2 Expanding the Triathlon Market TTF Triathlon 101 Recap In an attempt to continue growing the sport we love, for the 3rd year in a row, we hosted a Triathlon 101 on April 9 at The Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. If you can remember, we all have a "my first triathlon story", and we are encouraging the TTF Community to pull others into our sport so they can have their own "first story". We wanted to thank our esteemed panelists: Lisa Drake (Toronto Triathlon Club) James Corcoran (Coach, Toronto Athletic Club) Dave Buzanko (Wellness Expert, HeartFit365) Ryan Duffield (TTF Ambassador) Chelsea Mohler (Triathlete with Vision Loss) And thanks to panel moderator, and TTF Race Announcer, Steve Fleck, for keeping things on track for everyone during the event! Before and after the panel discussion participants had a chance to interact with setups from TTF Community Partners: D'Ornellas, nuun and Dig Deep Cycling. We love our sport and know you do too. On the following two pages, we highlight some clinics that might be of interest to your friends and family - it could help them ease into triathlon. Please share!

3 THANKS, COACH: Tips from Jason Hervey of TRI-TRAIN Taking the I out of TRI So, you ve decided this is going to be the year to run your first triathlon now what? Consider joining a group. The TRI-TRAIN Beginner Clinic leading up to the TTF on July 23rd is geared toward you the complete newbie. I have lead this course now for the past 3 years and it is truly the most rewarding time of the year for me as a coach I get to see people blossom from panic and exhaustion, to confidence and exasperation! The 14-week clinic includes: Pool Swimming breaking down the basics of form first then building endurance Open Water familiarizing yourself with the nuances of the open water swim Brick Sessions making the run off the bike feel natural and smooth Big Training Day putting it all together practicing all 3 sports in a rural setting Hands on Demonstrations such as practicing transitions and changing a flat tire All this packaged with a training plan progressing you to where you ll need to be for the physical and mental demands of race day when you toe the line in July down at Ontario Place. It can be tough to go at it alone. The benefits of training in a group are numerous. Past participants have commented how it makes an otherwise individual sport more of a team event. You ll hear questions you may never have thought to ask on your own, you ll push yourself thanks to the motivation of others and you ll make new friends that will help give you a boost when you need it most. 4 the TTF Learn-to-Tri Clinic hosted by the toronto triathlon club The Toronto Triathlon Club is proud to present the TTF Learn-to-Tri Clinic. This event is geared towards participants looking to improve, or find, as the case may be, their triathlon skills in a safe and fun environment. Together, we will learn and practice skills related to the swim, the bike, the run as well as skills related to transition. This half day clinic is here to help you prepare for the 2017 TTF on July 23, Whether this will be your first triathlon or if you are simply looking to refine your triathlon skills, this is indeed the clinic for you! 5 TTF Ambassador Blog: "Why I Do Triathlon" By: Ryan My father was an avid marathon runner and triathlete. As a nine-year old boy, I idolized him. I have fond memories of my dad allowing me to cycle alongside him on his training runs. I d wait frustratingly on my BMX bike as he hid small water bottles out along his route, to be emptied on his way back. I realize now how remarkable his patience was for letting me ride next to him, and how much I must ve slowed him down. That didn t seem to matter though, because triathlon was at his core, and he relished being able to share any of that experience with his family. The disease ate away at my father extremely quickly. I witnessed a healthy, active man wither to nothing more than a skeletal eighty-pound figure in mere months. I recall that, during my last visit to his hospital room, there was a table bursting with flower arrangements. One of the bouquets had a card which read, See you in Kona! My dad s dream was to participate in the IRONMAN World Championship in Kona, Hawaii. This dream ended five days later when he finally succumbed to the cancer. That epithet had been written by a tight-knit group of friends that all trained together with my dad. When I took up running twenty-five years later, it was through joining a similar group in Toronto called Tribe Fitness. I was absolutely terrified when I went for my first run with that group. What if I m too slow? Will they wait for me? During two years of camaraderie, travel, love, and three marathons with that group, somewhere along the way I realized that it was possible for me to finish an IRONMAN triathlon. I understood that it would take unbounded training and dedication. I now had the confidence to pursue it; not only in memory of my father, but as a means of creating a deeper connection to him by sharing some of his struggles and joys in training and racing. Running was the first, and for me necessary, stepping stone to triathlon. Those initial fears that I had joining a running group proved to be wholly unjustified and misguided. Upon entering the sport of triathlon at the Toronto Triathlon Festival in 2016, I found myself faced with similar fears. There s no way I can swim over a kilometer! I m going to look ridiculous on my bike! I ve learned now that these are signals of challenges that, through hard work and sacrifice, I will conquer. It will be years before I m able to complete a full IRONMAN. The TTF, for me, represents another pivotal point on the long road to Kona and fulfillment of a now multi-generational dream.

6 TTF AMBASSADOR SPOTLIGHT The TTF caught up with advertising professional, spin instructor & expert yogi, Allison Miceli. What pushed you into triathlons? Growing up I was quite active in swimming and cycling, I had always been interested in the idea of triathlons but I didn t run. When I relocated to Toronto in May 2014 I joined a running group and by the end of the summer I was signed up for my first triathlon! What advice would you give to a first time triathlete racing TTF? My advice for a first time triathlete racing TTF would be to have fun! Your first triathlon will be an experience, there are a lot of firsts with your first race - group swim, setting up a transition zone, transitioning, find your groove as you switch from one event to the next, don t let it overwhelm you, take it all in and enjoy every moment. The TTF is a great race for a first time triathlete, the Toronto triathlon community is very supportive, lots of crews and locals come out to cheer! What s your favourite post-race meal? It s a toss-up between an epic brunch spread or a great burger, but that s a tough call... What are your goals for this year s TTF? My goal for this year s TTF is to race the Olympic Distance for the very first time. Much like last year I want to enjoy every moment of the race - from the views of the city while I m on my bike, to the lakeside run along the Martin Goodman Trail and of course the amazing triathlete community in Toronto who will be cheering one another on throughout the day! What or who inspires you? I am inspired by everyone who I run and sweat alongside, I am in awe of everyone and where they are in their journey as they chase their own goals. The people in my run family both locally in Tribe Fitness + Toronto and abroad never cease to amaze me in what they can accomplish when they make the commitment to themselves and put their mind to it. Being a part of a community of hardworking, passionate people who support one another both on and off the pavement inspires me to always continue to be a better version of me and motivates me to chase down my next finish line no matter how impossible it may seem. blog:

7 A HEALTHY RECIPE IDEA FROM "FURTHERMORE EQUINOX" Recipe: Fennel, Orange and Lemon Sicilian Fruit Salad Rather than using lemon juice as a dressing, the fruit takes center stage in this citrusy homage to southern Italy, thanks to the chefs at Hot Stove Society in Seattle. INGREDIENTS 2 fennel bulbs 3 oranges 2 lemons 2 cups olives (Kalamata, nicoise, picholine, gaieta) ½ cup Italian parsley leaves (also called flat leaf parsley) A few fronds from fennel bulbs Extra virgin olive oil Sea salt Red pepper flakes (optional) DIRECTIONS 1 Slice the tops off the fennel bulbs and cut them in half lengthwise. Remove the coarse outer shell of the fennel bulb, rinse, lay flat and cut into thin, lengthwise slices. 2 Cut the top and bottom off of the oranges and lemons, then slice the peel off the citrus, keeping them round in shape. 3 Remove any excess pith off fruit, cut quarter-inch slices horizontally and pick out seeds with a paring knife. 4 On a large flat serving platter, layer the fennel and arrange the citrus slices on top. Sprinkle with the olives, parsley and fennel fronds. Season with salt, freshly ground black pepper and a pinch of red pepper flakes, if using. 5 Drizzle with olive oil and allow salad to marinate before serving, 5 minutes. Read more at www.
