Coaches and riders should confirm their eligibility with the IEA membership office before submitting entries.
3 Western Individual Class Descriptions Horsemanship Classes W1I. Varsity Open Horsemanship: Riders who have competed at nationally qualifying competitions such as, but not limited to, youth team or world show qualifying competitions. Also, riders who have won NRHA or AQHA world top 5 placing or any rider with a top 5 placing at the All American Quarter Horse Congress, Paint, appaloosa, and other breed show equivalents. Showmanship, halter, hunt seat, and contest classes are excluded. These riders should be capable of performing western tests W2I. Varsity Intermediate Horsemanship: These riders are those who have won 5 or more blue ribbons in western horsemanship or reining in breed or National Reining Horse associations, for example: Quarter Horse, Paint, and Appaloosa and NRHA shows. These riders should be capable of performing western tests 1-8. W3I. Junior Varsity Novice Horsemanship: These riders may have shown at open shows and non-breed specific shows, for example, 4H events and county fairs. These riders should be capable of performing western tests 1-6. W4I. Junior Varsity Beginner Horsemanship: Open to riders who are not eligible for Novice level classes, but should be experienced enough to walk, jog and lope an unfamiliar animal in a group. These riders should be capable of performing Western tests 1-6 and may have participated in camp shows and in-house farm shows. Riders may not have shown at a lope in more than five (5) open shows (i.e. 4H events and county fairs) and non-breed specific shows. To be eligible for class 4, riders must have at least one year continuous professional instruction, must demonstrate proficiency at a jog and lope, and must be capable of competing on a variety of unfamiliar horses. A Walk/Jog class is now an optional offering and is open only to those riders competing in the Walk/Jog/Lope class. Entry fees will be collected but no individual or team points will be awarded. The intent is not to accommodate lower level riders. Competitors in W/J must meet eligibility requirements of Western Class 4 and must compete in the W/J/L class. W5I. Future Intermediate Horsemanship: Restricted to middle school riders who meet the criteria for Western Horsemanship Class 2 and/or are capable of performing western tests 1-8. W6I. Future Novice Horsemanship: Restricted to middle school riders who meet the criteria for Western Horsemanship Class 3 and/or who are capable of performing western tests 1-6. W7I. Future Beginner Horsemanship: Restricted to middle school riders who meet the criteria for Western Horsemanship Class 4. These riders should be capable of performing western tests 1-6. Reining Classes W8I. NRHA Varsity Open Reining: Restricted to those riders competing in the Varsity Open Horsemanship. Riders participating in Varsity Open Reining are expected to compete throughout the season in Varsity Open Horsemanship. 5 Western Horsemanship Tests A western judge may choose from the following horsemanship tests. Any one or combination of appropriate or equivalent tests may be used. 1. Ask an appropriate horsemanship question that is tailored to the rider s ability level. 2. Individual performance on the rail. 3. Halt and/or back 4. Figure eight at the jog 5. Change horses 6. Lope on specific lead and stop degree turn 8. Figure eight at the lope, demonstrating a change of lead (through the walk or jog) 9. Ride without stirrups 10. Simple change of leads in a straight line 11. Counter canter Horseman s Knowledge Test (no entry fee) The Horseman s Knowledge Test is offered to promote good horsemanship among IEA equestrian athletes. It is intended to compliment the IEA s mission to educate younger equestrians in all areas of equestrian studies and focuses on the belief that horsemanship always comes first. Warren Evans How to Participate: 1. The National Test will be available to all IEA members attending the IEA National Finals and will be administered on Thursday, location to be announced. (See time schedule.) There is no entry fee to take the test and participation in National Finals is not required. 2. The top three highest scoring exhibitors will be invited to a hands-on Horsemanship Test on Thursday afternoon of the competition-approximately 5:00pm. 3. The winner receiving the highest overall score will receive a trophy and a $250 monetary grant to further their equestrian education + additional awards. Awards will be given to the top 8 in high school and the top 8 in middle school. Awards will be announced on Friday during the afternoon ceremony.

Competitors such as Shawn Flarida, Andrea Fappani, Craig Schmersal, Tim McQuay, and Tom McCutcheon will come from all parts of the globe for a chance to take a piece of the prize. 10 General Rules Responsibility: In exchange for entrance to and participation in the show, this entry constitutes an agreement and affirmation that the team making it, and each of its riders, coaches, trainers, and representatives shall accept and abide by the Rules and Regulations of the IEA and of the Show, and that each rider, coach and Team: (1) is a member in good standing of IEA, (2) is eligible as entered, and (3) will accept as final all rulings of IEA and the show steward (or committee) with respect to their conduct. Also, through participation each rider, rider s parents/legal guardians, coach, trainer, and participant acknowledges THAT HORSES ARE INTRINSICALLY DANGEROUS AND UNPREDICTABLE AND CAN CAUSE SERIOUS INJURY OR DEATH, thus each agrees to indemnify, defend and hold harmless IEA, its officers, directors, members, employees, Executive Director, National Steward, agents and representatives, the Event Host Coordinator, the host team and facility, the show stewards, stewards committee members, the show judges, the show secretary, all show organizers and officials, and all persons, stables, and others providing facilities, horses or equipment for the Show, other riders, coaches, teams and team sponsoring institutions, from any claim, action or suit, for injury, property damage or death sustained by the individual, rider, entity, coach, trainer, or participant while traveling to, from and around the show, while staying in the city for the show, during participation in the show and while at the show. This entry constitutes an acceptance of the hired officials at this event. Entries: Entries will not be accepted without an IEA number listed for each rider. Entries will be considered received only with full payment. Entries will open immediately upon electronic distribution of prize list. Entries will close, and must be received by June 3, Each individual rider will be charged $50 per class, each team rider will be charged $50 per class. Scratches can be made with full refund before closing date. Checks should be made payable to Interscholastic Equestrian Association. A confirmation will be sent upon receipt of entries; please include a valid address in the space provided on the entry form for this purpose. NRHA Sportsmanship Award Each team represented may nominate one entered rider for the Sportsmanship Award. This rider will wear an armband and entry number throughout the weekend, and at the conclusion of National Finals the judging committee will announce the winner of the Sportsmanship Award. One rider for each named team may be nominated. Format: The general format will follow the Rules and Regulations as established by the IEA unless otherwise stated. However, if a topic is not covered by these Rules and Regulations, the rules and regulations of the Intercollegiate Horse Show Association [ IHSA ] and the United States Equestrian Federation, Inc. [ USEF ] for the Hunt Seat Division and the American Quarter Horse Association [AQHA ] and the National Reining Horse Association [ NRHA ] for the Western Division may be used as a reference for guidance in making an equitable decision under the circumstances. Any decisions made by a steward or show management shall be final. Horses and Order of Go will be assigned by a random draw on the day of competition. All classes will be judged on equitation, and faults of the horse will not be judged. If a horse should perform so poorly that it is impossible to fairly judge the rider, the judge may request a re-ride. Any other requests for re-rides will be determined by the steward. -It is mandatory for all riders to use appropriate western attire while showing; this would include a long sleeve shirt, western hat or safety helmet, and boots. Failure to use appropriate attire will result in a score of zero. Spurs will not be allowed on ANY beginner rider. Awards: -The Champion Western Rider Award will be given to the high point rider of the Individual Varsity Open Horsemanship and Varsity Open Reining classes. -Team Championship: Each team will designate one point rider for each class in the Varsity and Junior Varsity and Future divisions. Different riders may be designated for horsemanship and reining classes. High Point Teams will be placed through eighth place. -NRHA Sportsmanship Award will be given to the individual chosen by show official to exemplify outstanding qualities of good sportsmanship at the IEA National Finals. -The Team Spirit Award will be given to the team who best exemplifies overall sportsmanship and enthusiasm. -Horseman s Knowledge Test: See details within class descriptions. -High Point Crossover Rider will go to the rider with the most combined points between hunt seat and western classes. -NRHA Outstanding Western Horse will be chosen by the judges.
11 Senior Scholarships: The highest placing senior/12th grade rider AND the second highest placing senior/12th grade rider from each of the individual rider classes will be awarded scholarship money as follows: Open Horsemanship $1000 / $500 Open Reining $1000 / $500 Intermediate Horsemanship $600 / $300 Intermediate Reining $600 / $300 Novice Horsemanship $500 / $250 Beginner Horsemanship $500 / $250 Scholarship checks will be mailed to the rider s home address on/before July 31, Questions: Call 877-RIDE-IEA Entries should be sent to: IEA Membership Secretary 414 Main St., Suite C Melrose, MA Schooling: Please note designated schooling times for horsemanship and reining horses. Schooling sessions will be supervised by a designated member of the show committee. No rider that is showing in the IEA Nationals may school any horse on the show grounds unless they have finished all possible phases of competition. All schooling riders must wear identifying armbands that are available in the show office. Sportsmanship The IEA was established to provide competitive and educational opportunities through equestrian athletics. Good horsemanship and honorable participation are priorities at every event. It is the responsibility of all attendees to foster a spirit of belongingness, an atmosphere of community enjoyment, and a mutual respect for all participants. All attendees must commit to the following oath: Oath: In representation of the participants at this event, I promise to respect and abide by the governing rules of the Interscholastic Equestrian Association and to represent myself, my team, and this association in the spirit of good horsemanship and honorable competition. Entries received after June 3 will not be accepted. While a confirmation will be sent upon receipt of entries as a courtesy, it is each coach s responsibility to ensure that their entries have been received in a timely fashion. The IEA recommends that entries be sent via certified mail with a return receipt or through some other guaranteed delivery service.
