It looks like it s going to be a very busy month here at Tradewinds, so we ve decided to take most of it off and leave Butch and the capable staff to keep things under control. Brandy and I and the kids will be with a Tradewinds Sailing Group in La Paz from June 28 to July 9, and we ll also be gone for my 20 year class reunion the weekend of July During all of this travel time, please remember to take it easy on Butch, he may be a bit overwhelmed trying to keep up with everything by himself! We will be hosting the Catalina Rendezvous again this year, the weekend of July Come on out and mix it up with the Catalina Owners and talk about boats. We are also hosting the Delta Doo Dah kickoff on July 30th. Expect the clubhouse to be crowded with sailors looking forward to a great trip. This will be another night full of sea stories and good times! We are running some great specials on Basic Keelboat, Basic Coastal Cruising, and Bareboat Chartering this month. If you ve been waiting for the perfect time to take the next class, this may be an opportunity for you. The grills will be available on the patio if you d like to bring food and Bar-B-Q, feel free! Friday Night Race Series - 1st Friday of the month race series. The first flag is at 6:15 sharp. Be at the start line and ready to go by then. If you are not already signed up and can make the first Friday of the month, call the office to see if there is still room on a crew! Saturday Night Sail - Join Brandy & Matt for a night-time sail around the bay. Learn how to navigate at night, experience the bay in the dark, or just come out and enjoy a nice romantic evening on the water. Free for members, $75 for non-members. Introduction to Sailing - Join us for a sail on The Bay! All welcome. A typical 4 hour Bay sail from Marina Bay includes a trip through Raccoon Straight, around Angel Island, across the Slot, down the San Francisco city front, and a leisurely down-wind sail back home. Tradewinds Social - Bring your favorite pot-luck appetizers and drinks and mix it up with the sailors of the Tradewinds Fleet! Come and swap sea-stories and meet people to sail with. Fun to be had by all! ARRRRRRR! Aug 7 10am 4pm Poker Run - Stop by the office before you go sailing and find out where you can pick up poker chips during your sailing day. At the end of the day, exchange your chips for playing cards. Best poker hands earn prizes. The grills will be available on the patio if you d like to bring something to Bar-B-Q. Planning Ahead If you've ever been on one of David's trips, you know how well organized they and what a great deal they are. In order to make that happen, he plans things waaaay in advance, so he can secure the boats, hotels and airfares at the best possible rates. We've been talking to him recently, and found out what's on the schedule for Yes, it's only May of 2010 right now, but he has trips planned out for 2011 already. We don't have details yet, but you may want to reserve these dates on your calendar so you don't miss out. June 1-14, 2011 The south of France! Warm sunshine and the longest days of the year to explore vineyards, castles, small medeival villages, and all that amazing history and cuisine. A one-way voyage down the Canal du Midi, from the Languedoc region to the Mediterranean sea. This will be a first for Tradewinds, and not one to be missed! November 3-13, 2011 Springtime in Tahiti! It will have been nearly 4 years since our last Tahiti trip, and this is always a favorite destination. Enjoy 2 nights at a beach resort on Tahiti before boarding the yachts for a week of incomparable sailing in the clear warm waters around Raiatea, Tahaa, Bora Bora and Huahine. 5 Nautical Terminator By Tony Johnson In a recent column we mentioned the phrase, hull down. In the great days of sail, this was the lookout s way of communicating the distance to a ship he s sighted, just coming over the horizon. So how far away is a ship that s hull down? The formula is the same simple one we use in piloting to tell how far off we are when dipping a light on a lighthouse. The square root of the height of our eye above the water in feet times 1.17 yields the distance to the horizon in nautical miles. If we use 16 feet as the height of eye about the height of the forecastle head (bow) where we ll have our lookout we get a result of approximately four and a half miles (SQRT 16 = 4 x 1.17 = 4.68). Eric Hiscock s Beyond The West Horizon sounds like a romantically distant place, but it s only as far away as Angel Island. Now, to get the distance to the lighthouse, or in our case the mast of the enemy, you add the figure above to the result of the same formula when applied to the estimated height of the sails we see. The mast of a full rigged ship will be, say, 150 feet tall (it could be more HMS Victory had a mainmast that rose 205 feet above the waterline, for example). Doing the math (SQRT 150 = x 1.17=14.3) and adding the height of eye figure above (4.68) we get around 19 nautical miles. On a windy day when they ve doused their royals and topgallants, she ll be somewhat closer when we first see her, about 16 miles. If we move our lookout up to the fore-top, he ll be somewhere in the vicinity of 80 feet above the water. We ll see her sooner if we have our man there, at about 23 miles. The range on a clear day, then, is between 16 and 23 miles. If we re sailing towards one another the closing speed could be as high as knots, so we ll be within an hour or a little more of her. Beat to Quarters! On the other hand if she s chasing us and closing at only a knot or less, it could take a day or more to reach us. There s a modern use for this ancient observation technique that we can benefit from, which we ll get to next time. Friday Night Fun Race Series Standings!
