2 Commodore s Comments, November 2017 As expected the Newsletter Editor s first grandchild arrived to great excitement and she has departed to support son and daughter-in-law in the Netherlands. This means that our Rear Commodore Cruising has temporarily assumed the mantle of Editor just at the height of RCC planning duties for 2018 and at the same time he has become the new Granddad. They do say if need a job doing, give it to a busy man! *see note on previous page! The clocks have gone back, it has turned colder this weekend but hopefully you have made a start on those winter jobs and if your boat is being lifted, you are snugged down ashore. Putting the clocks back coincided with Charles Harrison sending me an article about a young man (some years ago) enjoying several trips on the Malcolm Miller sail training schooner. I must have mentioned to Charles that I had had the opportunity to benefit from 2 weeks on the sister ship, Sir Winston Churchill, in Talk about putting the clocks back I was then 19 and remember a lovely sailing day crossing the North Sea from Denmark and being off watch, listening to an early transistor radio relaying the Kenneth Wolstenholme commentary as England beat West Germany (note the West) in that World Cup. If you too can remember watching or listening to that event I wonder if you can remember where you were. Maybe I will give a short slide show of my Sir WC experiences at a winter meeting. I am not being irreverent; all the stores were delivered to Sir WC, Langelinie Quay, Kopenhagen. Many may find the photo of Sir WC under full sail of interest. Can you name the square rigged triangular sail at the top of the foremast? (Old Gaffer Members of the ECA have to state the number of stitches to the inch in this sail as well- to maintain a level playing field for AWB members-the ANUT Ed!). Don t forget our Cheese and Wine event on the 18 th November and our Christmas Lunch on the 16 th December. 3 Planning some upgrades to your boat this winter- here s a warning from the depths of Koto s lockers! Remember, it has to get there! A cautionary tale. I am intending to add a holding tank to Koto over the winter. There is a cupboard behind the loo and a pull out sink just under it which we never use (Oh! And Hmmmm!-A NUT Ed)which looked like a place to put it. So out came the sink and the front of the cupboard so I could measure up to fit the biggest tank that would fit in the space, whilst not being excessive. I spent a long time measuring everything, several times, in fact to make sure I got it all correct. I then spent even longer with ruler and pencil and then Visio drawing up my unusual shaped tank (a cross between a wedge and a parallelogram). Next I dutifully made a mock-up out of hardboard. Hmm! It seemed quite large when made in real life but it would fit the space I measured. A weekend later we went to the boat to check the mock-up would fit. It was then I discovered that it would not actually go through the loo door, in any orientation or direction. Having exhausted my knowledge of expletives I then measured the width of the loo door to find it 50mm narrower than the smallest dimensions of my mock-up. My new design now takes into account this overlooked factor. At least I found out before I had the tank made. So the moral of the story is, if you want to put something in a space measure the dimensions of the route it has to go as well. 4 Local Notice to Mariners No.17 of 2017 DREDGE OF EMSWORTH YACHT HARBOUR 1. General. Mariners are advised that a maintenance dredge of Emsworth Yacht Harbour is due to commence 04 November 2017, or following the seasonal closure of the oyster fishery if later. 2. Dredged material will be beneficially disposed of within the Treloar Hole, located within the fairway at the entrance to Chichester Harbour, centred on position: N, W 3. Disposal within the Treloar Hole will take place during the period HW -6 hours and HW - 2 hours. 4. Vessels. Disposal operations will be undertaken with two 20m hopper barges manoeuvred by the 9.5m Multicat Seaka. The barges will be delivered to the marina Monday 30 October by the 15m tug Forceful. Dredging operations will be undertaken using the 20m barge Boxer with backhoe dredger, which will be towed to site prior to operations. 5. All towing vessels will maintain a dual watch on VHF channels 16 and 14, and show the lights and shapes prescribed by the Collision Regulations. 6. Mooring. A temporary mooring will be laid in the Emsworth Channel for the duration of the dredge in approximate position: N, W. 7. Caution. Vessels involved in towing, pushing and disposal operations will be restricted in their ability to manoeuvre and mariners are requested to give them a wide berth. This will be particularly important in the confined waters approaching Emsworth Yacht Harbour. 8. 5 A very big grin from our ECA Membership Secretary at the helm of her Vivacity 24, Jarretts on the way back from her first successful trip outside Chichester Harbour- the Southampton Boat Show Rally at Shepards Wharf, Cowes. Jane has had a lot of trouble with Jarretts this season, outboard stolen, series of engine problems, the odd leak into the cabin, but finally, with Alice and I as crew**, Jane made it not only over the Chi Bar at last, but all the way to Cowes and back to EYH. Two Firsts on the same weekend Rally plus a X-Manche to Paimpol crewing Well Done Jane. **(Tringa II s water trap had started leaking leading to us needing a lift to the SIBS Rally at the last minute-thanks Jane, and a berth Thanks Derek and Sheila). Given that Very High and Phenomenal have been used in UK forecasts rather than Southern Ocean ones in the last 18 months or so, we may need the right-hand column soon.

7 Paimpol; Tringa II's Tale of Two Alternators and some other issues (Part the first) 31 st July 2017, Alice and I left EYH 06.15hrs, Jane Hoolahan having joined us on the spur of the moment, bound for Paimpol and the 2017 'Chant de Marin'. Around 16.50hrs, just clear of the Northbound shipping, our domestic batteries showed 11.5v, so all nonessential services off, radar and chartplotter off to conserve charge from alternator. Approaching Cherbourg at 20.40, we needed the nav lights on and saw us finally berthed on Q pontoon Cherbourg Marina, after for the first time ever, getting too far right inside the Port Militaire (PM) boundary subsequently on the way home to UK I noticed the innermost yellow PM boundary buoy outside the marina is very faint nowadays did I lose it in the background light clutter and steer for the masts in the free anchorage area to the right of Marina entrance instinctively? Batteries now 11v, shore power on to charge them, full check of circuits with Badgies big circuit tester tomorrow before we sail. The days surprises were not yet over however at 23.10hrs, Dick heard a splash and cries while doing his last deck checks, ran round with our younger, stronger French neighbour and helped rescue the female crewmember from 'Beyond Belief' Cowes, on P pontoon the splash was as she fell in while starting to moor up on arrival- soaked, cold, but cheerful, 'well I know my Life Jacket works ok' Could have been dicey as dark, pontoons quite high to climb up and just her partner on boat, which was not yet moored to the finger and she was between finger and boat. Brought back Dick s memory of falling into the Basse Sablon finger root empty triangle in the dark Dick was lucky, just one wet trouser leg, and not to break a leg or worse. 01/08 Left Port Chantereyne 16.15hrs with Badgie to get to St Peter Port before bad weather. Arrived 23.40hrs on outer harbour non-walk ashore pontoon. Batteries held up OK today. But no shore power this year on isolated pontoon. 02/08/17 Cowered on boat in driving rain, squalls, fog, strong winds all the dark day, Alice & Jane had a lie in, Dick got soaked moving boat along on warps to make room for yet more boats seeking refuge. Badgie's generator went u/s in pm, so couldn't charge our batteries, which were suffering again. 03/08 Very windy but gloriously sunny. 04/08 still v. windy, but got onto walk ashore berth. Molly, Alison Wakelin s dog, demonstrating In It, not On It on the EYH October 2017 Walk, unlike the poor lady at Cherbourg, who would have preferred to stay On It, not In It 05/08 All our tests indicate our 14 month old alternator is kaput SeaStart visited, confirmed our tests, no local suitable alternator in stock on Guernsey, replacement ordered from UK, Jane transferred across to Badgie to make sure she visits the Chant de Marin. 06/08 moved into inner harbour until new alternator arrives. Very sorrowful, and heavy hearted, as heard John Baldwin had died very suddenly today. Many fond memories of cruising in company with John & Anne in Normandie and on Club Rallies. 09/08 woke to thunder and lighting, heavy rain, and then the new alternator arrived! Cannot thank Bob of Sea Start Guernsey enough for all the efforts and options he made and tried to get us going again as quickly as possible.

8 Paimpol; Tringa s Tale continued; We later found out when back in EYH what was killing our alternators-a weld on our engine side inlet pipe into the stainless steel water trap for the exhaust had developed a pinhole fracture or corrosion over this season. This sprayed a fine, hot, salty mist into the engine bay Just the job for electrical kit! This, of course dried out when a hot engine stopped, leaving only a small puddle or two, which in a shallow bilged Southerly, could be wave induced. Fortunately, while looking for a suspected fuel/water leak, a torch shining into the engine bay picked up the glitter of the fine spray away at the extreme aft end behind the engine. Luke Cutler has now fitted a new Vetus plastic water trap and Tringa II is back on line. I still have to get the 14 month + old alternator refurbished by a lorry specialist, and the current one serviced The new alternator s suddenly corroded condition on our return to the boat after the Paimpol cruise alerted us to some sort of engine bay leak, of fuel or water, which is why we found the leak. Dick Tyrrell, Tringa II of Hamble The semi-robotic howdah fitted elephant and bullock cart which processed several times every day at the Chant de Marin accompanied by dancers, musicians and stilt walkers. At the Chant in 2015, it was just one big camel!
