GILLILAND vs CONQUE This is the first time Brett Gilliland has faced a Clint Conque coached team as a head coach. Conque faced the Tigers twice while the head coach at Central Arkansas, defeating the Tigers in both 2002 and 2003 when Gilliland was the UWA quarterback. TIGERS, LUMBERJACKS ON ESPN3 Saturday s football game at Stephen F. Austin will be the first of four West Alabama games to be broadcast on ESPN3 this season. West Alabama was 2-1 in games played on ESPN3 last season. The remaining 2016 UWA games on ESPN3 include Sept. 24 vs North Alabama, Oct. 15 at West Georgia and Nov. 5 at home against Valdosta State. The game will be available online at ESPN3.com and through the WatchESPN app for mobile devices and portable electronics. PRESEASON HONORS FOR FELIX Tiger strong safety Felix Woods is the lone UWA player to be voted by league coaches as a preseason All-Gulf South Conference performer. A senior from Lakeland, Florida, Woods is the leading returning tackler for the Tigers. The 2015 Weber State transfer recorded 45 tackles last year, 21 solo. He also recorded 3.5 sacks for minus 30 yards. QUICK STARTS Receiver Donta Armstrong and running back Lakendric Thomas both got off to fast statistical starts in the setback at North Greenville. Armstrong had 11 receptions for 137 yards and a TD. Thomas carried 18 times for 124 yards. He was not stopped for a loss in the opener. 3 GILLILAND 7-2 IN SEPTEMBER Since returning to his alma mater as head coach prior to the 2014 season, Brett Gilliland has put together a 7-2 record in games played in the month of September. The only losses are to FCS power Jacksonville State in 2014 and last week at North Greenville, TIGERS vs. FCS The Tigers are 0-1 against NCAA Football Championship Series teams (formerly 1AA) under Brett Gilliland, losing in the third game of the 2014 season at Jacksonville State. The Tigers are 0-14 overall against FCS teams. LAST WEEK Ashton Heard ran for 179 yards, but it was backup Tracy Scott who drove the dagger into UWA s heart, scoring on a 10-yard touchdown run with 1:40 left to hand North Greenville to a win. Tiger QB Austin Grammer completed 29-of-42 passes for 266 yards and two touchdowns. He also ran for 32 yards and a touchdown despite getting sacked three times for minus 24 yards. Donta Armstrong finished with 11 receptions for 137 yards. Se Quan Steele, Jordan Jones and Hutchinson had six tackles each to lead West Alabama. Steele forced a fumble. Darius Ellis had UWA s only sack. VERSUS NON CONFERENCE FOES West Alabama went undefeated in non-conference play in 2015 and are 7-3 in non-conference games under Brett Gilliland. The Tigers are 3-3 in nonconference road games under Gilliland. 4 HEAD COACH BRETT GILLILAND Record setting quarterback and University of West Alabama Athletic Hall of Fame member Brett Gilliland came home on Dec. 9, 2013 to be named the 21st head football coach at his alma mater. Now entering his third season as the Tigers head coach, Gilliland returned to West Alabama from Kennesaw State, where he was coaching quarterbacks. Previous coaching stops include Georgia Tech and Georgia Southern. Gilliland led the Tigers to a 5-6 record in 2014, his first year back at his alma mater and his first season as a collegiate head coach. He followed the initial campaign with a 7-4 record in year two. Following his playing days at UWA, Gilliland began his coaching career as a graduate assistant at Georgia Tech before moving on to the offensive staff Georgia Southern. While at Georgia Tech, Gilliland was a part of three Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC) Coastal Division Championships (2006, 2008 and 2009). In 2007, Gilliland worked with Yellow Jacket quarterbacks after assisting with the receiving corps in 2006, including Biletnikoff Award winner and current Detroit Lions star Calvin Johnson. Gilliland coached the running backs for two seasons at Tech, a group that included Doak Walker semi-finalist Jonathan Dwyer. Dwyer was the ACC rushing leader and player of the year in In three seasons at Georgia Southern, Gilliland worked with the running backs (2010), tight ends and tackles (2011) and wide receivers (2012). He took over the recruiting coordinator duties following the 2011 season. With Gilliland on staff, Georgia Southern posted a (.721) overall record, won two Southern Conference titles (2011, 2012) and made three consecutivefcs semifinal appearances. Gilliland was a regional finalist for the Harlon Hill trophy in He earned all-region recognition from the Football Gazette (2002). He concluded his career as the Tigers single-season (3,213) and career passing yards (6,689) record holder. In 2012, he was inducted into the UWA Athletic Hall of Fame. At the conclusion of his playing career, Gilliland had posted four of the top 10 single game passing performances in school history, including a then school-record 470 yards against Valdosta State in A two-time member of the All-Gulf South Conference Academic list, he was a two-time winner of the Asa Green Scholar-Athlete Award, an award presented for the highest grade-point average on the football team. A 2003 College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-District IV selection, he also was honored twice with a Gulf South Conference Top Eight award before graduating magna cum laude in Gilliland and his wife, Amanda, are the parents of a son, Rece (4), and an infant daughter, Ella Kate. His father, Ronnie, was a member of the UWA 1971 National Championship Football team.
