It hasn t dampened the passion for sailing, most boats are still out every weekend with the exception of the very wet days. Some members even decided to sail in the rain rather than cancel their plans on a very wet Saturday! As usual, winter brings with it some of the best sailing days on the bay of course they are mixed in with the not so pleasant, so don t forget to layer up! As I m sure everyone is already aware, we have been remodeling and are running operations out of our new facility at Marina Bay. This is a great move for Tradewinds and I think that we will all enjoy the social environment of the new clubhouse. Having all of the boats in one place and near the office will also make us much more quickly accessible to members on the docks. Please bear with us for awhile, I m certain we will have some short periods of confusion ourselves as we transfer our operation. You can also expect some short server/reservation systems outages during the move. Hopefully having everything located in one place will save us enough hours per week to get an extra sailing trip in ourselves! Don t forget to dig out your favorite holiday potluck dish recipe and cook it up for the Christmas Party! This will be our first official gathering at the new facility, we d love to see everyone there on December 6th. Please remember that some courses have important pre-requisites. If you would like to take Advanced Coastal Cruising in 2009, please consider the March 14th & 15th Coastal Navigation course. Coastal Navigation is also a pre-requisite for Celestial Navigation. Celestial Navigation is a pre-requisite for Offshore Passage-making. We are excited to be offering a Radar course for the first time. Keep your eyes on future newsletters, we expect to offer a weather course soon as well. These are ASA endorsements for your log-book! Advanced Docking & Motoring now includes an ASA endorsement. If you have previously taken our ADM course, it counts. You ll need to pay for the ASA certification and materials ($45) and take the written test. If you are considering an Offshore Passage-making Class, sign up for the prep day in February. We will schedule OPM classes this year only if we have enough students interested after this planning day. If you are seriously considering this class, be prepared for several months of home-work and preparation! 3

4 Instructors Attention Sailing Instructors If you have been teaching sailing or thinking about it, you should consider becoming certified by the American Sailing Association (ASA). The place to start is an Instructor Qualification Clinic. Craig Walker, our lead instructor and ASA Instructor Evaluator, along with Tradewinds Sailing School and Club will be hosting a Keelboat Sailing Instructor (201) Qualification Clinic starting Friday evening, December 5 th through Sunday December 7 th at our new Marina Bay location. The clinic is limited to six so registering through the ASA as soon as possible is recommended. Clio - Is now in the 29 fleet if you are BCC certified, you may check out on and sail this Cal 31 Marina Bay D Dock Info - Behind the blue club-house there is a parking lot. The gate is opened using a key-card which we have attached to the boat keys. You may park in the loading zone and take your things to the boat, then take the boat-keys back to your car and move it into the parking lot. You won t need the key to leave the parking lot, only to get in. We are working with the marina on a more long-term solution, such as a coded key-pad, and will let you know when that is changed. Restrooms and showers are located behind the club-house and are accessed using your Marina Bay electronic key through the side gate. Checkout sheets need to be turned into the mailbox located inside of Dock box D-14. We will retrieve them from there until we get the office moved into the new building. 6 2010 Already? Okay, I know it is still waaaay out there on the calendar. It's not even 2009 yet. But sometimes, to make a really special, epic adventure happen, I have to plan that far in advance. And this adventure includes a very special event that most people experience maybe once in their lifetimes, and it happens whether we are there or not. Enough suspense already? How about 9 days of high-season sailing amongst the beautiful incomparable islands of Tahiti in luxury yachts. That's enough time to visit an outlying island or two, beyond the normal charter itinerary. Now add 2 nights in a hotel on Papeete, the capital city of Tahiti, before boarding the yachts. How about Santiago, Chile- big city Latin America plus its famous wine country, at the same latitude and climate as the Napa Valley? We'll enjoy 2 nights in a great hotel there, too. And what's in between those two places? Locals call it the World's Belly Button, and Isla de Pascua. We know it as Easter Island, home to some of the greatest ancient mysteries: 50-ton Moai statues, 25 feet tall, looking out to sea, and literally hundreds of shrines. We'll have 4 nights on the island, allowing plenty of time to relax and explore. And as if this weren't enough, we will be on this mysterious island for one of the universe's most amazing spectacles: A total solar eclipse! A Total eclipse is like nothing you have ever experienced. Many people have witnessed a partial eclipse, but that is light years away from Totality. The middle of the day turns to night and the sun goes completely dark. You can see stars and planets, and the sun's corona. And we will get to enjoy 5 minutes of totality, which is a very long time to be holding your breath! As much as I want to plan every last detail of this trip and guarantee a price, I simply can't. Not yet. Airlines wont sell me tickets yet, nor guarantee prices, and no one knows what fuel surcharges will do, up or down. What I can tell you is this- We'll be flying halfway around the world through both hemispheres, spending 9 days on yachts, 8 nights in hotels, and 2 nights on airplanes, for a total vacation lasting 19 days. As always, I will handle as many of the details as possible, making everything go as smooth and worry-free as possible (just ask anyone from the recent Croatia trip!). I believe we would depart Los Angeles on Thursday June 24th, 2010, and get back into L.A. on Tuesday July 13th. I think the price is going to be about $5,500 per person, which will include everything but food and drink (although some breakfasts will be included with the hotels). Because of many factors, including hotel sizes and airline space limitation, I will have to limit this trip to just 40 people. So what I would like to know now is whether you are interested. Please me if you are. If there is sufficient early interest, I will book up everything I can, and ask for small deposits. I may even be able to guarantee pricing for those that sign up early, but not quite yet. Early deposits would be totally refundable, of course, until I finalize prices, and then I'll provide cancellation terms and all the details. So whadda ya think? 7 Sailing South on Sea Story Jerry Rouillard Winter is coming on, so Sea Story is heading south again. And once again, Tradewinds is offering members a chance to crew on a blue water adventure down the California coast on a 39 Pearson, Baja veteran. The trip is broken down into two legs of three days each. The first leg is to Santa Barbara (Dec 29 - Jan 1), and the second to San Diego (Jan 1 - Jan 4). Crew members will participate in all aspects of offshore sailing, including manning the helm, managing sails, standing watches, and using the auto-pilot, GPS and radar. Minimum requirement for the trip is Basic Coastal Cruising. The cost is $595 per leg. If you are interested in joining us for one or both legs of the trip, contact Brandy at the Tradewinds office. For more information on Sea Story, and last year s trip up the coast, visit the Sea Story blog site at CALIFONRIA OFFSHORE PASSAGE- JANUARY 24-27, 2009 A fantastic opportunity to discover ocean sailing, this is a non-stop passage from San Francisco to Marina Del Rey, about 360nm. We ll be sailing our 2001 Catalina 36 Home Free in preparation for the Puerto Vallarta race. The 4 race crew will be aboard, including adventure master David Kory and veteran instructor Marianne Wheeler, so we only have room for 2 more people to join us. We ll sail out the Golden Gate, turn left, and continue day and starry night in the ocean, mostly beam and broad reaching down the length of California. Stand a regular watch, steer and trim the boat, navigate, and live at sea for 3+ days. Find out if ocean sailing is for you, in a safe environment. A great experience and learning opportunity, as we expect to be testing several symmetric and asymmetric spinnakers. Its only $495 per person, and is available exclusively to Tradewinds members. This 2001 Catalina 36 mkii is racing in the 2009 Puerto Vallarta race (temporarily named Barking Spider, like all of David s race boats). This spacious newer boat is in great shape and comfortably equipped, including furling jib, electric windlass, full galley with refrigeration, wheel steering, stern pulpit seats, and modern electronics. It can sleep 7 people, with a large aft cabin for 2, a forward cabin for 2, a dining area that converts to a double bed, and a settee that makes another bed. LEG #1: MEXICO COASTAL CRUISING We ll board the boat in Puerto Vallarta on February 19, and take our time coastal hopping north, likely visiting Cabo San Lucas, Magdalena Bay (full of Mom and baby whales at this time of year), and Turtle Bay among others. It only takes 4 days to cover the 500 miles, but we have 2 weeks, which leaves plenty of time for stops, restaurants, weather delays, and whatever else. You ll be back in Marina Bay by March 19th. A couple of points to consider: Being early in the season, we shouldn t see the strong NW winds, so hopefully no bashing. The boat will be in cruise mode, not race mode, so no need to push too hard. We will probably choose to do a few overnight sails, giving us more days to relax and explore. We ll stay flexible, and keep it fun. No whining or complaining, please. Cost sharing includes the boat, diesel, propane, insurance, mooring and dock fees, etc. The cost for either 2 week leg is only $695 per person. And yes, you can do both if you have the time. 9 What I Did Last Summer By Marianne Wheeler Last summer I spent every Monday and Tuesday indoors. That might sound strange with my busy outdoors sailing schedule. But, I had the opportunity to work in the Tradewinds office answering the phone, filing paperwork, scheduling classes, signing up new members, and chatting with folks stopping by. As any boat owner readily will agree, BOAT stands for Break Out Another Thousand, and as everything you buy for a boat costs about five times as much as you think it should, I was looking for funds to pour into my vintage Cal 40. At the same time, Tradewinds wanted summer help in the office. They took a chance on me and I had a job. Becoming part of the office staff gave me an incredibly good look at what it takes to run a sailing school and club. It takes quite a lot. Tradewinds sailors are smart. They join our club and sail their hearts out without ever having to think about the time and money it takes to keep up a boat. They hop on and go and Tradewinds takes care of the rest. Butch and Lynn, and Brandy and Matt are dedicated and committed to letting all our members enjoy the good life on the water without ever having to worry about any boat maintenance headaches. Spending time in the office made me realize that most of us never think about what goes on behind the scenes. We don t think much about what it really takes to run Tradewinds professionally and efficiently. It takes a ton of energy and enthusiasm, long days at work and very little time off. It takes someone like Brandy, an ace at multitasking and pulling strings together. She easily handles two computers and three phone lines, while organizing all schedules and keeping Matt and Butch out of trouble. With a memory like a microprocessor she has everything at her fingertips, or at the tip of her tongue. She never forgets even the slightest detail and always knows where everything is, or where it should be. Brandy makes managing the office look easy. Sometimes, two and a half year old A.J. comes to work, managing his mother. His first word was not mama or dada, but boat. He arrives pulling a kid-sized carry-on full of toys, but invariably finds much more interesting things to play with. He loves stacking dozens of oil filters his dad needs for the boats and prefers exploring the inner workings of the Xerox machine over his coloring books. If given a chance, he cheerfully straightens out the file cabinets and rearranges the office desk, and he always has a smile for a visiting Tradewinds sailor. Running a sailing school and club reliably and harmoniously takes someone like Matt. Every morning he grabs his tool kit, lap top, and coffee cup, and heads out to fix what needs to be fixed. He is a technical wizard with any boat project and knows electronics, climbs masts, tunes outboards, deals with smelly heads, and repairs anything that can and will break. Whatever the wind, the sea, or the Tradewinds sailors may break on a boat, Matt will fix it. He also is the IT guru of the 21 st century installing and understanding computer systems and figuring out applications that a modern office needs. And, making Tradewinds what it is takes someone like Butch, the gentle, but firm patriarch, who is always there. Whatever the situation or problem, his knowing smile tells you he has been there, he is there, and he always will be there. His knowledge of boats and people is immeasurable and he never, ever, gets rattled or runs out of patience. In his calm, benevolent way he always has time for anyone and anything, giving his full attention to one and all. He tirelessly pours over countless spreadsheets daily, making sure the bills get paid, keeping all the numbers straight and all the boats running. Butch is forever looking for improvements to the school and the club. With the workload never ending, Lynn helps out whenever she can. Despite her demanding job and busy schedule, she pitches in when needed, giving up her precious free time to make things go round. She enjoys meeting all our Tradewinds sailors and finds time for crew socials and sailing the bay on special outings. Tradewinds truly is a family run business and all in the family work hard to make our sailing life as smooth as possible. This summer, I really came to appreciate just how much it takes to release all of us from the tasks of everyday life and keep us sailing in unlimited bliss. Huzza and Thank You, Tradewinds!
