9 The Blue Devil The name used for the Duke athletic teams was derived from the French Blue Devils, a crack Alpine corps, which wore a striking blue uniform with a blue beret. William H. Lander, assistant editor of The Chronicle, the school newspaper, suggested the name in the spring of 1922 because of the growing dissatisfaction with the nicknames Methodists and the Blue and White. Beginning with the first issue of the Chronicle, coeditors Lander and Mike Bradshaw insisted that all teams be referred to as the Blue Devils in the newspaper. The university news bureau did not pick up on the name that year and the cheerleaders did not use it. But through sheer repetition, it eventually caught on as the nickname for all of Duke s sports teams. Head Coach Jay Lapidus Head coach Jay Lapidus, formerly ATP world ranked in the Top 40 and No. 1ranked as a collegiate player, has led the Blue Devils to 11 ACC Championships and 16 consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances. Lapidus is a sixtime ACC Coach of the Year honoree and has garnered ITA Region II Coach of the Year accolades on five occassions. In his 17 seasons atop the Duke men s tennis program, Lapidus has guided the Blue Devils to an overall record of , including an ACC regular season ledger of Duke Tennis The words ACC Championship and NCAA Appearance have become synonymous with Blue Devil men s tennis. Around the halls of Duke University, an ACC Men s Tennis Championship has become something of an annual event. Those championships have led to 16 total NCAA Tournament appearances, including six quarterfinal showings in 1993, 94, 97, 99, 00 and 01. 10 Over the past decade, Duke University has invested over $25 million to make its athletic facilities among the finest in the nation. This commitment is evident in the changes instituted directly for the men s tennis team. Duke Athletic Director Joe Alleva continues to lead the way in providing Duke with top facilities to help studentathletes stay in peak condition. Originally completed in the summer of 1987, the Duke Tennis Stadium was renovated into the Ambler Tennis Stadium. The facility was funded by Merrill Ambler and features seatbacks for fan seating, a scoreboard, new court surfaces and restrooms. In addition to the fine outdoor courts, the Duke athletic department completed the Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center in the winter of. Named after Karl and Alice Sheffield, the facility features six courts, offices for the coaches, a hall of fame room and locker rooms. It was awarded the United States Tennis Association Outstanding Tennis Facility on February 25,. The Sheffield Indoor Tennis Center is only the third tennis center in North Carolina to receive the award since it began in The modern training room provides all of the equipment and services necessary to keep the Duke men s tennis team healthy and in action. The trainer s office is off the main training area, allowing the players convenient access to this care. The weight room is another extensive area, directed by strength coordinator Anne Tamporello. The 3,300 squarefoot weight room has over three tons of free weights along with Nautilus, HydraGym and Universal stations. Debuting in the spring of 1999, the SchwartzButters Athletic Center was completed. It houses the men s & women s basketball offices, the new Duke Hall of Fame, basketball weight room, the Campbell Academic Center and training room facilities. Some of the recent additions to the tennis facilities include a new state of the art Daktronics indoor scoring system. This project, which was installed in the fall of, includes seven wireless scoreboards. There are six individual scoreboards (one mounted behind each court) that provides the player s name as well as the game and set scores. The main scoreboard shows the dual match score and scores of all six courts. Also the six main outdoor courts have been resurfaced in the US Open (Duke) blue color. The men s squad owns a home record of in Lapidus 17 years. In the spring of 2002, Duke renamed its outdoor tennis facility the Ambler Tennis Stadium in the name of longtime supporter Merrill Ambler. That record includes two perfect 80 seasons in both 1993 and 1995, an undefeated 90 record in 1999 and a schoolrecord 110 ledger in. 11 The commitment to excellence in academics is obvious in all of Duke s sports programs. All of the Blue Devil teams have graduation rates near 100 percent every year, including men s tennis which has a 100percent graduation rate under head coach Jay Lapidus. The Duke administration and the athletics department both embrace the philosophy that receiving a meaningful degree is the primary goal of attending college. As a result, Duke has compiled one of the nation s most impressive reputations for its dedication to excellence on and off the field. Duke has a fulltime Director of Academic Support in Dr. Chris Kennedy, who helps male athletes with course selection and monitors their progress toward graduation. He also oversees the tutoring program, which is available to all athletes who desire extra help. Studentathletes choosing Duke get the best of both worlds when it comes to playing sports and receiving a quality education. The value of Duke s commitment to its athletes can be seen in the careers that many of them move on to after college. They are doctors, lawyers and engineers. Some go directly into the job market, while others head to graduate school. Whatever the choice, the Duke degree is an invaluable commodity. That s why choosing a college is not just a fouryear decision but a lifetime choice. ACC Honor Roll Every year, the Atlantic Coast Conference honors those studentathletes who the league feels are deserving of recognition for outstanding academic accomplishments, forming the ACC Honor Roll. Now past its 50th year, the honor roll is comprised of those studentathletes who participated in a varsitylevel sport and registered a grade point average of 3.0 or better for the full academic year. The Duke men s tennis program has received 237 selections to the ACC Honor Roll in its 51year history. There have been five or more selections in 24 different seasons, including the last 14 years and in 19 of the past 21 seasons. There have been 15 players who have been chosen to the ACC Honor Roll four times. In 07, Duke led the league in total selections for the 19th straight year, placing 394 on the list, including a league best five men s tennis players. The Blue Devils placed 32 more student athletes on last year s ACC Honor Roll than the previous year.
