The pair won last year s BFA Super Stakes with Flashin Flitter and the LG Pro Classic in February with Just The Way You Are ( Bruno ). I ve known for a while that filly was going to be a good one, said Donegan. Ben (her son) had told me that these were going to be better than last year s. I was like Yeah, right, but he was right. Ironically, Harmon said Ariel was hard to start on the barrels. I had three of my mom s colts and two outside horses and she was literally the worst one for the first two weeks, said Harmon, who didn t start the filly on the pattern until late March this year. Then it was like a light bulb (went on). Yet, the first time Harmon hauled the mare off to exhibition in May, she knew she had something, so picking her as her slot horse was easy. She s the kind of horse that you can t hold back on, she said. You can t just make a solid run; you have to go for it. Even when I was exhibitioning her, I tried to stay ahead of her and not get bad habits, just riding her square up into the turns every single time and not letting her drop. I didn t want to get in that habit. I felt with her mother I let her get away with some bad habits and it ended up costing me. So, throughout her whole exhibition career, I made it my mission to keep her square and not drop her and ride her all the way up into the turn. I think that s going to help her in the long run. I kept telling myself it s okay if she goes by the barrel occasionally. As long as she s not trying to hit the barrel, it s okay if she goes by the barrel. Harmon said her goal for the Super Stakes was to stay out of the mare s way. That morning in the Super Stakes practice, I wanted to cruise her through and it didn t work for me, she laughed. She murdered the barrel. I told myself all day to trust her and go for it. I did, and it worked. Their first run on the clock in competition ever was a She got so low around the barrels, especially the second barrel, that I felt like my feet were dragging, Harmon recalled. I knew in the back of my mind that I had to get around the third barrel and I ran her by it. They came back the next morning and won the first round of the Juvenile Futurity with a record-setting (fastest time at the BFA for a 3 yr old), for an additional $7,166. I remember running to the third barrel, thinking Oh my God! We are flying. I said, Whoa, Whoa, Whoa, and she just inhaled it. I was blown away. On their second run in the Juvenile, they caught the third barrel. It was totally my fault. I leaned, and she hit it. All I had to do was run around, she mused. Ariel is by ultra-popular leading sire BHR Frenchies Socks and out of BA Tee It Up Ta Fame ( Gabby ), a daughter of Dash Ta Fame out of the blue hen mare Tee Chant, by Joe Tee. Donegan purchased Gabby at the 2009 BFA Sale from her breeder Bogie Webb. I bought her because of her mother, said Donegan, who noted that Harmon won the BFA Futurity the night of Gabby s purchase on Guys Cash Perks. She was small and had quite the attitude. The first day at home she ran Lacey out of the round pen! As a three-year-old, Gabby fractured her splint bone and had to have surgery. I didn t not work barrels unless I was taking her to exhibition. Harmon said that comprised her program with Ariel all of November. She was a horse that I felt she craved it so much and by working her it would make her over crave it. Some horses need more work, but I felt that s what would work best for her. When it came time to enter the BFA, Donegan asked her daughter if she was far enough along to even bother. She had like 30 days on her. She told me to go on and enter her because we were going anyway. She won the first go of the Juvenile in Futurity gurus will remember Gabby for her competitive career, but others probably know her from an incredible photo. Gabby was immortalized on the Internet through a Kenneth Springer photo from the LG Pro Classic. The mare had fallen at the first barrel in the slot race and Harmon came off. Gabby continued to the second and turned it, giving a Springer a memorable shot. Gabby I can t even explain, said Harmon through tears. Gabby was completely different than any other horse I ve ever rode. I don t really know what that is because I ve rode so many horses. She and I had this perfect bond. She was a rebel. No one liked to be around her. I just always laughed at her. Ariel was the product of embryo transfer, and Gabby carried her first foal in 2015, a 2016 colt by Slick By Design. The decision was made to let her carry after deep digital flexor tendon injury appeared to become chronic. Tragically, they lost Gabby on June 14 due to colic complications from a hole in her diaphragm. Whether it was always there or happened when she had her last foal, we don t know, she said. It seemed like colic, but it wasn t just colic. She had this deep cough. When they opened her up, there was a hole in diaphragm and her intestine had gone up around her lungs. Although surgeons were able to get the intestines in place, the location of the hole made it difficult to repair. About 10 days later, Gabby colicked again. During a seven-hour surgery, veterinarians tried to repair the hole using surgical mesh, but it didn t hold. Harmon said she wishes she had never bred Gabby since it s suspected that the delivery is what cause the diaphragm to tear, but she admitted that they don t know if that s surely what happened. She referenced Hailey Kinsel s testimony from the Sunday morning church service at the NFR. It s all in God s timing, she said. Things happen for a reason. It s out of your control. On the morning of the slot race, Harmon had broken down into tears when she realized she d called Ariel by her mother s name. She looks like her mom, said Donegan. She runs like her mom, but she s stronger. She s so confident and Lacey is very confident riding her. The Super Stakes Championship bookended a tumultuous year for the Donegan family. Between cancer diagnosis, traffic accidents, the loss of two great, young broodmares and injuries, the futurity horses delivered a measure of joy. The year has been so weird, just the highest of highs and lowest of lows, said Donegan. We ve had a lot of crazy bad things happen, but I m excited for all my homegrowns. As a mother of five, that includes all her homegrowns, both twolegged and four. 5 Epic BFA World Championships for Brandon Cullins and Robin Weaver By Tanya Randall History was made in Oklahoma City at the Barrel Futurities of America s World Championships when horses trained and ridden by Brandon Cullins for their owner Robin Weaver topped the Futurity, Derby and Juvenile for more than $81,000. It doesn t feel real, to be honest, said Cullins, a 28-year-old trainer from Clements, Md. When I started, Cody Bauserman won Fort Smith on LA Fame and won the derby on VF Red Bully. I always thought it would be really cool to do that, but never thought I would. It was pretty cool. Other trainers have double dipped, but never scored a triple. Molli Montgomery topped the Juvenile and Futurity last year, Troy Crumrine won both the Futurity and Derby in 2003, and Kristi Peterson and the legendary French Flash Hawk ( Bozo ) won the Derby and Sweepstakes in Cullins and Weaver had their first victory in the two-run average Juvenile Futurity with Weaver s homebred RR Mistakelly ( Mister ), who won $18,549. In the Futurity, Folsom Prisoner ( Sid ) placed in both qualifying rounds and shared the fastest time in the Finals to win the best of two run average for a tidy $41,957. Cullins and Weaver wrapped up the night, when VQ Sucker Punch ( Rocko ) finished out his aged event career with a repeat championship in the Derby for $8,559. Weaver wanted to thank Cullins for all his hard work for making these victories possible. Brandon has done a great job for me, she said. He s very talented. He s a natural, but he s also really honed his skills. Brandon was quick to thank Weaver for the opportunity, and he also wanted to thank all his fellow trainers that have helped him along the way. Everybody seems willing to help you; Lets you pick their brain, he said. There s too many to name. That s what I really like about the futurities. Everyone that s really good at what they do has been willing to help you out. Weaver and Cullins both wanted to thank LaWayne Graham, who has started all of her 2-year-old since KN Fabs Mist of Fame in Sometimes I don t think he gets enough credit, said Cullins, who also thanked his sponsors Seven Saddles and Equinety. He s called it every time which one he thinks is going to go do something. He s pretty good at that. Weaver added, He does a great job and is very gentle. He s just another one those that has the touch. Additionally, Weaver wanted to thank her significant other Tim for helping with the babies, Kathy Hamm for foaling out her recipient mares, her veterinarians Dr. Keith Brown at home and Dr. Reese Hand on the road, and Crystal and Cheyenne, who helped with the horses at BFA. Juvenile The Juvenile win was extremely special to Weaver, because she raised all her entries Mister, by Darkelly, and his half-sister RR Shaggy, by Epic Leader. This is actually the first crop of foals that I ve bred myself, she said. It was very exciting for me to watch those Juveniles run. (Incidentally, their older half-sibling, KN Fabs Gift Of Fame, is currently sitting second in the average at the NFR.) I didn t want a stallion, laughed Weaver. I wanted a mare, because I like mares. But, with his breeding and how pretty he is, I decided to keep him a stallion. I also debated about running him or not because I knew people would breed to him based on his breeding, but I thought, You know, he s bred to run barrels. Let s run him. Her jockey wasn t too keen on training and hauling a stallion at first. He s always been a little bit of challenge, Cullins said. I ve never really had a stud this good. I was worried about riding him because I knew being out of that mare, Robin had a lot invested in him and I was little worried I wasn t going to get him there. He always tried to turn, sometimes a little too hard. I had a little bit of trouble with him to the left about overworking, just being too aggressive. When I went out to those fall futurities in September, I took him with me. That really grew him up. I stayed at Kassie Mowry s between some of the futurities and she helped me with him a little bit and had me trying some things. I talked to Jolene (Montgomery) about him off and on throughout the year about him just because she had Misty and her Blazin Jetolena for this year is out of that mare. Once he got hooked, he s been really easy. I felt really good about him, but when it come Tuesday night, he felt a little sluggish. He wasn t really up, and I didn t feel like he was going to run. When he ran down the alley, he got a little looky. I think the people in the stands got to him. It felt like he didn t even know where the first barrel was, but when I pulled him to it, he came all at once. He knew he was supposed to turn it and he tried to make up for it. I just feel like he got green on me. He tried when I got to the barrels and pulled on him, but he was taking too dramatic moves to be fast. Mister made up for his mistakes in the Juvenile, placing eighth in the first go with a and winning the second go with a The first go of the Juvenile, I ran him in there a little harder and missed my first barrel a little bit, but he came back quick on the back side. His second and his third he made up some time there. His last run, he felt really good. He hit his spots really good. He might have got by his third a step, but he s so big and powerful he can kind of make up for it, he said. After picking up the Juvenile saddle, Cullins had jokingly asked Weaver where they planned on putting the other two saddles, never dreaming that it could possibly be a reality. I try not to think about any of that stuff, he said. I just try to go make a run and see what happens. I knew I had pretty good shots with all of them. Futurity In the Futurity, Cullins started off the week with a chance to make history, winning $125,000 from Future Fortunes. Cfour DarkPatchPatsy, also owned by Weaver, had won the Sires Slots at the 2016 BFA Juvenile and 2017 Old Fort Days Futurity. Since she was paid into the $25,000 Fortunes Round, she had a chance at a $100,000 bonus for winning all three. We came close on that, noted Weaver. The Fortunes Round was determined by the fastest of the two qualifying runs by horses paid into that sidepot slot race. It was still a fun thing to go for, for sure. I was really happy with how she did too. Patsy, a 2013 daughter of Darkelly out of Ms Holy Patch, by the Easy Jet grandson Baynors Pivot, earned $5,652 for placing 13th in the average. Meanwhile, Sid was the one that stole the show. The Blazin Jetolena gelding is a half-brother to Rocko. Both are out of Honor This Nonstop, a daughter of the Jet Of Honor son Mr Honor Bound out of a Nonstop Jet mare. 11 BFA World Championships Continued From Page 9 ers the Varners as a yearling after they started riding Rocko. Cullins said Sid came on mid-spring. He started out a little bit later, he said. Diamonds & Dirt was the first time he drew a check. We didn t really run him too many places until Diamonds & Dirt. That s when he really started coming on. The bigger futurities, he s always been there. He s won a couple big opens back East for me. He won the Syracuse Open and the Colonial for me. He s placed about everywhere I ve taken him. He s been a really good colt. At the BFA, Sid was solid, turning in two 15.3s to place in both rounds and a to share the top of the Finals. His first run I just let him roll in there, said Cullins. Sometimes, he s pretty setty and other times you can gas him too much. I just wanted to roll him in there and let him find his first. He was a little setty to it, but he worked really good. I was really happy with his run. Like Patsy, Sid was eligible for the Fortunes Round, so having the Finals already made, Cullins decided to send the gelding and see what happened. He had a pretty good first, but stepped off of it a hair leaving it, he said. I think that set us up bad for the second and I hit it. I dropped the reins and set it back up and it all went back to where it s supposed to. He had a really good third. Cullins was a little worried about Sid s draw in the Finals. The diminutive gelding was fourth out in the first drag and the ground had been getting deep. He stays in pretty tight, so I figured if we stayed on top, then the ground wouldn t hurt us too bad, he said. He had a really good first and second. On the third, he cut the corner on the backside. I felt him setup pretty hard and I knew he was going to come back really hard over it. I grabbed it and tried to move it out of the way. I about come out the backside when he left. It was a little bit scary there for second. She took him after Fort Smith, explained Cullins. She ran him at a couple of rodeos in Texas and then took him up north with her. She ran him at Calgary and Cody. When I went back to Doxa, she brought him there and I got him back. I jumped back on him then. Robin s run him a couple of times. She won a rodeo up in New York on him. She tried to qualify for the American on him, but was a couple out of it. Kassie also qualified for the American on him. At BFA, Rocko was in a dual with his stablemate, A Cornerstone, owned by Sarah Griffin. The Brookstone Bay gelding, out of Speedy Petitti, by Lanes Leinster, turned in the fastest time of the event, a to win the first round of the Derby. Rocko, who is by all-time leading sire Dash Ta Fame, had the sixth fastest qualifying time going into the Finals, a that was fourth in the first go. 14 BFA World Championships Continued From Page 11 made a few mistakes here and there, but he felt really solid. The second go, I was trying to get a little further down in there for the finals. I let him roll up into the first. I felt like he was running a little too hard and, so I asked him to come a little early. When you do that on him, he ll always run around the first. In that pen it s a little hard to get a good first barrel to where you can get to the backside and leave. If they start to turn too early and then run around it and that momentum brings you back toward the timer and sets you up bad for the third. That s kind of what he did. I knew he was going to come back hard and I couldn t get to it and he rolled over it. He ran a.14 and would have won the second go. In the Finals, Cullins and Rocko were first in the very last drag. At the time, Old Fort Days Derby Champions Margo Crowther and Shes Packin Fame had the lead, having posted a for a average. After a couple of people ran I knew I had to be fast to get down in there, he said. So, I just did the same thing, but I let him run up an extra step. He had probably one of the best runs I ve had on him in a while. It felt really good. He didn t really make any mistakes anywhere. Weaver plans on running Rocko quite a bit more. She plans on entering the pro rodeos in Fort Worth and San Angelo this coming winter. He s really fun, so I d like to go to some rodeos on him, she said.
