a nose for the ball, the Vikings enter 2008 with a strong nucleus of experienced talent. Since taking over the team in 2006, Childress has placed a premium on playing smart football, minimizing mistakes and winning the line of scrimmage. The 2007 Vikings became the 1st team in franchise history to rank #1 in the NFL in rushing offense and rushing defense. The duos of G Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk on offense joined by DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams on defense all made second consecutive Pro Bowl trips in The Vikings offense set franchise records by rushing for 2,634 yards (164.6 yards per game) with rookie phenom Adrian Peterson leading the way with an NFC-best 1,341 yards. Peterson s total ranked as the 2nd-highest in team history, and his 5.6 yards-per-carry average ranked 2nd-best in the NFL. Fellow RB Chester Taylor, coming off his fi rst 1,000-yard rushing season in 2006, fi nished with 844 yards and 7 TDs on 157 carries. Together Peterson and Taylor accounted for 2,185 of the team s rushing total, giving the Vikings the most dangerous rushing tandem in team history in terms of yardage. Second-year QB Tarvaris Jackson showed signifi cant improvement from year one as he threw for 1,911 yards and 9 TDs while rushing for 260 yards and 3 scores despite missing 4 games due to injury. He fi nished the season 8-4 as a starter. Defensively, the Williams tandem shut down the run better than anyone in the NFL, and the Vikings posted the #1 rush defense for the 2nd straight year. Over the past 2 seasons, the team has stifl ed opponents by allowing 67.9 yards per game, 2.9 yards per carry and 0.5 rushing TDs per game in those 32 games. Behind the rugged DTs, the Vikings have an emerging trio of linebackers who have a knack for the big play and ball-hawking defensive backs. The 2007 squad tied a francise record by scoring 6 TDs on interception returns and 2 more on fumble returns. The Vikings 13 defensive TDs (9 INTs, 4 FRs) since 2006 lead the NFL and are 5 more than the runner-up Packers 8. On special teams, the Vikings ranked 4th in the NFL with a 24.8 kickoff return average and 6th in the NFL as they held opponents to an average starting fi eld position just beyond the 26-yard line (26.2). The 2008 season marks Childress 31st in coaching and his 11th on an NFL sideline. He currently has a combined record of , including playoffs and bowl action. CHILDRESS COACHING BACKGROUND Minnesota Vikings Head Coach Philadelphia Eagles Offensive Coordinator Philadelphia Eagles Wide Receivers Wisconsin Offensive Coordinator/QBs/RBs 1990 Utah Wide Receivers Northern Arizona Offensive Coordinator 1985 Indianapolis Colts QBs/Quality Control Illinois Running Backs/Wide Receivers VIKINGS COORDINATORS Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell Offensive Coordinator Darrell Bevell enters his 3rd season with the Vikings with 2 Pro Bowlers along the offensive line, the 2007 NFC-leading rusher in the backfi eld, a more experienced quarterback and a new playmaking wide receiver. In 2007, Bevell helped put together the best rushing attack in the NFL as the Vikings averaged yards per game and 5.3 yards per carry. Their 2,634 rushing yards was the highest total in team history while their 22 rushing touchdowns ranked tied for 2nd. The Vikings were led by the rushing tandem of rookie RB Adrian Peterson and RB Chester Taylor, who amassed a combined 2,185 yards on the ground, shattering Daunte Culpepper and Robert Smith s previous highest rushing total by a tandem of 1,991 yards in Against San Diego, Peterson broke the NFL single-game rushing record when he gained 296 yards on the ground. The Vikings also sent 4 players from the offensive side of the ball - Birk, Hutchinson, Peterson, and FB Tony Richardson - to the 2008 Pro Bowl. This offseason, Bevell s offense saw the addition of deep threat WR Bernard Berrian, FB Thomas Tapeh and RB Maurice Hicks. Asst. Head Coach/Def. Coord. Leslie Frazier On the opposite side of the ball, Assistant Head Coach/Defensive Coordinator Leslie Frazier will begin his 2nd season with the Vikings and his 9th season in the NFL. In his fi rst year with Minnesota, Frazier led the team to its 2nd-consecutive #1 ranking against the run, holding opponents to 74.1 yards per game on the ground. The team notched 8 defensive touchdowns and led the league with 6 interceptions returned for scores. The Vikings tied for 9th with 31 takeaways and tied a team record for the most defensive points scored in a season with 50 (8 touchdowns, 1 safety). Prior to joining the Vikings, Frazier won a Super Bowl in 2006 as a member of the Indianapolis Colts staff, coaching defensive backs and serving as a special assistant to Tony Dungy. During that championship season, the Colts defense posted 13 takeaways in the playoffs and allowed only 2 second-half TDs in the 4 postseason games. During the 2008 offseason, Frazier saw his unit add key pieces at defensive end with the trade for Jared Allen, who led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007, and at safety with the signing of free agent Madieu Williams. Frazier now has 3 Pro Bowlers along the defensive line and 4 members of the 2007 Pro Bowl squad. Special Teams Coordinator Paul Ferraro The 2008 season marks Paul Ferraro s 3rd as the Vikings Special Teams Coordinator, his 4th season of NFL coaching and his 27th season of coaching overall. Ferraro s 2007 special teams units, the core of which have returned in 2008, were some of the most successful in team history. The 2007 squad set team records for kickoff return average, the longest kickoff return in team history, the most punts landed inside the 20, and the most 50+ yard punts. The team also converted a pair of onside kicks. Leading the way on special teams in 2007 was LB Heath Farwell, who topped the team in special teams tackles for the 2nd straight season, was voted by his teammates as the Special Teams MVP and was recognized as a Pro Bowl alternate. The Vikings ranked 4th overall in the NFL with a 24.8 kickoff return average, which also ranked as the highest return average in team history, and 6th in the NFL as they held opponents to an average starting fi eld position just beyond the 26-yard line (26.2). WR Aundrae Allison ranked #1 in the NFC and #3 in the NFL with an average of 28.7 yards per kickoff return, while Kluwe shattered his record of 28 punts inside the 20, as he landed 34. 8 ALOHA VIKINGS VIKINGS HONORED WITH PRO BOWL TRIPS The Vikings sent 7 players to the Pro Bowl in RB Adrian Peterson, FB Tony Richardson, G Steve Hutchinson, C Matt Birk, DT Kevin Williams, DT Pat Williams and S Darren Sharper. Only 3 teams - Dallas, New England and San Diego - had more nominations. Vikings rookie RB Adrian Peterson became only the 2 nd rookie running back in Vikings history and the 8 th Vikings RB to be named to the Pro Bowl. Peterson joined only Chuck Foreman in 1973 as rookie running backs to be recognized. Peterson was the 1 st Vikings rookie since Randy Moss in 1998 to go to the Pro Bowl after leading the NFC in rushing with 1,341 yards and tying for 2 nd in the NFL in rushing TDs with 12. He fi nished the the all-star game as the MVP. Paving the way for Peterson s record-breaking season were G Steve Hutchinson and C Matt Birk, who appeared in their 5 th and 6 th Pro Bowls respectively. Birk s 6 th berth in the game tied Vikings legend Mick Tingelhoff for most Pro Bowls by a Vikings center. The only offensive linemen with more Pro Bowl honors as Vikings than Birk and Tingelhoff are Randall McDaniel (11) and Ron Yary (7). Hutchinson made his 5 th consecutive Pro Bowl berth and 2 nd in as many seasons as a Viking. The anchors of the Vikings line helped set team rushing records, including the most rushing yards by a tandem with Peterson and Chester Taylor s 2,158 combined yards. Former Vikings FB Tony Richardson made his 3 rd appearance in the Pro Bowl, having earned trips after the 2003 and 2004 seasons with Kansas City. Richardson and the linemen helped tie a team record with 8 games featuring a 100-yard rusher. Vikings DTs Kevin Williams and Pat Williams, the anchors of the NFL s #1-ranked run defense, made return trips to the Pro Bowl for the 2 nd straight season. Kevin Williams made his 3 rd Pro Bowl appearance in his 5 NFL seasons, following up on trips in 2004 and Pat Williams, in his 3 rd season as a Viking and 11 th in the NFL, made his 2 nd trip to Hawaii. The DT marked only the 2 nd time in team history that a pair of DTs made consecutive trips to the Pro Bowl, joining Gary Larsen and Alan Page in 1969 and Vikings S Darren Sharper returned to Hawaii for the 2 nd time as a Viking and the 4 th time in his 11-year career. Sharper scored his 8 th career TD on an INT return last season and became only the 8 th player in NFL history to eclipse 1,000 career INT return yards in the Vikings win over Chicago (12/17/07). Sharper s 53 career INTs are the most by any active player in the NFL, and he has 17 picks and 3 TDs in his 3 seasons with the Vikings after coming to the team as a free agent from rival Green Bay. In the offseason, the Vikings added Pro Bowl DE Jared Allen via trade with the Kansas City Chiefs. Allen led the NFL with 15.5 sacks in 2007, made his fi rst Pro Bowl appearance and earned his fi rst All-Pro honors. The addition of Allen gives the 2008 Vikings 3 Pro Bowlers across the defensive line and 4 on the defensive side of the ball VIKINGS PRO BOWLERS Player Position Pro Bowl Seasons Matt Birk C 2000, 2001, 2003, 2004, 2006, 2007 Steve Hutchinson G 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2007 Darren Sharper S 2000, 2002, 2005, 2007 Tony Richardson (Not w/team in 08) FB 2003, 2004, 2007 Kevin Williams DT 2004, 2006, 2007 Pat Williams DT 2006, 2007 Adrian Peterson RB 2007 Jared Allen (w/kansas City in 07) DE Individual Stats Jared Allen: 67 tackles, 15.5 sacks, 11 passes defensed, 18 QB hurries. 9 VIKINGS OFFENSIVE TEAM NOTES NFC RUSHING LEADER Despite missing 2 games in the middle of the 2007 season with a knee injury, Vikings 1 st - round draft pick RB Adrian Peterson finished 1st in the NFC and 2nd in the NFL with 1,341 rushing yards on 238 carries. Peterson s rushing total fell only 133 yards short of San Diego RB LaDainian Tomlinson, who rushed for 1,474 yards on 315 carries, even though Peterson carried the ball 77 fewer times. Peterson s 5.6-yardsper-carry average also ranked 2nd in the league and was the highest average in Vikings history, and his 12 rushing TDs ranked tied for 2nd in the NFL. In Week 9 vs. San Diego, Peterson set an NFL record for the most rushing yards in a single game when he broke loose for 296 yards on the ground against the Chargers. He also tied a team record with his 3 rushing TDs, only the 11th time it had happened in team history, with the last time coming at Chicago earlier this season as Peterson rushed for 224 yards and 3 TDs. (On the difference between rookie training camp and 2008 training camp) It is a lot different. You come in more comfortable, more relaxed, knowing the offense. It makes the game a little easier for me. I came in last year not knowing anything, so it is defi nitely a different year this year. (On the addition of Bernard Berrian and the development of Tarvaris Jackson and Sidney Rice) During the OTAs and mini-camps in the offseason, those guys took steps forward, so they will continue to take those steps here in training camp. Bernard Berrian is a tremendous athlete. He has the speed as you guys have seen with his play (at training camp). But we are going to take it one day at a time and keep moving forward.

The Vikings are one of the few NFL franchises without a stadium solution but remain determined to collaborate with the State Legislature, the Governor and local leaders to resolve this issue. With the team s Metrodome lease set to expire in 2011 and costs increasing $50 million with each year of delay, 2009 is the critical year to preserve the long-term viability of the Vikings in Minnesota. Working with the Metropolitan Sports Facilities Commission (MSFC), the Vikings are moving forward on a public-private partnership that will open a new, multi-purpose stadium on the current Metrodome site in the year The two sides will present this stadium development plan to the 2009 Legislature for consideration. The joint proposal will include specifi c stadium design and program elements, a fi nance plan and principles of agreement on how the new facility will be operated and governed, all crucial topics for state leaders to analyze as they work to reach a stadium solution in The economic development proposal will include three critical elements that go beyond hosting Vikings home games: A retractable-roof stadium that will give Minnesotans a state-of-theart venue to be used year-round for high school and amateur sports, trade shows, community and cultural events, as well as national and international happenings. A Winter Garden light rail train station that will serve as a connecting point for the future Central Corridor light rail line and the existing Hiawatha line. This gathering place is integral to the Vikings vision of the overall development and will host indoor/outdoor activities for transit riders, neighborhood residents, downtown workers and stadium attendees. A privately-fi nanced redevelopment of the Downtown East area that will include offi ce buildings, residences, shops and restaurants. This exciting project will create jobs, boost the economy and bring a renewed energy to this area of Minneapolis. 21 FROM THE HEAD COACH MONDAY, AUGUST 4, 2008 Head Coach Brad Childress We have representatives here from the Northern Sun Conference and I think it s great that we have 14 representatives here. I just saw a couple of guys from St. Cloud, the commissioner, the athletic directors and the players out here. I see one of the guys I used to coach out at Northern Arizona right there, Brad Selem. He was a quarterback for me, so it is great to see them out here. While we have been at it for a little while, they are just starting to get cranked up. There are some excited looking guys. I know they appreciate the fact that they got to see a little bit of hitting going on today. I just told somebody that we did not have a taffy pull today; we had to set our pads a little bit. We welcome them. They are going to be up here right after I am done, so you guys have to make it quick. Good work today, just situational. We went and scrimmaged that backed up that we had the other night. It really kind of loses its merit when you keep it high and hard. We got back into goal line situations with 2nd and 3 on the 3 and no going on 4th down. Then we got in a couple short yardage situations. Another thing we did was we jumped in and gave them a sudden change opportunity. I always like in sudden change when the bell goes off at the fire station, guys don t roll out of bed and say, Man I can t believe that. No, it is a get your helmet, you can t feel sorry for yourself, let s go, out on the field, defend the grass. So we put them out on the 30-yard line and the most you could have was none plays going in. Defensively, obviously you want to get a stop, try and hold them to three (points). I saw Jared Allen make a nice play on 1st down, first defense got off. First offense, I think, went down there and turned it over in the red zone. But great teaching stuff and you can t simulate that. They didn t know it was coming, but they got after it when we asked them to. Q: Can you talk about Brian Robison and Gus Frerotte not practicing today? A: He is up seeing a doctor up in the Twin Cities. All I have to tell you right now is that they are looking at his leg. Gus (Frerotte) we gave, he had a birthday the other day. By the way, quarterbacks, horrifi c singers. We made them stand up in the position groups today and sing. The linebackers, it was E.J. s birthday as well the other night. Complete monotone, those guys are stealing if they think they can sing for a living. They don t want to quit their day jobs. Q: How has Ben Leber looked now that he is comfortable? A: Ben has done a tremendous job simulating everything we are asking him to do. He can put his hand down and rush off the edge; he is a smart football player. It is hard to play over a tight end and play the guy in coverage. He is a very good blitzer. He is having a very nice camp here. Q: How is Bobby Wade doing? A: Bobby Wade has shown up here the last couple times he has been out. Saturday night he did some good things. Sidney was down with that virus and you saw him show up again today here. That two-a-day pounding on his knee shows up, but you know what, he is pushing through it just like all of our guys are pushing through it. The big thing is getting that push mentally. Q: Do you have any reaction to Favre being back in camp? A: I really don t. I ve seen it on T.V. and I haven t had a lot of discretionary time to sit and watch television or surf the internet. Q: Any comment to the alleged phone calls? A: My comment would be that I think that is the same journalist that wrote that there was a cell phone involved that the Packers gave him. Q: So there was no contact? A: Not to my knowledge. Bob showed me that article last night at 11:00. I was in a personnel meeting with Rick (Spielman) and George Payton until 11:00 with the coaches. I have a pretty good idea how that went down, but you can shape the environment however you want, one way or the other. We have not had any contact with him. Q: Is there any indication that the tampering charges are resolved? A: I haven t heard anything. I think that they have everything from us that they need. Q: Have they given you a time frame? A: No, but nor do I expect one. He has a lot of different things on his plate, whether it is the Hall of Fame or dealing with other issues. He will get back to me when he needs too. Q: Are guys starting to get excited with the preseason game coming up this Friday? A: Well excited might be a little strong. But they ramp up whether they go into a stadium on a Saturday night with the lights on. They will ramp up when they get there. But the big thing is you don t want to peak too early. The excitement will be there Friday night and it does not need to be there a minute before Friday night. Q: With Gus Frerotte out, it looked like John David Booty was taking all of the snaps with the #2 unit. Has he moved ahead of Brooks Bollinger on the depth chart? A: Not at all; it s just a matter of when Gus gets a day off you want to accelerate guys that you usually do not get a chance to see. He got minimal snaps the other night against Kansas City, so we just want to see him in some of that situational football, 3rd-and-long, going into the goal line, handling the ball in short yardage. It was great for us to be able to evaluate him. Q: Do you have any idea how long the starters will go on Friday? A: I just gave the coaches where I wanted them. We fi ll out a grid so we know how much everybody is going to play. I have it set in my mind, but I will probably give that to you later in the week. Q: Has Chad Greenway started to come around? A: Well I think Fred has said it, everything has started to slow down for him. The gears aren t grinding at all and as I have said over and over, all of the 2nd year players, whether it is (Visanthe) Shiancoe, whether it is Chad Greenway, I know it s his third year in but really it s his second year being out PS1 -- SEAHAWKS AT VIKINGS -- 21
