1 August 28, 2009 (Revised 3 Mar. 2010) Q Class and TONDELEYO; History & Condition TONDELEYO (Ex FLIGHT, OLD GIRL, CARINA, SEA BREEZE, MORE JOY) The 1909 MORE JOY (HMCo #691) is the third of four Q Boats designed by NGH and built by the HMCo (two in 1907; DOROTHY Q (#668) and ELEANOR (#669) and one each in 1909 MORE JOY (#691) and 1923 GRAYLING (#892). A fifth, FALCON (HMCo #962) was built by HMCo to a W. Starling Burgess design in The Q Class was the first to be built under the Universal Rule. The roots of the Universal Rule go back to 1900 and the creative genius of Nathanael Greene Herreshoff. While dominating the Great 90-Footers era of the America s Cup, Capt. Nat was not pleased with the drive to light displacement scows or skimming dishes under the Seawanhaka Rule and determined to establish a new rule that played displacement against sail area or driving power. The Universal Rule was adapted by the NYYC in December The Q-boats correspond closely to 8 metres built under the International Rule. The Q Class was introduced in the Spring of 1904 with gaff rigs. William Gardner, Frank Paine, NGH and others designed boats for the Class. Nat Herreshoff s DOROTHY Q and ELEANOR were the second and third boats of the Class. ELEANOR dominated the Class for the next 10 years, winning the first Q-Class trophy (donated by Sir Thomas Lipton). About 20 boats were built before WWI. J. P. Morgan tried to revive the Class on the Long Island Sound with his purchase of the NGH designed GRAYLING in 1923, but there were no others built and GRAYLING was sold into the Q Boat Fleet in Marblehead where the revival had taken hold. New boats were added to the Marblehead Fleet at 0-3 per year and in 1925 the Corinthian Yacht Club placed a Q Class Cup in competition. The later boats were longer, with reduced sail area (about 900 sq ft vs 1000) and Marconi rigs. In 1928 thirteen Q-boats were active in Marblehead, but expansion of the Fleet ended with the Depression. A few more were built in the late 1930s. One report is that a total 67 Q boats were built. In 1928 L Francis Herreshoff was an advocate of the Q class, a position that he based upon the following rationale; 1 They have more cubic room for use as a cabin in the hull than any other racing or cruising boat of the same sail area in the world. The class has more freeboard for the sail area than any other racing yacht The class is longer on the waterline and overall for the amount of sail area than any other type of her size used in America. 2 They are seldom reefed The average speed for sail area is very high They are capable boats, well adapted to long life, are built well, and are extremely desirable as an afternoon sailing as well as cruising boat. Cost is 25% less than boats of the same amount of headroom and cabin capacity designed under the International or European rule. There are fifteen Q boats listed in the Register of Wooden Yachts (shown below with a possible 16 th ) including the 1925 Cotton Blossom II restored by Dennis Connor in A 2007 rebuilt Frank Paine designed Q-boat, the 1930 FALCON, was offered for sale recently at $550K. TONDELEYO (MORE JOY) Design & Condition NGH carved a new half-hull model for MORE JOY and gave her one foot more beam than his first two Q boats. (DOROTHY Q and ELEANOR were built from the same half-model, although with some dimensional changes.) MORE JOY was built to a new construction drawing. She is typical NGH designed construction; white oak frames, double planked cedar and mahogany, and a canvas covered white pine deck. The sail area was less than that of DOROTHY Q (and probably ELEANOR); 882 vs sq ft. Today MORE JOY s hull planking and structure is mostly original. She has lost her sheerline. Some frames have been sistered and some floors have been 2

3 increased in size. The shear clamps, bilge stringers, most hanging knees are original. A number of frames are cracked at the turn of the bilge. The deck is original pine with a later deteriorated fiberglass overlay and is quite soft and spongy; some deck beams and deck carlins are loose with multiple refastening. The deckhouse is not original, but is located as the original. The boat was rerigged as a yawl some time in the past. The mainmast however is in the original location with the original mast partner and a beefed up mast step. There are holes in the deck where deck fittings were cut out for salvage; these fittings are stored below. She was truly saved just in the nick of time. There has been some cleaning below and loose removed fittings have been inventoried. More of her condition will become evident after we can conduct a full survey. We have her yawl rig sails and spars, but they have not been inspected. The history of the owners is in a separate document. There are 15 owners and potentially six names over the 100 years. The record is fairly complete, but lacks race records and photos through her life. It does appear that MORE JOY may have sailed in every one of her 100 years. That alone makes her unique. We do know that Mr. Cone sailed her every year from 1968 through SAVING MORE JOY This boat is worth saving as a permanent part of the museum s collection for the following reasons. The Q Class is the first design application of the Universal Rule (originally known as the Herreshoff Rule) developed by NGH As per LFH s listed design points the Q class is a practical and economical cruising and racing design that is worth saving. MORE JOY is believed to be the oldest surviving Q boat She may have sailed every year of her 100 year life The boat s structure is mostly original. Decisions on whether to display as is, restore for static display, or restore for service must await a good cleaning, survey and development of resources. Identification: Coll. 120 Biography of Henry M. Devereux Henry M. Devereux, N. A. ( ) of City Island, New York received his degree in naval architecture from Cornell University. After graduation, Devereux was associated with a number of local City Island firms, among them: Ford, Payne & Sweisguth; the Cooper Union Ship & Yacht Design firm; William Gardner & Company; Ford, Payne & Roue; the Minneford Yacht Yard; and M. Rosenblatt & Son. He also designed independently. Henry Devereux was also a commodore of the City Island Yacht Club and a founding member of the Storm Trysail Club. A commander in the U. S. N. R. during World War II, he was an assistant Design Superintendent in the U.S. Navy Yard, Brooklyn, New York. He designed recreational, commercial, and military vessels in both power and sail. Although not as well known, Henry Devereux was also a photographer and cinematographer. In 1981, Henry M. Devereux died at the age of TONDELEYO; ft.
