11 S T A N F O R D F O O T B A L L GAME 1 GAME 2 Stanford 36, Oregon State 28 Aug. 28, 2008 Stanford Stadium Stanford, CA Arizona State 41, Stanford 17 Sept. 6, 2008 Sun Devil Stadium Tempe, AZ STANFORD, Calif.--Toby Gerhart rushed for a career-high 147 yards and scored two touchdowns to pace Stanford to a victory over Oregon State in the season-opener for both teams. The win gave the Cardinal its fi rst win in a home-opener since a 43-3 rout of San Jose State in 2004 and also snapped a two-game losing streak to the Beavers. Gerhart s rushing total was the 27th highest in school history and marked the highest total ever recorded by a Stanford back in a season-opening game. Stanford rushed for 210 yards on 48 carries while holding the Beaver running game to just 86 yards on 28 rush attempts. However, the Beavers passing game accounted for 404 of their 490 yards in total offense, as Lyle Moevao completed 34-of-54 passes with three touchdowns, including two to Sammie Stroughter. Stanford built a lead in the fourth quarter after Bo McNally picked off a Moevao pass and returned it 34 yards for a touchdown. It was McNally s second career interception return for a touchdown (at Washington, 2006). Oregon State took just 2:07 to drive 97 yards on nine plays to cut the lead to 36-28, when Moevao hooked up with Stroughter on a three-yard pass. Oregon State got the ball back with 1:31 left and drove to the Stanford 16 yard line. On a third and fi ve play, Moevao completed a pass to Darrell Catchings, but fumbled through the end zone after absorbing a hit by Stanford s Taylor Skaufel, resulting in a touchback. Carpenter was as hot as the game time temperature of 103 degrees, as he completed passes to nine different receivers. Michael Jones had six catches for 79 yards and one touchdown, while Kerry Taylor and Kyle Williams each caught fi ve passes for 92 and 44 yards, respectively. Arizona State scored on four of its fi ve possessions in the fi rst half to build a lead at halftime. After a 23-yard fi eld goal by Thomas Weber gave the Sun Devils an early 3-0 lead, Stanford scored on its fi rst possession, as Toby Gerhart capped a nine play, 80-yard drive with a fi ve yard touchdown run. Arizona State marched deep into Stanford territory on its next possession but had to settle for another Weber fi eld goal from 21 yards to cut the lead to 7-6. On the Sun Devils next possession, Carpenter connected to Michael Jones on an 11-yard touchdown pass to cap a seven play, 55-yard drive to give Arizona State a lead it would not relinquish, A 28-yard fi eld goal by Stanford s Aaron Zagory cut the lead to with 0:52 left in the half, however, the Sun Devils would pad their lead to just before intermission, as Carpenter completed a 45-yard pass to Kerry Taylor for a touchdown. After Gerald Munns intercepted a Tavita Pritchard pass on Stanford s fi rst possession of the second half, the Sun Devils took only four plays to score on a drive that started on the Cardinal 34-yard line, as Dimitri Nance carried over from the one. Stanford cut the lead to when Gerhart scored his second touchdown of the night and his fourth of the season on a one-yard plunge to cap a six play, 63-yard drive.
