ADDITIONAL CAPITALS NOTES Ovechtrick- In the Capitals home opener against the Montreal Canadiens, Alex Ovechkin recorded a hat trick for the second-straight game to lead the Capitals to a 6- win. Ovechkin became the first player to open the season with two straight hat tricks in years (Cy Denneny, Ottawa Senators, 97; Reg Noble, Toronto Arenas, 97; Joe Malone, Montreal Canadiens, 97). Ovechkin's hat trick came in the first period and marked his second-straight game scoring three goals in a single period. In the season opener against the Ottawa Senators on Oct. 5, Ovechkin recorded a hat trick in the third period. That makes Ovechkin the third player in NHL history to record two consecutive three-goal periods in two games and the first since 98 (Rick Martin, Buffalo Sabres, 975; Darryl Sittler, Toronto Maple Leafs, 98). The third goal marked Ovechkin's 9th -career hat trick. That ties him with Peter Bondra for the most in franchise history. Ovechkin's 9th hat trick ranks 6th on the all-time list, tied with Gordie Howe, Mark Messier, Dino Ciccarelli and Bondra. Ovechkin also recorded a fourth goal in the second period, his fourth-career four-goal game and his first since Dec., 3 (vs. Tampa Bay Lightning). Successful Joey - Australian-national Nathan Walker became the first Australian to play in the NHL when he took the ice against the Montreal Canadiens on Oct. 7, scoring a goal in his NHL debut. The Sydney, Australia, native became the first Australian drafted to the NHL after Washington selected him in the third round, 89th overall, in the 4 NHL Draft. The rookie has represented Australia at the IIHF World Championship Division II tournament and at the World Championship Division Group B tournament. Walker registered 3 points (g, a) in 58 games with the Hershey Bears (AHL) during the 6-7 season. In the 5-6 season, Walker was named Hershey's 6 Man of the Year, Unsung Hero and Most Improved Player. Setting The Standard - Since the 4-5 season, the Capitals have the most wins (58) and the most points (344) and have won the Presidents' Trophy as the team with the NHL's best record each of the last two seasons.
