KESLER SCORES TWICE AS CANUCKS THUMP SENATORS The Canadian Press OTTAWA -- The Vancouver Canucks missed out on giving coach Alain Vigneault his 300th career NHL victory behind the bench the first time they had the chance. They made sure they didn't let another opportunity pass them by Thursday night. Coming off a disappointing 2-0 loss in Montreal two nights earlier that stopped a six-game win streak, the Canucks responded in the second game of their current five-game road trip by thumping the Ottawa Senators 6-2 before a sold-out Scotiabank Place audience of 19,191. "It was a good bounce-back game," said Ryan Kesler, who scored a pair of goals, including the goahead marker with the score tied 1-1 in the second period. Vancouver (9-4-2) then struck for a pair of goals 38 seconds apart in the opening 1:11 of the third period and ran away with the game from there. "It was a good hockey game for 40 minutes," Senators centre Jason Spezza said. "We just gave them too many quality chances." The win allowed Vigneault to reach a milestone against the club he began his NHL coaching career with as an assistant. He's the 39th coach in NHL history to reach that mark. "Obviously, for 300, I'm happy about that, but I'm more happy about the two points we got tonight," Vigneault said. "Our puck management in the first period was obviously questionable and they had some quality chances. I thought we got better in the second and we were obviously really good in the third period tonight, so we'll take the two points and go to Toronto and get ready for that game (Saturday)." Daniel Sedin, who opened the scoring only 22 seconds into the game, Alex Burrows and Tanner Glass each had a goal and an assist and Mario Bliznak added his first NHL goal for Vancouver. Henrik Sedin chipped in with a pair of assists. Despite the quick start by the Canucks, the Senators (8-7-1) tied the game through Peter Regin's first goal of the year minutes later. Even after Kesler scored the go-ahead marker midway through the contest, the Senators were in it until the early moments of the third when Burrows and Kesler, with his second, struck in quick succession. "I thought (in) the first period we were a little sloppy," Kesler said. "We were turning over pucks and really, just at the end of the first, we kind of re-established ourselves by just chipping it in and making it a simple game. "You can look at all our goals -- all of our goals are products of getting the puck in and shooting the puck and driving the net and that's what we did tonight and that's why we won." Roberto Luongo finished with 33 saves in Vancouver's net. Sergei Gonchar had the other goal for the Senators, who had their four-game winning streak snapped. They were coming off Tuesday's 5-2 win over the Atlanta Thrashers, their sixth triumph in the past seven games. Pascal Leclaire, starting for the first time in a month in place of Brian Elliott, made 27 stops. "They've got a lot of big guns and they're a quick transition team, so if you turn the puck over, they're going to come right back at you," Leclaire said. "Their four lines can score and when we made a couple of mistakes, they made us pay and that was the game." Leclaire hadn't played in exactly four weeks since suffering a groin injury early in a game against the Carolina Hurricanes. Elliott has been suffering from what Senators coach Cory Clouston calls "bumps and bruises" and was given the night off after starting 11 straight games. It didn't take the Canucks long to welcome back Leclaire, who fell to on the season. Daniel Alfredsson turned the puck over, allowing Henrik Sedin to set up his brother Daniel Sedin just 22 seconds in. Regin tied it at 3:27 of the first after Luongo stopped a shot by Alex Kovalev and Regin jammed at his pads and forced the puck over the goal-line.
In the second, Kovalev coughed up the puck and allowed Jannik Hansen to find Kesler to the side of Leclaire. Kesler skated out in front and slipped the puck past the netminder to make it 2-1. The Senators came unglued at the start of the third. Burrows, playing his fifth game since returning from off-season shoulder surgery, notched his first of the season by completing a nifty three-way passing play with the Sedin twins just 33 seconds in. Thirty-eight seconds after that, Kesler banged in the rebound of Mikael Samuelsson's shot. "It was a big disappointment," said Regin, who also added an assist. "You kind of die. You get out there and you want to get back into the game and tie the game to at least take it to overtime. Then to give up two right away, it's tough to get back." Glass scored his first of the season and Bliznak, playing his first game of the campaign and third of his career, beat Leclaire from the edge of the crease before Gonchar scored late to close out the scoring. Notes: The Senators begin a four-game road trip Saturday when they travel to Boston to face the Bruins. They also face Philadelphia, Carolina and St. Louis.... Ottawa defenceman Filip Kuba, who's missed the entire season because of a broken leg, is on the verge of returning to the lineup.... Vancouver blue-liner Keith Ballard was a healthy scratch for the second straight game.... The Canucks skipped a game-day practice to attend a Remembrance Day ceremony at the National War Memorial with a crowd estimated at 30,000. Senators Canuckle under By BRUCE GARRIOCH, QMI Agency Pascal Leclaire finally got a chance to return to the Senators net. And, based on Thursday night s effort, he may have to wait a bit before his next start. Making his first start since suffering a groin injury Oct. 14, Leclaire couldn t save the Senators as the club s four-game winning streak came to a halt in a 6-2 loss to the Vancouver Canucks at Scotiabank Place. Things were going their way (in the third) and then it was just boom, boom, boom, said Leclaire, who faced 33 shots. It was hard to come back from that. Being inactive didn t help. There were a couple of things: A few rebounds and stuff like that you can practise as much as you want, but the games are a little different, said Leclaire. We ll go from there. The more you play, the better you feel. You play to win. I ll forget about it and get ready to play another game. Senators coach Cory Clouston didn t blame the goalie. We left him in a tough situation a couple of times, he said. He ll get better. Only Peter Regin and Sergei Gonchar were able to beat Canucks goalie Roberto Luongo on 35 shots. Ryan Kesler scored twice while Daniel Sedin, Alex Burrows, Mario Bliznak and Tanner Glass had a goal each. With Brian Elliott being given a break to rest a minor injury after starting 11 straight, this game came crashing down on Leclaire when the Canucks scored twice in a span of 38 seconds in the third. Leclaire is now winless in four starts this season. They made us pay for our mistakes, said Clouston. With a break here or there, we could have had a one- or two-goal lead going into the third period. We had our chances early, but we gave them an opportunity to get that lead and they made the most of it. For two periods, this was one of the most entertaining games this season. The Senators and Canucks went toe-to-toe with plenty of scoring chances for both sides. The Canucks pulled out to a 2-1 lead as a result of Kesler s sixth goal of the season. You couldn t pinpoint Leclaire on the goal. Kesler was in all alone and showed great patience in getting Leclaire to commit. Luongo stopped Chris Kelly on a breakaway midway through the second and Ryan Shannon alone in front.
Captain Daniel Alfredsson said the club felt good going into the third down 2-1. We felt we had a good chance coming back and winning this game, said Alfredsson. But, we didn t start the third very well. They scored two quick goals and put the game away. Canucks Rick Rypien was busy in the second period. He was KO d by Matt Carkner in a fight, then had a wrestling match with Chris Neil. The Senators and Canucks played a highly entertaining, up-tempo first period. Regin tied it up with his first goal of the season by going to the net and slipping a rebound from an Alex Kovalev shot underneath Luongo. It was career point No. 998 for Kovalev. Earlier, Luongo had stopped Regin on a breakaway. It was huge for me to score, said Regin, who was one of the best players on the ice with lots of chances. After the breakaway, I thought I would never score again. Just 22 seconds into the game, Daniel Sedin converted a pass from his brother Henrik on a 2-on-1 the result of a bad giveaway at the blue line by Alfredsson. The Senators start a difficult four-game road trip Saturday in Boston. Could be worse Mark Spector Sportsnet.ca The Canucks thought they had problems... until they arrived in Toronto to face the woeful Leafs. They say that if we all pushed our troubles into the middle of the table, by the time you saw what ails everyone else you would end up taking your own problems back. And so the Vancouver Canucks head into the Air Canada Centre Saturday night, dogged by problems. Real, serious problems. For instance, the Canucks are just 3-5 away from Rogers Arena, and were shut out Tuesday in Montreal. Sure, they beat Ottawa up by a 6-2 score Thursday night, but the second line what's going on with the second line? So far on this road rip, Mario Blizak has more goals (one) than Michael Samuelsson and Mason Raymond combined. In fact, in seven road games, the Ryan Kesler-Samuelsson-Raymond line has scored just three goals -- all by Kesler. Together they are minus-11. At home they're plus-12 with nine goals. What gives? "I don't know what to say," Samuelsson told the Vancouver Sun before the Ottawa game. "You could expect a little better out of us, that's for sure." Yes, Leafs fan, these are what pass for legitimate worries in Vancouver. The Canucks' first place standing in the Northwest? That's expected. Henrik and Daniel floating along in the Top 15 NHL scorers? Cruising along on pace for 98 points each? Like they say, it's never a story when a plane lands safely. But do you think that if the Canucks could push those problems into centre of the table, that the Toronto Maple Leafs wouldn't trade them for their own troubles in a heartbeat? Yes, what passes for disconcerting on the West Coast must cause a Leafs fan to shake his toque. A 2-0 loss at Montreal has Canucks fans fretting? Try seven straight losses by Toronto, as the Leafs have earned just three points in their past 11 games. Having fun yet, Leafs Nation? "This should not be pleasant for anybody," goalie J.S. Giguere said on Thursday. "If you are in this and having fun, you should question where your head is at." Toronto has, like poor Vancouver, had a rough time on the road this year. In fact, things haven't been so swell at home either, which means the Leafs could qualify for that old Harry Neale line, searching for somewhere else to play after being brutal both at home and on the road.
"We're just talking about staying positive right now," admitted defenceman Brett Lebda, after the latest fixture, a 4-1 loss in Florida. "We see flashes in our game that give us hope and we have to turn those flashes into long periods of time." Yeah, flashes. Lately, when the Leafs see a flash, it probably means a photo radar ticket is in the mail. The Leafs power play hasn't scored in three games, and overall the team has dented the ol' twine just 16 times in its last 11 games. Vancouver's offence has produced 15 in its last four games -- and 31 goals in its last eight games -- despite the shutout in Montreal. Toronto doesn't score that many in practice, which is perhaps why GM Brian Burke -- who has steadfastly promised to bring Nazem Kadri along patiently -- switched gears and called him up from the Marlies along with Keith Aulie on Friday. It defines desperation, when the injection of a 20-year NHL rookie is considered a solution for a lineup he clearly wasn't good enough to make two months ago. The move comes in concert with head coach Ron Wilson's shakeup of his lines at practice Thursday. Most notably, he broke up rookie centre Tyler Bozak and struggling sniper Phil Kessel, another sign of patience wearing thin in Toronto. Bozak, who had just 37 games of NHL experience before being thrust into the No. 1 centre role this season, was predictably overmatched by the responsibility. It was simply too much to ask from the near-rookie, and flew in the face of any conjured notions of patience in this Leafs rebuild. Meanwhile Kessel has begun to make his home on the perimeter, and it's showing on the scoresheet. He hasn't registered a point in seven games, let alone a goal. "We're getting enough shots, we're getting enough scoring chances. It is psychological, it gets in your head," said Wilson. "The power play had a number of scoring chances (in Florida), and sometimes we're so tight we don't see an open corner, the five-hole and things like that." It is noteworthy that Leafs beat writers felt compelled to note Thursday that Clarke MacArthur has embarked on a four-game goalless streak. Seriously -- the guy has never scored more than 17 in a season. It's like, "In other news, Travis Moen was scoreless for Montreal." Alas, that would be Montreal's problem. Vancouver has enough of their own. Canucks rebound for 6-2 win over the Senators Kesler's body of work drives Canucks By Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Sun columnistnovember 11, :55 PM OTTAWA Tanner Glass held the paper at arm's length, as if he didn't want to risk contamination by getting too near it. He stared in disbelief, the image more shocking than his name on the scoresheet twice in Thursday's National Hockey League game against the Ottawa Senators. It was a picture of Vancouver Canuck teammate Ryan Kesler, wearing underwear and nothing else, occupying a half-page of The Vancouver Sun. Oh, wow, Glass finally muttered. Was this airbrushed? That's embarrassing, Canuck defenceman Kevin Bieksa chimed in. I don't think the guys know about this. Oh, but they will. The newspaper's circulation department could open a kiosk today in the corner of the Canucks' dressing room. Bieksa endured endless ribbing from teammates a couple of years ago when a B.C. magazine named him one of the 10 most beautiful people in the province. And Bieksa didn't do a photo
shoot in his gonch, looking like he was waiting to have his pecs oiled for the final posedown competition. You have to be pretty confident to do something like that, Bieksa said. Well, yes. If you're going to pose in underwear for a local sports apparel company, you better be able to back it up on the ice. Thursday, encumbered by full uniform and pads, Kesler scored twice and came within a thirdperiod post of a hat trick as he drove the Canucks to a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators. His blue-collar performance was exactly what the Canucks needed to establish some road presence after Tuesday's weak 2-0 loss in Montreal. Kesler's photo shoot was also needed by teammates to break the monotony of an 11-day trip. I haven't seen it pinned up [in my locker] yet, he said. I'm waiting for that. For a lot of Canucks, the wait ended Thursday. Kesler's goals were his first on the road this season at even-strength. Glass, who couldn't remember his previous goal because it was 50 weeks ago, scored one and also set up the first goal of Mario Bliznak's NHL career during a four-goal third period for Vancouver. Alex Burrows scored his first of the season, five games into his comeback from major shoulder surgery. Twelve of 18 Canuck skaters registered points, and all four lines contributed as Vancouver coach Alain Vigneault collected his 300th NHL victory in the arena where he suffered immeasurable hockey hardship with a horrendous Ottawa expansion team in the 1990s. Vigneault believes the Canucks have more depth and ability than ever before, and in the third period they showed a lot of it, winning for the seventh time in eight games. For now, the shutout in Montreal looks like an aberration. The Canucks visit the Toronto Maple Leafs on Saturday. You can say whatever you want, but this is big, especially on a road trip like this where you have two more games, Canuck captain Henrik Sedin said. If you lose two [at the start], then all of a sudden you're in a bad slump and lose confidence. Burrows gained a pile of it by scoring from Daniel Sedin's centring pass 33 seconds into the final period. Thirty-eight seconds later, Kesler got body position on defenceman David Hale and flipped in the rebound from Mikael Samuelsson's shot to make it 4-1. Burrows, whose first point of the season was an assist on Daniel's 2-on-1 goal 22 seconds after the opening faceoff, scored for the first time since March 30. I knew it would come, he said. When you play with the twins, you've got to put up points. It's good to provide energy, too, but you've got to score. Henrik said: He's had some trouble coming back. It's tough to find your groove when you miss not only 10 games, but most of the summer, too. He played his best game by far tonight. That was a good sign. So were the contributions of Glass, Bliznak and Rick Rypien on the fourth line, and the longoverdue breakthrough on the road by Kesler's second line. And the outstanding boardwork Jannik Hansen, Raffi Torres and Aaron Rome provided to make possible Kesler's first goal, which broke a 1-1 tie at 11:20 of the second period. Senators Peter Regin and Sergei Gonchar, in garbage time, beat Canuck goalie Roberto Luongo, who made 33 saves and was outstanding in the first period when Vancouver carelessly gave the puck away in their zone at least six times. The way we played in the first period was a little ugly, Glass said. But we tried to simplify our game and play in straight lines instead of going across the middle. That was the way we needed to play, Kesler said of the superior puck management in the game's second half. We needed to chip, get the puck deep, shoot and drive to the net. That's how we scored all our goals. It's tough to get everybody going at the same time; it never seems to happen. But tonight we got goals from all four lines. That's what we strive for. Vancouver Sun: LOADED
Canucks: Skipping a skate to stand proud By Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver Sun ColumnistNovember 11, :04 PM OTTAWA Vancouver Canuck players were solemn spectators Thursday morning at the National War Memorial as Canada honoured its soldiers on Remembrance Day. Skipping their customary morning skate didn t make the Canucks better players, but coach Alain Vigneault hopes it helps make them better people. Most definitely, Vigneault said of perspective gained from attending the 40-minute ceremony at the base of Parliament Hill. Everybody thought this was a great idea. It was just the right thing to do. Although a handful of players were required to skate at Scotiabank Place, most of the Canuck team mustered in the lobby of their hotel at 10:30 a.m. and made the short walk to the War Memorial, where a small area of Elgin Street had been reserved for them. Although they had no direct view of the ceremony, most players stood attentively through speeches and prayers and songs, watching the service on jumbo screens set up for the public. Most players applauded as Canadian Forces personnel, including many Second World War veterans, paraded past them at the end of the ceremony. To see generations of soldiers I can t imagine what they ve gone through but to honour those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada is a small gesture for us, Canuck Manny Malhotra said. The final parade, seeing generations going by and the pride they have in being a member of the armed services, that s the point that really hit home for me. Canuck Alex Burrows said he ll never forget the poem, written by a 10-year-old girl after her father was killed in Afghanistan, that was read to the crowd of thousands. That part really got me, Burrows. It was good to be there. We should give back to the people who have fought for what we have. SUPERMARIO: One day after his recall from the minors, former Vancouver Giant Mario Bliznak scored the first goal in just his third National Hockey League game. The Slovak, summoned by Vigneault to give his fourth line a natural centreman, batted in Tanner Glass high pass at 16:36 of the third period in the Canucks 6-2 win. It feels good to get first one, the 23-year-old said. There s only one time you can get your first. Hopefully, I can continue contributing to the team. Bliznak bumped Peter Schaefer from the lineup as Rick Rypien moved from centre to right wing on the fourth line. It was disappointing for Schaefer, who is trying to extend his career and may not get another chance to play in Ottawa, where he spent four seasons with the Senators. MANY WILLIAMS: The second-biggest gathering in Ottawa was for Darryl Williams family reunion. The Canuck assistant coach, who spends most of the season separated by 7,000 kilometres from his wife and children in St. John s, is taking advantage of a week in Eastern Canada to get his family together. And not just his own. Williams brother Glenn lives in Ottawa, and his sister travelled from Portage la Prairie, Man., with her family. Parents, Eric and Nettie Williams, also flew in for the reunion. Their eight grandchildren were romping around Scotiabank Place when the Canucks practised Wednesday. We ve really been looking forward to this, Williams said. It s not an easy thing being away from your family. At the same time, I know I m not the only one in this situation where you re away because of work. We re lucky that three or four times during the season, they ll come out to Vancouver and I can see them. Williams said he his wife, Nancy, decided the family would stay in St. John s while Darryl spends hockey seasons in Vancouver. Their son, Ben, celebrated his seventh birthday in Montreal. His sister, Sophia, is 12. Their schedule works better in Newfoundland, Williams said. They ve got dance and music and hockey. And when we sat down and really looked at our [Canuck] schedule and how much I d be
away, there was only going to be 30 or 40 nights during the season when we d all be together for supper. HURT, BUT NOT BADLY: Canuck winger Mason Raymond has been playing with what the team has called a hand injury. But it appeared to be his shoulder that absorbed the blunt of P.K. Subban s check Tuesday in Montreal. Raymond was sore, but made it through Wednesday s practice and was back in the lineup against the Senators. Vancouver Sun: LOADED Canucks game day: Bieksa, Bliznak to play in Ottawa By Iain MacIntyre, Vancouver SunNovember 11, 2010 OTTAWA Vancouver Canucks Kevin Bieksa was well enough to attend the Remembrance Day ceremony today, making him well enough to play against the Ottawa Senators tonight, when minor-league callup Mario Bliznak makes his season debut. Bieksa did not practise Wednesday due to the flu, but walked with teammates from the Canucks' hotel to the National War Memorial as Vancouver cancelled its morning skate so could observe Remembrance Day. They stood for an hour on a brisk, clear day in the nation's capital as Canada remembered soldiers who have fought wars for their country. Bieksa's recovery means defenceman Keith Ballard, who was a healthy scratch for the first time in his National Hockey League career Tuesday in Montreal, won't be getting back into the lineup tonight. Bliznak, the former Vancouver Giants' checker who was recalled Wednesday from the Manitoba Moose, will centre the Canucks' fourth line. Rick Rypien is expected to be moved back to his more natural position on right wing, bumping Peter Schaefer out of the Canuck lineup. The timing of the scratch will be disappointing for Schaefer, who spent four seasons with the Senators and salvaged his career by making the Canucks this fall on a tryout. Schaefer played in all of Vancouver's first 14 games. But neither Schaefer nor Rypien was able to play well enough at centre to fill in for injured fourth-liner Alex Bolduc, which is why the Canucks summoned Bliznak, the 23-year-old who played two games for Vancouver last season. The Canucks on Tuesday played their worst game in three weeks, losing 2-0 in Montreal, so it will be interesting to see their level or urgency tonight after the Nov. 11 ceremony took their minds off hockey and provided some perspective to players. To see generations of soldiers I can't imagine what they've gone through but to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice for Canada is a small gesture for us, Canuck Manny Malhotra said. The final parade, seeing generations going by and the pride they have in being a member of the armed services, that's the point that really hit home for me. The Senators, who have won four straight and six of their last seven games by taking advantage of some weak opponents, skated as usual Thursday morning. Ottawa coach Cory Clouston announced that backup goalie Pascal Leclaire, who injured his groin Oct. 14 and hasn't played since, will play against the Canucks so starter Brian Elliott can rest. We can t play Brian 70 games in a row, Clouston told reporters. Brian is nursing a little bit of a bump and a bruise. It s the perfect timing. We have five or six tough opponents coming up here. We need to have [Elliott] well rested and focused and we need to get Pascal back on track here as well. PLAYERS TO WATCH Senators: D Sergei Gonchar, signed to a three-year, $16.5-million contract at age 36, is a carnival ride. He has 11 points in 15 games but is minus-7.
Canucks: C Henrik Sedin and LW Daniel Sedin had a rare off-night in Montreal and could respond big-time against a Senator defence they toyed with two years ago. INJURIES Senators: D Filip Kuba (leg) is out. Canucks: D Sami Salo (Achilles), FW Guillaume Desbiens (hand) and C Alex Bolduc (ankle) are out. Vancouver Sun: LOADED Canucks show balance and grit in 6-2 win over Ottawa By Ben Kuzma, The ProvinceNovember 11, 2010 OTTAWA This is what good teams do. They find a way to erase doubt and provide hope. They find a way to beat a good club on a great roll and find that winning on the road isn't as hard as they had made it out to be. From the second line no longer being the first concern about scoring at even strength away from Rogers Arena thanks to a pair of goals by Ryan Kesler to Roberto Luongo turning in a clutch performance to Tanner Glass netting his first goal in 61 games and Mario Bliznak getting his first in three career outings, a 6-2 victory over the Ottawa Senators was significant. Yes, the Canucks are no longer road worriers. They got goals from all four lines and got their coach his 300th victory as an NHL bench boss. "You can say whatever you want, but it's big," said Canucks captain Henrik Sedin. "Especially on a road trip like this. You lose two and all of a sudden you're in a bad slump and you lose confidence. Good teams, they rarely lose two in a row and it's something we really focussed on." Kesler's effort that snapped a 1-1 draw in the second period was an example of the way the Canucks must execute on this five-game road trip as they dominated a club that had won four straight and six of its last seven. It was second efforts in forechecking and pinching that were missing Tuesday in a 2-0 loss at Montreal. The key goal started with Kesler stapling Segei Gonchar to the end boards, continued with a good pinch by Aaron Rome and puck control by Jannik Hansen. And it ended with the Dane spotting Kesler down low before the centre patiently went across the crease before stuffing the puck past a prone Pascal Leclaire. "It's the type of shift you have to have," said Canucks coach Alain Vigneault. "That's playing the right way. Get behind the defence, and our defence was involved in the forecheck and Jannik made a really good play. Kes had two goals and could have had four." The trickle-down effect was a determined approach to stick a dagger in the Senators to start the third period. Alex Burrows and Kesler scored 38 seconds apart. Game over. First, it was Daniel Sedin patiently flipping a pass from behind the net to Burrows, who worked is way open into the slot and snapped his first goal of the season. And it continued with a dominant shift by the much-maligned second line that ended with Kesler shoving a backhand home off a rebound while falling to the ice. "We knew we were in a game after the second period and we needed to continue to get better," said Kesler. "We couldn't sit on that one goal and made a solid effort to get it. The first two goals in the third were simple plays. Get in on the forecheck, get the turnover, get to the net and shoot." Glass then jammed a shot home from side of the net before Bliznak batted a puck out of mid-air for his historic marker. The Canucks then toyed with the Senators and Kesler nearly scored a shorthanded goal when he broke in and rang a shorthanded effort off the post. Segei Gonchar capped scoring but by then the Senators were bleeding badly all over the ice. The Canucks played Bliznak at centre on the fourth line between Glass and Rick Rypien and scratched Peter Schaefer. Rypien even fought twice. Still, it wasn't always pretty.
The Canucks were sloppy at times in the first period, coughing up the puck numerous times in their own zone and forcing Luongo to make tough saves. But they made adjustments and the new pairings of Alex Edler-Kevin Bieksa, Dan Hamhuis- Christian Ehrhoff and Andrew Alberts-Rome worked more often than not. The Canucks didn't need long to start making amends for the loss to the Canadiens. Daniel Sedin needed just 22 seconds to finish off a play that started with Henrik Sedin stripping countryman Daniel Alfredsson of the puck at the Senators blueline. He then slipped a backhand pass across to his brother and the winger easily snapped it by Leclaire for his 10th goal of the season and seventh on the road. Danish winger Peter Regin then barged to the net to jam an Alex Kovalev shot under the pads of Luongo just over three minutes later. "The way we played in the first period was a little ugly," said Glass. "Everybody had a gut check." VAN PROVIES: BEST MODESTY: "I'm more happy about the two points we got tonight. We didn't play a puck management game in the first period, got better in the second and were obviously real good in the third." Canucks coach Alain Vigneault on hitting the 300-win plateau as an NHL bench boss. BEST LEAP: Alex Burrows jumping for joy after scoring his first goal of the season after offseason shoulder surgery. BEST PAT ON BACK: "He's had some trouble coming back and it's tough to find the groove when you miss 10 games. He played his best game by far tonight." Henrik Sedin on Burrows being on long-term injury relief to start the season. BEST GUTS: After having Matt Carkner get the better of him in a first-period scrap, Rick Rypien then took on Chris Neil in the second period. BEST BS: "I don't know, but it was a pretty one I think." Tanner Glass trying to remember his last goal after scoring for first time in 61 games. BEST TWEET: "You call that tiny thing a Jumbotron. The Senators have clock envy." Vancouver Province: LOADED Goaltending, four-line effort makes the difference in Canucks win over Ottawa By Ben Kuzma, The ProvinceNovember 11, 2010 OTTAWA Roberto Luongo could have unravelled like a ball of string when the Ottawa Senators scored their first goal Thursday. On what appeared to be interference, Peter Regin jammed his stick into the goaltender and then jammed the puck across the goalline. Luongo didn't complain. Didn't lose it. "I had the puck on top of my pad and he kind of stuck me in my leg and it trickled in," shrugged Luongo. "It could could have gone either way, but I cheated a bit on the shot." Most importantly, the Canucks didn't cheat themselves after a spotty first period and pounded the Senators 6-2. The effort was so complete that every line figured in the scoring, the recalled Mario Bliznak got his first career goal by batting the puck out of mid-air and Tanner Glass got his first in 61 games by being in the right place at the right time. Bliznak played more than expected and logged 8:44 because he was keeping pace and didn't look out of place. And his baseball-like swing to net his first goal in three career NHL games was more about preparation and opportunity than luck.
"I was just driving to the net and the puck went in the air and it was a lucky play," shrugged Bliznak. "It feels good to get the first one and hopefully I can continue. The coach is trusting me to put me out against the big boys and it feels good. I got used to the speed and we got comfortable as a line." Glass couldn't remember the last time he scored it was Nov. 28, 2009 against Edmonton but his effort was a carbon copy of so many of the goals against the Senators. "It was a good block in our zone and Ryp creates a loose puck and we had a good forecheck and got pucks to the net," said Glass. "We just stuck with it tonight and played in a straight line rather than going across the ice. Once we did that, we got the turnovers." The Canucks also did an effective job of limiting the Alex Kovalev-Jason Spezza-Regin line to the one questionable goal. Luongo gets a lot of the credit because the trio combined for 14 shots and looks like it's going to cause a lot of teams a lot of headaches. "I felt pretty good the whole game," said Luongo. "It's exciting to play in these kind of games and I held the boys in there and then we had a really big third period." Jannik Hansen and Regin played together on Danish national teams since age 13 and there was much to like about both of their efforts Thursday. It's a testament to the country's developing game. "I'm trying to fit in," said Regin, the club's third-round pick in the 2004 entry draft. "I've played with both of them [Spezza, Kovalev] before and we all have some chemistry and all have different roles. "I'm trying to play it simple because they're so good at creating space and I've got to forecheck and create some turnovers for them. "I love this role and I'm having a lot of fun with it. But I have to be careful not to come through the middle too much because we can end up with three guys in the middle and be pretty easy to defend." Vancouver Province: LOADED How long will Schaefer be on outside looking in? Fourth line looks good against Sens By Ben Kuzma, The ProvinceNovember 11, 2010 OTTAWA The dominoes fell the wrong way for Peter Schaefer on Thursday. Needless to say, he's more than curious about whether he'll fall totally out of favour with the Vancouver Canucks. Not only did the Canucks recall centre Mario Bliznak from the Manitoba Moose and insert him at centre on the fourth line against the Ottawa Senators, they moved Rick Rypien from the middle to right wing. The next move for Schaefer, who's on a two-way contract, could be to the minors. But the Canucks don't have to make a move yet and waiting to see how Schaefer handles the adversity. The message? Play better. That's what Bliznak did Thursday in scoring his first career goal while Rypien fought twice. At 33, there's considerable mileage on Schaefer's hockey odometer, but he's been a valuable part of an improving penalty kill. He has played centre and wing, is a minus-3 in 9:56 minutes of average ice time through 14 games. His one goal came Oct. 26 during a 13-second, third-period shift against Colorado. Prior to that, he hadn't scored since March 27, 2008 for Boston against Toronto. Schaefer has already experienced the joy of proving he can play in the league and the agony of having his contract bought out by the Bruins on June 30, He was out of the game last season and trained in Vancouver in hopes of beating considerable roster odds on a tryout. Vancouver Province: LOADED Canucks take in Remembrance Day in Ottawa: 'Honour the people who battled for us'
By Ben Kuzma, The Province OTTAWA The national Remembrance Day ceremony received an international salute from the Vancouver Canucks on Thursday. Humbled by the procession of war veterans, marching bands and the solemn laying of wreaths, it was a moving experience for an NHL team that is stocked by Canadians and also by natives of Finland, Sweden, Germany, Denmark and the U.S. This was new to them along with the wearing of the traditional poppy and it placed a different perspective on a morning that would normally be reserved for a game-day skate before facing the Ottawa Senators. "This means a lot," said Swedish winger Mikael Samuelsson. "It doesn't matter if you're Canadian or wherever you're from. It's human beings fighting for what they think is right. You're so worried about the power play and not scoring and you go to this [ceremony]. It's good perspective." Sami Salo lost one grandfather to conflict in the First World War and another in the Second World War. Growing up, he was too young to understand what they endured, but a mandatory one-year stint in the Finnish army gave the Canucks defenceman needed perspective. That's why he was excited to experience the national ceremony in Ottawa, where he previously played but never saw the event live. And going through basic training helped Salo understand what his grandfathers sacrificed. "It was a great experience and it taught me a lot about living," he recalled. "We had simulated war games for 14 days. You were in the woods and there was no regular food, just eating out of your backpack. I can only imagine what those guys who are in a live battle are going through." Christian Ehrhoff had a grandfather who served in the German air force in the Second World War. He was captured on the Russian front and the Canucks defenceman was thinking of him Thursday. "Looking back, I would want to know more about it, but at a young age I only remembered a few things and kind of regret it," he said. "It's good for us to support this and show a tribute to the men who lost their lives." Cory Schneider is a history buff and has educated himself on the Second World War. Growing up on the eastern seaboard, the Marblehead, Mass., native was surrounded by military history there and at Boston College. He also has an uncle who served in Vietnam as a translator. To learn that Canadians played a major role in world conflicts is comforting to Schneider. The U.S. honours its military at the same time and calls it Veterans' Day, so Thursday was a special day for those on both sides of the border. "I think it's awesome," said Schneider. "It's great to see that Canada does similar things that we do and I found out that a lot of Canadians served and died in that war [Second World War] than I had previously thought. I didn't hear much about it, but it's good to know because they played such a big part in our history. It's a big day for a lot of people. "Boston has lot of memorials and allegedly my hometown is the birthplace of the American navy. I don't know if it's true or not, but we have a sign that says so. It's a big deal." Alex Burrows was in the front row of an area reserved for the Canucks at the national ceremony. Like his teammates, the Canadian clapped for the procession of war veterans who provided our freedom. It wasn't lost on the winger. "It's nice to be part of it and honour the people who battled for us," said Burrows. "It's really special and we owe a lot to our military. We don't really see it all the time, but they do a lot for us." Maybe Jannik Hansen put it best. "Obviously, it's humbling knowing what these guys gave up for their country," said the Danish winger. "It definitely puts a different perspective on things. We're just playing a game." Vancouver Province: LOADED Hansen looking forward to playing against fellow Dane Regin
By Ben Kuzma, The ProvinceNovember 11, 2010 OTTAWA Like those who have cashed in on playing with Henrik and Daniel Sedin, it's the same lottery-ticket feeling for Peter Regin of the Ottawa Senators. Aligned with Jason Spezza and Alex Kovalev, the 24-year-old Dane has yet to score but the odds are significantly better with the playmaking Spezza and trigger-man Kovalev. Either way, there are going to be opportunities today against the Vancouver Canucks at Scotiabank Place. "I'm trying to fit in," said Regin, the club's third-round pick in the 2004 entry draft. "I've played with both of them before and we all have some chemistry and all have different roles. "I'm trying to play it simple because they're so good at creating space and I've got to forecheck and create some turnovers for them. "I love this role and I'm having a lot of fun with it. But I have to be careful not to come through the middle too much because we can end up with three guys in the middle and be pretty easy to defend." It's an adjustment for the converted centre who shares some hockey history with Jannik Hansen. They were teammates with Danish national teams since they were 13 years old and the Canucks winger isn't surprised that his friend is getting a shot to play with a pair of dynamic offensive players as the Senators attempt to stretch their win streak to five games. "He's getting a chance now and making the most of it," said Hansen. "He's a talented player. He has real good skills and can make plays and is really reliable and good in his own end. But when you're playing with skilled players, you're playing an offensive game. "He's in the right mix there and it should work out good for him. I'm looking forward to playing against him." Hansen was also moved today by attending the national Remembrance Day ceremony with his teammates. "Obviously, it's humbling knowing what these guys gave up for their country," he said."it definitely puts a different perspective on things. We're just playing a game." Meanwhile, the Canucks will try to get back to their pressure game following a 2-0 loss in Montreal on Tuesday to open a five-game road trip. They did fire 35 shots on Carey Price, but most came from long range and there wasn't a prominent net presence. Only five Canucks have figured in scoring in seven road games and Henrik Sedin figures there was a lesson learned in the loss to the Canadiens. "We sat back too much and let them get the forecheck going and were on our heels too much and that's something we have to change," said the Canucks captain. "Our biggest problem is we've been changing our game on the road. Good teams play their game no matter where they are." The Senators have won six of their last seven games, but the wins have come against the Thrashers, Canadiens, Islanders, Maple Leafs, Florida and Phoenix. Today's game marks the start of tougher tests that include Boston and Philadelphia on the horizon. But first come the Canucks and their top-ranked power play. "It's definitely a game we'll be up for and a bit of a measuring stick," said Spezza, who has seven points in his last three games. "It's a great challenge for us. OF NOTE Defenceman Kevin Bieksa is fighting the flu but will play today. Centre Mario Bliznak has been recalled from the Manitoba Moose and is expected to centre the fourth line. Rick Rypien may move to wing on that line and Peter Schaefer could sit out. Roberto Luongo will start in goal. Defenceman Filip Kuba may return from a foot injury for the Senators.
