1 Great Footnotes Western Runners Magazine Jan 2008 No. 255 In this issue: Updates on the latest cross country meets, a runners profile and a recipe for marmalade and sultana cake ideal for fueling those winter runs. Hello and welcome to issue number 2555 of Footnotes! Firstly Happy New Year, may 2008 be healthy and prosperous for you all. This issue sees a variety of information and articles and I hope gives a flavour of what we are trying do with Footnotes. We have had some great contributions this month so please continue to send in your articles, information, ideas etc. Whilst we are happy to re-type your contributions where required, it would be great, and is of most use, if items can be submitted electronically via l as this speeds up the process of putting Footnotes together. We also particularly welcome pictures of you all. We know the pictures have been a big hit but they do take a while to gather together so if we had a library of mug-shots it would aid the process! 2 Letter from an Honorary Member Twenty one years ago I set out for my final long run (19 miles) in preparation for the London marathon. My chosen route was the cycle path from Mangotsfield to Bath and back. That was well before the introduction of the Ring Road, so the path was very narrow in places and unsurfaced. ( Much more attractive than it is now and liable to get worse if South Gloucestershire turns it into a bus route as they appear to be planning.) Fortunately I had an arrangement with my wife (Pam) who followed my progress by road in her little Mini, meeting me at convenient places to act as a sort of watering station. Well, everything went well at first but just beyond Bitton Station I was overtaken by a young cyclist. I don t know why but for some reason he kept stopping in front of me, waiting for me to catch up, then after a short interval chase after me again and overtake. Initially this was no problem as the path was quite wide. But close to Saltford the path narrowed considerably and he became a real nuisance. Eventually he must have tired of this game and decided to go back, but he made that decision immediately after passing me on a particularly narrow section of the path, stopping abruptly and swinging his bike around hitting me with it at the same time. After giving vent to my feelings and thinking that I had got away with that without injury I continued running. However, before I had covered another mile I suddenly became aware of the fact that I had not, after all, escaped injury. My back hurt so much that I was reduced to walking, the pain in my lumbar region getting steadily more intense. My next meeting point with Pam was not until the outskirts of Bath, which I eventually reached after walking that last section in shear agony. Pam was also concerned about my late arrival as I was well behind schedule. The journey home in the Mini was not very comfortable either. Needless to say I missed the London marathon but was allowed to run the following year. It took 6 months of physiotherapy and special exercises before I was able to resume light training. I ran my last race (Bath Half) shortly after my 60 th birthday and continued running occasionally for a few more years but eventually stopped after being attacked by a Jack Russell which rather viciously sank its fangs into my right calf muscle. Now I m almost 74 years old and because of that old back injury, just walking is very uncomfortable, sometimes very painful. However, I m still very much involved with athletics as a Level 4 Track & Field official and a Level 3 Endurance official, as well as being the Officials Secretary for Avon AA. Despite the number of incidents with dogs, one actually put me in the BRI for a while, I really have enjoyed the many years of running, particularly after I joined the Great Western Runners. I have many happy memories of running with those members who will remember me and I hope you will forgive me for not calling in on a club night to see you, or attending the AGM. However, keep running for as long as you can still enjoy doing so and I would like to wish you all a very happy New Year. Ray Gooding. 28 th December 2007 Runners Profile : Mike Hockett How long have you been running? I started as a young man in the marines and then returned to it in 2000 after a long spell just doing body building. A total of about 20 years. How long have you been a GWR member? I joined in April What made you take up running? The marines at first, then years later after seeing the Bristol Half Marathon advertised in 2000 in a free paper. It evoked some great memories; I did it, loved it and never looked back. What s your favourite race? The Bristol Half Marathon. Favourite race distance? Half Marathon. How many times a week do you run? Six times a week. What other training do you do? Weight training, Martial Arts and badminton. What s the one thing you wished you known when you started running? How to train properly in the military it was just hard sessions all the time, I now know the benefits of recovery, plus how much wives nag about all the extra washing. Do you have a race day routine? Yes I take race prep very seriously. I eat three hours before and then focus on the task ahead. How do you cope if you can t run? I ve been injured for a few months now and it has really affected my overall well being a great deal. Running makes me happy. Best running moment? Breaking sub 1.30 for a half marathon. Favourite pre race meal? Scrambled eggs on toast. Favourite kit brands? Addidas clothing and Mizuno shoes.

3 What s your goal for the next twelve months? To train very hard for Bristol Half Marathon 2008 and to start coaching at GWR. What s your favourite training run? Wednesday club night, the 8 mile route. Do you run with music? No but I must start, it works for Vito, Clive B and Martyn Church who only looks 21 years old. Worst running moment? Doing the Sodbury Slog Sunday morning after finishing work at in the morning. Best thing about the running world? Having a hard run on Wednesday night, then a sauna, shower and a drink with all the regular stay behind crew at BLT. Coaching at GWR Many of you may be aware that I have been coaching at Westbury Harriers on a Monday night for a period of time. I am a UK Athletics level 2 coach and I am looking at starting coaching at GWR. I would ask you to see either myself or Mike Wilcox if you would be interested in attending some coaching sessions; I am looking at starting sessions one day a week. These will be interval sessions at local venues and some track training at the Wise Campus. I am looking to start sessions in February at some local venues on a week night possibly Fridays kicking off at about 7pm. Finally I am available on Wednesday club nights for anything you think I may be able to help with including training advice or setting personal programmes. Mike Hockett UK Athletics Coach level 2 Endurance Canicross For anyone interested in running with dogs there is a local event in February visit for more details Marmalade and Sultana Loaf This is one of my favourite pre-training run snacks. The idea is to set a standard across all running age groups and all distances that should be achievable by the tenth best athlete for the class and distance. The targets have been determined by examining the 10 th best performance in each event of a five year period. The purpose is to set realistic standards and then use this measure as a means of driving up performance levels in each discipline. For more information on the overall scheme visit I thought it would be interesting to see which of our fellow club members have a Power of 10 ranking for In alphabetical order (surname) our Power of 10 athletes are: Jonathon Bamber is ranked 869 th for the half marathon in 2007 for his 76:43 in Stroud Steve Duddell is ranked 475 th for the marathon after a 2:50:28 in the London Marathon Carle Green is ranked 415 th for the marathon (up from 510 in the previous year) after a 2:49:08 in the Tokyo Marathon Lucy Hamilton is ranked 692 nd for the 10K road following her 39:52 in the Frenchay 10K and 426 th for the marathon after a 3:22:36 in the Edinburgh Marathon Andrew Harrison is ranked 710 th for the half marathon for his 75:53 in the Bristol Half and 124 th for the marathon following a 2:38:35 in London this year. Chris Newby is 1270 th for the 10K on road after a 34:35 in the Frampton 10K and 130 th for the marathon after a 2:38:46 in Berlin. Peter Royle is 786 th for the marathon after a 2:56:00 in Taunton Tanya Shaw is 232 nd for the marathon (up nearly 400 places from 615 the previous year) for her 3:14:33 in this year s London Marathon. Congratulations to all these athletes for their achievements in 2007! Maybe 2008 will see even more Great Westerners hitting similar heights. Look out in the next issue of Footnotes for the winner of our Christmas competition!

Bob Porter Resolving To Log - Nic Oughton I ve never been one for New Year s resolutions but this year is different, this year I am making a resolution that I am going to stick to. So what is it? Eat less? Drink less? Exercise more? Well yes probably all of those things should be on my list but my actual resolution is to return to logging my runs. Run logging seems to be one of those things that people either do religiously or not at all. I accept that I may be speaking to the converted here but it is something that I would (now) recommend to all runners. There are many reasons why logging your running is a good idea, in its most basic form it can provide you with a record of your mileage and maybe help identify what combination of training produces the best racing results. Add in additional information such as distance covered, weather conditions, how hard you pushed, even when and what you ate beforehand can help provide valuable data on getting the most out of when, where and how you train. For me my most valuable column of information is how I felt whilst running, and this is the reason for my New Year s resolution. When I took up running I also started logging my runs. At that point it was to help me measure my achievement. I started to run, at the age of thirty six to lose weight, I had never done any significant exercise since leaving school, I smoked fifteen a day for sixteen years and when I gave up the fags (on the 20 th Jan 2002 see not even that was a New Year s resolution!) I spent the next year eating sweets to compensate and gained stone upon stone until at the point I arrived at running I was around five and a half stone over my ideal weight. I started with a walk run program, how hard can this running lark be? The first minute of running felt like the longest minute of my life, by twenty seconds I was convinced that certain death could only be moments away. Fortunately the grim reaper was busy elsewhere and I managed to repeat the walk a minute run a minute ten times. My running log described each painful second but it also measured my achievement. Now I am not blessed with a runners body, mechanically I don t work particularly smoothly and the first couple of months read something like run a minute, walk a minute, visit the doctors as I dealt with shin splints and knee problems, but over time my body got used to be dragged around the Downs and soon my log became a record of my first half marathon training schedule and then a second half marathon and a 10K it was all there, religiously recorded and then I stopped. I don t remember why or how or when but at some point I stopped logging. Whenever that point was I had obviously decided there was no value in it any more. I knew how many weeks before a half marathon I needed to be up to ten miles, I knew how many times and what distances each week worked for me. What I didn t realize was that I had lost a record that helped me move forwards, gave me a benchmark against which I could measure myself. A record that I could use to look at what I had done, what results it had produced and then think about how that could be adjusted to make the results better. I guess I got lazy I knew how to do enough to keep off the weight I had lost but not how to improve at what had, by now, become a huge part of my life.

8 This year has proved out the value of that record and why I resolve that 2008 will once again become the year of the log. This year had started out ok I completed the Bath Half in 1:53:25 a PB you can t ask for anymore than that. As I mentioned before I am not a natural runner, I would like to have my half times under 1:50 and have always believed that I have a 1:45 in me. My new bench mark gave me hope that maybe this would be the year. However, 2007 was also the year that I spent six months heavily involved in a major work project. For four months of the six I averaged fifteen hour days seven days a week and spent a total of two months in California over three separate trips. When my running started to go off the boil it was no real surprise. I wasn t always getting to run, I had discovered Togo s and Erik s Deli. One too many Tuesday specials and Marrakesh Expresses (pastrami and sprouts in a warm pitta pocket with Erik s secret goo yum!) were beginning to tell on the waistline, and the long hours and travelling were taking their toll. I was still training and racing I even did the Santa Cruz Half (we saw a whale in the bay during the race now you don t get that in Bristol or Stroud!) but something wasn t right. However, without recording the training I was doing there was no way of saying absolutely where the problem lay. Was it simply not enough running or not enough running over the right distance, or not at the right times. I also had no real record of how I felt or how I was actually doing, how did my current training time over 10k compare to a 10k training run from the previous year? I had no idea. Then the project finished, I caught up on my sleep, even took a vacation but my running still wasn t right. I had no energy, my legs felt empty, my breathing was odd, I was getting slower and slower and therefore not burning as many calories so I carried on gaining weight which put more strain on my knees and legs which meant they hurt more etc. vicious circle. Until after months of this downward spiral I finally realized that after every run I was getting wheezy. Not gasping for breath or anything dramatic like that but wheezy, somewhere in the background. It would last for about twelve hours and then go away. It had kind of registered a couple of times, but then it went away, I forgot about it and just complained about something different after my next training run. Then I had one really, really bad run and had a rasping wheeziness afterwards and was ready to hand over my trainers to anyone that wanted them so I took myself off to the doctors. I have asthma, not particularly badly, my Olympic dream maybe over (!), but the asthma is easily controlled and ventolin has had an almost instant impact. Having now really thought about it I have realized that this has been happening for many months, something I would have detected had I been logging. My legs have always been my weak point but I now realize that sometime over the last twelve months being able to breathe at full capacity took over as my number one issue. If I had still been logging my running I would have noticed, would have done something about it and may have already made that 1:50, and so, in 2008, I resolve to log.
