August match The August match came off without a hitch, if you do not consider the heat and humidity. No one really complained about it, but most of us had very few dry spots on our clothing. Although, we did have a little pop-up shower right after lunch as we were beginning our third shooting stage. This gave a little respite from the heat even though the breeze was more of a teaser breeze than a real breeze. For really good news, cowboys Big Mel and Desperado Dale joined us. Desperado Dale shot the match and seemed to not been slowed down too much. Big Mel did not shoot, mainly because he was riding herd on about 4 young shooters and a guest/friend. A couple of them were first time CAS shooters. Both of these cowboys have had some recent health issues. It was really good to see them out the range again. See you next month cowboys. Eight Finger came out to the range during lunch time to visit and do a little trophy recycling. He has not shot with us for some time due to health issues, but he is doing much better, misses the CAS shooting, and hopes to be back shooting with us as soon as possible. Mad Dane reported on the meeting between the Panhandle Cowboys and ERGC s Charlie Miller, (also known as Panhandle Cowboy Charlie Goodnight) the designer of improvements being made to the ERGC range. The meeting concerned the changes planned for Range 4b and the new range 5. Basically, the planned improvements to Range 4b or 5 will be more Panhandle Cowboys friendly than is Range 2, our present shooting range. The new range will be include an ERGC supplied storage container for our props and targets and will have a larger parking area, as well as a covered administration area and a covered shooting area. Mad Dane indicated the only down side would be moving our props and targets to the new container. So, at some point, strong-backed volunteers, and transportation, will be solicited for moving our props and targets. (Hopefully on a cooler day than our August match day.) Charlie Miller also stated he wants our input regarding the layout of the new range s shooting sheds, storage, rest room facilities and parking areas. We told him the Cowboys BOD would get together and work up our plans and requirements. High Card came out after the lunch break, which started at 10:30am, to handle match scoring. 2
Sammy Jo and Cassidy Jane took care of match sign-up. By the way, Sammy Jo did not shoot due a recent surgery to her right hand, but she did unloading table duties for Posse 2 as well as sign-up duties, and she helped High Card with match scoring. She was a busy lady. Good job Sammy Jo! Also, Cassidy Jane helped High Card with inputting of the scores. Jeb Stuart came out to the match but did not shoot. He did handle posse scoring for Posse 2. Jimmy Rainsong s wife, Suellen, joined us again. She handle posse scoring for Posse 1. Sure would be great to have her start shooting with us. Navajo Kid brought his trailer for match set-up and take-down. Due to the changes made to Range 2 it is a little more difficult to get to the pickup and utility trailer to the container. It was not an insurmountable problem just difficult. Charlie Miller indicated he would do what he could to solve the problem. Thanks to all who donated door prizes, and a really special THANKS goes to everyone who handled match set-up and take-down in the heat and humidity. AUGUST SIDE MATCH It was too hot for a side match cowboys and cowgirls. SEPTEMBER SIDE MATCH Nothing scheduled for September, but hopefully, the weather will be more pleasant and we can do a long range pistol, or rifle, or shotgun side match. CHRISTMAS PARTY Sammy Jo had no additional information on the Christmas Party and Raffle. The banquet room at Sonny s BBQ on Navy Boulevard has been reserved on December 7, at 5pm. This date is the evening before our December match. Two quilts will be available for the raffle. One will be made by Cassidy Jane and the other will be made by Gundy s wife. As mentioned in last month s Gazette, Jimmy Rainsong has donated two pistols for the raffle, and Dal Sackett says he sees no reason why the Panhandle Cowboys cannot raise $3, this year for the Marine Corps Toys for Tots program. Cowboy lexicon Okay, this month we use lines from cowboy movies and TV shows, so chew on some of the below phrases. Coloring it up a little bit Exaggerate 3
Surgeon with a six-gun Fast and accurate with a six-gun I ll be a cross-eyed coyote I m surprised Nail me up to a barn door I m surprised I know a good place to Winchester em I know a good place to shoot them. They re in a tangle They are fighting A man s tongue works like a shovel; sometimes it can dig his own grave You talk too much Just as clear as mud in a sand storm Confusing Wouldn t trust him as far as I can throw my horse Do not trust this guy Root down To settle down and stop moving from place to place JAMES DRURY PHOTO As you have noticed at the end of the Gazette there is a photo of a cowboy(s) being used instead of the drawing used previously. At the end of the July Gazette was an autographed picture of James Drury, best known as The Virginian. I (Rocky Lane) have been asked to provide some background on the photo, so here goes. When I attended the Fourth Annual (1999) The Beginning of Trail Shootout at Mule Camp (Southeast Regional Championship), James Drury was the celebrity guest cowboy in attendance. He not only shot the match, he had a table set up where you could get autographed pictures and converse with him. At one point in my shooting schedule, I was able to amble over to his table for an autographed picture and a brief conversation. Even though our conversation was brief, I discovered he is a strong supporter of the Second Amendment, Cowboy Action Shooting, and the shooting sports in general. He expressed a deep concern about the direction our Country was heading. In other words, he was pretty much like us; regular people with regular people s concerns. Yes, the inscription and autograph and picture really came from James Drury. I was proud and pleased to have met him. 4

JULY COWBOY Our July Cowboy was born Enos Edward Canutt, on November 29, 1895 in Snake River Hills, Washington. He was brought up on the family ranch where he learned to hunt, trap, shoot, and ride. At age 11 he broke a wild horse. At age 16 he was 6 in height. At age 17 he won the title of World s Best Bronco Buster at the Whitman County Fair in Colfax, Washington in In 1914, he was rodeoing with guys from Yakima, Washington. He, of course, was not from Yakima, but during a drinking, bragging session at the Pendleton, Oregon, Pendleton Round- Up, his Yakima buddies wanted to prove how well they could ride a bucking bronco. His buddies were thrown from their horses, and wanting to support his buddies, he got on a bucking bronco named Miss Wiggs and was promptly thrown. A newspaper photographer took a picture as he was in the air between the saddle and the ground and the photo was captioned, Yakima Canutt leaving the deck of Miss Wiggs. From then on he was known as Yakima Canutt. From 1914 to 1923 Yakima Canutt was in the major rodeo circuit. His specialty was bronc riding and bulldogging, but he also did some roping. In 1919 he went to Los Angeles for a rodeo and met Tom Mix, a former rodeo competitor, and he asked Yak to be in two of his movies. He also got his taste of stunt work in a fight scene in the serial Lighting Brice. Yakima Canutt left Hollywood in 1920 to rejoin the rodeo circuit. In 1915 he placed second in the saddle-bronc competition in Pendleton, Oregon; he won in 1917, 1919 and He won steer bulldogging in 1920 and In1917, 1919, 1920 and 1923 he won the Police Gazette belt. In Fort Worth, Texas, he won the saddle-bronc competition in 1921, 1922 and He was in Hollywood in 1923 for an awards ceremony and was offered a deal for eight western movies by Burwillow Studios; the first film was Riding Mad. (A search for Burwillow Studios revealed nothing.) While filming the western Branded a Bandit (Burwillow Studios) his nose was broken while taking a fall from a 12 foot cliff. Filming was delayed a few weeks and all of Yaks close-ups were taken from the side. Afterwards, his nose was reset. Yak said he liked his nose better after it healed. Yakima Canutt resumed the rodeo circuit in 1927, and he did stunt work in the 1927 film The Gaucho staring Douglas Fairbanks. The stunt was the Crupper Mount; a leap frog action going over the rump of a horse into the saddle. This stunt became an action staple in a great many B- westerns. Talkies were coming to the motion picture industry in Yakima Canutt had appeared in 48 silent movies by now and believed his career was in trouble as his voice had been damaged by the flu while he was in the Navy during World War I. Even though he believed his career was going to decline with his damaged 6
voice he started taking bit parts in films and continued his stunt work. During his tenure as a stunt man he realized the stunts being done in films could be improved, made more realistic, and made safer. For instance, in the five years between 1925 and 1930 fifty-five people were killed while making movies, and there were ten thousand injuries. During his career as a stunt man Yakima Canutt instituted the practice of rehearsing stunts, he developed equipment to make stunts safer, and developed new stunts, the most spectacular of which (see photo on page 6) was employed in the 1937 film Riders of the Dawn staring Jack Randall. (Jack Randall and Bob Livingston (Stony Brooke) of Three Mesquiteers fame were brothers.) (Photo above shows Bob Livingston and Yakima Canutt in foreground and in background perhaps Max Terhune.) If you have not seen that 1937 film, the same action stunt was used in the 1939 film that make John Wayne a major movie star; the film was Stagecoach. The scene has John Wayne s character on the stagecoach tongue between the two lead horses; he then falls on the ground between the horses, works his way down the stagecoach tongue, then underneath the stagecoach, then coming from underneath the stagecoach onto the back of the stagecoach. This same stunt was used in the 1981 action movie Raiders of the Lost Ark starring Harrison Ford. Remember the action sequence where Indiana Jones is on the front of a German Army transport truck, and Indy goes underneath the truck, is dragged underneath the truck, and then comes up on the back of the truck? And, no, John Wayne did not do the stunt in Stagecoach, and Harrison Ford did not do the stunt in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Speaking of John Wayne, Yakima Canutt taught him to do many of his stunts when, and after, they worked together in the 1932 movie The Shadow of the Eagle. Yak and Duke developed the 7
technique of throwing a punch and making it look realistic, and they developed many of the fight techniques still in use today in the motion picture and television industry. At one point, John Wayne said he had spent weeks studying Yakima Canutt; the way he walked, the way he spoke (not his voice, but his manner of speech), and adopted these characteristics as his own. In 1934, Herbert J. Yates, who owned Consolidated Film Industries, combined Monogram, Mascot, Liberty, Majestic, Chesterfield, and Invincible Pictures into Republic Pictures. Yakima Canutt was working for Mascot at the time and became the top stunt man for Republic. He became so important to Republic that when action was required in one of their films, the script did not contain an actual description of the action needed; the script simply referred the director of the film to see Yakima Canutt for all the action sequences. (The photos at left show Yakima Canutt doubling for Harry Carey, Sr., in the Mascot 1932 film The Devil Horse.) Even though Yakima Canutt developed the practice of rehearsing stunts, especially dangerous stunts, he suffered a number of injuries. One injury occurred in the 1936 film San Francisco when he doubled for Clark Gable in a scene where a wall was to fall on Clark Gable s character. A heavy table was placed in a specific spot for him to get under as the wall fell. As the wall began falling one of the actresses in the scene became hysterical, and Yakima Canutt grabbed her and leaped for the table. The actress made it, he didn t. Chalk up six broken ribs for Yakima Canutt. In 1940, again doubling for Clark Gable, in the film Boom Town he suffered serious internal injuries. In 1943 he broke both legs at the ankle in a fall from a wagon in the Roy Rogers film Idaho. In 1940 Yakima Canutt began his career as a Second Unit Director, sometimes credited, sometimes not credited. He directed the action sequences in the film Dark Command. In 1952 he went to England to direct the action sequences in Ivanhoe starring Robert Taylor. In the process he taught English stunt men the Hollywood stunt way. Another Robert Taylor film, Knights of the Round Table had the action sequences director by Yakima Canutt. Possibly the most spectacular direction and stunt coordination in the Yakima Canutt resume was his work on the film Ben-Hur starring Charlton Heston. He trained Heston and costar Stephen Boyd to do chariot racing. The chariot race scenes took five months to complete. The only injury during the production of this film was when one of Yakima Canutts sons (he had three 8
sons, all in the stunt business) cut his chin while doubling for Heston in the scene where Judah Ben-Hur s chariot bounced over a wrecked chariot. His son did not follow dad s advice and learned a lesson the easy way. Some of the other films in which Yakima Canutt was involved in as the Second Unit Director and/or stunt coordinator were: Swiss Family Robinson, El Cid, The Fall of the Roman Empire, Cat Ballou, Khartoum, Where Eagles Dare, and A Man Called Horse. Yakima Canutt received the following awards: National Board of Review of the Motion Pictures Special Citation (shared with Andrew Marton) for directing the chariot race in Ben-Hur. Academy Honorary Award for achievement as a stunt man and for developing safety devices to protect stunt men everywhere. Inducted into National Cowboy Hall of Fame. Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences A Tribute of Yakima Canutt dinner. The Motion Picture & Television Fund s Golden Boot Award. Hollywood Walk of Fame star at 1500 Vine Street. Yakima Canutt had a remarkable career for a man who was only able to get an elementary school education. Yakima Canutt passed away on May 24, Jeb Stuart identified Yakima Canutt as our July Cowboy. AUGUST COWBOY The cowboy for this month spoke seven languages. He graduated magna cum laude with a business degree from City College of New York, later he received a law degree from George Washington University. From 1949, the beginning of his motion picture and television career, to 1965 he had appeared in only two western TV programs and no western movies; an episode of Laramie and an episode of Bonanza. However, he had appeared in seven episodes of Treasury Men in Action (remember that one) from 1950 to 1954, and thirty-four episodes of Mr. Lucky portraying the character Andamo. If you can identify this cowboy, give Rocky Lane a ring at winchesteraa@cox.net. 9
News from North of the Border Alabama Way called High Card to chat. He reported that they were having a very hot summer as were we, but added that it also included a large mosquito problem. As big as they were reported to be High Card inquired about using them for aerial targets.but bullets over the berm issues negated that idea. He also stated that he and Mo M Down would be getting back down this way about a month later than normal, something about insurance issues. He said for us to look for them in November. GUN SHOW The gun show at the Pensacola Interstate Fairgrounds was busy and Mad Dane reports ammunition and reloading components were available. Mad Dane, Capn Bobbie D, and Wild Country handled the Panhandle Cowboys tables on Saturday. On Sunday, Sammy Jo and Cassidy Jane joined them in the promotion of Cowboy Action Shooting. Good job cowboys and cowgirls. ADIOS This is pretty much it for now cowpokes. Be safe and shoot straight. 10
