A Proposal to change Mast Storage in Compound A joint proposal by Ralph Hart & George Selvester
Two very obvious reasons have come to light over the past few years which may require changes in the way we, as a club, remove, transport and store boat masts. 1. As members continue to upsize with their boats masts are now a lot heavier. 2. The average age of members is now well above 60. During the last crane out day in 2015 it was a common complaint from most of the members that the transporting of the masts from the quayside into the compound is becoming an increasingly difficult task. Several of the mast team sustained injury whilst carrying out this task, as a club we have a duty of care towards our members. Suggestions were put forward from members for a bogey to be designed and constructed to make the transportation easier. The terrain around the compound really renders this proposal a non starter. There are steps, a kerb, a mound of earth and a small gate to be negotiated for access into the present mast storage area To further exacerbate the problem, the members are all of varying heights and weights not to mention ages, so carrying a 12 metre mast of upwards of 200lbs can be quite challenging. Ralph Hart (The present Works Convener) has been looking at several options and asked me for some input on the matter. Together we have examined the problem in depth and have come to the conclusion that the simplest solution is to devise a method whereby the crane is actually doing all the work and thus dispensing with any demanding physical effort from members. In the following pages a complete description of the proposed method is outlined and where possible is illustrated with drawings to make the whole procedure a lot clearer to the reader. I must point out at this stage, that the proposals have been thoroughly thought out and we have tried to speculate on possible objections and/or problems that may arise. Please read the whole booklet before raising any objections. We both realise that it is human nature to dislike change and some may simply object for this reason, however, I am sure that everyone will agree that this is a fairly critical problem and that the enclosed proposed solution does warrant serious consideration. George Selvester
The current situation The first picture indicates the current position of the mast rack and the small access gate leading into the compound The second picture shows the amount of obstacles in the way of the team trying to access the storage area. There is also a large earth hump to traverse before they can enter the small gate (This picture shows one of the smaller masts!) The third picture illustrates the awkward way the team are trying to carry the mast, this is a heavy mast and the have to make a sharp left and drop down several feet at the end of the compound onto the road
The plan below shows the current layout of the compound and the route taken when carrying masts which can be up to 12 metres in length and weighing up to 200lbs. Scale 200/1 approx After studying the current situation we propose that the mast rack is removed from its present position and re-located on the southern fence. This would require to be done in stages as follows: 1. Cut the posts from the old fence down to ground level (These can then be recycled to fabricate more mast trestles.) 2. Relocate the water tap to behind the gate. On Crane in day: 1. Remove trailers and movable boats to outside compound (car park) 2. Ensure that Evening Light is among the first boats lifted. 3. Set up a working area for Mast lifting, with designated team of 5 or 6 With the poles now out of the way and the area immediately in front existing mast storage area cleared. The mast lifting work area can now be established. For 2016 Crane in, the team will have to carry masts the short distance from the existing rack or trestles to be lifted across to the Work Area ready for slinging however once the mast rack is relocated this will no longer be the case and lifting mast in and out from the new area will be a relatively simple procedure. See diagram overleaf
Scale 200/1 approx The jib of the crane will easily reach to the gate and with the cable let out it can be attached to the mast for lifting. Once it is upright the crane can lift clear of the compound over the fence to the waiting boat to have it put in place as normal Many of the other boats in this diagram will already have been lifted into harbour Scale 200/1 approx The illustrations are a little crude but it gives you the idea of what is required. The jib of the Crane, we know, does have a sufficiently long enough reach. Not to scale When the boats and all the mast are clear of the compound we can then during the season shift the mast rack to its new location. As mentioned earlier, the water tap will also have to be re-located but this is also a job we can carry out on our own. In future all mast lifts will be able to be carried out in this fashion and only have to be move a few feet to a trestle or the rack. Contnd
Scale 200/1 approx Ralph and I are not sure whether the container needs to be kept, although we have shown on the plans where this could be situated if indeed we decide to keep it. If we decide as a committee to go ahead with this proposal, all of the work involved can be carried out by the members on organised work parties therefore the only expense would be for the Postcrete to re-locate the mast rack. There are several added advantages to our proposal which are: 1. the most obvious advantage is that the carrying of mast for any distance would now be a thing of the past 2. The area we are proposing for the mast rack is the most inaccessible area for reversing trailers into and making the available spaces easier access. 3. There is no longer any need to mark bays in the compound and boats can be reversed into available space ( we estimate there would be room for at least another three boats ) 4. Boats with trailers not being craned in can now be stored against the North fence (as in diagram) and would not interfere with the mast working area 5. The little gate, which is easy for the intruders to climb over can be done away with Any moving of heavy equipment such as the container and the mast racks themselves could be done with Steve Whiteford s machine, which he has said we can ask him to do anytime. A lot of thought has been given to this proposal and we are sure we have covered every angle. We formally request this be given due consideration and we will make ourselves available to discuss any pitfalls, problems etc and hopefully the proposal will be accepted. I am sure that everyone will agree that we cannot continue with the way it is at the moment Thank you for taking the time to read this proposal. George & Ralph
