Brad Alexander finished 12th in 3000 meter steeplechase and Jerry Goodwin 15th in shot put. Also participating at nationals were Brian Estes in the 100 and 200 meters and Kirby White in the 3000 meter steeplechase School records set by Estes in the 100 (10.84) and 200 (21.84) meters, Engelhardt in the 10,000 walk (45:57.1) and Hopper in the triple jump (49-9 1/4) Engelhardt and Hopper named NAIA National Scholar Athletes 1989 Coach: Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell Tony Engelhardt placed second (44:56.0) in the 10,000 race walk to earn NAIA All-America honors. Also participating at nationals were Kirby White in the 3,000 meter steeplechase (10th), Jerry Hopper in the triple jump (11th), Todd McAllister in the high jump (14th) and Jeff Brink in the javelin (DNP). 12 1990 Coach: Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell Tied for 58th at NAIA National meet John Deremiah placed sixth (32:14.77) in 10,000 meters to earn NAIA All-America honors. Also participating were Dennis James in hammer (9th, 162-6), Kevin Beason in hammer (14th, 157-8), Todd Baerny in 1500 (10th, 3:58.64), Craig Hanson in 1500, Brooke Svoboda in 800, K.C. Knudson in 400 hurdles, Christian Salas in triple jump (12th, /2), and Michael Gates in marathon (3:00:48) Placed 2nd in NAIA District 1 meet School records set by Todd Baerny in the 800 (1:52.58) and 1500 (3:47.66) meters and Dennis James in the hammer throw (179-5) Gates named NAIA Scholar-Athlete 1991 Coach: Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell John Deremiah placed second (30:59) in the 10,000 meters and Dennis James third (174-5) in the hammer throw to earn NAIA All-America honors. School records set by Deremiah in 10,000 (30:12.50) and James in hammer (187-2) 1992 Coach: Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell Placed 1st in NAIA District 1 meet Jeff VanKleeck placed sixth (14:41.86) in the 5,000 meters to earn NAIA All-America honors. Nels Postma was 18th in 10,000 (32:25.07), Brent Roberts 26th in discus (140-3), Steve Wyant 29th in marathon (2:59:51). Ron Olson cleared 6-8 in high jump, Mike McGarry did not clear opening height in pole vault, and the 4x400 relay of Theron Davis, Michael Flynn, Matt Blank and Greg Halberg did not compete. Halsell named District 1 men's Coach of the Year Postma named NAIA National Scholar-Athlete McGarry in pole vault, Postma in 10,000 and 4x400 relay were victorious at district meet. School record set by Van Kleeck in 3,000 (8:25.7) 1993 Coach: Kelven "Pee Wee" Halsell Eric Heathershaw placed third (9:13.94) in 3,000 meter steeplechase, Jeff Van Kleeck fourth in 5,000 meters and Marc Hill, John Armeni, Theron Davis and Greg Halberg fifth in 4x400 meter relay to earn NAIA All-America honors. Brent Fazio was ninth in javelin, while Jack Warner was fifth in 110 meter hurdle trials and Peter Myers fifth in 400 meter hurdle trials. Heathershaw in steeplechase and Michael McGarry in pole vault were victorious at district meet. 13 Placed 32nd in NAIA National meet Scott Easley placed fourth (54-9 1/4) in shot put at nationals to earn NAIA All-America honors. Marc Hill was seventh in 400, Ryan Simicich was 11th in hammer, Jim Brewer 13th in 10,000 meters and Kent Stoddard 16th in hammer. Also competing were Oscar Myre in 800, Joshua Coleson in 400 hurdles, Steve Grichel in 800, Scott Dobner in 5,000 and 4x400 relay team of Paul Delaney, Jason Young, Myre and Coleson. 21 Head Coach: Pee Wee Halsell GNAC Championships Finish: 2nd The Vikings placed 2nd at the GNAC Championships for the second consecutive season the team title came down to the last event of the meet as the Vikings finished with 132 points, just shy of the 134 points scored by the University of Alaska Anchorage GNAC individual titles were won by sophomore Alex Barry (javelin), junior Isaac Derline (5,000m) and freshman Cordell Cummings (400m hurdles) Barry (javelin) and Brandon Pless (shot put and discus) earned USTFCCCA All-West Region honors (top 5 marks in region) the Vikings added 10 new entries to the WWU top 10 lists among the entries, senior Ryan McArthur recorded the 4th-best 400m time (48.28) and Brandon Pless recorded top 10 marks in three events, each ranking No. 3 shot put (16.15m/53-0), discus (51.37m/168-6) and hammer (54.98m/180-4) shot put mark (8th) and discus mark (9th) were both among GNAC top 10 as well senior Gordie Kordas tied for the 6th-best pole vault mark (4.80m/15-9) while Barry posted the 6th-best javelin mark (62.30m/204-4), also ranking No. 15 in GNAC history senior Cody McCranie posted the 7th-best 1,500m time (3:53.17) while Cummings posted the 7th-best 400m hurdles time (53.97) sophomore Dylan Hayes added the 10th-best 3,000m steeplechase time (9:17.33) while Derline recorded the 10th-best 5,000m time (14:48.86) Pless was twice named the GNAC Men s Field Athlete of the Week during the 2017 outdoor season while sophomore Jacob Ringold also earned the honor once and sophomore Peter Butler was honored once as the GNAC Men s Track Athlete of the Week WWU was named the GNAC/Red Lion Team of the Week on March 1 Barry, Kordas and senior Andrew Wise were each named CoSIDA Academic All-District Track & Field / Cross Country honorees with Wise earning the honor the second consecutive year 13 WWU men s track & field student-athletes had GPAs of 3.2 or better to be named to the GNAC All-Academic team Kordas was named the co-recipient of the WWU Male Scholar Athlete of the Year Award.
