1 STANFORD CARDINAL QUICK FACTS Location: Stanford, Calif Founded: 1891 Enrollment: 13,198 Nickname: Cardinal Colors: Cardinal & White President: John Hennessy Athletics Director: Bob Bowlsby Football Coach: Jim Harbaugh Record at Stanford: 9-15 (.375), 2 years Career Record: (.644), 5 years FB SID: Jim Young ( /jfyoung@stanford.edu) Website: SID Staff: Niall Adler (FB), Ricky Brackett, Aaron Juarez, Dave Kiefer, Brian Risso Stadium: Stanford Stadium (50,000 - Grass) Press Box Phone: Offense: Multiple Defense: 4-3 First Year of Football: 1891 All-Time Record: All-Time Pac-10 Record: National Championships: 2 (1926, 1940) RB Toby Gerhart A QUICK LOOK AT THE CARDINAL OFFENSE: Stanford will look to make continued improvement in year three of the Jim Harbaugh regime on The Farm, with the next step being a trip to a bowl game. Eight starters return to the Cardinal offensive unit led by talented RB Toby Gerhart. Stanford finished second in the Pac-10 in rushing last year at just a tick under 200 yards per games (199.6) with Gerhart leading the way. He earned second-team All-Pac-10 honors after rushing for a school-record 1,136 yards and 15 TDs. Three starters return along the offensive line, led by OT Chris Marinelli and OG Andrew Phillips. The Cardinal is looking to build depth at the wide receiver position and will count on sophomore Chris Owusu to take on a larger role. DEFENSE: Stanford returns eight starters on defense, but must replace a handfull of key players. The strength of the defensive unit should be up front with a deep group of talented linemen returning, including DEs Erik Lorig and Tom Keiser and DTs Sione Fua, Brian Bulcke and Ekom Udofia. Veteran OLB Clinton Snyder is the leader at linebacker. THE SCHEDULE: The Cardinal have seven home games, but must open the season with two on the road. The payoff comes at the end of the year when Stanford closes with four-of-five at home. However, Oregon, USC, California and Notre Dame are included in that stretch. Non-conference highlights include a long road trip to Wake Forest and a season-ending home game vs. Notre Dame SCHEDULE (7 home, 5 away) Sept. 5 at Washington State Stanford leads, Sept. 12 at Wake Forest First meeting Sept. 19 San Jose State Stanford leads, Sept. 26 Washington Washington leads, Oct. 3 UCLA UCLA leads, Oct. 10 at Oregon State Stanford leads, Oct. 17 at Arizona Arizona leads, Oct. 24 Arizona State Arizona State leads, 16-9 Nov. 7 Oregon Stanford leads, Nov. 14 at USC USC leads, Nov. 21 California Stanford leads, Nov. 28 Notre Dame Notre Dame leads, RESULTS (5-7, 4-5 Pac-10/T6th) W Oregon State L at Arizona State L at TCU W San Jose State W at Washington L at Notre Dame W Arizona L at UCLA W 58-0 Washington State L at Oregon L USC L at California 16

QB Kevin Craft returns, but will face competition for the starting job from the likes of Kevin Prince and Richard Brehaut. Wideouts Terrence Austin and Taylor Embree return to form a good duo outside, with Austin also a standout on kickoff and punt returns. The offensive line is an experienced unit that returns six players who started at least five games a year ago. UCLA also boasts one of the nation s premier field goal kickers in Kai Forbath, who connected on 19-of-22 three-pointers last season. DEFENSE: UCLA returns seven starters on the defensive side of the ball, including some standouts that should make this unit formidable in the Pac-10. Up front, DT Brian Price is a first-team All-Pac-10 selection and he is joined by DE Korey Bosworth, the Bruin sack leader last year. LB Reggie Carter was a second-team All-Pac-10 performer last year and is the heart of the Bruin defense. Sophomore OLB Akeem Ayers looks like a budding star. The secondary is led by veteran CB Alterraun Verner, another second-team All-Pac-10 pick. FS Rahim Moore started as a freshman last year and played well enough to be named honorable mention All-Pac-10. THE SCHEDULE: Six home and six away for the Bruins. The non-conference schedule has San Diego State, at Tennessee and Kansas State, all of which will feature new head coaches. The battle to replace Sanchez will be one of the most closely watched competitions in college football. Junior Mitch Mustain and sophomore Aaron Corp will both get good looks, with senior Garrett Green and incoming freshman Matt Barkley also in the mix. Whoever emerges at quarterback will have plenty of help around him. The Trojans seemingly never-ending supply of tailbacks is intact as veterans Stafon Johnson, Joe McKnight and C.J. Gable each rushed for more than 600 yards last year. Plus do-everything FB Stanley Havili is back. Damian Williams has emerged as a top-flight wide receiver and senior Anthony McCoy is solid at tight end. The entire offensive line returns intact. In fact, the Trojans have seven offensive linemen who have seen significant starting time on the line, led by C Kristofer O Dowd and OG Jeff Byers. DEFENSE: While nine starters return on offense for USC, only three return to a defensive squad that led the nation in scoring defense last year at 9.0 points per game and ranked second in total defense at yards per game. Along the way, SC posted three shutouts. The strength of this year s defense will be in the secondary, which will be led by two-time All- America FS Taylor Mays and two-year senior starter CB Josh Pinkard. Up front, DT Christian Tupou is a returning starter and big things are expected from NT Jurrell Casey. While most of the eyes will be focused on the battle for the starting quarterback position, perhaps just as critical for the Trojans is who will line up at linebacker, replacing big shoes of the likes of departed backers Rey Maualuga and Brian Cushing. THE SCHEDULE: The Trojans always take on quality non-conference opponents and this year is no exception with road games at Ohio State and Notre Dame. Four of the first six games are on the road, which could be a factor with a new quarterback lined up under center. Oregon and California are on the Conference road slate. On the other end, the final three regular season games come at home SCHEDULE (6 home, 6 away) Sept. 5 San Jose State First meeting Sept. 12 at Ohio State USC leads, Sept. 19 at Washington USC leads, Sept. 26 Washington State USC leads, Oct. 3 at California USC leads, Oct. 17 at Notre Dame Notre Dame leads, Oct. 24 Oregon State USC leads, Oct. 31 at Oregon USC leads, Nov. 7 at Arizona State USC leads, 16-9 Nov. 14 Stanford USC leads, Nov. 28 UCLA USC leads, Dec. 5 Arizona USC leads, RESULTS (12-1, 8-1 Pac-10/1st) W 52-7 at Virginia W 35-3 Ohio State L at Oregon State W Oregon W 28-0 Arizona State W 69-0 at Washington State W at Arizona W 56-0 Washington W 17-3 California W at Stanford W 38-3 Notre Dame W 28-7 at UCLA W Penn State (Rose Bowl) 20

(Years): 4 (1960, 1984, 1990, 1991) DE Daniel Te o-nesheim A QUICK LOOK AT THE HUSKIES OFFENSE: New head coach Steve Sarkisian greets eight returning starters back on offense, and that does not count QB Jake Locker, the leader of the Huskies. Locker injured his thumb in the fourth game of last season and with him out of the lineup, the Huskies averaged only 10 points per game. Sarkisian looks to replace the spread option with a pro-style offense, so Locker figures to be a pass-first quarterback with a lot fewer planned running plays. One weapon available to Locker will be WR D Andre Goodwin, who blossomed last year in leading the Huskies in receiving with 60 catches for 692 yards. That makes him the leading returning receiver in the Pac-10 this season. DEFENSE: The Huskies return a whopping 10 starters on defense and hope this unit will be much improved with experience. The standout up front is DE Daniel Te o-nesheim, a second-team All-Pac-10 selection last year who has led the Huskies in quarterback sacks in each of the last two seasons. OLB Mason Foster led both UW and the Conference in tackles last year and S Nate Williams anchors the secondary. THE SCHEDULE: The good news is new coach Steve Sarkisian opens the season with three straight home games. The bad news is LSU and USC are among that opening trio. It s an attractive home schedule as rivals Oregon and Washington State come to Husky Stadium, as do California and Arizona SCHEDULE (7 home, 5 away) Sept. 5 LSU LSU leads, 1-0 Sep. 12 Idaho Washington leads, Sep. 19 USC USC leads, Sep. 26 at Stanford Washington leads, Oct. 3 at Notre Dame Notre Dame leads, 8-0 Oct. 10 Arizona Washington leads, Oct. 17 at Arizona State Washington leads, Oct. 24 Oregon Washington leads, Nov. 7 at UCLA UCLA leads, Nov. 14 at Oregon State Washington leads, Nov. 28 Washington State Washington leads, Dec. 5 California Washington leads, RESULTS (0-12, 0-9 Pac-10/10th) L at Oregon L BYU L Oklahoma L Stanford L at Arizona L Oregon State L 7-33 Notre Dame L 0-56 at USC L Arizona State L 7-27 UCLA L at Washington State L 7-48 at California 22

Among the things Wulff hoped to install was a no-huddle offense, but a series of injuries to Cougar quarterbacks forced Wulff to remove that package from the WSU arsenal. It should be revived in 2009 and eight returning starters on offense give the Cougs optimism for an improved offensive unit. WSU could not keep its quarterbacks healthy last year and the hope is that will not be the case in Senior Kevin Lopina had eight starts last season and gets first look as the starter going into this season. He will be challenged by Marshall Lobbestael, who showed promise in three starts as a freshman last year. Sophomore QB J.T. Levenseller also returns and the Cougs top four rushers return, led by veteran RB Dwight Tardy and sophomore RB Logwone Mitz. WR Jeshua Anderson emerged as a receiving threat last year. WSU hopes the offensive line will be a strength as four starters return led by senior C Kenny Alfred. DEFENSE: The Cougars need to shore up a defense that allowed 43.8 points and 443 yards per game last year. Replacements must be found for some departed standouts on the line and at linebacker. The strength of the unit should be in the backfield where veteran safeties Xavier Hicks and Chima Nwachukwu return to starting duty. THE SCHEDULE: In addition to its annual non-conference game at Seattle s Qwest Field (vs. Hawai i this year), Washington State takes on Notre Dame in a neutral site game at San Antonio. Pac-10 play finds the Cougars on the road for USC, Oregon, California and Washington SCHEDULE (6 home, 5 away, 1 neutral) Sept. 5 Stanford Stanford leads, Sep. 12 Hawai i (Seattle, Wash.)
