3 Keynote Speaker Sarah Renz Sarah Renz is serving as Chairman of the 2019 Chicago Yacht Club Race to Mackinac presented by Wintrust. This is Sarah s second year leading the effort to put on the Mac Race, one of the most prestigious sailboat races in the world. As chair, she leads a team of over 100 volunteers and yacht club staff in organizing the race and the myriad of onshore and community outreach events put on each year in relation to the Mac. In addition to chairing the Mac, Sarah serves on the Chicago Yacht Club Board of Directors and has chaired or served on numerous other committees at the club. Sarah started sailing sunfish on Lake Michigan with her family. She brought her passion with her to the College of Charleston where she was nominated to the Women s All American ICYRA Team. She expanded her interests to the regatta management side of the sport. She has been extensively involved with the Bermuda Gold Cup and the World Match Race Tour. She helped run the America s Cup World Series Chicago event in An active offshore and inshore racer, she campaigns her J/70 one design Goodwill with her husband, Mark (also an active racing sailor). She races on numerous boats, big and small, around the country. Sarah's and Mark s children are following them into the sport. On many weekends they can be found supporting Opti regattas around the Midwest. One of Sarah s proudest accomplishments arose out of the ACWS Chicago event. She helped ensure that the assets from that event were left behind to launch Endeavour Chicago, a STEM + Sailing educational partnership that engages 1,500 city of Chicago 5th-8th graders per year. Sarah is the managing director for Endeavour Chicago. In that role she works in partnership with the Chicago Park District and the Chicago Parks Foundation to bring new boaters to Lake Michigan for a free, hands-on experience with certified instructors and scientists each summer. Sarah hopes to share her passion for sailing and sail racing with many kids who otherwise would not have the opportunity to be exposed to our great sport. Sarah is thrilled to meet new faces at the Midwest Women s Sailing Conference and join them in passionate discussions around safety education, management, teamwork, strategy, and the growth of the sport. 4 **SAILING ABILITY QUALIFICATION GUIDE** Please use the following information as a guide when choosing workshops: Beginner: You haven t been on a sailboat before or you ve been a guest on other people s boats. Your experience is limited to following directions. Your knowledge of terminology is basic. Little or no helm time. You ve been sailing with others, but do not adjust anything without direction. Intermediate: You ve been sailing with others. You know fundamental terms and equipment and can prepare for and execute maneuvers with brief commands. You are familiar with basic trim of jib and main, and know when and how to adjust the sails. Helm time is limited, but can read telltales. Know that there are rules of the road, but don't know them. Have been exposed to navigation but have limited practice. Advanced: You can hand, reef, and steer and know what each means. Understand navigation terms, and recognize all aids to navigation, but may have limited charting practice. You can direct a beginner in sail trim. Can use secondary trim controls. Have flown a spinnaker. Can maneuver in close quarters under sail or power. Morning Workshops Cruising the BVI: Chartering Basics Mary Richter You ll wish you were already there as Mary covers choosing a reputable charter company, provisioning, routes, and destinations for great sailing, snorkeling, and the perfect Caribbean vacation. Plus you ll take home a great outline and resource guide. Mary has organized numerous sailing charters in both the US and British Virgin Islands and has updated her presentation with personal experience during the area s ongoing recovery from the horrific hurricanes. Surprise! You're in Charge Sarah Pederson (Double-Session) Learn what to do if you find yourself unexpectedly taking over the responsibilities of getting the boat safety back to the dock. This class is for all skill levels but is focused on those who have not regularly had the opportunity to take charge of a boat in a variety of conditions. We will cover how to prepare yourself, safety equipment and information, sailing techniques, docking, anchoring, radio use, and more. Participants will have the opportunity to apply this new knowledge into real life scenarios. What's the Program? Sarah Renz A skipper wears many hats. As Captain, you decide what kind of racing program you want to build and you develop the crew. Wearing your administrative hat, you file the proper paperwork at the proper times. Equipment manager juggles checklist after checklist. And don t forget your get-acrossthe-start-line hat! Draw on Sarah Renz s skills on and off the race course to learn how to manage your race program. From large boats to small, distance races to closed course, and fleet to one-on-one match racing, her insights will make your race smoother. Protest: Why You Should Nancy Glover Most of us who race casually have never filed an official protest. And that may be a mistake! A national-level race judge, Nancy will walk you through the process from raising the flag to filing the form and presenting your case. She will also include a discussion of why it s important to make a formal protest, even in a social series, for the education and safety of everyone on the water. Taking Care of Your Medical Kit Shelly Galligan So That It Will Take Care of You We spend thousands of dollars on the latest safety equipment, and yet many boaters often forget about their potentially life-saving medical kits. In this class, we ll discuss what could go into your kit, how to decide, how to package your kit(s), and when to replace those items. Plus we ll take a hands-on look at how to use the things that seem daunting. When you re done, your medical kit will be your new best friend. Know When to Fold 'Em: Preserve and Mickey Nielson Protect Your Sails (Double-Session) Sails are an investment and should be treated accordingly. Learn the difference between a luff fold, leach fold, loft fold, fold for a racing hoist, and folding for winter storage. We ll also look at spinnakers and the many ways they can be packed: turtles, snuffers TM, socks, and snakes. The discussion will touch on repair materials you should keep on board. This is a hands-on class. Be prepared to be on your hands and knees as the Windover Room becomes your foredeck! Splicing: Easy as One-, Two-, Shelly Galligan Three-Strand All dock lines and anchor lines should have an eye splice in one end. Sure, you can buy them pre-spliced. But we re better than that. Our splices will be just as strong as those done by a professional rigger, and splicing an eye into three-strand rope is really very easy. In this hands-on class, we ll learn and practice both the eye splice and the back splice which is used to finish off the end of a line to keep it from fraying. Introduction to Sailing Teresa Coronado For beginners and those who wish to learn the fundamentals of sailing. Receive an introduction to sailing, boat equipment, points of sail, tacking, jibing, and basic safety. Even if you already know some of these basics, you ll enhance your knowledge with this opportunity to get your questions answered. Weather Using the Web Amy Seeley Learn how to find important information on the National Weather Service website using the many different services available, all offered for the Great Lakes area. We will go over the Great Lakes Marine Portal, websites, NOAA Weather Radio, and criteria for various marine products. Race Tactics Nancy Glover Once you ve made it through the (often) chaotic start, now it s time to sail your race. Explore strategies that the best racing sailors use to achieve an advantage over their competitors. Review the tactics that should be considered in choosing your approach, depending on the course configuration, wind, point of sail, and your knowledge of your competitors. Afternoon Workshops Recognizing Chart Symbols Jane Larson What do those lights mean? Why is that signal red or green? Why is that thing making that noise? And where is the map?! Learn to identify the aids to navigation that you see on the water: including lights, shapes, colors, sounds, and how to use them as you navigate. We ll also explore handson chart reading and how to apply your new knowledge while sailing to reach your destination safely. Safety Equipment Amy Cermak Learn about the safety equipment on your boat and more importantly learn how to use it. In this interactive, handson workshop we ll cover life jackets, marine radios, flares, crew overboard equipment, and more. A must-do course whether you re new or it s just time for a refresher. Basic Sail Trim Teresa Coronado Explore basic techniques for trimming sails in a variety of weather and wind conditions. Using a docked boat, we ll take a hands-on approach that will help you to gain knowledge and confidence in your trimming skills. The session will also include proper sail handling techniques and strategies for getting the most out of any sail plan, focusing on what influences sail shape and why it matters. Advanced Sail Trim Cate Muller Proper trim matters whether you re racing or cruising. Explore advanced trim tools for optimizing mainsail and headsail trim in varying wind and wave conditions. Using a docked boat, we ll explore how to keep a boat moving in light or heavy air or critical conditions; how communication between trimmer and helmsman can be considered trimming; and when to apply the rules of thumb. Learn how halyard tension, boom vang, and lead adjustment are your extra tools. Dockside/On-Boat Class, Life Jacket Required. Anchoring: Why, Which, Tiffany Krihwan and How? Senior Captain on Milwaukee s flagship Denis Sullivan, Tiffany is accustomed to keeping ships in place. Adapting those skills to all size boats, she will cover the basics of anchoring that any sailor needs. Demonstration materials will include different types of hawsers (if you don t know what a hawser is, you need this class!). When you re done, you ll understand the many anchors used for a variety of sea bottom materials and terrain. Knots 201 Cindy Kraus You can practically tie a bowline one-handed with your eyes closed, but you ve always wanted to learn a few of the fancier knots. This is your opportunity! Cindy s nimble hands will challenge and teach you to tie a tugboat hitch, an Alpine butterfly knot, and even a fast Monkey s Fist to help heave a line. Get ready for the really interesting. Good Crew, Key Crew Chris Garbacz If you spend any time on OPB (Other People s Boats), or want to, you ve likely contemplated how you can best fit in. What makes a key crew member? What are the unique challenges that you face as you endeavor to find your place in a crew and keep it? Chris will explore how you can improve your crew experience for yourself and for your skipper, discuss the choreography on board, and how the best teams work seamlessly together from bow to stern! Included in the class will be hands-on experience with winching as a team sport! Questions & Answers Dana Robb (Facilitator) Have you ever attended a class or lecture and left with unanswered questions? Perhaps the group was too big or the presenter didn t leave time for questions. Perhaps you weren t sure that what you wanted to know fit within the class framework; or maybe you were just uncomfortable asking in front of the whole group. Our keynote speaker and many of our conference presenters will be available during this session to talk more casually about the issues and interests of our attendees. Questions can be asked in person, or submitted in writing to be read anonymously.
