It s starting to look like the weekend rainy cycle has come to an end and there have been some amazing sailing days on the bay the past couple of weeks.

It s hard to believe there are still folks out there who haven t experienced our passion. AJ got some new snorkeling gear for his Birthday last month and he can t wait to try it out this summer.

It s starting to look like the weekend rainy cycle has come to an end and there have been some amazing sailing days on the bay the past couple of weeks. We d like to officially make May Introduce a land-lubber to the sea month, so find a friend who has never been sailing and get them out on the water! It s hard to believe there are still folks out there who haven t experienced our passion. AJ got some new snorkeling gear for his Birthday last month and he can t wait to try it out this summer. We have been rummaging through our closets at home digging out our own gear as well. The whole Kepner family is looking forward to our Sea of Cortez trip in July. We just got in our shipment of Fleece Jackets, Caps, and Polo Shirts with the Tradewinds Logo on them. Stop by the office to see all of the new colors you can get our swag in! If you are still considering the Thailand trip this November, it s definitely time to stop considering and act. David says he can t add any more boats or flights, so it s about booked. See page 5 and contact David right away if you want to book one of the last couple of spots! Tradewinds Instructor Jerry Rouillard will be bringing his Pearson 39, Sea Story, up the coast again this spring and has room for a few people who want some California coastal cruising experience. A typical 5 hour Bay sail from Marina Bay includes a trip through Raccoon Straight, around Angel Island, across the Slot, down the San Francisco city front, and a leisurely down-wind sail back home. ICOM Seminar - Representatives from ICOM will be presenting products and answering questions at the Richmond West Marine store (Cutting & Canal). 4 California Coastal Cruise! This is a two-part trip up California s coastline with Tradewinds Instructor Jerry Rouillard on Sea Story, a Pearson 39 outfitted for offshore cruising. It s the perfect trip for those who want an affordable, offshore cruising experience in a manageable time frame. The first section of the trip is from San Diego to Santa Barbara via Catalina Island. The second section is from Santa Barbara to San Francisco. Each section will be booked separately for just that leg of the trip. Crew slots will be limited to three individuals, or two individuals and one couple who can share the same cabin. Prices include provisions. As with any sea voyage the dates are the best we can plan in advance. If you would like to sign up please plan a day or two on either end as just-in-case days Leg One: San Diego to Santa Barbara June 5th to June 9th. Crewmembers for this leg will meet on June 5th and set sail that afternoon for Catalina with a possible interim, overnight anchorage at Santa Cruz Island. After an overnight stay at Catalina it will be an easy hop up to Santa Barbara. With no weather delays, crewmembers will be replaced by those on the second leg of the trip. Cost: $ Leg Two: Santa Barbara to San Francisco June 9th to June 13th. The crew will board the afternoon of the 9th of June and set sail. The itinerary will include one overnight stopover at Monterey, Morro Bay or the anchorage at San Simeon. Anticipated arrival in Santa Francisco will be June 13th. Cost: $ Please Note: Due to the nature of this trip, we d only like you to sign up if you can be flexible by two days either at the beginning or the end of your leg. If weather conditions dictate, we may adjust the departure time by two days in either direction. The cost of the trip will be non-refundable Exotic Trips Info! Planning Ahead If you've ever been on one of David's trips, you know how well organized they and what a great deal they are. In order to make that happen, he plans things waaaay in advance, so he can secure the boats, hotels and airfares at the best possible rates. We've been talking to him recently, and found out what's on the schedule for Yes, it's only May of 2010 right now, but he has trips planned out for 2011 already. We don't have details yet, but you may want to reserve these dates on your calendar so you don't miss out. June 1-14, 2011 The south of France! Warm sunshine and the longest days of the year to explore vineyards, castles, small medeival villages, and all that amazing history and cuisine. A one-way voyage down the Canal du Midi, from the Languedoc region to the Mediterranean sea. This will be a first for Tradewinds, and not one to be missed! November 3-13, 2011 Springtime in Tahiti! It will have been nearly 4 years since our last Tahiti trip, and this is always a favorite destination. Enjoy 2 nights at a beach resort on Tahiti before boarding the yachts for a week of incomparable sailing in the clear warm waters around Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Huahine. A point of the compass was defined as 11 degrees, 15 seconds, rather than 15 minutes. You caught that, right? Our contemporary way of reading a compass is called the three-figure method, referring to the three numerals called out to the helmsperson by the navigator, as in steer three-two-zero. Early compass cards, however, were divided not into 360 degrees but into 32 points, each one equivalent to 11 degrees, 15 minutes, about the best the early ships could steer. Compass bearings were East-Southeast or West by North. Now you might think West by North would translate to 315 degrees, halfway between west at 270 and north at 360. But that s Northwest. Instead, West by North is one point north of west or degrees. The sequence from West to North in points is: W, W by N, WNW, NW by W, NW, NW by N, NNW, N by W, N. Film buffs may notice that Alfred Hitchcock s North by Northwest is not on this list, because, as the master of mystery knew, there is no such direction. Later, things got uglier when, as navigational skills improved, points were divided into halves and quarters, yielding indecipherable directions like East by North ¾ North. Reciting these divisions was called boxing the compass, and I m relieved it was in most instances replaced by our modern (actually ancient Babylonian) 360 degree system so I don t have to know it. On my good days, I can count to 360. Relative bearings in points were, for example, two points on the starboard bow, which translates to degrees relative to the ship s heading. Four points adds up to 045 degrees, voiced as broad on the starboard bow; 090 is starboard abeam; and 135 would be broad on the starboard quarter. A vestige of this practice can be found in the transition between the arc of sidelights and stern light that occurs at 22.5 degrees abaft the beam. Why not an even number? Because 22.5 degrees is two points abaft the beam. So now you know just how to talk on those sail like a pirate days: Aaaargh, matey, she s hull down, one point forward of the port beam. 7 August 2010 will mark the 13 th consecutive year of Black Boaters Summit, a sailing vacation in the British Virgin Islands BBS has come a long way since Sun- Sail Yacht Charter Company asked us in 1997 to help them market yacht chartering to the National Brotherhood of Skiers, a predominately African American national snow ski club, commented Capt Paul Mixon, Founder of BBS. "We've made some great friends along the way", continues Capt Paul; friends in the British and US Virgin Islands, friends in the sailing industry who believe in the sport of sailing, and BBS participants who have become great friends over the years and have even married each other. Black Boaters Summit This year we are offering two vacation options. With the goal of boats in the 2010 flotilla we felt it was necessary to offer a package that was affordable to more participants. 1. Voyage 500 catamaran vacation- $2465 pp dbl o/c Aug 5-15 th 2. Moorings 515 monohull vacation - $1465 pp dbl o/c Aug 7-15th We kept our Voyage 500 vacation which did very well in years past, and added a Moorings 515 vacation and shortened the dates by two days. Both vacations include a three day Westin St. John stay at the end of the sailing. It has always been our goal with BBS to expose all people to the sport of sailing. It is important to note that BBS is open to ALL. We serve all demographics. We are proud to be a leader in the Diversity in Sailing movement; Capt Paul was asked to moderate a Diversity In Sailing Seminar during the Strictly Sail Pacific Boat Show which was held April 15-18, in Oakland California. "I think we were a hit, says Capt Paul, and I think Oakland was the right place to kick off the idea of Diversity in Sailing. As I said to the fifty or so that were in the audience, Diversity in Sailing is good for business and good for the community." BBS is working toward more diversity by reaching out to yacht clubs and sailing schools and asking them to join our flotilla. We may not have the twenty four yachts we had in 2006, but whoever vacations with us this August will have the best vacation of their lives.
