The temperature has been perfect and the wind has been cooperating as much as it does in spring and fall. I hope you ve been able to take the time to go out and enjoy it. Last Friday Ginger and I and a couple friends went sailing from 5:00 PM to 3:00 AM. It was a great night for a sail. Maybe we need to organize a night race. I know a lot of folks don t care to sail at night but I think it s a great time to go out. Here s a bit of information I was unaware of, and I ll bet there are a lot of folks that also aren t aware. Did you know that it s illegal to sit in the cockpit of your boat on Lake Norman and have a cocktail? I didn t either, but I ve verified it with the Lincoln County Sheriff s Office. Luckily I verified it over the phone, not by getting arrested. I ve seen in the local paper crime report section that folks are getting arrested for possession of spirituous liquor. I first assumed this was in reference to moonshine, but it kept showing up in the report and seemed like an awful lot of moonshine for one lake. So I called the Sheriff s office and it is indeed illegal to have any type of distilled liquor on a boat. There is a sort of loophole around this: If you have a cabin, you can have liquor in the cabin. CONTINUED ON PAGE 6 Commodore Matt Zaremski

2 VICE COMMODORE PETE S REPORT OYC Newsletter July 2009 Vice Commodore Input: Ahoy fellow club members! Only six races remain in the Wednesday Night Series and from the looks of the current standings the competition remains very, very tight particularly in the non-spinnaker fleet divisions. We ve already had our quota of abandoned races for the year in the first half of the series so we shouldn t see any more in the second half..right? We ve finally rescheduled the Top Gun which will now be conducted on October 24 th. That was the original scheduled date for the OYC Commodore s Cup which is rescheduled for November 21. Please make those changes on your planning calendar. While you have your calendar out please highlight the following dates: Lake Norman Yacht Club s Labor Day Regatta September 5&6, Peninsula Yacht Club s Peninsula Cup September 19 & 20, OYC s 150 Bridge Race October 3 rd, Wilmer Cup Regatta on October 31 & December 1 st, and LNYC s Carolina Keelboat One Design Regatta Vice Commodore Pete Calame December 7& 8. In closing, my call goes out for a volunteer(s) to serve as Race Chairperson for the 150 Bridge Race. 3 REAR COMMODORE S REPORT This afternoon, July 20, 2009, I attended the funeral of a man I came to know over the last several years. I didn t know him well, but whenever we met he lifted my spirits and I went away feeling better. I liked him, and it was clear that he liked me too. We often talked about fishing, mostly trout fishing in the streams of North Carolina. He was retired, and he fished often. Unlike many who fish, he invited me to join him at his favorite and most productive fishing holes. Although we never fished together, his enthusiasm for spending time in mountain streams pursuing the elusive trout encouraged me to get engaged in the wonderful sport of trout fishing. My friend was old, and because of his age, I didn t know if anyone outside of the family would be at the funeral. When I drove into the church parking lot it was hard to find an empty space. I was sure the Monday afternoon church calendar was as full as the parking lot. Only when I entered the church did I realize that nearly everyone was there for the funeral. 4 JULY BOARD MEETING The July board meeting was cancelled due to no pressing business and the busy schedules of the folks who lead the club. As always, I have included pictures of our officers and trustees so you will recognize them when you see them and hopefully thank them for the job they do and the time they put into our club. 6 CONTINUED FROM PAGE 1 You can also drink mixed drinks in the cabin; however, you can not legally drink a mixed drink, cordial, brandy, etc, outside of the cabin of your boat. So be careful out there, especially this time of year. I have no doubt that sailors are some of the best behaved and courteous folks on the water, but the traffic is relatively heavy and it doesn t hurt to keep an eye on the other guy and sail defensively. See you on the water, Matt CONTINUED FROM PAGE 3 businessman he ever met. Several in his immediate and extended families said he was the best and most generous man they every met. I was just one of several hundred there to pay their respects to a friend, a business associate or a family member. I knew he was an ambassador for trout fishing. What I didn t know was how much his enthusiasm for sailing, and golf, and business, and life, and mostly for people - would impact those around him. I m fishing more because of my friend s enthusiasm for the sport. In the same way, we can all become ambassadors of Lake Norman sailing. I often hear that Lake Norman sailing, and sailboat racing is in decline. If each of us will make an effort to get new people out on the water we will surely plant the seeds for a more active sailing community. If we invite friends and neighbors to OYC events our membership will increase as well. We have a great group on and off the water. Bring a friend with you to our next event and show them how much fun it is to be part of Outrigger Yacht Club! Take a friend sailing - make a friend sailing. Jim Juhl Rear Commodore

And although I was one of the first adopters of digital watches, there is still a very soft spot in my heart for fine mechanical watches such as the CORUM pictured at the right. This is the same style watch Bob Klutz won at the Peninsula Cup Regatta in September. How I wanted that watch! But it was not to be - at least not for that day. All of us now have another opportunity to win one of these classic watches. Sherry Corbett is selling chances for $25.00 each with a maximum of 100 chances sold. Your odds of winning have to be astronomical. I ve got my money in the pot already and the best thing about this is all of the proceeds go to our sailing charities. So how can one really lose?
