6 hmwimm^^ RED'S SECOND HOME The North Shore Sports Center BOSTON STREET, LYNN Thanks, "Red" "Lynn Youth Hockey is grateful for this opportunity to publicly recognize a man who, more than any other, has been "Lynn Youth Hockey" for the past 30 years. No other individual has done more for hockey and the youth of Lynn and Nahant than coach Ben (Red) Foote. His guidance and continued help in the first decade of Lynn Youth Hockey as a program has been immeasurable. Coach Foote and hockey are synonymous in Lynn. One cannot trace hockey's roots without bringing his name into the conversation. Speaking on behalf of all those who contributed and participated in Lynn Youth Hockey in this first decade, our deepest thanks go to you for your guidance and concern. Together, we wish you continued success as a coach and teacher of men. The Executive Board, Participants, and Membership, of Lynn Youth Hockey WUMUWUW^^

8 Congratulation LYNN The year was 1952 and Lynn English High was searching for a replacement to "spell" hockey coach George Cosgrove, who was reporting for military duty. East Lynners now consider, looking back over the past two decades, that it was a consummate stroke of good fortune for the searchers to have finally settled on a skater off the squad of the old Lynnfield Bruins team. That, of course, would be Harold Benjamin (Red) Foote, and Red has been at the Bulldog helm ever since. "Ever since" has meant some of the most successful seasons in North Shore schoolboy coaching history, certainly in the sport of hockey. More than that, Red Foote has personally and publicly held himself as an example to the youth of the area, and it is for this reason, as much as any other, that we are honoring The Old Redhead tonight. The years have flown by since that 1952 "military replacement," and Red Foote has benefited both English High in particular and schoolboy hockey in general. For instance, it is widely known that his activities in the area of teaching the game to youngsters have, at times, cost him victories on the high school level. "Heck, (which is the strongest language I've ever heard Red use) these kids come in here long before they're in high school and I'll work with them at clinics, etc. Then they go to high school somewhere else and come back to haunt me," Red once told this writer. Be that as it may, Foote has had his moments, and they are moments any coach would give his best goalie-stick to be able to savor. That first season, for instance, he was on the board with a most successful start. The very next season brought onto North Shore Sports Center ice a group of skaters considered by many to be the outstanding threeyear nucleus among those seeing action in the 30-year history of the league. With Ron Tanner in goal and the high-scoring line of Tippy Johnson, Don Spinney, and Ernie Carpenter performing heroics, the Bulldogs went in league play in and won three times in the State Tournament before losing. The 5-3 loss to Walpole High came after the Bulldogs had won 14 games in a row and after they had established early leads twice in the semifinal game. Had they survived that one, they might have gone on to set a record that would be impossible to equal, since English High won both the 1956 and 1957 State titles. In 1956, they were in North Shore League play and waltzed through Stoneham (5-2), Natick (1-0 in overtime), Hingham (3-1) and, finally, Maiden Catholic (5-2) in the tournament. The following season, with Spinney and Carpenter graduated, English wasn't given much of a chance to repeat, especially with the presence of Melrose in the tourney. Melrose had snubbed the State Tourney in 1956 and opted to go straight to the New Englands. From that team, the Raiders were bringing back most of a powerful lineup, but there seemed little hope that an English-Melrose showdown would develop in But the Bulldogs knocked off a league record (losing to Winchester 3-2 and tying Peabody 1 behind Johnson, who had by now Bulldog." With Foote calling the sho talent to the best advantage, Englis team 5-4, slid past Boston Tech 1-0, up in the final against Merlose. When that one was over, a 1 Serino had set a State Tournament1 and Melrose was a surprised 2-0 lose Actually, the reputation est skaters in those years elevated No: repute. From the 1955 season throi

9 is (Red) Foote 1), then sailed into the tournament :arned the sobriquet of "The Toy s skillfully and manipulating his i whipped a highly-touted Newton tanked Arlington 4-0, then wound tie-recognized goalie named Don ecord of three straight shutouts Mished by Red Foote and his i Shore hockey to a position of ;h 1958, English was in tournament action, winning three times before losing in 1955 and winning twice before losing in As a matter of fact, Foote didn't experience a losing season until 1961, when his team suddenly plunged to an unexplainable in league play. "That was good for us," Foote once recalled. "It made us work all the harder." What he meant, of course, is that HE worked all the harder. And English came back to a long string of winning seasons. In 1966, some of the old adrenalin came back when the East Lynners went through the regular season with just one loss, then found themselves paired against Melrose in the States. But it wasn't to be, and Melrose emerged a 5-2 winner in that one to gain a measure of revenge. Incredible milestones have marked Foote's coaching career down through the years. There was the spectacular defense in 1956, when the team allowed only six goals in 14 games and goalie Ron Tanner gave up just three of those. There was the tournament performance in 1957 by Serino, who now serves as assistant coach to Foote. And there were, most of all, the many, many fine hockey players and young men who developed both as players and as people under Red Foote. There were the 37 consecutive victories beginning in 1954 and stringing out through In 36 of those games, English allowed one goal or less. And the thread that has firmly stitched together the hockey success over these years has been Red Foote. The North Shore Hockey League officially got under way in the season at an "open-air" Sports Center, and there are those who will tell you that it existed long before that on a nondescript pond in Marblehead. But, in taking its off-and-on turns as the dominant team in the league (with more ons than offs) English High has had the good fortune to have as its coach a man who not only works hard at refining young men into hockey players but who can look back on a career of accomplishment in the field of association with young people and helping them mature into solid, useful citizens. Red Foote is being recognized publicly tonight for the first time in his career. Knowing The Redhead as T do, I'm certain this affair is somewhat embarrassing to him, since he's kept a low-profile all these years. But despite his wish to remain in the background his friends have brought him into the limelight tonight for a much-deserved testimonial. Look around you. You will see just a small portion of the admirers Red Foote has gathered down through the seasons. Good luck, Red... and let's hav i 30 more years of the same... RED HOFFMAN
