1 BARREL RACING REPORT - Fast Horses, Fast News since Volume 5, Issue 50 December 13, 2011 Sears and Martha Win Second World Title Each year, after lots of rodeos around the country and 10 wild rounds in Vegas, only one lucky lady leaves Las Vegas the World Champion, this year that was Lindsay Sears and her super-mare, Sugar Moon Express (Martha). It wasn t an easy road to get back to Las Vegas. Just one year ago, the same pair left Vegas unsure if Martha would every circle 3 barrels again. Lindsay Sears and Martha came into the barrel racing world slowly at first, qualifying to the WNFR down the list in That year Martha wasn t able to compete at the Finals. However, that winter Sears started Martha s move towards her signature left barrel running style and the rest as they say is history. In 2007, the pair stormed into the WNFR, winning 5 go round and finishing the year with $119k at the WNFR ending up Reserve World Champion. In 2008, the pair again assaulted the Thomas & Mack, winning another 5 go rounds, and set a barrel racing record at the WNFR of $139,000. They finished the year as the World Champion with another earnings record of $323,000. The following year was another great one for the pair as they won another $130,000 at the WNFR while finishing the year as Reserve World Champions for a second time. Lindsay Sears and Martha had successfully put together the most profitable 3-year run in barrel racing history. Sears and Martha rolled into Vegas in 2010 expecting to earn another $100,00 after a great regular season. They had a less than stellar week but it was a solid performance. In the ninth round, Martha slipped at the second barrel and in the blink of an eye her hip hit the dirt. Just that quick she suffered a severe injury to her stifle. In human terms it would be like blowing out your knew. After having to get on her backup horse in the final round, Sears left town 3rd place for the year. Sears thought that might be Martha s last trip down the alley at the Thomas and Mack. In the early part of 2011 Sears and her team of vets worked on Martha using every option other than surgery at their disposal. Through the spring Martha was starting to show signs of recovery but would Martha be Martha again? Or would she just be a shadow of herself? No one would really know until their first competition run against the best horses in the world. That first run came in June during the first round at the Reno Rodeo. Sears and Martha earned $311 and placed tenth running 4 tenths off the winner. The more important check was Martha s soundness. Sears knew that Martha was back to being Martha. Now, Martha was back and they were off on a big summer run to give the Sears team another chance to claim the world title. With Martha being Martha, the duo rolled through the end of the season to come into the 2011 WNFR in second place just $10,000 behind world leader, Brittany Pozzi. The 2011 WNFR was going to be one for the ages, #1 Brittany Pozzi and Yeah Hes Firen, #2 Lindsay Sears and Sugar Moon Express, and #3 Sherry Cervi and Mp Meter My Hay were all successful veterans at the Thomas & Mack so it was definitely going to be a shoot out. They sure didn t disappoint as Pozzi and Sears tied for the first round win with Cervi placing just a little behind, the fight was on! Pozzi had a smoking run going in round 2 but kicked a barrel over to open the door for Sears and Cervi. In 2011 WNFR Continued on Page 3

2 World Champions Crowned Following Round 10 If ever there was a reason for Luke Branquinho to shake his booty at the Thomas & Mack Center, this was it. Branquinho - who routinely performs the celebration dance in the arena following fast times - won his third world title and first since He came out on top in the pivotal average race after a 4.7-second run that earned a sixth-place check in front of 17,720 fans during Round 10 of the Wrangler National Finals Rodeo on Saturday. Championship Saturday at the Wrangler NFR featured a relatively equal number of veteran champions and gold-buckle newcomers. Branquinho was joined in the veterans category by saddle bronc rider Taos Muncy and barrel racer Lindsay Sears. Newcomers to the world champion club included bareback rider Kaycee Feild, team ropers Turtle Powell and Jhett Johnson, tie-down roper Tuf Cooper and bull rider Shane Proctor. A trio of steer wrestlers had a strong chance to win the world going into the final round, but Branquinho earned the average title with a time of 41.9 seconds on 10 head. He claimed checks in nine of 10 rounds to earn a Wrangler NFR record $146,779 in his event. That pushed his season total to $234,518 - more than $56,000 ahead of second-place Shawn Greenfield, who also took second in the average. Winning one is amazing, but winning three - I can t even explain it, Branquinho said. Just to be in the situation to win one, let alone three, is an amazing feeling. Branquinho saw his two closest competitors - Greenfield and Jason Miller - break the barrier for 10-second penalties in Round 10. Those guys were going in there knowing they had to win good in the rounds to stay ahead in the average and get the money they needed, Branquinho said. They were taking a chance, you know. In his fourth Wrangler NFR, Cooper didn t have the week he might have dreamed about, but he still won $46,731 and held off a fierce challenge from fellow Texan Cody Ohl and Idaho cowboy Matt Shiozawa. Cooper took sixth in the final round with a 9.6-second run and finished seventh in the average. Cooper won $192,042 on the season -- $18,266 ahead of Shiozawa, who won the average title for the first time in his five trips to the Finals. One cowboy who didn t have to sweat it out on Saturday was Feild. After winning or splitting the win in five of the first nine rounds, he locked up his first world championship. But he still had some unfinished business heading into Round 10. He was within spitting distance of the Wrangler NFR average record set in 2008 by Justin McDaniel, and he held a slim lead in the Ram Top Gun Award standings over saddle bronc rider Jesse Wright. Mission accomplished. Feild topped Carr Pro Rodeo s MGM Deuces Night for 87 points to win an event record sixth Finals go-round and top the average record by 1.5 points. Like I said, I wanted to come out here and dominate, Feild said. Beating the average record wasn t my goal coming in, but through the week I looked up the score and knew what I would have to do to beat it. So, I kind of made that my goal. Winning a Ram truck thanks to his $179,327 - a Wrangler NFR record in bareback riding and for any cowboy competing in a single event - was just icing on the cake for a year in which Feild earned an event record $319,986. Feild wasn t the only one setting Wrangler NFR records. Team ropers Powell and Johnson bested the year-old earnings record ($120,419 set by Trevor Brazile and Patrick Smith in 2010) with $125,625 during their 10 days in Las Vegas. To put that in perspective, Powell entered the Wrangler NFR with just $69,782 won, while Johnson had $71,487. The two placed in seven rounds and won the average titles as Powell went from 13th to first in the heading world standings and Johnson went from 12th to first in the heeling standings. It s the first world title for each of the ropers, Powell from Stephenville, Texas, and Johnson from Casper, Wyo. I told Jhett this morning we should have met for breakfast at 5 o clock, because we were both laying there staring at the ceiling, Powell said. Ever since I was a kid, I ve dreamed of backing in the box in the 10th round at the NFR with the championship on the line, but it s a lot different than I expected. That s the hardest steer I ve ever run I my life. Johnson had a tough angle for his heel loop and caught just a single hind leg as the team finished sixth in the round with a time of 10.0 seconds. Clay Tryan and Travis Graves failed to place in the round, but took third in the average and finished a close second - less than $8,000 behind the leaders. When Turtle s rope went on, that steer shot back to the right, which put me in a bad position, Johnson said. I was just trying to find a place to get a shot then. I knew I had to catch him. It wasn t the loop I ve always dreamed about in that situation, but I got him. I didn t think I d ever get one (a world championship). I m a lot closer to the end of my career than the beginning. After leading the world standings nearly all season, Proctor found himself in a close battle with three-time World Champion J.W. Harris that left the gold buckle in doubt down to the final two bull rides of the Wrangler NFR. When Harris bucked off in the final round, Proctor was assured of the world title. Unfortunately, Proctor was bucked off and stepped on by his draw, Powder River Rodeo s Black Attack. Suffering a broken left arm, Proctor lay motionless in the arena for several minutes before being carried out by the Justin Sportsmedicine Team. He was X-rayed at the arena and surgery is being arranged. Proctor finished fourth in the average and amassed $238,249 in earnings. Harris finished the year with $209,361 after earning $78,317 at the Finals. Wrangler NFR rookie L.J. Jenkins claimed the average title by riding six bulls for 501 points. Muncy, the 2007 world champion, placed sixth in the final round with an 81.5-point ride aboard 2009 PRCA Saddle Bronc Horse of the Year Spring Planting to hold onto second place in the average race and fend off Jesse Wright for his second world championship. Muncy earned $94,471 during his 10 days in Las Vegas and edged Wright by just $8,540 after Wright earned a Wrangler NFR record $160,962 in the event. Wright also topped the average record - by 1.5 points - set by his brother Cody in Despite all that, it was Muncy who claimed the gold buckle. --Courtesy of Tracy & Dusti Swan Hubbard, TX Subscriptions: www. 3 2011 WNFR Continued From Page 1 the past few years one barrel down would still get a big average check so it sure didn t have her down and out, but did add a little intrigue. After Round 2 Sears and Cervi were 1-2 in the average but Pozzi was still leading the world. The barrel racing at this year s WNFR featured four rookies. Through the early rounds, Jane Melby and RC Back In Black won the third round. In the meantime, Carlee Pierce and her mount Rare Dillion were tipping barrels to win lots of cash. Many of us watching last year s WNFR thought Sherry Cervi and Mp Meter My Hay s arena record of may last for many years ahead, but in the fifth round Carlee Pierce and Rare Dillion worked out the kinks and ran a near perfect pattern. The duo scorched a to claim the WNFR arena record. Meanwhile, Pozzi, Sears, and Cervi were in a dogfight for the world title, at this point it was anybody s game. As barrel racers kept tipping barrels over, Pozzi kept climbing up the average standings and the world champion race got muddier round by round. Then in Round 8, finally some clarity. As Rc Back In Black and Jane Melby won another round (they won 3 on the week), a whole lot was going on. Both Cervi and Pozzi hit barrels again. For Pozzi, it was a barrel hit that cost her not only a likely world title, but an arena record, as she loped out of the arena after the hit barrel while running an amazing For Pozzi and Cervi, the loss of average winnings put Sears in the drivers seat for another world championship as she had taken over the lead in the average and only trailed Pozzi by $7,000 in the world standings. All Sears really needed to do was cruise around six more barrels in nice and easy fashion to win the world. Of course, Sears didn t nurse Martha back to health to hold her back, she had to let Martha be Martha. She finished out the week with two 13 second runs and another two placings to win the duos second world championship. Everyone wants to know what those magic words were but Sears says, That is one of the few things just between me and Martha. It is one of our few secrets. It s just a calming little thing I have done before every run we have made since I bought her. Usually, I do it before the camera comes to us but I was late in the 10th round so they caught it on camera WNFR Continued on Page 5 BARREL RACING REPORT DECEMBER 13, 2011 PAGE 3

5 2011 WNFR Continued From Page 3 Well, whatever it is, it sure worked! As Sears rolled out of the arena that day, she claimed the #1 spot in the world from Pozzi who had held that position since the TOTAL WNFR EARNINGS 1 Lindsay Sears $133, Sherry Cervi $93, Lisa Lockhart $79, Brittany Pozzi $77, Jane Melby $59, Christina Richman $52, Carlee Pierce $50, Jody Sheffield $49, Angie Meadors $46, Jeanne Anderson $33, Brenda Mays $32, Tammy Fischer $24, Sue Smith $15, Britany Fleck $2, Jill Moody 2011 WNFR AGGREGATE 1 Lindsay Sears $45, Christina Richman $37, Brenda Mays $29, Sherry Cervi $21, Jeanne Anderson $15, Jody Sheffield $11, Angie Meadors $7, Tammy Fischer $4, Brittany Pozzi Lisa Lockhart Jane Melby Jill Moody Britany Fleck Carlee Pierce Sue Smith beginning of February. After a couple days, as Sears had time to process winning her 2nd world title, she reflected. In 2008, I just had a fairy tale year, but this time is was sweeter because I started the year not even knowing that I would be able to run Martha again. I know it can all be over in a split second so I am just enjoying every moment. I am extremely thankful. I have to thank all the other girls out there because the competition was unbelievable and I was blessed to come out on top. Another perk of the 2011 WNFR for Sears is that she s leaving with a sound horse. This year they added sand to the arena and that made it a completely different barrel race. It was a fairer race. It wasn t a week of who s horse handled the ground or wasn t sore, it was who s horse has the best run that day. This year you could place anywhere on the ground, from top to bottom, and you couldn t do that in the past. In fact, Martha felt so good she could go to another rodeo this week and in the past she would need 2 months off after the finals. Martha and Sears have no immediate rodeo plans, in fact the books for Denver close tomorrow and they haven t decided if they are entering or not. For sure, they are headed home to Canada for Christmas. For now, the plan is that Martha will come out at San Antonio while Moe and Sears may head to some winter rodeos before then. Of course, since Martha holds some of the most valuable embryos in the performance world, it is only natural to wonder when they are going to start pulling embryos or retiring her to the broodmare pasture. Sears has no breeding plans at this time for Martha and no retirement plans. She does plan to retire her at a reasonable age while she can still enjoy a happy, healthy retirement. But, as long as Martha s being Martha, they will keep running for those world titles. For now, Sears will head back to the family ranch, victorious. She plans to spend some time in the saddle, out in the open pushing along a bunch of cattle. Don t tell her Dad that s what she likes to do, he ll have her riding pens in their feedlot! It s truly amazing how much can happen in a year, Sears and Martha went from a career ending injury to a career defining victory. But, they have no plans to ride off into the sunset so lookout for Martha being Martha in an arena near you in 2012! Brittany Pozzi and Yeah Hes Firen won third on the night to keep some pressure on Sears and give herself a chance at another world championship if Sears had an uh-oh in the final round. After this round Sears led the average by about 2.5 seconds and still only 3 had kept up all their barrels. Carlee Pierce was back on Rare Dillion, everyone else stayed on their same horses as Round 8. Round 10 Results 1 Jane Melby, RC Back In Black, 13.71, $17, Lindsay Sears, Sugar Moon Express, 13.75, $14, Angie Meadors, Heza Bug Leo, 13.94, $10, Jeanne Anderson, Flaming Firebug, 13.99, $7, Christina Richman, Xtrared, 14.08, $4, Brenda Mays, Judge Buy Cash, 14.09, $2, Sherry Cervi, MP Meter My Hay, Jill Moody, GS Doco Daisy, Brittany Pozzi, Yeah Hes Firen, Jody Sheffield, Skip The Finances, Carlee Pierce, Rare Dillion, Lisa Lockhart, An Oakie With Cash, Tammy Fischer, Easy Dash Oak, Britany Fleck, Dasher Dude, Sue Smith, Real Claim To Fame, Round 10 Jane Melby and RC Back In Black scored their 3rd Round win of the 2011 WNFR. The pair might be WNFR rookies but they sure aren t running that way. Meanwhile, Lindsay Sears could have played it safe and won their second world title but they decided to stick to the same gameplan as the rest of the week and ran a to be second in the round and claim the world title by over $45k! It was the first time since the very beginning of 2011 that Brittany Pozzi didn t have a #1 by her name as she led the standings until after the completion of the very last round. 7 barrel racers hit barrels in the final round of competition. Lindsay Sears and Sugar Moon Express won the average by 2.7 second, Christina Richman and Extrared were second in the average and Brenda Mays was third in the average. Jill Moody and Tr Dashing Badger ( in 2010) and Sherry Cervi with Mp Meter My Hay ( in 2009) are the two fastest. Jody Sheffield, Angie Meadors, and Tammy Fischer all placed in the average with 2 hit barrels each. Sears and Sugar Moon Express won or split 2 rounds and placed in 8 out of 10 rounds to be the high money winners of the WNFR for the barrel racers with $133,557 in earnings. Sears also ended up 4th in the running for the Ram Top Gun Award. This award was for the highest money earner for the finals in one event. Brittany Pozzi and Yeah Hes Firen placed in all 7 rounds that they kept the barrels up. In the 3 rounds they knocked barrels down, they also would have placed if they would have kept the barrels up. The team ended up with a $77,451 pay day. Sherry Cervi and Mp Meter My Hay were the second high money earnings barrel racing team at the finals with 7 round placings and $93,317 in earnings. Lisa Lockhart and An Oakie With Cash won 2 rounds and ended up the 3rd high money earner of the barrel racers at the finals with $79,038. First time WNFR qualifier, Jane Melby, and her mount Rc Back In Black didn t show any freshman jitters as they won 3 rounds during the finals. Another first time WNFR qualifer, Carlee Pierce, relied on the WNFR experience of her great horse Rare Dillion, as the team not only won 2 rounds but lowered the arena record to an absolutely scorching in Round 5. 12 Jess Gonna Be Famous is, Wins $100,000 BFA $uper$takes By Tanya Randall It was the most exciting, crazy nerve-wracking thing I ve ever been through! said Amy Williams, owner of BFA $uper$takes Champion Jess Gonna Be Famous ( Jess ). I still can t believe it! Ridden by Nissa Berry, Jess outran 47 other entries in a time of to take the $100,000 first-place check. The duo ran 12th in the order of go and had to wait to see if their time would hold. This was our first slot race to ever enter, said Williams, who hails from the South Texas town of Sandia. Her first barrel was really pretty. Her second barrel wasn t that great. She got really scotch-y going into it and Nissa knew she had to do whatever she could to leave it standing. Her third barrel was amazing. Berry added, I knew it was going to be intense with the crowd. It is like they say running at the NFR with all the people yelling, but you re riding a 3-year-old! I knew I was going to have to ride her to her spots. When I worked her, I just concentrated on keeping her fluid and moving forward. I was very fortunate that she let me help her. Williams bought Jess as a 2-year-old from Don and Katie Mc- Caslan of Raisin City, Calif. Ironically, the mare was bred and raised just up the road from Williams. Jess was bred by Renee Spiller of George West, Texas. The McCaslans bought the daughter of Dash Ta Fame out of the Mr Jess Perry mare, Kolin Cookie, as a yearling. She and her husband are a team, said Williams of Katie Mc- Caslan, from whom she s bought several horses of the past couple of years. They start all these horses, but rarely have anything run themselves because they sell them all. She kept telling me about her, and I finally was like, I ve got to have her. Jess made the return trip to Texas only to turn around and head back to California in June of her 3-year-old year. I had her for little while and Nissa rode her, and then she went back to California, said Williams. (The McCaslans own and stand First Down French.) She worked with her and got her to where she was running, and then she sent her back to us. Berry added, Katie is such a great trainer. I knew I wouldn t have any problems coming in after her. Williams and Berry flew out to McCaslan s to ride the mare before getting her back to Texas in time for the JB Quarter Horses Futurity in Waco. The plan was to exhibition the mare at the futurity to get her some exposure in a coliseum. In Oklahoma City, they used Jess s two runs in the Juvenile to prepare her for the $uper$takes. Berry and Jess hit barrels on their first run, but placed ninth for $1, on their second run of I wanted to use my two runs in the Juvenile to build up to that night, said Berry, 25. My first run I just rode that mare too cautious. She had limited hauling, but I knew she was very special. She worked awesome, but just caught them coming out. For my second run, I just told myself to let go of my nervous feelings and just go ride your horse. I did a lot of praying too to stay in my mind and show my horses to the best of my abilities. Berry, a Greeley, Colorado, native, who moved to Texas six years ago, started working for Williams a year ago. She grew up running barrels and ended up coming to Texas to work for a cutting horse trainer that had horses for Liz Pinkston s family. It was through Pinkston that she met Williams. Now she trains out of the Williams Mejor de Nada ( Better Than Nothing ) Ranch in Sandia. This is my first big year of going to the futurities, said Berry, who thanked God and the Williams Amy and her husband T.J. for the opportunity to train horses. There were so many great trainers in the $uper$takes; it was an honor just to be competing alongside them. I ve never won anything like this. In fact, very few barrel racers have. I still can t believe it, she said. It s hard to put into words. It s a dream come true. It s a moment that you want to live in forever, but it s very humbling at the same time. Williams said they have a few select events on Jess s schedule, but they don t plan on hauling the mare s young legs off. We were just thrilled with the mare, said Berry. It was a huge accomplishment no matter where we ended up. Even with several days post-win behind them, both Berry and Williams still can t believe their good fortune. Scooter turned in a to place fourth on the first competitive run of her career. She followed with an even stronger to take second behind her barn mate, Epic Leader, who was bred, owned and ridden by Mowry. The victory was worth $14, She s a good mare, said Mowry. That ground wasn t the best. I think it made her mad and made her run harder. Chasin s pretty hardcore like that and I think he s putting it in them. She s not the only one I have ridden and they all seem to want to pin their ears back when the pressures on and step up like he does. Scooter was one of five get of Chasin Firewater running in the Juvenile. 24 Monroe Wins Second World Derby With Runnin For A Title The Rundown with Brett Monroe HORSE: Runnin For A Title 2005 Bay Gelding BIT: L&W 5 Bit HEADGEAR: Medium-loose wire tie-down SADDLE: Brett Monroe Signature Series by Jerry Bethune SADDLE PAD: Classic Equine ESP LEG GEAR: Bar F Equine, front only FEED: Triple Crown Complete HAY: Good quality Bermuda SUPPLEMENTS: None ADDITIONAL HORSE CARE: None NOTES: The BFA World Championships have been really good to Brett Monroe. The longtime futurity trainer and rider from Gay, Ga., picked up his second World Derby Championship with a victory aboard Runnin For A Title, owned by the Boyd Ranch of Summit, Miss. He worked great, said Monroe. He made three smooth runs. About the only difference was the ground. He ran on the top of the ground one run and the bottom of the ground the next. It seemed like the ground was a little heavier and he d had a little trouble getting away from his barrels. He really couldn t have been any better. Monroe and Title finished third in the first round with their top of the ground run of , and finished out of the money in 10th in the second. In the Finals, they posted the fastest time, a , to win the average in for total earnings of $7, I feel really fortunate to get to ride that horse, said Monroe, who bought Title as a 2-year-old. He broke and trained the gelding that he sold to his friend Chad Hart as futurity horse. Monroe ran Title for Hart through the gelding s futurity year and half of his derby year before Title sold to the Boyd Ranch in July I sometimes wish I hadn t sold him, Monroe said. He s a lot of fun to ride and has such a sweet disposition. 30 Barrel Racing Blue Chips Future Fortunes crowns 2011 champions in Oklahoma City. By Tanya Randall Special for Future Fortunes A one-time payment of $150 or three payments of $50 once a year for three years. A drop in the proverbial bucket when compared to the simple cost of owning a horse. What if making a $150 one-time payment returned you $9,200, or even $11,700? If you re raising and riding a Future Fortunes horse, that just might be. It pays to ride a Future Fortunes horse. BFA Future Fortunes Champion Recent high school graduate Monica McClung and her talented 4-year-old mare Easy French Alibi ( Fancy ) had a stellar week in Oklahoma City. The duo earned top Future Fortunes honors and finished the reserve champions in the BFA World Championship Futurity, held Dec She did absolutely awesome, said McClung, who won the WPRA Finals Futurity aboard the mare as well. She was really, really consistent all week. By Future Fortunes Champion Sire Frenchmans Guy, Fancy is out of Easy Mag, by Magnificence. She was bred by the GO Racing Partnership of Harthorne, Okla., and owned by McClung s father Robert. Fancy was broke to ride and ridden for three months by Scott Bacon before McClung took over the mare s barrel training. The Future Fortunes bonus totaled $7,830 with $783 going to Bill and Deb Myers on behalf of their stallion Frenchmans Guy and $1,566 going to the Go Racing Partnership. McClung also ended up running Fancy in the Open 4D after she sold the horse she had originally entered. I ran her five times that week, said the May, Okla., resident. She made money all but one run. She ended up winning the first round of the 4D. She handled it like a champ. Her second round in the futurity she got a little slower. She didn t want to fire, so I really had to hustle her on the last run for the short go. I felt bad for her. The BFA Reserve Championship paid $27, and the Open 4D win was worth $2, for total earnings of $37, After that grueling test, Fancy is getting a much needed rest through the month of January, while McClung concentrates on next year s crop of futurity horses. McClung also plans on testing the pro rodeo waters with her open horse Guys Voodoo Bug, also by Frenchmans Guy. It s quite possible that Fancy will join her paternal brother on the rodeo road someday. I think I m going to keep her and make her a rodeo horse, she said. I don t really feel like selling her just yet. Fortunes Round Champion Twice is definitely nice, especially when you re winning the lucrative Fortunes Round for the second. Kelsey Deal first won the Fortunes Round in 2006 with Dialaroosterforcash. In 2011, it was his full brother Vegas Or Bust carrying her to that honor. We were excited that they both won it, said Debra Deal, Kelsey s mother, who owns Vegas Or Bust. Deal and Vegas s just bested Jordan Briggs and A Special Colours for the $25,000 first-place check. Both geldings are by Cash Not Credit out of the blue hen mare Nancy Ann Smith, by R Smith. That s our magic cross, said Debra. Kelsey has ridden four Dialaroosterforcash, 9; Hezanuther Rooster, 14; Rooster Cashin In, 7; and Vegas Or Bust, 4. All were bred by Jud Little and sired by Cash Not Credit with the exception of Hezanuther Rooster. She s rode all four of them this year and has probably won about $50,000 on them, so she s done really good on them. The Deals went to Jud Little s production with full intentions of buying Vegas, who was a yearling at the time, because of their success with Dialaroosterforcash. Incidentally, Little received $2,500 on behalf of Cash Not Credit courtesy of Vegas Fortunes Round victory. Little had already paid Vegas into the Future Fortunes program, a mere $150 fee to pay in full as a weanling, and the Deals paid him into the Fortunes Round at the BFA World Championships. The Fortunes Round championship is determined by the best of time from the two qualifying rounds in the BFA Futurity. Only 50 slot holders were able to nominate horses for the Fortunes Round and their horses had to be nominated in fall of their 3-year-old year. The total Fortunes Round purse was $47,500. In addition to the Fortunes Round victory, Kelsey and Vegas picked up $2,835 in Future Fortunes bonus money from the BFA Futurity. Of that total, Little gets $ for owning Cash Not Credit and $567 for breeding Vegas. Kelsey, 24, who works as a dental assistant, trains her own horses. She and her mother typically buy yearlings and 2-year-olds and send them to Phil Haugen for breaking before Kelsey takes over all their training. She s not a professional trainer, said Debra, she just rides for us. She is going to try to rodeo professionally this next year. Kelsey also placed fourth the Fortunes Round with another horse she and her mom purchased from Little Smashed in Paris. The fourth-place finish was worth $2,500, while a seventh-place finish in the BFA Future Fortunes bonus netted $2,970 with $ going to Bill and Deb Myers on behalf of sire Frenchmans Guy and $405 going to Little as the breeder. Amateur & Rookie Champion Jayma Jo Shomaker and SF Its Ez Bn French ( Fredrick ) picked up $2,500 in Future Fortunes cash at the BFA World Championships. First, they collected $1,500 of the $5,000 JEH Equine Reproductive Services Future Fortunes Amateur pot and won a championship saddle, courtesy of JB Quarter Horses. The Amateur Champion was determined on an aggregate of the two qualifying runs in the BFA Futurity. They weren t his best runs at all, said Shomaker, who manages breeding operations at Shomaker Farm in McKenzie, Tenn., for her parents Ronnie and Martha Shomaker. I was just fortunate enough that they had the sidepots to help me out. I sat on the 50th bubble until the very last horse run in the futurity and they bumped me to 51st. So, I didn t get to come back in the futurity and that made having the amateur deal so much better. Shomaker, who was competing in the futurity for the very first time, also won the $1,000 Rookie Championship and a belt buckle. 31 Future Fortunes Continued From Page 30 He has done real well for me all year, said Shomaker, who also won the Amateur at Jud Little s Bar Nothin Barrel Bash Futurity. Future Fortunes has helped me out all year long. Any place I ve been, it s helped pay my way. Of course, being a breeder it helps even more. It s a very good program. Shomaker raised Fred, a 4-year-old gelding by Frenchmans Feature, a son of Frenchmans Guy out of the multiple futurity finalist and Albracht Jones Barrel Futurity Champion Miss Big Feature, by Alamitos Feature. The Shomakers bought Frenchmans Feature as a 2-year-old from Brian Fulton, owner of Future Fortunes stallion A Streak Of Fling. They also raised Fred s dam SF Shoot Me Straight, a daughter of the late Shoot Yeah, whom the Shomakers also owned and stood at stud. There were two full sisters, Shomaker explained. I knew that I wanted to keep one by Shoot Yeah for a broodmare. We had so many babies that year we broke her out and rode her a little bit and just decided to put her in broodmare band. With her duties managing her own breeding operation as well those for outside stallions keeping her busy throughout the spring, Shomaker tries to do most of her hauling in late summer and fall. I have to play everything by ear in the spring because I never know when a mare s going to need to be bred at the last minute, she said. I started hauling really hard in September when I went out to Jud s. (Fredrick) just started doing really good and I hauled him all fall. He s going to get a few well deserved weeks off and then go back at it. Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion Ryann Pedone has had a dream year with her homegrown superstar Kiss This Guy ( Tyson ). They ended the year fourth in the BFA World Championship Futurity and fourth in the BFA Future Fortunes Bonus. Pedone, who raised and trained Tyson, was also honored as the Future Fortunes Owner/Breeder/Rider Champion. Tyson s story starts in Florida with Pedone s father, who bought his dam Kiss Kiss This, by Chain Of Events, from Kappie Nelson and Jody Dorman. When knee issues started plaguing the mare, Pedone bought Kiss Kiss This from her father and made her the foundation of her breeding program. Pedone bred Kiss Kiss This to BHR Frenchies Socks, an up-andcoming young son of Frenchmans Guy out of BHR Missys Socks, by Can He Go. The rough-and-tumble colt, who earned the name Tyson as a weanling for blacking Pedone s eye, really came on at the end of the year, earning championships at the JB Quarter Horses Futurity and WinMore open, just to name a few. Although purchased by first-time Wrangler National Finals Rodeo qualifier Carlee Pierce after the Bar Nothin Barrel Bash in September, Tyson remained in Pedone s name through the BFA thus enabling her to claim the owner/breeder/rider title. Pedone and Tyson also collected $4,320 in bonus money at the BFA event, with $ of that total going to Crystal Shumate, owner of BHR Frenchies Socks. All totaled, Pedone and Tyson, who were the Future Fortunes Champions at the LG Pro Classic Futurity, won $9,197 in Future Fortunes bonus money during his futurity career. Champion Breeder Jud Little s great breeding program produced five Future Fortunes bonus money earners of $11,185. Little s breeder s share was $2,237. He was also awarded a silver vase. His senior stallion Cash Not Credit, now pensioned, sired the Fortunes Round Champion Vegas Or Bust ($2,835 in regular bonus earnings), Cash Not Corona ($3,000) and Whole Lotta Cashin ($315). Bug In My Frosty, his up-and-coming junior stallion, sired Frosty Magnolia Bug ($3,010). Future Fortunes Continued on Page 32 BARREL RACING REPORT DECEMBER 13, 2011 PAGE 31

Champion Sire & Broodmare Bill and Deb Myers great stallion Frenchmans Guy was the leading Future Fortunes sire with nine get earning $22, The Myers, St. Onge, S.D., collected $2, of that total on behalf of their great palomino stallion. Frenchmans Guy also received a silver halter for the honor. Frenchmans Guys leading bonus money earner was BFA Future Fortunes Champion Easy French Alibi with $7,830. Other get earning bonus checks on behalf of the stallion were Frenchies Gottheguns ($3, in total bonus earnings), Smashed In Paris ($2,970), French Riviera ($2,970), Rock On Rita ($1,920), Guys Famous Girl ($1,350), Guys Champagne Girl ($1,080), Briscosfrenchbullion ($490) and Guys Dream Girl ($240). The Myers also owned Future Fortunes Champion Broodmare French Wild Heart, whose two offspring earned $12,333. Sired by Frenchmans Guy, French Wild Heart is out of the proven producing mare Wild Heart Tu, by Elkman (TB). Wild Heart Tu is the producer of barrel futurity finalists JKT Sadies Wild Man, JKT Driftin Tu Love and French Heart Tu, a full sister to French Wild Heart. The Myers received a marble trophy for their mare s accomplishment. French Wild Heart s leading Future Fortunes offspring was Jordan Brigg s A Special Colour. The 4-year-old mare by Hot Colours was the Future Fortunes Champion at the Beth Cooper Memorial Futurity and picked up Future Fortunes bonuses at the Old Fort Days Futurity, Fizz Bomb Classic and BFA World Championships for total earnings of $11,713. Of that total, the Myers collected $1, on behalf of their stallion Hot Colours and $2,231 as the breeders of A Special Colour. Wild Colours, a 2006 mare by Hot Colours out of French Wild Heart, also earned $620 at the Beth Cooper Memorial. The mare is owned by the BAJ Living Trust and ridden by Barbara Johnson. About Future Fortunes Since its inception in 2004, Future Fortunes has awarded more than $1.2 million in bonus money to eligible futurity and open horses. Foal nominations are do now! The grace period ends on December 31. If materials aren t in hand by the 31st, late fees will apply.
