4 4 Brief History of Nottingham City Netball Club Nottingham City Netball Club was formed in Prior to then it was known as Meridian, a company team established in Before this is was J.B. Lewis inaugurated in The above mentioned, Nottingham based companies, had a thriving Sports and Social Club. These companies had 20 work rooms with a predominately female workforce and each room has its own netball team. These 20 teams played each other throughout the year and were presented with a large winner s shield at the end. When the company went into liquidation, and Nottingham City Netball Club was formed, the shield was given to our present Chair to use for the club. The club committee decided it was important to reward and recognise the support and efforts of our volunteers and to use the trophy as an annual award for volunteers. It is awarded every year at our highly esteemed Junior Tournament, along with an individual trophy, so we can demonstrate to younger netballers and supporters how much we value our volunteers and that we cannot survive without them. We were the first club in Nottinghamshire to introduce Juniors to club netball and we had the youngest umpire at aged 11 years. We have players represent England School girls and participate in the Regional Talent and Nottinghamshire Academy. In 2008 Nottingham City Netball Club gained their Gold CAPS award. 5 Club Officials 5.1 Executive Committee Chair Vice Chair Secretary Treasurer (Seniors) Treasurer (Juniors) Head Coach Junior Coordinator Junior Representative Fixtures Secretary Umpiring Secretary Fundraising Officer Volunteer Coordinator Safeguarding Officer Player Representative Pauline Shipman Victoria Thornton Pauline Shipman Maureen Turton Karen Bowers Victoria Thornton Michelle Turgoose Bella Bailey Pauline Shipman Pam Weatherby Fiona Madeley Merle Laur Karen Bowers Fiona Madeley The Executive Committee hold regular meetings throughout the season. 5.2 Player Representative Your player representative is Fiona Madeley. A copy of which can be found on our website under Guidelines. We also have a Safeguarding Officer, Karen Bowers. 23 Selection Policy One of the great strengths of NCNC is our ability to offer competitive match play at many different levels. Selections for match play can be made for a variety of reasons apart from just winning. Junior players may be selected for senior matches in order to gain experience, and players may be rotated during a match in order to test different combinations. Following selection in September, successful players will be accepted into one or more squads. Each squad has a nominated Coach and Team Manager. The Coach s primary responsibility is the selection and performance of their squad. The Manager s primary responsibility is to assist the Coach with all other administrative matters of running their squad. Selection of a player into a particular squad does not automatically mean that the player will be selected for match play. The selection of the playing squad for a particular match rests solely on the decisions of the coaching team, directed by Head Coach Pauline Shipman. Any suggestions, comments or concerns related to squad or match play selection should be directed to the team coach in the first instance. Players are expected to attend all training sessions, and all matches for which they are selected. If for any reason a player is not able to attend a training session or a match for which she is selected, she must contact her coach as soon as possible. If a player knows in advance that she will not be available for selection (e.g. school field trip), she must let her coach know as far in advance as possible. Players who do not attend training regularly, or who break the Code of Conduct of the club, may rule themselves out of selection. 24 Use of Images Consent for Players From time to time, we may wish to take photographs/videos of members of NCNC, for the purposes of: publicity for NCNC (local paper, England Netball Magazine, NCNC website etc); publicity of an event, or to be used as a visual aid for the players/coaches when analysing technique or skills. In order to do this, we need your permission. When a player registers to play for NCNC, they must complete a NCNC Membership Registration Form. This form includes a request for permission to use images of players as outlined above. Players or parents/carers (for players under the age of 18) must complete this form and agree/decline permission Page 15 of 16

16 25 Use of Social Media We expect our members and volunteers not use social media to bring the game of netball into disrepute or make an inappropriate comment about an athlete, coach, official, volunteer or member of England Netball, the Region or Notts Netball Association Committee. 26 Nutrition for Netball Several components go towards making you the best netball player you can be, from skills, tactics, fitness and psychology. Nutrition is often neglected, so here is a brief guide to optimum nutrition for match day. Before the Match The time of a game can depend on what you eat. Ideally, have a good breakfast (e.g. wholegrain cereal or fruit) and eat your last meal no later than 90 minutes before warming up try to have complex carbohydrates (e.g. pasta with tomato sauce) as they provide good energy stores which breakdown slowly and last throughout a match. During the Match If you need to eat during a game, chose something light (e.g. fruit/muesli bar). Post-Match What you eat post exercise is as important as before. The 2-hour window after exercise is the best time. If you don t like eating much straight after playing, eat snacks which are a good source of fuel (e.g. raisins or low-fat biscuits) and then a high carb meal within 2 hours. Fluids Consuming enough appropriate fluids is essential for performance, recovery & general health. You should drink regularly during the day and even more so before, during and after playing. Water is the best option. Some sports drinks offer a little more, although whether they help you is debatable. Ideally you should consume 500ml to 1litre of fluid in the hours before exercise, the same during and the same afterwards. This may sound a lot and may be something you have to build up to. Weather is a big factor on how much is required, and remember, some foods contain large amounts of water (e.g. fruit & vegetables are about 75-90% water). The fluid should be cool not warm, as this means quicker movement of the fluid from the stomach. The above is great for match days but combining it with eating a good well-balanced diet during the rest of the week will have even more effect. The most important thing is to find your own routine, and this will take time and practise. Never try something new in your nutrition routine on a match day, always try it in training to see if it works for you. Page 16 of 16
