1 Timekeeper Guidelines GAME TIME Four 10-minute periods. Start timer when official blows whistle to start quarter. Only stop the clock when OFFICIAL signals (for timeout or for injury) the clock does not stop when the coach calls time out, the clock stops when the official tells you to stop it. DO NOT stop game clock for penalties. HORN Sound horn at end of each period Never sound horn when ball is in play except at the end of a period. Sound the horn twice if a coach makes a request for a double horn, if a player leaves early from a penalty, or if you need help from the officials (during the next dead ball). END OF PERIOD Notify officials verbally when there is 2:00 left on the clock. Notify when there is 20 seconds left, then count down loudly from 10, sounding horn at zero. One minute in between the 1 st and 2 nd period and between the 3 rd and 4 th period. Five minutes at half time, but can be shorter if both teams are ready to play. SIGNALING and TIMING OF PENALTIES Official signals team, number, foul and time to be served. A T formed with the arms indicates a 30-second technical foul. Hands clapped over-head means penalty is non-releasable (NR). Beginning in 2014 all penalties are served as the time given by the referee, no adjustment for running time will be made. PENALTIES WRITE DOWN the player s team color and number, the length of the penalty, the game time the player should be released, and an NR if the penalty is non-releasable. Penalty time begins when a) the player has taken a knee in the penalty area and b) the whistle blows to restart play. If a player s penalty expires during a dead ball, then the player is not released until the whistle blows to restart play. If team A scores a goal, ALL releasable penalties for team B are released. If team A scores a goal, penalties for team A are not released. NR penalties always serve the full penalty time no matter how many goals are scored. If a player has multiple penalties, NR penalty time is always served first, regardless of the order of the fouls. Penalty time carries into the next period. Notify player when about 5 seconds is remaining on their time, then tell the player when they are released. Keep players serving penalties at the rear of penalty area until about 5 seconds remain in the penalty. At that time, a substitute may take the place of the penalized player (who must go to the bench when the penalty expires). If a penalty expires during a face-off in which the wing area is left vacant, do not release the player until possession is called.
2 Scorekeeper Guidelines SCOREBOARD Flip the numbers to reflect the score when goal is called by the Ump or Ref (indicated by raising their hands over their head) Keep note of the score on the Official Score Card You do not need to keep track of the players who score the goals HELPING TIMEKEEPER Help write down penalties or help with whatever the timekeeper needs help with if needed OFFICIAL SCORE CARD After each game, please make sure the following is done with each score card: Ensure the score card is completely filled out Each coach has signed and verified the score The ref and umpire have signed and filled out the sportsmanship score After your FIRST game, Text the score of your first game to Example: 8:00 Hansen Field - U11, PL Navy 4 vs Shakopee 2 After your SECOND game, Please bring BOTH completed scorecards to tournament headquarters
3 Items that are nice to know Full Rules Boy s games will follow the rules of the Youth Lacrosse of Minnesota (YLM) Fouling out Notify officials if any player accumulates 5 personal foul penalties (regardless of total penalty time). Notify officials if any player accumulates 2 NR unsportsmanlike conduct penalties. Time outs Each team will be allowed one 2-minute time off per half. Time outs can only be called by a) during play, the team in possession of the ball or b) in a dead ball situation by either team. Mercy Rule At any point there is a four goal lead (4-0, 5-1, 6-2, etc), the team that is behind will be given the ball at the midfield line in lieu of a faceoff after a goal as long as the four goal lead is maintained, unless waived by the coach of the trailing team. This does not affect the face-off to start each period. Uniforms In POOL PLAY, the first team listed is the home team; visiting team is listed second. In BRACKET play, the higher seed is the home team. Home team wears light colored uniform and the visiting team wears dark. The visiting team is responsible for avoiding similar colors. Ties Pool play games (Saturday games) are allowed to end in a tie Overtime (bracket play on Sunday only) Sudden death overtime for bracket play is 5:00 If sudden death does not produce a winner, then play will be moved to braveheart format. Clock malfunctions If clock malfunctions during play, count in your head while someone notifies officials. Sound double horn at next dead ball. Penalties: Releasable vs. Non-Releasable Technical fouls are releasable and include: Tripping, slashing, helmet contact, etc. Personal fouls are non-releasable and include: Unsportsmanlike conduct, no mouth guard, cross checking, illegal body check, unnecessary roughness, etc. Questions or Problems Dan Gratz Kris Gratz Mike Montross Scott Barnard
4 DANGER! Internal HORN is very loud, NEVER direct it at anyone s ear as it may cause injury. Please note LAX Clock must be protected in the rain! ENTERING TOURNEY GAME TIME Press the top SET / CLEAR key and ENTER THE TIME (We play 10:00 quarters.) Note that when you press the set/clear key, the triangle POINTER ICON will be on. Press the Timer s SET / CLEAR key to exit the time entry mode (the triangle will disappear). Press ALL CLOCKS button (lower right) to start and stop. ENTERING PENALTY TIMES Depress the SET / CLEAR key and ENTER THE PENALTY TIME (at time and a half). (Note that the triangle POINTER ICON will be on.) Enter the desired time via the numeric keypad and depress the Timer s SET / CLEAR key to exit the time entry mode (triangle will disappear). If you already have one penalty running, you will need to press START/STOP PENALTY CLOCKS in order to enter the new penalty time. PENALTY TIME GUIDELINES 2014 YLM Rules state that time stated by the Refs is the penalty time (we no longer serve time and a half). Hands clapped over the head means a penalty is non-releasable (they must serve the entire penalty no matter if the other team scores). CLEAR HORN This stops any horn. You ll definitely want to know where this button is, especially if the horn is set to LOUD! If you are NEW, feel free to tell the Refs most of them are very helpful and very understanding! Our coaches will be helpful too. HORN VOL KEY Control the GAME HORN volume. On power up the volume defaults to LOUD and is indicated by the display of the HORN ICON. Pressing this key will toggle the volume between LOUD / LOW and back. POWER UP / DOWN Depressing the POWER key turns on the LAX Clock. When first turned on a short diagnostic will execute to allow verification of the LCD & Horn. All LCD segments & Icons will turn on for 3 seconds. Upon completion all LCDs timers will display 00:00. To turn the LAX Clock off press and hold the POWER key for 2 seconds. START/STOP ALL CLOCKS Use this to start/stop all clocks. (We play running time. The only times you stop the clocks are during a timeout or if ref tells you to). START/STOP PENALTY CLOCKS Use this to start/stop ONLY the penalty clocks. (You will need to do this when there are multiple penalties you should stop the existing penalty when the whistle blows the next one). There are 2 minutes between quarters and 5 minutes at half. Refs usually do a good job at this but it s nice to have the clock countdown as well.
