UPDATES ON FARC MEMBERS! ASHLEY HIGGINSON Ashley Higginson, a 2007 FARC Scholarship Winner (Colts Neck H.S., 07), is a 2011 graduate of Princeton University. She had many college racing achievements to complement her Colts Neck High School running career. The following are some of her great college achievements: Three (3) time Division I First Team All-American Member of the 2008 US Jr. World Team in the 5000m 2008 PennRelay's College 5000m womans Champion Twice Eastern College Athletic Conference Champ. Eight (8) time individual Ivy League Champion Eleven (11) time 1st Team All-Ivy League Set the Princeton University, Ivy League and ECAC records in the 3000 meter Steeplechase Princeton University Women's Track & Field Most Outstanding Performer Award Princeton's C.O.Kienbush Sportswoman of Year 2010 & 2011 Princeton's Nancy Kraemer Women's Outstanding Athletic and Leadership Award Named senior captain of Princeton's Cross Country and Indoor/Outdoor Track and Field Teams. Ashley will continue her running career for a year before attending Univ. of Colorado Law School. ROBBY ANDREWS As a University of Virginia sophomore track standout (Manalapan H.S., 09) Robby Andrews came up big at the NCAA East Regional May 26-28, 2011 at Indiana University, Bloomington, Indiana, after recovering completely from a foot injury. Robby won both of his races at the East Regionals, advancing to the next step, the NCAA championships in DesMoines, Iowa. As a freshmen at NCAAs, Robby had shockingly accomplished (a many thousands of times You-Tubed) upset of Oregon senior and Olympian Andrew Wheating with his stunningly well-timed kick and lunge at the tape. Could history repeat? The June 10, 2011 race began with the whole field passing Robby in the first 400 meters, undoubtedly, this best in the nation collegiate field of half-milers was wary of the young phenom Robby Andrews reputation as a fast closer, the blazing first 400 meters (a mere 7 or a stride short of one quarter mile) of the NCAA final was run in under 50 seconds, much quicker than Robby expected. As usual, he was last in the eight-runner field. Well, besides being so talented, disciplined, and well trained, Robby has a combined optimism, toughness and smarts, and he convinced himself, as he somehow does, to have faith, adjust his plan as needed to get back in the race, and persist. Robby explained to reporters that because the pace at the front was so fast, he anticipated the field coming back to him, but it did not work out that way. Five hundred meters into the race he was not gaining any ground. With 300 meters to go I thought I was out of it he said. From 300 to 150 meters was the toughest part. It was really hard mentally. On the final turn and with 150 meters remaining, Andrews moved up to seventh place and off the final turn he was closing fast. I thought, We re racing today and I m not here to lose, Andrews said of his late-race surge. On the final stretch I gave it everything that I had, I was really lucky I had enough room. Andrews began reeling in the leaders one by one with each swift stride until only Charles Jock from the University of California-Irvine was ahead of him. Andrews passed Jock in the final strides, stopping the clock in 1:44.71, the second fastest time in meet history (Florida s Mark Everet won the NCAA title in 1:44.70 in 1990). Jock tuned in the fastest second-place time in meet history (1:44.74). Andrews got everything he wanted at Des Moines, winning a second NCAA title and easing any notion that he was a one-hit wonder as a freshman. His victory against the nation s best collegians gave him the confidence he needed to then compete at a U.S. level and test himself against the nation s best 800-meter runners. Having bested all of his collegiate competition yet again, Robby then took aim at the best American 800 meter competitors at the USATF nationals in late June in Oregon, facing the likes of mulitiple national champion and 2008 Olympian Nick Symmonds and other top American professionals in a meet that was to decide the U.S. national team that would compete at the World Track and Field Championships in Daegu, South Korea from August 27 through September 4, with the top three (3) 800 meter finishers in each event at the national meet earning a spot on the American team. Although his times indicate he is already there with them, he faced guys in their upper twenties with a lot of international experience, and he and his collegiate coach saw this mostly as a learning experience and an opportunity that he will have again. Slightly less than optimum factors, such as a long trip with layovers, made it difficult, and Robby was slightly off his best at that meet, not winning or finishing in the top three but leaving himself challenges ahead to motivate himself going forward. We look forward eagerly to following much more of the promising career of this outstanding local middledistance athlete. [Robby comes from a family of outstanding athletes, evident through several generations, and his dad, sister, and he are among leaders of a running camp each July at Manalapan. They also brought the campers out to train and participate at the FARC summer series Wednesday evening races in recent years at Monmouth Battlefield State Park. editor s note] KEN WALSH 2007 Scholarship Recipient Susan Walsh was one of the 2011 FARC Matthew Stuper Scholarship winners this spring. As she is the second member of her family to win this coveted award, FARC would like to provide an update on Susan s brother Ken Walsh, now a college graduate: Ken, a 2007 recipient (FARC 2007 file photo below taken from before Ken s Pt. Pleasant Boro HS graduation) of the Freehold Running Club Matthew Stuper Scholarship, graduated from Ramapo College in May with a B.S. in Information Systems, summa cum laude with a 3.95 GPA. He participated in twelve seasons of cross country (XC), indoor and outdoor track, and served as Team Captain, Men's XC, and indoor and outdoor track and field. He enjoyed the running experience greatly at Ramapo and made good friends though the sport. He received a number of awards as a student athlete including the Ramapo College Scholar Athlete award (highest GPA for athletics), two time First Team All Academic NJ Athletic Conference for , Jerome Lee Memorial Award for Leadership, Michael J. Ricciardi Outstanding Athletic Service Award, and Outstanding Student for Information Systems Major. [Several years ago, Ken as an Eagle Scout raised $ thousands for charity and built a nature trail! Susan has decided to attend Ramapo, also, following in the footsteps of her brother as scholar-athlete editor s note] 2

Jersey Shore Half Marathon -Oct 2-Results Written by Jim Robbins (Atlantic Highlands Herald, ) SANDY HOOK, NJ - Seven hundred and three (703) road racers competed in the 39th running of the Jersey Shore Half Marathon presented by the Shore Athletic Club (SAC) with the cooperation of FARC and JSRC on a sunny, breezy Sunday AM of Oct. 2, at the federal park of Gateway Nat. Recreation Area-Sandy Hook. 1:26:57 (17 th overall). Yes, I was the leading woman the whole way, informed Booth when asked and thought the course was mainly flat, maybe a few hills, but then decided to change the word hills to inclines. She added: The temperature was great but there was a little breeze. Racewalk finishers: Ron Salvio 2:18:10, Whiting; Maria Paul 2:24:28, Long Branch; Patrick Bivona 2:30:35, Clifton; Eliot Collins 2:48:40, Raritan; Mary McDermott 2:55:06, Lawrenceville; Elliott Denman 3:01:04, West Long Branch. Wheelchair finishers: Chelsea Crytzer, 20, 1:07:53, Parsippany; Bridgette Wise, 15, 1:23:20, Pipersville, PA. Thomas Zarra, 54, of Bay Head is a member of the JSRC and SAC and can be seen competing in many of the Shore area races throughout the year and always is a top contender. Today was no different. He finished in 18 th place out of the total 703 at 1:27:08 an impressive 6:40 per mile pace. He recalls doing his best time for this distance to be 1:20:30 here at this course about 15 years ago. Jay McGovern crosses the finish. Photos by Bob Both, jsrc.org The first competitor to break the tape at the finish line, held by Linda Hyer, FARC officer, and race-director Isabel Meldrum, that is located on the main road outside Parking Lot E, which was also the starting area, was Jay McGovern, 32, of Atlantic Highlands at 1:15:14 (one hour, 15 minutes and 14 seconds). Jay s twin brother, David, also of Atlantic Highlands was third place finisher at 1:19:42 and today s runner up was Jason Gres, 37, of Monmouth Beach at 1:16:35. No, from the start I was out in front, said today s champion when asked if he had to catch any runner to be the leader. I was happy with it, he said of his performance and explained: I m in the middle of training for the New York City Marathon and this was a good gauge/indicator for what I m going to do. His thoughts on the course: It s great because it s flat and fast with picturesque scenery - the volunteers were also great and it was a good time and of the weather he said, It was perfect running weather, about 55 degrees, cool, no humidity and very little wind. Dactilia Booth crosses the finish First in for the women, from this double-loop course, which goes to a turnaround at the lighthouse area at the north end of Sandy Hook to complete the 13.1 mile distance, was Dactilia Booth, 35, of Long Branch at 1:22:55 (9 th place overall). Second and third place for the women went to Beth Reed, 27, of New York City at 1:24:14 (10 th overall) and Alyssa Douma, 24, of West Milford at Middletown s John Gore finished at 1:36:51, a respectable 7:24 per mile pace and was greeted at the finish chute area by his wife Catherine and his children Marcus, 9, and Julia, soon to be 11, with a big sign that said: GREAT JOB DAD. This race course is awesome! exclaimed Dawn Ciccone of Highlands who considers this course, my own backyard and I train here a lot. She likes the double loop because, (I) got to see all the racers and many of them are my friends and we shared high fives. She was satisfied but not elated with her time of 1:43:11. Amber Hart of Wall had a racing time of 1:30:34 and good for 29 th place overall. Hart was in first place for the women three years ago at a 5K at the Long Branch boardwalk during a northeast storm and when asked her thoughts on the weather for that race she said, Windy, windy, windy! Two years later at the Johnny Cobb Belmar Five Mile Race, held in July, she finished in the top ten females and temperatures were high that day and described it as Hot, hot, hot! Today she offered her thoughts on the weather in a similar, alliterative way: Beautiful, beautiful, beautiful! A special feature of this race is that water-drinking stations are strategically placed on the scenic course and serviced by different groups. A prize is offered to the group that expresses the most enthusiasm to the runners and this is decided by the racers votes. Donna Cetrulo, feature organizer, filed this report: The Civil Air Patrol has been volunteering their services at the JSHM for several years. The group is the official civilian auxiliary of the United States Air Force. Members of the Civil Air Patrol, and their leaders come dressed in their uniforms ready for hard work. In addition to many other duties, these high school students man a water stop. They, along with Marlboro High School 3

made up the high school division that run water stops. Monmouth University, the perennial favorite, and Georgian Court University, were the two collegiate level teams. Each brought a good number of enthusiastic volunteers. After the runners and walkers finished the race, they were asked to choose their favorite water stop. There was great debate about the merits of each team, but many people agreed that they all did a terrific job. In all elections however, there are winners. This year Monmouth University won at the collegiate level, and Marlboro High School at the high school level. Once again our thanks to the young people and their coaches and advisers for providing the runners with water, and encouragement, and merriment. At the starting line, Phil Hinck, past president of the JSRC (twice) and director of many local races, two of which are nationally recognized, informed the racers of the water stops and encouraged the participants to make use of them. Hinck then introduced road-racing champion of many Shore area e- vents David DeMonico of Ocean who gave a fine rendition of our Star-Spangled Banner on his trumpet. Hinck then got the Half Marathoners ready and voiced a loud Ready, Set, GO and the racers were off at 9 a.m. following the lead vehicle driven by the race director. The Sandy Hook Lighthouse 5K is part of this annual event and that race of 3.1 miles went off a few minutes after the main event and was led by bicyclist Rich Edwards, vice-president of FARC. Its course was part of the main course, including the same finishing-line chute, along with the vast parking lot itself. Ivo Casas, 24, of Elizabeth was the winner of the 133 total competitors at 17:24 (31 seconds faster than his winning time of this event last year). Lisa Namath, 36, of Wall was the women s winner at 19:15 (4 th overall). Post registration is a problem for this event since the Department of Interior prohibits any money exchange on its federal property so registration has to be off site. Tim McLoone was generous enough to offer the parking lot of his Sea Bright restaurant for post-registration purposes. The committee members set up for this were retiree from the Long Branch school system Donna Cetrulo, Ocean; Carolyn Heuser, Freehold; Janet Bergum, Howell; Patty Hitman, Ocean; Marilyn Ryder, Long Branch and Paulette Matis, a colleague of the director at Rutgers University. Paul Roman, Emergency Medical Coordinator for the race and Assistant Howard Suffill, said that, There were a few serious cases and we did have the normal amount of expected cuts and bruises. They further informed that several organizations were on hand in case of need: the first aid squads of Highlands, Atlantic Highlands, Rumson and Middletown Township, which also included its bike team; the representatives of the Civil Air Patrol Bayshore Composite Squadron; the Communication Unit of the Monmouth County Sheriff s Department; Paramedics from MONOC; Physicians from Jersey Shore Sports Medicine; chiropractors from the NJ Chiropractic Society; staffing and logistics from the Jersey Coast Chapter of American Red Cross. Race director Isabel Meldrum, former president of both FARC and SAC and active racewalker, presented awards to the aforementioned winners and age-group leaders at the Parking Lot E's concession section. Overall winners received replicas of sand castles. Age-group leaders received seaside picture frames and replicas of lighthouses. 5K awards were sailboat replicas. Random prizes were available for the Lighthouse 5K participants. And the Half Marathoners had a sea scape painting by renowned Shore artist Avram Shapiro. A great picnic was provided at this oceanside location: hot soup, hot dogs, bagels, fruit and soft drinks. This race has been voted the best food race at the Jersey Shore. "I'm very excited about the excellent turnout, 703 half-marathoners and 133 in the Lighthouse 5K, and want to thank all the racers for their support. I want to acknowledge also the know-how coop- eration we get from the volunteers (250 total) of the area clubs (SAC, FARC, JSRC). Compliments, too, to the chairpeople of the organizing committee who did an outstanding job of food preparation and distribution for the athletes. I want to thank Donna Cetrulo, Linda Hyer, Mike O Flaherty, Tom Wendel, Marcia and Avram Shapiro, Phil and Penny Hinck, Manny and Roberta Eisner, Fred and Anna Torres of Elite Racing Systems for all their help. I also want to recognize our sponsors: Charlie Rooney and McCloone s Riverside Restaurant. A special thank you to the National Park Service Rangers who coordinate the traffic on the roads, also the Civil Air Patrol Cadets. The Half is a very special Jersey Shore event as it has its roots right here at Sandy Hook and this year marks 39 years of running at the Shore. It keeps on growing and my philosophy is that when you put on a quality event the runners will come out and support it. The Jersey Shore Half Marathon is a runners race put on for runners and by runners. I want to pay gratitude to you one and all. We hope to see you on September 30, Our website is said director Meldrum in an overview. Meldrum has been involved in this event for 18 years, 15 as director. Other finishers of the 13.1 mile challenge: Atlantic Highlands Herald area leaders: Jessica Cini 1:30:08, Fair Haven; Sara Amitrani 1:30:48, Red Bank; Geoffrey Nicholas 1:31:18, Leonardo; Thomas Schaefer 1:31:35, Keansburg; Rich Bayer 1:31:37, Fair Haven; Kristine Claussen 1:32:25, Atl. CROSS-COUNTRY S (XC) BACK! The 2011 cross country series opened on Sat. Oct. 1 st at Lincroft s Thompson Park. The race was run under gray skies. The temperature was 60 degrees Fahrenheit and the relative humidity 85%. The course was spongy due to heavy rains during the night before. A couple of spots were like running through a swamp. Only the gators were missing. With gators, all may have run even a bit faster! At many cross-country meets in the past we lacked enough men or women to field a scoring team, but that was not the case today. We were well represented and had a great showing. The team scoring and individual performances will be posted on the club website ( when they become available. The next race will be Sat., Oct. 8 th, 9AM at Tatum Park, Holland Road entrance, in Middletown. Everyone hopes to see you there! By the way the race fee was lowered to $5.00 per race. 4

LETTERS TO THE EDITOR May be sent to farcnj.com or to the LONG RUN Editor at MUD AND OBSTACLES, By Rich Edwards,VP This summer I decided to participate in Mud and Obstacle Runs. These runs are just that: mud and obstacles. Participants take part on ~5K courses that involve going over things (examples: hurdles, wall, cargo nets), under things (examples: barbed wire, fences, pipes), through water and of course mud! They all had wave starts so groups of up to 500 went out at minute intervals. Many participants dress up for these events in costumes and other creative apparel. There was the Warrior Dash in June (Albrightsville, PA), the Rugged Maniac in July (Englishtown, NJ), another Warrior Dash in August (Windham, NY) and the Joint Base Mud Run in September (Fort Dix, NJ). The Warrior Dash races have over 15K participants and rewards participants with a free drink (aka - beer or soda) for turning in the timing chip. Each race was unique. Albrightsville had plenty of rocks and logs along the route and basically flat. The mud at the end stuck to EVERYTHING! Englishtown had some really good hurdles and a cool slide, the course was on a motocross track and woods. Windham was straight up a ski slope for over a mile and over course across and down the ski slopes as well. Fort Dix was the only event that was a 10K and had some permanent obstacles used by the military. The camaraderie was great, no clocks as the goal was to finish and the timing chips would give results afterward. It was a great alternative to road racing and I have to say that I enjoyed participating with friends and fellow runners. I bought a kilt for running in these events. Windham was my favorite due to the challenges and running in the event twice (both Sat. & Sun.). DO NOT LET ANXIETY AND STRESS AFFECT YOUR RUNNING: By: Stan Popovich Sometimes, fear and anxiety can get the best of us in running. The key is to know how to manage that fear and anxiety. As a result, here is a brief list of techniques that a runner can use to help manage their fears and every day anxieties. Occasionally, you may become stressed when you have to run in an important event. When this happens, visualize yourself doing the task in your mind. For instance, you have to run in front of a large group of people in the next few days. Before the big day comes, imagine yourself doing the event in your mind. By doing this, you will be better prepared to perform for real when the time comes. Self-Visualization is a great way to reduce the fear and stress of a coming situation. Sometimes we get stressed out when everything happens all at once. When this happens, a person should take a deep breath and try to find something to do for a few minutes to get their mind off of the problem. A person could read the newspaper, listen to some music or do an activity that will give them a fresh perspective on things. This is a great technique to use right before your next event. Another technique that is very helpful is to have a small notebook of positive statements that you can carry around with you. Whenever you come across an affirmation that makes you feel good, write it down in a small notebook that you can carry around with you. Whenever you feel stressed, open up your small notebook and read those statements. This will help to manage your negative thinking before your running event. In every anxiety-related situation you experience, begin to learn what works, what doesn t work, and what you need to improve on in managing your fears and anxieties. For instance, you have a lot of anxiety and you decide to take a small walk before your running event to help you feel better. The next time you feel anxious you can remind yourself that you got through it the last time by taking a walk. This will give you the confidence to manage your anxiety the next time around. Take advantage of the help that is available around you. If possible, talk to a professional who can help you manage your fears and anxieties. They will be able to provide you with additional advice and insights on how to deal with your current problem. By talking to a professional, a person will be helping themselves in the long run because they will become better able to deal with their problems in the future. Remember that it never hurts to ask for help. Do Not Stress Over Your Competition By: Stan Popovich Many runners sometimes get anxious when they go against a tough opponent. They get nervous about who they are competing with and they get so worked up that they lose focus on their own running. In the end, they make mistakes and end up beating themselves up if they do not win. As a result, here is a list of techniques that a runner can use to help manage the stress of going against the competition. The first step is to learn as much as you can about your opponent. Although this may seem obvious, some runners may think they already know what they need to know. Remember there is always something to learn about your competition. Read the reports about your opponent and watch him or her performance. Try to figure out an angle on how you can beat your competition. The more you know about your competition the better your chances are you will win. This will also help to reduce your worries in the future. Do not assume anything about your competition whether they are stronger or weaker than you. Every athlete has his good and bad times and just because you may be facing a stronger opponent does not mean that you will lose. Remember that you and your opponent both have 5

an equal chance of winning. You are both starting from scratch. This should help you to give you confidence going into your next event. Focus on how you can best strive for perfection in your own running instead of worrying about your opponent. For instance, you are going against the number one athlete in the tournament and you are nervous. Instead of focusing on how good your competition is, focus on your performance. Concentrate on how you can perform your event and how you can best improve on your problem areas. Realize that you can't win all of the time and that also includes your competition. You may be the best athlete in the world; however, you will still sometimes lose. No one can win all of the time. When facing a tough competitor, use this fact to your advantage. Even the best athletes will make some mistakes. It is not uncommon to get nervous when you go against a better opponent. All you can do is to focus on your skill sets and do the best you can. This will help you in the long run. BIOGRAPHY Stan Popovich is the author of "A Layman's Guide to Managing Fear Using Psychology, Christianity and Non Resistant Methods" - an easy to read book that presents a general overview of techniques that are effective in managing persistent fears and anxieties. 7 ANNUAL SUMMER SERIES Annual FARC Kids Summer Nights Race Series 25 meter toddler race, 50 meter and 100 meter Battlefield Charge Results Thanks to all the many families who came out with kids to run and have fun! Freehold Area Running Club 29 th Annual Summer Series Battlefield State Park Manalapan, New Jersey June 22, - July 27, 2011 This was our 29 th year of our summer series; it was back in 1982 that a few runners from Freehold decided to run at the park. The following January 1983 they formed the Freehold Area Running Club. We have a six week program for children 2 years to 12 years which is our Kids Summer Nights this was the 16th year of the program at the park. The races are 25 yards dash, 50 yards dash and the famous 100 yard charge up the hill, which all the kids just love running. For the older children 8 and up we have the half mile and mile runs, through the pathways of the park. This year we had over 300 children running the half mile and mile. Our Kids Summer Nights had 250 children running the dashes. 29 th Annual FARC Summer Series ½ mi., 1 mi.&5k Results Thanks to all who came out with families to run and volunteer! Popular 6-Week Series was Directed by Isabel Meldrum. Our Adult 5K run, which is a road and cross country event through the park, had 560 runners for the 5 weeks. We had to cancel the first week due to thunderstorms. This running event has become a major event for the runners of Freehold. We are looking forward to 2012 which will be our 30 th Anniversary in the Park. Our total participants and spectators for the 5 weeks was well over 1200 attending. Weather didn t cooperate the first week when the June 22nd races were rained out. Please visit our website FARCNJ.com for more photos. 6/29/11 - Week 2 - Results Start of the Mile Run: Start of the 5K Adult Run Kids Pre-Race Warm-up Exercises: Loyal Volunteers keep Registration running smooth 7
